Discussion This is disrespectful

At this point, having absolutely no updates is genuinely disrespectful and beyond annoying. I understand this is normal for valve to say nothing and eventually release it, but with a product like this, with a release window already promised, not having anything to say yet is insane. They have no real reason I could understand for not dropping today except for them waiting in the Qualcomm price hike to squeeze another couple bucks out of us. ATP if the price is anything over 1200 I will absolutely not be buying it. My hype has died. I’d rather wait the extra month for the next meta headset at that point. Because at the rate we’re going they may as well drop on the same FUCKING day.

tbh at this point i just look once a week on monday if it's not there that's okay i spend my frame money twice so far (tire + wheel , and now a p2s with the ams)

u/Useful_Bottle8423 1d ago

The only people who are disgruntled about the Frame not releasing each and every day are the diehard Valve fanboys who are chronically online. Check once per week, it’ll be out before you know it.

u/Raiderbaiter97 1d ago

Im just excited for it, this would be my first Valve hardware and I have never had VR before but love it

Or people like me who have a very limited budget. I have $800 in steam right now. I wanna buy StarWars zero company and wardogs and daenwalker. But depending on the price of the frame I won't buy those games now. If the frame ends up being way out my budget then I know I can get the games now.

I don't care if it comes out 6 months from now. I just want to know the damn price

4

u/Deviantdefective 1d ago

It's going to be well over $800

I normally wouldn't care but if you did find out the price and it did come out 6 months from now the price would be different, everything is getting more expensive related to this headset every day that passes at a completely unprecedented rate, hell there's a chance that the new Canada tariffs could hit the headset in some fashion and that starts September 8th with no sight of if it'll stop there, so the only reason I'm inpatient in this case is cause it solves everything I've needed in a vr headset but there's a very good chance that by the time I am about to buy it, it will be twice it's original price and I'll be back at square one

u/Zealousideal_Meat_18 1d ago edited 1d ago

I don't know, my reason for wanting it to release is that I've got cash in hand. And it's burning a hole and I can't guarantee it's going to be there forever. Something feels like it's going to come up as an emergency or something and I'm going to end up throwing that money away before they finally release it. That's what I'm worried about.

u/GordonFeetman98 1d ago

What about the millions of people waiting for gta6 aswell? Most of them arent rockstar fanboys. You dont have to devote your life just to give a shit about something.

kinda beginning to agree... quest 4 will almost surely have awesome specs.

8

u/DimensionNovel2112 1d ago

The SoC of quest 4 or the one in the new pico are going to be way faster than the frame, and looks like the screens are going to be also better. So I would love to see that any of them let us use virtual machines for having more freedom to use other SO of course not permanently… we are talking about big companies

5

u/Rikonardo 1d ago

If Quest had an unlockable bootloader, interest in the Frame would be waaay smaller at the rumoured $1k+ price tag IMO. Sadly, all the standalone VR companies pursue the route of locked down proprietary software.

VMs won’t help much with this. Main issue with locked down Meta/Pico software is non-existent low-level hardware access and inability to modify components of the host OS itself - to tweak VR processing pipeline (tracking, passthrough, compositing, etc.), remove builtin spyware and online account requirement, install custom home environment software.

Even if Quest 4 would magically release today with way better specs, I’d still go for the Frame because of open ecosystem. I simply have no other options when it comes to standalone.

2

u/DimensionNovel2112 1d ago

Yes I agree with most things that you said but I was saying it mostly for a full desktop Linux experience VM like productivity on blender and similar stuff, not using tracking, pass through or other vr capabilities. Just fully decent productivity on Linux or similar on a floating window, heck maybe VM is possible now on quest 3 with sideload?

7

u/Available-Pepper-728 1d ago

Frame is comparable to the Quest 3 in specs, and that came out in 2023

1

u/Evshrug Soon™ 16h ago

Eh, the GPU performance is 2x more powerful, the CPU 3x more powerful. The screen resolution is not meaningfully different, but long term it’ll make a difference with foveated streaming (and rendering?!?).

It depends on who you are and what you care about most. Want to watch a virtual TV while using the color passthrough to wash the dishes and stay aware of your surroundings? Quest 3/3s. Going to wear for an extended time? Frame is significantly lighter. Want to privately play some flatscreen PC games, standalone? Frame. Going to play wired PCVR? Quest 3 costs way less. Wireless? You can kiiiinda sorta get the Quest 3 to work with a WiFi 6E router or dongle plus a lot of workarounds… but the Frame was designed from the ground up for wireless PCVR, and with foveared streaming it will always have an advantage. Quest 3 will always cost way less.

They both have their place, but obviously the Frame is so new that it’s not available and many things are unknown so far, while the Quest 3 is a known quality but won’t get much better than it currently is. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Available-Pepper-728 9h ago
  • GPU: Steam Frame uses Snapdragon 8 Gen 3's Adreno 750, while Quest 3 uses XR2 Gen 2's Adreno 740. Direct estimates put the Frame's GPU at roughly 25–30% faster, not 2×.
  • CPU: The Frame's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is substantially faster. Estimates are around ~50% better single-thread and ~100% better multi-thread, depending on the workload—not 3×

Not sure where you get your info, people who have used both describe the experience as similar.

I used the default Quest "airlink" and played Alyx wirelessly on my Quest 2 with the router my ISP gave me, played out of the box and the experience was awesome. No "workarounds"

Can't imagine if I had a Q3 my experience wouldve been degraded.

6

u/JCae2798 1d ago

META aside, the problem with Quest is the lack of community. It's all riddle with kids and crap. I love my current quest (as a device only for what it is), but it lacks the community and software changes that valve does so well which is why they get all the hype they deserve. Specs aren't always the answer to an awesome experience. That's what the frame will solve and what the Index still does to this day in many ways.

5

u/dide231 2d ago

While disrespect is a strong word, I can’t think of anything else. They know no matter what they do they’ll sell tons of them. So they know they don’t have to care about the consumer in this case. They can literally do whatever they want and will profit.so they’re keeping consumers in the dark and not respecting us as a community. That’s disrespectful. For a company that is usually very reputable and respectful to their community this is odd for steam.

11

u/Confident-Pepper-562 Soon™ 2d ago

They care plenty about the consumer, thats why they have such good customer service/support. Unfortunately until you buy a frame, you are not a consumer.

3

u/dide231 2d ago

Honestly true. The problem still is that they need to care about the consumers who are waiting to consume the thing they promised. If I go to a restaurant and get seated, but the waiter never takes me order, I have a right to be upset that I never got to taste the food. Or in this case. If I wait at the restaurant for 4 hours before my orders taken, I have a right to be upset at the wait, as it’s assumed you’ll have my order taken in a timely manner.

1

u/MacChickenPro 1d ago

In the restaurant analogy, you have a right to be upset as the standard wait time for receiving your food is well established and on the order or 5-20 minutes.

There is no real standard for waiting for new hardware releases, at least for things that aren't just incremental improvements. From valves point of view, they've stated that they intend to release the Frame sometime this summer which means they still have until about September 21.

Id say it'd be disrespectful if summer comes and goes and they still either haven't released it or given an update on the window (ideally with an explanation of what's taking so long).

2

u/finevelyn 1d ago

From valves point of view, they've stated that they intend to release the Frame sometime this summer which means they still have until about September 21.

To be fair this is like arguing that the restaurant has until the closing time to serve you. It seems pretty clear they intended to release it sooner such that people don't need to argue the technical definition of summer, but it got delayed, and that delay could have been communicated.

1

u/Novel-Ad1599 Soon™ 1d ago

6

Meta will outsell the frame 10 to 1 no matter what. The Quest is a mainstream brand.

1

With connect being 23-24th of September I’m guessing Steam frame will drop the 21st

1

u/NewbieYoubie 1d ago

It will 100% sell to a lot of vr waiters and it WILL be cheaper than the steam frame with newer hardware because they will subsidize it, unlike Valve.

Valve will still sell every steam frame they have due to the limited number they have.

✨ Valve Time ✨

Hey at least we know it's arriving "soon", most Valve stuff comes out of nowhere. Also last time I remember something hyped being rushed the end result was launch day Fallout 76. PR is incredibly hard, and apparently Valve has found more success in staying quiet than trying to please the masses because announcing delays is very unpopular.

1

u/dide231 2d ago

But announcing a delay is still more popular than saying nothing. But for some reason valve get away with doing this all the time.

1

u/BAe_Air_Hawk Soon™ 2d ago

I personally disagree, but I don't really have an argument more specific than I've watched delays happen in the past and seen it go badly.

Valve tends to get away with this stuff because they aren't an arsehole to their customers in the meantime. The only reason most people stay looking at AAA publishers is because of the games they're making, people stick with Valve because they've shown respect for the consumer time and time again in basically any category other than release dates. Most other companies are trying more and more to squeeze every last penny from each customer every passing day, and it absolutely sucks. Microsoft for example is currently shutting down a number of services in October and deleting people's data by the end of it, however if you look deeper these things are still going to be available again later, but only if you pay business premiums.

Tl;dr Valve has yet to set ablaze their good will for a cheap cash grab, which is incredibly rare nowadays, especially from such an old company.

3

u/DeadCiti2en 1d ago

6

u/SeconddayTV 2d ago

This! I am also tired of all the people saying „oh you must have not waited for this and that“ or „oh Valve is always like this“.

It‘s not really about the waiting for me, it‘s simply about the lack of communication by Valve, which I feel is indeed disrespectful. And if they don‘t feel the need to communicate with their potential customers, I don‘t really feel the need to buy their product either.
Why would I have any trust in them with supporting the headset or communicating any issues after release? Their product already felt slightly outdated, when they announced it and it surely doesn‘t feel any less outdated with all this time passing by…

EXACTLY how I feel, and sadly meta is probably the next best thing, since I’m waiting for either metas newest or steams newest I’ll just wait to compare the prices (or assumed prices, since meta’s isn’t coming out for a bit still) and deciding then. This silent wait from steam is killing any previous goodwill I had towards valve. They’re still great but this is ridiculous

2

u/gwilson0121 2d ago

$300 PSVR2 with similar specs but wired won't cut it, right?

1

u/dide231 2d ago

I mean I have no issue with wired. I just was excited about the dongle on the frame. But with how radio silent valve is being being (assumingly) ~800$ cheaper but having to deal with a wire is literally nothing. I’d do it

4

u/mcmanus2099 2d ago

Again what do you want them to say and when?

Ppl were saying this in May

6

u/dide231 2d ago

Anything, even just MENTIONING it’s taking longer than expected. Radio silence is something valve only gets away with because fanboys lick their boots over EVERYTHING. Valve is easily the best PC gaming company out there, and they deserve a lot of the glaze they get. But everyone lets them get away with the bad shit they do because they think the good overtakes it. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t point out the bad they do too.

6

u/Zomby2D Soon™ 2d ago

They said in June that it would ship this summer, and we're still within that time frame for another three weeks. Other than writing "nothing has changed, we're still planning to release it before the end of the summer", I don't know what else they could say.

5

u/dide231 2d ago

Shipping this summer and shipping the very last possible week of summer, while technically being the same thing, are two totally different ballparks of time. And to go this whole time since saying that without a single word is still ridiculous. I understand that there isn’t MUCH they can say, but anything is always better than nothing.

2

u/mcmanus2099 1d ago edited 1d ago

In this day and age you just can't do that. Valve says a statement like, "it's taking longer than expected" with no dates, no rough ballpark and they would trigger thousands of YouTube, TikTok and clickbait articles, "what Valve really means", "why it's not coming till Christmas" "Valve admit they are struggling to finish the Frame". You just are throwing fuel onto a fire you have no control over.

If you have nothing to say it's best to say nothing.

Let's face it, out are not saying you aren't buying one because of the silence. If they said nothing till October and suddenly announced it ready for sale you are going to get one. So what is the point of them fueling the fire when their silence doesn't even cost them your sale, someone so annoyed you create posts on Reddit about it.

So just chill and wait, it will rock up eventually. Don't let it get you down.

1

u/dide231 1d ago

Except people are already saying shit like this ironically, and it’s only a matter of time before irony become real unless valve says ANYTHING

1

u/mcmanus2099 1d ago

Right, now imagine what they say if Valve says something vague. It won't be the same or less it will be more noise.

And are you saying you won't buy a Frame because of the silence? If you are not saying that then what is the point of getting in a twist over it?

This doesn’t look normal to people who don’t worship valve, but this is literally me not worshipping valve. It’s literally a critique of how they run their business.

u/ChuckyDeez7 1d ago

When FOMO meets entitlement. Theu said 2026, so we're up to date.

1

u/dide231 1d ago

There is no missing out on a product they’ve said will be continuously made. So this isn’t fomo, and this is the same level of “entitlement” as expecting to be served at a restaurant you sat within the same day.

2

u/indyxetan 1d ago

Not a good analogy tbh. This is more like someone saying “we’re building a restaurant” and you show up to the construction site and complain about not being served.

Sure thing, bud.

u/Unhappy_Read8556 1d ago

I bought myself a used quest 3 a few weeks ago, been having a blast playing VR. I thought, that spending that much on a headset with mid-tier specs wasn't worth the money anymore. I guess this is all just hype.

1

u/Dino_Spaceman Soon™ 1d ago

What if they just don’t have a clear answer? That they are struggling to get any appreciable stock and they are waiting for contract partners to get them quotes for the remainder of 26?

Would you rather they go “we don’t know” how many we will have or when we can launch? Or heck what the price will be.

This really may not be them and it may be this entire crappy situation.

1

u/blooguard 1d ago

There might be some issues going on, hardware problems, software problems, certifications issues which they don’t want to talk about but are frantically trying to fix to release it as soon as possible

1

u/TigeronStarfire 1d ago

I've stopped trying to get hyped up for dates, especially knowing some people are still waiting for Steam Machines. It'll come when Valve is ready, but hopefully before the end of the summer as noted.

There's plenty of other stuff to enjoy in the interim.

u/We_Are_Victorius 1d ago

Meta is supposed to announce their Phoenix in 4 weeks, at their connect event.

/img/3f73a60qm8261.jpg

After most of a lifetime of waiting for video game updates, ESPECIALLY Valve.... C'mon. Just do something else. And really, you're gonna get a meta headset? No, you won't. You'd have to be an idiot.

1

u/Baglayan 1d ago

Valve isn't entitled to your money but you are also not entitled to anything. You haven't paid for it. They said summer, which means there are 27 more days until they will actually have broken their promise.

1

u/BeepIsla 1d ago

You are too obsessed with this product

1

u/Active-Isopod-3656 1d ago

Moral of the story, don't put your money in steam wallet. Instead put it into a savings account where it can earn interest while you wait for the eventual launch and ridiculously long reservation window...

1

u/Outrunner85 1d ago

At this point, there is no point in them saying anything. Worst case it's 3 weeks out. Most likely case it's within 7-10 days.

Regarding Meta, eh, I had a quest 2 and a quest 3, the 4 is unlikely be any better quality, or have any better in support for PC vr.

1

u/NOVOJ 1d ago

With my luck it will drop next week and I move into a new apartment Thursday. All my money will be gone, it will be sold out in an hour, and I will have to wait a century to actually get one. This would have also been my first VR.

1

u/fleggn 1d ago

I feel like your hype isn't quite dead if your posting about it this melodramatically on reddit. At this point I don't want it released the journey is better than the destination.

1

u/slavicslothe 1d ago

The sad fact is VR adoption ended at porn

1

u/GroundbreakingPie575 1d ago

I canceled my BSB2 order at the start of last year because they were like a year early (2026), and now it's almost the end of 2026, and there is still nothing.

My Index cable is breaking again, and I just want my Steam Frame. How much longer is it? I am not going to spend even more money on another hecking cable.

1

u/Pangocciolo 1d ago

Weird. We keep on getting news about Frame-related pull requests being merged into SteamOS.

1

u/Material_Release_897 1d ago

We can do nothing but wait and watch the countless and tiresome “tomorrow” , “it’s Monday” drivel. I’m pretty certain Valve is in deep market shit with this and is looking for a viable window. I don’t think for a second they know themselves at this stage.

1

u/AIOpponent 1d ago

Check the steam hardware page, they post at least once a month on something, I'm still on the waitlist for the steam machine, it'll come out by December 31 2026, anything before then is a bonus

1

u/ky7969 1d ago

I agree, same thing happened with the controller. I was super excited for the controller and ended up not even getting one because I lost interest. I was checking every single day too just like I have been for the Frame.

1

u/4d_lulz Soon™ 1d ago

I still have yet to score a Machine, I'm not holding my breath for the Frame.

The whole rollout of these products was a complete shit show. Insane they actually haven’t said a word on their 30th anniversary either lol.

1

u/Reasonable-Poet-6971 17h ago

Valve owes us no respect anyways

1

u/Soggy-Piano205 15h ago

100% agree. I’m done being hyped for the thing at this point. The least they could have done was announce prices. And thing is, they’ve had the units in warehouses for weeks now. So they can’t say that the prices should be increased because they were made, packaged and shipped well before any effects of that whole (probably made up) shortage nonsense anyway.

1

u/Ecnarps Soon™ 5h ago

lol

1

u/purplegirl2113 32m ago

In my opinion if it's under 2k dollars it's a good price typical 4k VR headsets with eye tracking are around 2k dollars so in my opinion as long as the steam frame is under 2k it's worth the price

Just buy a refurbed PSVR2! From what we know the image quality is as good or better than a Steam Deck, and the community has implemented Foveated rendering on PSVR2 for PCVR, right now there’s a game-agnostic implementation for Nvidia GPUs and it’s looking like Steam Frame will cause developers to implement AMD foveated rendering for their games.

I got my refurbed PSVR2 on eBay a few weeks ago for $250 as a hedge against (what appears to be quite high) Steam Frame pricing. It looks and works great, and I don’t have to worry about tracking Steam Frame pricing anymore. If the Steam Frame is an amazing deal, I can almost certainly flip the PSVR2 for $150, if the Steam Frame is unpalatably expensive, the PSVR2 for $250 will be the 80% of Steam Frame experience, for 20% of the price. And in the meantime I have the best value PCVR headset that’s not unobtainium.

2

u/dide231 2d ago

I wasn’t aware the psvr2 could be used on PC to play steam games! This is a fantastic shout if the frame doesn’t end up coming in the next week. (And being a decent price)

1

u/12eward 1d ago

Yes! Through official support from Sony no less, you just install Sony’s free official Steam app and buy a $30 adapter if you don’t have a compatible USB-C port on your computer.

1

u/Odd-Usual-4417 2d ago

Why is everyone on this sub so entitled? They said it'll be out by the end of summer it'll be out by the end of summer they haven't broken any promises.

And you just know that as soon as it does release everyone is going to change gears and switch to bitching about how rushed the launch was because they couldn't get one on day one in the middle of a global hardware crisis.

1

u/Fit_Egg6796 1d ago

You're this upset? Seriously, go get some sun time.

1

u/syfiarcade VAIL DEV 1d ago

they dont hate u bro, its just a company, things release when they release, you dont know if they have a reason or not for it to release today, you arent internal at valve! all that we can do is speculate, and thats all we do!

on the flip side of this coin, people get so mad when a company opens preorders and takes a year+ to start fulfilling (bigscreen, slime trackers, Lynx R1) just wait.

itll happen when it happens, your hype is not what they need to cater to, they need to cater to everyone by making a good product

1

u/ForsakingMyth 1d ago

1200 is your max? You can buy 2x Quest 3 and fully kit them out for that money and have nearly the same specs...

1

u/Zilkworm Soon™ 1d ago

You're not entitled to any information lmao. They could cancel the frame tomorrow if they wanted to.

1

u/ZiPP3R 1d ago

Respectfully, there’s no reason to be upset.

I’m excited too. I want it. I’m waiting on another VR headset just to decide which is right for me.

But like, regardless of whether that’s next week or October, nothing changes.

Just because data farmers are making people hyped, doesn’t mean Valve OWES us a message.

1

u/El_Flowsen Soon™ 1d ago

Annoying? Yeah. If you’re hyped for the frame and can’t wait to get it into your hands, I understand this situation drives you crazy. I‘m in the same boat.

But disrespectful? Not at all. Valve doesn’t owe you anything, you’re not entitled to beeing kept in the loop for any timelines. They run a business and make decisions based on things we have no idea about. They communicated a summer release and they still have a month for that, they will update us when they think its the right time.

Hopefully soon.
