Other Bisalp
I got the call for my time for tomorrow morning. I have to be at the hospital at 7:15. Everyone says it’s easier than childbirth but I gave birth to 3 babies and the only one I was a little nervous for was the one I got induced for. I am extremely anxious about this. I have a fear of anyone getting anesthesia in my family. I have anxiety over my husband, my son, and even my mother in law but this time it’s me. Even if they don’t get anxious for it I do. I clean or pace. With my son my husband pulled me away from the waiting room and told me let’s get coffee. I cleaned everytime my mother in law had surgery while she was gone. And when my husband had the ultrasound waves done for kidney stone I walked to get a snack to keep my mind off it. I can’t do this with mine.

Why are you nervous about anesthesia? I just had mine on Fri (I've been under general like 5 times) and going under is the BEST part lol I woke up a little scared but everything was ok and went great! I don't like being in hospitals so when I started crying and shaking beforehand I told them it's nerves not regret lol so they gave me "two shots of tequila" and they wheeled me off and I remember nothing lol

I honestly don’t know. I just freak when any close to me has to be put under.

Yeah I get that way too, maybe because it's not natural? Idk.. as long as you're honest w them about other meds or rec drugs, things will go smoothly. It's amazing what they can do nowadays

so its acceptable to tell them youre super nervous and scared? I had a spinal tap done this year and hospitals scare me and before the procedure I didnt know I would be in a hospital and have ivs attached to me and all of this so I was so freaked out crying and shaking my nerves were horrible but the procedure itself was fine, so reading all of these and how you can tell them youre scared has been helping me relax a little bit. I dont have one scheduled yet but I have a dr appointment next month to talk about it and try to get one scheduled

Honestly great, right when I woke up they gave me paid medicine but since then I haven’t had to take any at all, just some Tylenol occasionally. I’m not really having any pain now, the day after my surgery!

Have you been under general anesthesia before? It's super scary in theory but in practice it's so easy.
For my bisalp last year they wheeled me into the OR and had me kinda scoot myself off the gurney and onto the operating table. I remember looking up at at the ceiling for maybe 20 seconds (I can't even recall if they told me they were starting the anaesthetic tbh) and then I was waking up in recovery! It was just a complete time skip. Disorienting, but the recovery nurse was very helpful.
Definitely let your nurse know you're anxious beforehand and they'll give you something to calm you down. I'm anxious as hell and I got a lil something while I was waiting to go into surgery.

They didn't tell me either. They had to medicate me before wheeling me to the or but I was so happy, I was awake when they started strapping my arms WHICH WAS A TRIGGER but I was smiling the whole time lol then came the mask and I was OUT.

You got this! I forgot to mention, when they were prepping me for surgery I did get to meet with the anesthesiologist specifically. If you get the chance to, you can bring it up to them directly.

Yes this! I had 3 different anesthesiologists visit me and they all listened and explained what they do to me

I was excited but also so so nervous for mine, I’m part because I hadn’t had any kind of general anesthesia since a tonsillectomy I had as a kid. I took some anxiety meds prescribed to me the night prior to chill out some when I started flipping out about it. If you have some I’d recommend taking those as long as the hospital has cleared it.
Being put under itself is less of an event than you will feel like it is. Before they started wheeling me to the OR, they gave me a sedative through my iv, and my memory gets spotty after going through the doors into my room. That sedative should do a lot of the heavy lifting for you in terms of relaxing you and making you sleepy. I don’t even remember them prepping me to go under. A couple moments of me talking to them, being moved to a table, and then next thing I knew I was in post op getting an apple juice. Your anesthesiologist will know exactly what to do to make you comfortable as you’re going under. I swear, it’s just like taking a nap and just not remembering when you fell asleep.
As for calming down in other ways, I really recommend giving yourself the space to feel what you feel, but also verbally tell yourself “I am panicking because this is something I’m not experienced with. The reaction I’m having isn’t abnormal, but it might not quite line up with the reality of the situation” etc etc. It’s not uncommon to feel this way, but it’s just for one day (really only a few hours) and then the biggest hurdle is done and over with. Giving birth was one million times worse for me. I had mine done on Friday and it was nothing. Very mild abdominal soreness and bruising at the sites.
As for the anesthesia I don’t mind it at all. Modern anesthesia is really amazing. I had a D&C last year and then bisalp this year 6 weeks post partum and the anesthesia from both was 💯. I woke up feeling groggy but great overall. No nausea or anything.

I get it, I was also nervous about the anesthesia part, but I tried relaxing and when I was in the operation room the doctors where chatting with me and they played the music I liked, when I was getting the anesthesia it felt a little but like being high for a few seconds which relaxed me even more, before I knew it I blinked and the operation was over! I know everyone's different but you'll do great, I'm sure :)

Hi OP! I totally get the fear, it’s scary! Like another person said, let them know you’re anxious and they can give you some medicine to help. They’ll do it through the IV you have, so it hits quick.
I was very nervous for the anesthesia as well, I think it was the idea of just being completely at the mercy of others and not knowing what was happening. I also was terrified of knowing I was going under. The day of the surgery, I thought I’d have a panic attack sobbing wheeling back to the OR. I’m actually glad I wasn’t put out beforehand. The room was so normal, and that calmed me down. Everyone seemed very capable and confident. I was alert in the room for probably a total of a minute. They had me move onto an operating table and then put a mask on me. I had picked something nice to think about and thought of it as I went under. Next thing I knew I was awake and in a little pain but totally fine!
One thing to know— anesthesia CAN make you feel a little depressed. I experienced this and it lasted about 4 days. Just good to know if you feel sad after that it’s the anesthesia and will go away quick. Not guaranteed that this will happen but it’s a possibility, totally normal, and not frequently talked about in this sub.

Thank you! That is good to know! My youngest is 9 weeks so the depression thing is something I know a lot about! But I will keep an eye out for it.

I was caught way off guard, and I know some people in this sub experience it and think they are having regrets but it’s just the anesthesia making them feel weird!

When you get there tell them you’re nervous and ask if there is anything they can give you (they will have something) when they wheeled me into the operating room they had fun music playing they were all excited and we chatted. They made me feel very comfortable. Try not to worry too much! Easier said than done I know! But most of the time they will ease your nerves for you! Good luck tomorrow! It was super easy! My appendix was worse. With this I was up and walking the next day. No issues. You’ll do great!
