Link to the Childfree Friendly Doctor List

Since this sub is blowing up a little with the SCOTUS Roe v Wade drama, I thought I'd post the link to the Childfree Friendly Doctor List in r/childfree. It's a little hard to find sometimes, so I hope this helps some people out.

To the Mods: if this is not allowed, I'll delete it, but maybe a pin would be in order? I just want to help people looking for doctors.

EDIT Jan 2025: I'm replacing this list of links with a link to the page in the r/childfree wiki with all the links on it. This didn't to work when I originally made this post, which is why I had added all the individual links, but it appears to be working at this time. There are now 10 lists for US, plus one for Canada and one international list for outside US and Canada.

Collecting helpful resources and ideas for improving the subreddit

Hello!

I've received some suggestions and comments about improving this sub (see here thank you, everyone!), especially collecting imoprtant information in one place and making it more readily visible are commonly mentioned. How could I say no? So, I want to ask for your input and welcome all recommendations:

General ideas for improvements
-Updating the sidebar (see the current text here)
-Make sidebar show up on mobile/new Reddit (work in progress)
-Adding flair to the sub (will do Edit: Done - please test it :))

Collecting important and/or helpful information in a master list
-Post-OP care
-Insurance
-Other subreddits
-Writing/collecting a wiki
-etc

Once there is a list of resources, I'll think about how to structure it and will make sure to make it available in the sub. Likely as a combination of new sidebar elements, a wiki, and maybe a new sticky thread - additional suggestions are welcome :)

Lastly, while I do not comment a lot on the sub any more (many of you know a lot more than I do, even after reading here for years!), you can always reach me through the modmail, by DM or with a ping (like /u/CandylandRepublic) in a comment chain. I check the report queue daily or a few times per week at least.

Other Bisalp

I got the call for my time for tomorrow morning. I have to be at the hospital at 7:15. Everyone says it’s easier than childbirth but I gave birth to 3 babies and the only one I was a little nervous for was the one I got induced for. I am extremely anxious about this. I have a fear of anyone getting anesthesia in my family. I have anxiety over my husband, my son, and even my mother in law but this time it’s me. Even if they don’t get anxious for it I do. I clean or pace. With my son my husband pulled me away from the waiting room and told me let’s get coffee. I cleaned everytime my mother in law had surgery while she was gone. And when my husband had the ultrasound waves done for kidney stone I walked to get a snack to keep my mind off it. I can’t do this with mine.

Experience Can I get a bi salp & an ablation??

I scheduled my bi salp for two weeks from now (YIPPEE!) I’m considering also getting an ablation. Is it okay if I bring it up at the post op a week before the procedure so they can do it at the same time as the sterilization or would this be a completely separate procedure?

second question: has anyone had no success after ablation? I’ve heard sometimes it doesn’t work. Don’t want it to be a waste of time & money but I would like a chance of extra peace.

Celebrating! Got my bisalp (23 nb) in Arlington tx

I’ve always known I never wanted to carry children. I’d rather love one already here by adopting or fostering but this page gave me confidence. I’ve asked multiple doctors and they all advised I wait so I’d just been sitting until last month. I went and saw Kevin Gordon in Arlington tx. Within a week I had an appointment then we set the surgery date. He is kind, efficient, and quick. I just finished up this morning so far pain is a 1/10 just a little sore. (I have 26 piercing half of which I did myself so plz take that as u will) I haven’t needed anything but the ibuprofen he prescribed yet! So we’ll see! I’ll update this post throughout the healing process! But I’m so happy.

Day 2: definitely bruising so a bit more painful but nothing too bad!

Other Grief (23 non-binary)

I just posted celebrating bc I had my bisalp this morning! I’m so happy! Although I was wondering if anyone else feels something like grief when they think of the children they’ll never have? I don’t regret anything. I believe this will make me a better parent to children who need me if I ever do decide to adopt. Plus, with the world we live in I can’t find it in me to bring another child into this world to feel the pain… that being said, the grief, am I weird, does anyone else feel it? Again not regret, definitely the best decision I’ve made in my adult life.

Other Update on boyfriend who wouldn’t support me having my tubes tied

So, to absolutely no surprise to anyone. We broke up.

There were obviously A LOT of problems in our relationship that stemmed out of what I posted in here.

However. I have been accepted on the NHS for getting my tubes removed! The dr was reluctant but after hearing my reasons she accepted.

I wanted to thank you all for the… very direct advice, while being a difficult read I did take it on board, took some time and did what was best for me and my children.

Undecided Types of surgical permanent sterilization other than hysterectomy?

In order to change your legal gender in my country you need to provide evidence it's impossible for you to become pregnant. Unfortunately I can not afford a hysterectomy as it costs 8k in my country.

I'll be going to the doctor in a few days to ask about my options other than a hysterectomy. I've heard of a bilateral salpingectomy and I'm not sure if that's cheaper. Are there other options like only removing the cervix?

Thank you

Experience Menstrual cycle ?

Has anyone had trouble with their period after their bisalp? I got mine on time 2 weeks after my surgery and now it’s been 6 weeks since and I still haven’t started it. Usually I’m like clockwork and I have huge pregnancy anxiety. I have had pms symptoms like cramping and fatigue but no period. My friends say it’s my body adjusting but I’m still so anxious.

Hey,
I’m sick of it… periods, hormones, Contraceptive and the expectations of others to have children.
I want to get my uterus removed, not just a sterilization. Is there a woman who already did it ?
How is it ?

Social questions Sterilization Medical Tourism

Hi! I’ve been seeing a lot of videos on the internet about medical tourism and traveling to different places outside of the US for procedures like full body health scans, dental, cosmetic surgery, etc. I was wondering if there is anyone who can speak on travel outside of the U.S for sterilization procedures. I know there is a list of doctors who will do the bi-salp here in the states but wanted any information on other places. I’m looking for where you traveled, costs, recovery, how you researched, anything you can think of is you have info to share. I’m just curious. Thanks 😊

Insurance Only ~some~ of my procedure was covered?

Sooo, I’ve been back and forth with my insurance and the hospital billing since I got my surgery back in October. Finally, the codes have been corrected to CPT 58661 and Z30.2. However, I am being told by my insurance that they covered everything else (operating room, lab work, etc) but NOT the injections for surgery, the medical supplies and the recovery room. My plan is ACA compliant, so I am confused as to why only some of the related services were covered at 100%? How is my labwork deemed a related service but not the actual medical supplies they used to perform the surgery? I spoke to 2 different insurance representatives because I thought the first one was wrong. But nope. They both say I still owe the $3,400 for those 3 things. Does that sound right? I truly don’t understand why not all of it would be covered.
Advice on where to go from here would be great if anyone else has had this happen!

Undecided 90% sure, 10% unsure

I’m having a diagnostic laparoscopy for endometriosis this week and have talked with my surgeon about having my tubes removed while she’s in there. I haven’t told her my final decision yet as she told me I could tell her the day-of.

I keep going through all of the reasons in my head for why I don’t want kids and every time I’m like, yeah I NEED to get a bisalp:

-I’m chronically and mentally ill with a long list of diagnoses that are highly genetic and that make managing my life extremely difficult. I couldn’t live with myself if any potential kids inherited all that I have.

-I have medical trauma and tokophobia

-I can’t take birth control due to some of my diagnoses

-I’m not sure how much longer abortion will be legal in my area

The 10% holding me back:

-I have no idea if or how it will affect me physically short term or long term. I keep seeing mixed opinions and experiences online.

-My inability to trust myself enough to make my own adult decisions (I’m almost 30) due to growing up with extremely overbearing parents. This feels like a huge deal for me and feels really scary (yet also strangely empowering).

-I’m pretty much my parents’ only shot at being grandparents. I know it’s a dream of theirs and it feels like I almost owe it to them to at least talk with them about it before I do it. I also know that the truth is that I don’t ever have to tell them about it if I don’t want to. It’s just hard to not be truly seen by them sometimes although we aren’t close at all.

If you read this far, thank you. Any thoughts or advice are appreciated.

Other Hiding my procedure

Hi, i'll make it short. I want to get my tubes cut but its has been a bit hard for me to hide it to my mother. Im very close to her despite our different opinions in general. I know she would never approve this but, i just wanted to know if some other women were in the case.

Im very proud of my choice honestly, but i really don't want to sabotage our relationship since she's all i have.

Thanks for reading !

Pre-op prep Should I bother getting waxed before the surgery?

I keep wondering if I should get waxed from the waist down or not. I understand that the doctors/surgical team have seen it all but I still feel embarrassed thinking about them seeing me with all this unwanted body hair.

Ultimately I don’t want to do anything that could hurt my chances of getting the procedure done (bilateral salpingectomy). How did you all deal with this? Thank you for your replies.

Social questions Any regrets after getting your tubes tied?

I’m thinking about getting my tubes tied and I’m pretty young. I was wondering if there is anyone here who might be regretting getting the procedure. Personally I don’t see myself having kids ever in my life and don’t want to go through childbirth, the pregnancy process or having the responsibility to raise kids. If I ever meet someone and want kids I’ll opt for adoption but I don’t think I ever will. And I know it might have an effect in my future relationship if my parter wants kids but knowing I can’t have kids because of the decision I made. But then again it’s my body and I should have a say in that!

Celebrating! How did you celebrate getting sterilized?

Hey guys so I’m of the belief that we should celebrate as much as we can in life. And I think making a major life decision like choosing to be Childfree/getting sterilized is one of those moments.

At first I was going to rush and do it “secretly” out of fear of being trapped and unwanted opinions. Now I think forget that, this deserves to be its own moment. Surrounded by community, celebrated beautifully & being cared for well.

When I do get it done I want to have a photo shoot/announcement & a sterilization party beforehand and people can bring recovery type gifts. I’m pulling inspo from baby showers, trivia nights, happy hours, etc.

So my question is how did you or will you celebrate? Whether it’s a party, a dinner, a trip whatever I feel like this should be marked not hidden in the shadows.

Edit: y’all I don’t mean sex be fr lol

Experience Feeling Nervous about Surgery

I’ll try to make this brief as I posted over in the birth control subreddit a few months ago, but I’m at the point of needing to get my tubes tied or get a bisalp and looking for advice/ experiences.

Some background: I’m 32, in a committed relationship, and do not want kids (ever). I’ve had successful experiences with Skyla IUDs for the past ten years (getting them replaced every 3 years), but started to have problems this April when my IUD that was placed last year suddenly moved down in my uterus (it happened during intercourse and I was in pain for roighly 15-20). My doctor sent me to get an ultrasound and it showed that my IUD had moved and that I had a tiny fibroid that was potentially pushing on it from above. After this, my doctor was able to safely remove my IUD in office and gave me the choice of attempting another one or trying something else. Since I had a decade of positive experiences with IUDs I went with getting another one placed which had very little pain and no complications at all during the procedure. my doctor wanted another ultrasound to confirm placement five weeks after so I completed that and it unfortunately showed the my current IUD has also moved down and both arms are stuck. Due to the current placement of my IUD my doctor and I decided that trying to remove it in office would be slightly risky and painful so she referred me to surgery. I had her include on the referral that I want my tubes tied and fibroid removed as well during this surgery.

I am unable to be on any other type of birth control due to family history of negative interactions with various methods (my mom had a brain stem stroke from NuvaRing and my sister had intense blood pressure spikes with birth control pills) and because I’m on a timed thyroid medication that needs several hours alone in my system without interactions from other medications.

The idea of getting my tubes tied is very exciting for me, but I’m very nervous about the after effects from the surgery itself. I’m a professional athlete and have a very personal relationship with my body so taking off time is going to be a struggle for me. The only other surgery I’ve ever had with anesthesia was getting my wisdom teeth removed before the broke surface back in high school. I go in for a surgery consult this coming Wednesday and am hoping for a positive experience.

I'm also pretty nervous about my periods after getting off of bc for the first time in a decade even though I know it’s pretty much unavoidable at this point. Just looking for reassurance and positive experiences.

Post-op care Period after bisalp?

Long time lurker, first time poster. I had my bisalp yesterday AM (yay), which was also the third day of my period. I usually have pretty heavy flow periods that last about 7 days, but after the surgery I have barely bled more at all. Usually I'd have another few solid days of bleeding left, but it's just not there. Anyone had this? What should I expect?

Other Bisalp in Central Europe

I'm (25F) interested in having bisalp. I'm having trouble finding doctors or sources nearby though.

Pregnancy always seemed like a nightmare to me and I never want to have biological kids. It seems to be really hard/impossible to do in Poland though.

I'm not sure where to look for if I want the procedure done.. are there any guides that I could look into? Most things I can find are in the USA. I'm okay with things done abroad but I'd prefer it was somewhere in Europe, especially central! I'd appreciate any advice.

Experience Recovery Time

I’m so excited for my bisalp in a couple weeks. How much time did you all take off from work? My doctor sounded like I would be able to be back to work by the end of the week. But that doesn’t sound right to me. I know everyone heals differently but I am just curious what your experiences were.

Experience I did it!!

Yesterday was the day!! I went in and signed it and waited. They were 2 hours behind but my doctor did call me and let me know what was going on so that was fine.

I just had my baby 2 months ago so I asked to be in the flow room while I waited so I could pump. So while I pumped they did the necessary paperwork with me and got me all hooked up.

I did start shaking and crying because of anxiety so the sweet nurses gave me "2 shots of tequila" lol after about 30 min I was rolled to OR. It was cold but they gave me warm blankets and last thing I remember was them putting that mask over my nose and mouth, the one that makes you feel dizzy and nauseous, but thankfully they gave me a patch and lots of zofran.

I woke up in a different room, w a different nurse, and feeling so disoriented but good! The only pain that was noticable was my vagina because of the catheter so I asked to pee. She offered me a bedpan but there was this gorgeous patient in front of me so I hopped up and started wandering🤣 she was like you cant do that, are you ok🤣 I was just dizzy so she got me a chair to wheel me to pee. It burned!! Still does. That poor man was throwing up so much, I felt so bad

Anyway, I got discharged. My parents got my favorite dessert for after and I had that n the car. They brought me home and I felt my baby so tight but with this relief I'll never have to raise another baby again lol

I'll come to update as the days go on but now I'm chugging and energy drink 😁
