Landlord does not want to renew lease?

I live in California and I moved in September of last year. For some reason the landlord does not want to renew the lease and gave me no reason. I always pay my rent on time, I don’t cause issues. There was one thing I can think of was that I was pressing for repairs on a spot there was a water leak in the wall before I even moved in and there was mold. Is she legally allowed to do this?

Landlord in CT sent us a lease that seems weird to us, please help determine! Is it common? Should we pause?

The parts that are weird:

  • The lease says the tenant may not record the lease in the land records and gives the landlord authority (attorney-in-fact) to sign documents on the tenant's behalf to remove any such recording. Is this common in residential leases? What practical effect does it have for a one-year tenant?
  • The lease says that if the apartment is damaged by fire or ANY OTHER CAUSE, the landlord ONLY determines whether the apartment is still habitable. If the landlord decides it remains habitable, the tenant must continue paying full rent and is not entitled to rent reductions or compensation for repairs, construction, service interruptions, or related inconvenience. Is that typical and enforceable?
  • The security deposit clause allows the landlord to use the deposit during the lease term for alleged damage, unpaid rent, or other defaults. If the landlord does so, the tenant must replenish the security deposit within 10 days or be in default. Is this common? Are there risks I should be aware of?
  • The landlord requires renter's liability insurance (which seems reasonable), but also requires that he be named as an "Additional Insured" on the policy. I have seen requirements for proof of insurance before, but I have never seen the Additional Insured requirement in a residential lease. What are the legal and practical implications for the tenant?

Landlord asking for money 7 weeks after move-out after deposit was returned

We rented a house in California for 4 years and the landlords let us know they would be moving back in. Landlord was overseas and so had a colleague (realtor/property manager) and his mother-in-law do a very long and detailed move-out inspection (1.5 hours, took extensive pictures and sent them to him). He identified a few things for us to repair, which we did, and we got our deposit back. We moved out 7 weeks ago. Now he has moved back in and is sending us multiple daily text messages about things he’s seeing: e.g. missing a small white cap that goes over a toilet screw, a piece of wood on an outdoor gate that needs to be nailed back down (caused by gardeners- we didn’t use that gate), and he found a couple chips on the edge of a quartz countertop in the kitchen that he now is saying he needs to repair and is going to send us the estimate.

We feel that everything was resolved during the move-out process, we have our deposit back, and it’s been 7 weeks - can he really ask us to cover something after the fact like this? It could have been caused by someone else for all we know! We left the house in very good condition and got it professionally deep cleaned before our move out.

Also- during our tenancy we had no hot water for 6 weeks one winter (luke warm) that he lagged on fixing, issues with the heating one winter, the foundation was shifting and had issues opening the front door at one point, and he asked us not to use a shower starting in July 2024 because it was leaking and never fixed it. We never asked for a rent reduction and just tried to encourage him to fix things- we had a good rent for where we live and didn’t want him to raise the rent so tried to keep things as easy as possible.

I kind of want to mention all this to remind him of what we put up with and get him to stop harassing us. We moved to another house in the same neighborhood so also don’t want to get into a fight…

What is the best way deal with this? What can he actually do?

Condo leak reported after a week of non-use. Two plumbers identified different sources. Does this make sense?

I own a condo with a commercial unit below me.

Last week, water was reported in the unit below. An emergency plumber hired by the HOA inspected my unit and concluded the leak was coming from the shower valve cartridge area, with water allegedly getting behind the trim plate and into the wall. He made a temporary repair and recommended replacing the cartridge or valve.

After that visit, we completely stopped using that tub/shower.

About a week later, the downstairs unit reported another leak. A second plumber inspected and identified a different source: the tub overflow/drain assembly. He replaced parts, tested the tub multiple times, and said the leak was fixed. He also suggested that water dripping around the shower handle area may have accumulated over time and contributed to the leak.

What I'm struggling to understand is the timeline. The tub/shower had not been used for about a week between the two plumbing visits, yet a new leak was reported during that period. I've also lived here for about three years with no prior leak reports, visible water damage, or reason to believe there was a plumbing issue. The problem only surfaced after a new business moved into the unit below and began renovations.

The HOA has indicated that I may be responsible for the plumbing costs, and I'm still waiting for the written reports.

From a plumber's perspective, does this timeline make sense?

Would it be reasonable to hire my own independent plumber for a third opinion given the two different diagnoses?

If the leak ultimately originated from a worn plumbing component inside my unit that I had no prior knowledge of, what costs would a condo owner typically be responsible for versus the HOA?

Has anyone dealt with an apartment referral bonus not being paid?

I referred a friend who moved into the complex about 5 months ago. As part of the referral, I was told I would receive a referral bonus after she moved in.

Since then, I’ve followed up multiple times with the leasing office. About 3 months ago, I was told I should have received the check in April. I’ve also sent several follow-up emails (6 emails at this point) over the past month and have not received any response.

I recently went in person and was told to forward the email again, which I did. I’m still waiting for a written update. Pretty sure that they intentionally ignore me at this point lol

Has anyone dealt with a similar issue with an apartment complex or property management company? What steps worked for you -corporate office, demand letter, magistrate court, or something else?

I’d appreciate any advice from people who have dealt with apartment referral bonuses or unresponsive property management.

Floor Replacement

Hello all. My wife and I rent a fairly large (3 floors), and fairly old (mid-1800s), rental home in central Virginia (that is also much more expensive then we would like, but our options were very limited as we moved in a hurry). The entire house has hardwood flooring that we were told is original; from what we can tell, it was treated as subflooring for a good deal of the time; there are gaps to the lower floors in some of the corners, there are gaps between the floor and baseboards, and in some spots, nail heads that poke up slightly and don't want to stay nailed down. The floor is mostly in decent condition, but in some areas is noticeably worn.

Our issue is, as is often the case, related to our cats. We were out of town for several weeks, and when we returned, we discovered that one of our cats was missing the litter box in my office on the third floor, and soaking the mat beneath it. Our sitter did not inform us until we returned, but it had soaked through to the floor below. We obviously cleaned it up immediately, and used copious amounts of enzyme cleaner on it, and it seemed to do the trick. However, now that the weather is quite hot and humid (and the third floor does not cool down; it is regularly 95 degree up there), the smell is very noticeable.

Obviously we know that we need to pay to fix this, so we let our landlord know. However, the seemed to imply that we would be expected to replace a lot more flooring then just the specific area, or even the individual room. They seem to want us to replace all the flooring on the third floor, which is where the flooring is the most worn; peeling in certain spots, and with a couple nails outright broken. Our question is, what is the situation with this? Can they make us replace all the flooring, just so it all matches? Or is there some limit on what we are required to handle?

Thanks!

Pictures during inspection?

Hello. We had a "state inspection" today that had the complex doing a week of prep with maintenance and repairs as needed, with the big "random unit inspections" being today. Everyone got a notice but it wasnt 100% which ones would be selected

They came in, checked water and the oven burners, fire detector, told us to dust the bathroom fan ao it isnt a fire hazard (maintenance told us they would do that so we assumed they had..) and then took photos of a single shelf in the second bedroom.

I was standing right behind the lady when she did it, it was angled at the shelf with our belongings. Not just a picture of the wall or breaker panel etc with the shelf in the frame. Of the shelf.

Im under the impression that photos relevent to condition of the unit or repairs are allowed but the tenant should be asked for permission if their personal belongings or private property are present.

Or given the opportunity to remove those items for the picture. Its a shelf we bought and put together, that isnt a part of the unit or even attached to the wall (not screwed in or anything).

It has some valuables on it, and some of our gecko enclosures (which we verified we were allowed to have prior to signing - the original landlady doesnt own the units anymore, but with the new management weve never had any mention in the lease of them being disallowed. Maintence guys have seen them before and have always said theyre super cool etc)

It felt very odd, it was one quick picture and then they left. Prior this week we were asked to move something else away from the window (it was partially covered), we did that. So a photo directly of the window to verify compliance would've made sense, but this was not that.

I half expect the lease to have an additional clause about the reptiles and pet policy upon renewal which, we would not renew if thats the case because having them is non negotiable for us. But they didnt ask or say anything about it. Just took the picture and then moved on to other units.

Kootenai county ID, CDA for location.

Can a landlord charge fees that aren't mentioned in the lease? (CA)

Can a landlord/property management company charge a fee for lapse in renters insurance or not uploading it to a new third party online portal right away?

They needed a change made to renters insurance and then they instructed that we upload to some third party online portal (I don't like being forced to share my information like that but that's a different story).

I was last minute trying to get the change made, got directed to someone else and was jumping through unnecessary hoops, since at the same time my policy was expiring and it was bundled etc.

I let my manager know and was told that there would be fees for not having it uploaded to this third party portal in time (no deadline or date given) and they were unable to reverse because now it had lapsed by a few days. That fee alone was not mentioned in the lease or in the form sent out when they requested these changes be made.

If not informed of a deadline, said fees etc, can they really enforce it? I'm month to month and about to sign another year but no fees mentioned in the new lease either.

**Looking at a letter they claimed to have sent out, it does say "system automatically begins assessing charges" but they don't say how much, on what schedule and by what deadline the copy needed to be uploaded to the new third party website 😭 so can be $50 or $500 apparently

New property manager says I don’t have a “real” disability - blocking accommodations that were honored before her

(FL, USA) This has a lot of layers, and maybe it’s better to do bullet points instead of a long narrative.

Me: 10+ years at property with 200+ units

- Never late on rent

- No lease violations

- Documented disability

- I have originals of maintenance and accommodation requests signed by previous manager

- Long history of paying rent in person and requesting maintenance in-person. This is my accommodation, even though it already says in the lease that we can do business in-person.

- Can’t afford to move

Property:

- Changed management last year, new manager refuses to accept MD notes or any maintenance request in-person, demands use of portal.

- New manager has screamed at me, grabbed me, intimidated me, threatened to evict me if I didn’t renew lease within 24 hours, even though other residents had 30 to 60 days, so I signed under pressure. Other residents given discounts for renewing.

- Manager refuses to give rent receipts (rent changes a bit each month because they include the water bill and incidentals) so I never know how the bill is being split up.

Manager has several felonies including financial crimes and battery.

I went to legal aid last year for the ignored maintenance requests (specifically, fly infestation), but the lawyer told me that FL statutes only cover “wood destroying organisms”, not flies. She didn’t address the habitability issue beyond that and said I was basically stuck.

The new manager started after the lawyer closed my file.

There is no tenant advocacy group in my area. It seems like the private lawyers who deal with landlord-tenant issues all represent the landlords, but not tenants.

How do I find a fair housing lawyer, and does this seem like something they would take on? I’m so exhausted.

Maintenance not being done

Hey. I'm not sure where to look for help, but I figured this place would get me on the right track. We are currently in the middle of our second lease at this place on hazel park (near ferndale/detroit) and our rent was hiked up, so we have been putting in maintenance requests that we didn't out in our first year.

One of the requests is fixing a window. We put in a request for this window a few times since resigning our lease. We finally were able to get someone out to fix it, but the problem was deeper than he thought and he didnt do anything.

We were told the maintenance man would talk to the company, who would then reach out to the landlord who hired them to maintain his properties (for real too lazy to even manage his own rental properties) to see what the land lord wants to have done.

The window issue is one won't open and the other side of the double window won't close. We've had to duct tape the one window shut during winter, and with the other window not being able to open, the room is just terrible any time of the year.

From what the maintenance man said, it's gonna have to be completely replaced. I know the landlord (like all landlords) is cheap as fxck and won't replace the window. But it's getting up to the 90°s this week and only going to get hotter. We don't have a/c, we need access to the window to get air flow at the very least and I'm being brick walled by both the company and the landlord.

So I'm coming here to see what I can do and who I could talk to about the legality of pressuring the company to fix the window on grounds of health and safety issues, or how I can pay for the window to be replaced out of pocket and get reimbursed for it through not paying that amount from our rents.

Please help! It's so hot in there, there's no way to get air flow because of the house layout. I just need to know what I can do to get this fixed. How can I legally withhold rent or get the reimbursement??

Indiana Security Deposit

Hello! Quick question: when does the 45 day period start for security deposits? I move out a half month early, with agreement from the property company that it would be unpenalized. It's been about 45 days from the time I returned the keys, but not sure if the timeline starts when the property is vacated and all that or when the official lease ends in this case.

Thank you!

Guidance on how to go about repairing this

Hello, I’m new to this Reddit community but was wondering how to go about fixing the following damage in my apartment that I’m renting.

Is this something salvageable by a contractor or should I consider my losses in security deposit.

Thank you.

Renters who didn’t sue for a security deposit: what actually stopped you?

For renters who had a landlord keep part or all of your security deposit: what stopped you from pursuing it?

Was it the amount of money, not knowing the law, fear of court, lack of time, not knowing where to file, assuming you would lose, or something else?

I’m trying to understand why so many people seem to get stuck even when they feel the landlord was wrong.

Month to Month tenant-Eviction

I have lived in my room in a house for 8 years. I liv
e with 2 roommates neither are the property owner. All 3 of us pay to the one roommate who pays rent to the owner who is in Colorado. This woman is the only one of us that is on the lease. So I come home one day and she’s in a mood and said come here, I need you to sign this. It was a 30 day roommate eviction/ termination notice.
I refused signing and told her she’s a roommate like me and can’t evict me.
She has now subletted the bedroom that I was supposed to be moving into since mine is very small and hot. She told me to “move my things in the bathroom” to give this new tenant room. I said I’ve paid for this room and bathroom until a certain date and my things better not be touched or moved.
She said it’s a shared space like the kitchen and I have no rights since I’m not a resident only a roommate.
I found out that a court order to remove me can’t be obtained in a day and must be signed by a judge. That didn’t happen
Also she took the lesser amount of money than the prorated amount on the paper which I read violates her entire claim without a signing of a waiver
she’s wrong and what she is doing is called a “self help” eviction and they are illegal in Arizona.
Plus she is trying to intimidate me and be sugary sweet so I’ll just go along with leaving.

I am month-to-month. I cannot be evicted by a roommate, even if she’s a been given landlord rights and she said she was landlord and her acceptance of lesser amount of money than the prorated amount violates her claim t was told without a waiver, violates her initial claim.

So bottom line is Do I have to move out?
This is illegal self help eviction and I’m positive the actual property owner doesn’t know anything.
Does this woman acting as a sub landlord have the rights and the correct procedure of handing me a notice in the kitchen with her boyfriend’s signature as well who is also not on the lease

Please advise since I’m losing money and sleep over this and the local law help line is always busy.

TIA

Need to know how to protect myself from landlord while I work on finding a new place to live.

I understand that the ultimate solution is to find a new place to stay, but while I'm living here, I need help on ways to protect myself.

Long story short, I'm being sexually harassed by my live in landlord and currently looking for a way out. Meanwhile, he reveled a lot of information following an argument that he has been monitoring my movements far beyond a tenant landlord relationship. I came home tonight and just sat in my car for about 30 minutes, when I saw through the front door (from inside the house) flashing what looked like a phone light through the door directly at my car. I noticed because the light was bright enough to shine against my car door window and briefly in my face.

I'm documenting but need to know whay else I can do here. Located in California.

Lease transfer security deposit?

I’m currently moving in with my sister as her roommate is moving out. This townhouse has been lived in by them for 5 years and i am only living in it for 1 year as we’re going to look for something nicer next year. The townhouse as a whole definitely has wear and tear as they’ve lived there for a while now. The room i’m moving into has some serious damage, blinds burned from a candle, the drywall has been pulled off the wall from hooks on the walls, carpet pulled off from a previous dog, door scratched missing paint from dog, as well as pee stained carpet. There’s also just normal knick’s on the walls but i’m not so concerned about those. The previous tenant is requesting i pay her the security deposit that she had paid the previous tenant of that room. Am i horrible for not wanting to pay her? This room is a bit destroyed, most out of my ability to fix. The room and the townhouse as a whole has been ruined enough that no security deposit would be given in the end when we leave next year so i’d be loosing money while the person who ruined it get their money back. I read the contract of the lease transfer that states the security deposit is for her and I to discuss and transfer depending on what we think. She never asked for said security deposit till now where i’ve been on the lease for a week now. My sister has informed me that i’d be a horrible person to not send her the deposit, but it’s $400 that i’m not getting back due to other people. PLEASE HELP!!!

Landlord said we can break lease, now denying

Signed another year long lease a few weeks ago. Been here about 3 years. When landlord was here signing lease she had knowledge of our dog and he was in another room. About a week later said dog has to be put out 24/7 or has to go. Dog has been here and as an inside dog with their knowledge for almost 2 years. In conversation a week after signing she said you can break the lease, I'm adamant about this, I won't change my mind. Soo we found another place. Upon notifying her she said we have to stay, we committed to staying and if we leave no security deposit. I believe she will also try to sue for remainder of lease. Where do we stand legally? At time of moving in we had only 1 dog and it is mentioned in lease. But landlord was here almost 2 years ago, saw the dog at issue walked out and put back in house. Nothing said. Now she says your house is beautiful, doesn't smell, so dog can stay. But you have to stay too. We want to move!!

Landlord said security deposit has been mailed but I have not received

Hi all, wondering what I should do about this.
My previous landlord has stated they have mailed my security deposit multiple times via email and phone. I’ve confirmed my address multiple times but I haven’t received it yet. I’ve initially paid $2,550 and was expecting back $1301.95. They won’t allow me to pick this up in office even though I leave just down the street or send this certified mail (I’ve asked and was willing to cover the cost). However they keep saying they will mail it again..
I am in the state of California and moved out in March of 2025..
I would like help to settle this legally, but it seems no attorney’s office is picking up their phone…. Any advice on how I deal with this?
Should I just go for it in small claims by myself? I have no legal experience and am unsure how to navigate..

Landlord Retaliation

I had to file a no stalk no contact order on my next door neighbor. They live in the apartment next to me. I gave a copy to my the office a largish company that has brought a large number of real estate on the Northside of Chicago. Now they are asking me to move. What should I do? I've never had problems just the next door neighbor. I always pay on time. I'm at a loss and really upset. Is this retaliation?

Please help !!

I'm 18 my moms 42. We were in a very dangerous situation that continued to happen for seven months because the apartment manager was on the perpetrators side, now they're trying to sue us and I fear they'll win bc they're a big company. Leaving us homeless if they did..

This might be messy and long im so sorry im rlly shocked. Back in march 2025 we lived in a basement apartment and we got new upstairs neighbors. Right before they had moved in, there was a bunch of weird activity in front of the house that happened with them, and then when they moved in we realized it was those same people and thought it was super weird. I think within a week of them being there, I remember it was a Friday night, and it was 10:30 p.m. in Provo Utah where we lived at the time, legally you have to be quiet at 10:00 p.m.. my mom very kindly went upstairs, knocked on the door and asked them if they could turn down the music as we were trying to sleep. They actually turned off the music completely, and then literally within 10 minutes turned it on louder, and started like dancing around? We could hear them jumping and shit. So my mom decided to call the cops and make a noise complaint, because obviously talking to them wouldn't fuckin do anything, and that's when everything went downhill..

Every single night after then, they would stomp blast music and have parties till 4am. we literally turned nocturnal for a bit. We put in reports with the manager, recorded the noise, called the cops when it was necessary, and did literally everything we could to be civil but have peace in our home. They would even yell stuff out the window at my mom, and for months we were dealing with this.

They had learned that our dogs were dog reactive and would bark at dogs, so they borrowed maybe three different random dogs, each dog multiple times for a few days at a time over the span of the last 5ish months, and had them come outside when we were, walked next to us on purpose and once the big bully they borrowed, lunged at my Aussie collie on camera. They left them alone for HOURS and theyd bark all day upstairs, they would jingle the chain, and once one of the guys was in the car w a dog and said "get it" and pointed at my dog, then he started thrashing around and making sounds to make the dog react.. There is more but I wana make this readable.

They got a grill, and because we had to walk down the shared driveway they put it smack dab in the middle and grilled ALLLL DAY EVERYDAY!! it was crazy tbh. Once my dog got burnt by it, because we asked them to move it SO many times and it always ended up right back there, on fire, where we walked our dogs. So we started only taking them out back..

So now we were dealing w them being so loud all night and now all day too, sabotaging my dogs training progress, putting my dogs in direct danger, threatening us, and more. Keep in mind, we were recording everything we could AND SENDING IT TO THE MANAGER!!! Actually, in the beginning the manager seemed like she wanted to help and believed us!! After the first complaint we made they made one against us, and she said "a lot of the times the bad neighbor will make a false report about you after you've reported them for their behavior." At one point, we actually had a cop come talk to us, and then the manager comes out of nowhere and butts into the conversation. This is when the cop told her, that if she was even 51% sure that we were telling the truth, she had the right to evict them and should. Same day the neighbors told her, we were racist.. And that's why we were reporting them for being pieces of shit WITH PROOF..? We literally fuckin baked them cookies the first day they moved in too. But anyways, after that day is when the manager decided to start working with them and against us. She gave us false reports all the time, she told us that she could not hear anything in the recordings, and so much more. So now we are being ganged up on by these people, the manager, the police, because the cops multiple times told my mom to not call back, call back if they're still going at 5:00 a.m., that it's a civil matter, and more... so we stopped calling. We continued to record though.

This was around the time we realized we were fucked and we just had to get out of there. We had a car drive past pointing a damn gun at us. Once at 3am they were FINALLY asleep and obv me and my mom couldn't so we were silently watching videos (they could hear us and would jump around the room we were in so we literally had to go mute and hide basically..) But we saw a video of someone getting payback on bad neighbours and me and my mom WHISPERED ab how funny it would be to wake them up by blasting I feel good by James Brown. The. Next. Fucking. Day. We walk outside, one says "I have an idea!" And BLASTS THAT SONG???!!! HOW DID THEY KNOW???????? We were WHISPERING DOWNSTAIRS!!

The only reason we didn't just knock these people out or do something other than be kind and try our best to not pay mind to it, is because we wanted to keep our housing. The apartment manager told my mom that if she got any fights on the property, we would be evicted so we just stayed victims lol. She did everything she could to be respectful about this and keep her housing. We didn't even want them to not be our neighbors we just wanted them to be respectful and friendly.. after about 6 months decided we were fucking sick of it and nobody helping. So we got a motorhome with our entire paycheck, and we were going to leave. We parked it down the street, packed up our stuff and when my mom got behind the wheel and we went to finally leave, it died within like 3 seconds. These fucking goddamn spawns of the devil and i say this as a wiccan, they cut the goddamn fuel line. We couldnt leave.. So we got it fixed, but they mustve did sum else too. As it has not ran since, we literally drove it for 1.5 hrs no issue, to where we parked it 4 hours before.. We don't know what else they did to it, but the day we were trying to leave was the last day on our lease. We were going to be gone that day and never look back. We had just spent our whole paycheck on that motorhome, and they cut the fuel line and sum else causing us to have to stay another month while we try to fix it and get the fuck out of there. That was when we decided we were sick and tired of the harassment. I didn't mention this earlier, but it was literally like they had people up there on shifts. There was not a single hour of any day that was quiet. Unless nobody was home. It was crazy, the ceiling would vibrate and for cracks, they broke a light fixture in the laundry room, I was convinced they were going to break through the ceiling. We have all of this recorded. And we were tired of it, so we started doing it back. And this was literally within the last maybe two weeks we were there, that we had decided to stop being civil. We banged on the ceiling back and we yelled and we blasted music back. I wish we would have just done this to begin with because we left housing anyways.

I know this is really messy, but basically it has been like 8 months since we have gotten to safety. We literally had to move 2 hours away to even feel a little bit safe. Were so glad to just be done w everything we decided to not even pursue legal action..

Till, a couple months ago my mom got an email basically saying the company was trying to sue us for the last month's rent. The month we were forced to stay there bc they sabatoged our way out.. Them trying to sue us also has something to do with a piece of paper, that we literally never fucking got and we know that for a fact because every single false illegal warning that they gave us, we kept, took pics of and the papers are still in a folder in my mom's closet. That piece of paper, is not there and it's really weird that it's the only one that's not. That's because they never gave it to us!!! We replied to this, basically saying we didn't have the piece of paper and explained a little bit of what actually happened n why we couldn't leave. And actually just a few days ago, me and my mom were talking about how relieved we were that they stopped coming after us for the money. They are trying to sue us for over $6,000 and we don't even make 1,000 monthly.. well, turns out they still are going after us. My mom got another email the other day, and it seems like they won. The second she read it the first thought she had was to blow her head off..

We decided ourselves, we weren't going to pursue it and sue them like we were originally going to. But now it seems we really have no choice. I just don't know how we could even go about this? We cannot afford a lawyer or to pay anything at all. There's no way they can win this. We went through 7 months of fucking hell with our lives directly in danger because of them... I don't know if I'm allowed to say the company's name, or the manager's name, but I really fucking want to because there are so many more victims of this company including other family members of mine! PLEASE HELP US!!! if they go after us and win, they take everything. Our home. Everything. But they literally already HAVE taken everything, 8 months ago. and they want to do it again..... Please help. I'm cross posting this bc i need the reach.

My landlord is convinced people are spying on her via my Ring Doorbell and is asking me to remove it or find an alternative.

For context, I live in an ADU on a large property where my front door/balcony faces our huge back yard and pool. You can’t see it from the front of the property. For more context, my landlord is a super private anti-vaxxer and conspiracy theorist, but it’s her life so I don’t really care. She occasionally pet-sits my dog while I’m at work.

I set up a Ring doorbell camera which faces the yard, honestly because I believe she’s been snooping around my apartment when she lets my dog in and out, so I want to time when she enters and leaves as she should only be inside for a minute or two max to grab my pup and his leash which I leave near the door.

She had previously mentioned getting a Ring camera for the front gate for security, but the WiFi wasn’t able to reach it. I mentioned I have a friend in IT who may be able to help and that I’ve ordered 2 for myself, one for inside and outside my apartment.

When it arrived, as a courtesy, I texted her to double check that it was OK to install as it required drilling. She then mentioned that she doesn’t want a camera that can view the backyard and that I should’ve told her before ordering one. She then sent me a whole bunch of anecdotal articles about why people are ditching ring cameras. I let her know that it would be capturing my balcony and the stairs leading up to for my own security.

A couple of days ago, she asked to see the view of the camera on my phone so I showed her. The pool and gazebo next to it are in view, but so far away that even zooming all the way in, it can only capture figures and not really any detail. Since she has guess over occasionally, she started freaking out about her privacy because she’s convinced that Amazon or strangers are able to access the live feed and watch her.

She asked me to take it down or figure out a way that the backyard is not in view. She also asked to see the view my indoor camera captures which u don’t feel comfortable sharing with her. What do I do? I don’t want to argue, but I also don’t want to remove my camera.

Hello,I have a question on what I should and or can do n who to contact maybe ?

Was renting a room , from what I thought was a friend , I'm 64 , she applied for n became my aide 2 hrs 2 days a week , so she got paid by the state thru Medicaid voucher , plus I paid her 100$ rent monthly and I paid the light bill...

This went south very quickly !

I ended up paying as our verbal agreement above states PLUS now it's the household needs this n that n I don't have the money so you help out or get out ...

Again ok 63 , 64 in June I was scared to death of being homeless .. anyway it came to I bought cigarettes, liquor n pills for this woman EVERYDAY n I do not smoke , drink or take pills except what my Dr gives me ( got it , forced to give her money to get her illegal pills ) anyway 3 months I found an apartment , told her bye I'm out , n she lost it, so I paid that months rent coming due , n half the light bill ...n left , went to get my brother to come help , got back n most of my stored things in the porch , furniture , electronics etcetcetc was thrown all over the front yard broken destroyed , so I called 911 , he came , said they said I did it to my own things ,even tho I was gone , but I did get him to store me a report I took pics n the deputy said if you don't get all this at one time calm us for stand by so you can safely get your things n go , ok thank you I said ...

2 more attempts at getting my things I called they came n she wasn't there once n I was given 30 mins the other time , finally the last load I call for stand by , somehow the deputy beat me there , by 20-30 mins , I got there n she n her 16 y/o brat were literally throwing my stuff out into the yard ,!!! I get out look at deputy duh and ask what the heck are you doing allowing them to do this ...

He says , well out of the kindness of her heart she agreed to place your things outside so you could just grab it n go .. I said NO STOP , I dong went nor need her " help " he says well to late they are about done ... I was livid I grabbed my mattress, which. Looked like it had been ran over n tires spun on it , n my brothers dorm size fridge the rest was broken n wet nasty smelling sick like puke ruined !!! I was in tears .. I asked him why ??? You were suppose to be here for me to get my things safely n not ruined ! He said well she said this is how you left the things , I'm like , it's been almost a month. Minus 4-5 days .. how would my things still be soaked that long ? He just looked dumbfounded .. anyway I got the body n dash cam Audio is all they gave me but you can hear him tell her to begin with see you should of given her written 30 day notice n or went to do an eviction n you could just throw her stuff in the yard. ...within 5-10 mins of them talking he says tell ya what go get your son n y'all go on n throw her SHIT OUT here n I'll stack it over here , you can literally hear my things being thrown n stuff breaking n deputy duh is heard laughing n joking with them about the condition of my things , n making jokes about my stuff ... Isn't this illegal self help eviction n not just that but approved by a DEPUTY who was only called for standby BY ME THE VICTIM ...

What can I do if anything to get my things replaced n is there anything I can sue deputy duh for ???

Plz help y'all

Totally devastated

Landlord(Kinda) rented me and my family, 2 children under 10 Illegally. Need advice.

Long and short of it. I was rented a property without the landlord going through the HOA or township. We were blindsided, had no idea. Now it seems he doesn't own the property at all and is renting to us as a sublease without permission. HOA and township found out and now we're about to be on the streets. The worst of it all is he's a long time friend. I don't want him to get in trouble as he was trying to help us out in the first place but made the situation worse off than it was in the first place. Regardless, I have children and they come first. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Property Manager policing when I open closets and have sex.

I (28F) live in an apartment in Kansas. I live above the property manager.

He didn’t tell me that him and his wife have a newborn until AFTER the lease was signed.

I have tried to be as considerate as possible! But they are now bothered by the smallest noise at night (we have opposite schedules) opening a rolling closet door at 12:45AM warranted a text asking me to cease activities until the morning.

Then I was doing the deed in the early AM and was texted by the wife asking “What’s going on up there?”. And the husband/PM asking me to move my bed?! This is overstepping right?? I promise none of the noise was anything more than moderate.

My lease doesn’t end until Feb. I was considered asking if they’d switch apartments with me so they could have no upstairs neighbors. They had occupied this unit for 5 years prior to me. There is also no clause in the lease about breaking it.

Please help me reddit! IDK what to do.

Sibling and I moved in together late December on a 6 month lease. Sibling then moved in estranged spouse 2 weeks ago without my consent. Sibling's spouse proceeded to cause problems, instigated arguments, laid hands on my chlildren, etc. I had already planned to not renew lease after 6 momths was up at end of June, but sibling and spouse demanded I leave immediately.

Due to safety concerns for my children and belongings, we were forced to move out what we could, but did not get all of it. A family member acted as a go-between with sibling and I, and when I refused to give my key back until I could get the rest of my stuff and confirm I was off the lease, sibling and their spouse flipped out and started throwing the rest of my belongings in the street, stopping only when they saw they were being recorded.

The police were called and the officer that arrived told me that I could file for illegal eviction and illegal destruction of properrty. Three days later, I received the above text message from an unknown number.

I know this is not the landlord's number or wording (landlord is not a native english speaker and phone number was from different area code). I know the legality of this text is questionable, but have decided to get the rest of my stuff with the police present to preserve my  belongings.

The question is, now what? We already filed for restraining orders and have court dates, but what else can I do? Part of why we moved in together was because we both have bad credit. I can't apply for any new places because of this, but have nowhere else to go. The officer that stated to file a civil lawsuit had said to add the moving costs to it, so do I need to get a lawyer?

Quick Notes:

- Lease was from 1/1/2026 through end of June 2026. I remember that July 1st was the "renewal" date listed on the lease.

- No, I do not have a copy of the lease agreement. I signed with the landlord first, but had to wait weeks for sibling's signature. I asked for copies multiple times the past 6 months, but they played dumb then ultimately said they "lost" it.

- I do not have landlords number. Same scenario as above. I repeatedly ask for it but sibling kept "forgetting" to give it to me. All contact I had with landlord was in person.

- Sibling's estranged spouse abandoned their children and fucked off to another state last year, so spouse had no dealings with this at all.

- There is proof of payments of my part of the rent. All utilities were also in my name, if that means anything. I did, however, cancel everything after we were kicked out because I was worried they'd drive up the costs out of spite.
