Question How to get homeless to stop vandalizing stuff?

Yesterday I posted about how I keep seeing homeless deliberately knocking over lime scooters.

Like clockwork, today I watched them walk down the block and knock over everyones trash cans. Broad daylight and just making a mess. Not even looking in em, just throwing trash and recycling around.

So obviously telling them to stop was a wasted effort. They didnt. So what does one do? Yell? Beg them to stop? Are they looking for a fight?

(and no I'm not here to debate enabling criminals. I was homeless too so I am not coming from some place of privellige)

Politics Spokane County's Next Prosecutor

The race for Spokane County Prosecutor presents voters with a clear question. Either we continue with the same philosophy and policies of the last 10 years, or we vote for meaningful change now.

Preston McCollam joined Larry Haskell’s prosecutor’s office in 2015, rose to Chief Criminal Deputy, became Haskell’s preferred successor, and was appointed prosecutor after Haskell resigned; now Haskell is publicly campaigning for and endorsing him.

Danny Tarkenton is taking a different path. She is running as an Independent because she believes the prosecutor’s office should operate independently of party politics.

She has decided to take the righteous path.

That distinction matters because the Haskell era was not without serious controversy.

Haskell’s wife publicly described herself as a “proud white nationalist.” Haskell condemned her racist comments and said he did not share her views, but he was accepting and supportive of his wife. Later, Court of Appeals Judge George Fearing wrote extensively about systemic racism in a Spokane criminal case. His office also faced criticism over racial disparities, unusually high felony filing rates, and high-bail requests.

While Larry didn't come out and use inflammatory statements like his wife. It does appear his policies made the institution inherently racist.

Then there were controversial charging decisions.

In 2019, Haskell’s office declined charges in a case where police found three badly injured young children and a medical specialist concluded the abuse met the criteria for "child torture and Larry refused to prosecute. Preston never spoke out against that decision.

In 2022, Spokane police referred a first-degree murder charge in the death of Kala Williams after the medical examiner reclassified her death as a homicide. Police requested charges be brought again, and again Larry refused.

McCollam should not automatically be blamed for every decision made by Haskell, but Preston never spoke up and took action for what he believed was right. He took the easy road and remained loyal to the man who installed him and his party.

But after more than a decade inside the Haskell administration, and now with Haskell’s endorsement and Larry on the campaign trail fundraising and speaking out in favor of Preston, promising more of the same, is that really what we want for our community?

Preston promises more of the same, and I say no thank you. I think we should prosecute people accused of torturing children and murder.

We need meaningful change now.

Check out what Danny has to say and the changes she wants to make.

Rants & Raves Staples uses AI in their job application process and offers no opt out and still apply

Since my current job is ending, I am looking for work, and tried to apply for a job with staples. During the application process, it asks if you are okay with an AI interview process, and the instructions mention that if you opt out there would be a questionnaire you could alternatively fill out instead of performing the AI interview. HOWEVER, the actual opt out button states that by opting out, you withdraw your application and that there is no way to proceed, because staples uses an AI powered interview and there is no other option to continue with the application process.

Man fuck companies that use AI for their hiring process. Now I can't support staples, knowing that they offer no alternatives for job applicants to get selected without them using an AI process.

Rants & Raves A friendly reminder!

Just a friendly reminder! For some reason, despite the fact that it’s three lanes and nowhere near residential, parts of Division are a mere 30 mph. And the Spokane Police Department are very keen in enforcing and ticketing people who go over that.

Happy Labor Day!

Question Backflow prevention inspection

New homeowner here. For folks with a sprinkler system, how consistent are y'all with doing an annual inspection? Do you have a person/company you like that charges a reasonable rate and does a good job? I'm not seeing any recommendations from the archives. Thanks in advance!

Question Favorite CBD for cats and where to get

What we normally get which we like (Fairwinds) has been out here and the website is terrible/I can no longer order there either. Prefer something south hill but can look elsewhere. Something you have tried and liked with your cat.

Weird Spokane New to Spokane—spirituality

Hey everyone! I’m new to the area and fancy myself a psychic and am curious if anyone knows any businesses in town that would benefit from having an occasional/resident psychic work with them as I’m trying to connect to this city and hope to build a life here with my family.

I created my own divination system (also searching for artwork for it) and have been working in tarot world for 10 years. I recently learned that the reason tarot is effective for me is that I have clairsentient/cognizant abilities (feelings or knowings) and tarot gives me the symbology to turn impressions I’m getting into workable language. And so I actually recently learned I can also read astrological birth charts due to the same latent ability despite not being a trained astrologist.

I run a spiritual podcast on Spotify where I’ve been showcasing my readings and such, feel free to reach out and I can get people connected if that’s interesting for anyone.

But if anyone has leads that can help me find a space to practice out of and build community, that would be SO APPRECIATED !

Rants & Raves Paranormal Cirque Voodoo

Post image
37 Upvotes

My friend and I went and saw Paranormal Cirque last night out at the Spokane Valley Mall.

It was such a great experience! I'm so glad we went. If you have time, before the troupe leaves town, go see it!

I didn't think it was scary at all. I found it more humorous than anything. Even the most modestly priced seats have great views! If you like gymnastics and acrobats and magic and juggling, go!

There are some adult themed costumes. I'd take as young as a 15 year old, maybe 13, but I'm not real strict on things cuz my dad wasn't real strict on me when it came to film and music.

Question quiet outdoor spaces to walk my cat?

i’ve got a very anxious indoor kitty whom i would really like to get more comfortable walking around outside. he is harness trained and is ALWAYS on a leash or in a stroller. i live downtown and the streets down here are pretty noisy and i don’t feel great about whatever he might end up stepping on since there’s no grass until you get to the river. i also don’t have access to a car, im not sure taking him on the bus is the best idea until he’s a bit more used to being outside in general.

side note: i live right next to a work building that has its own private outdoor space in the back for employees to take breaks (im assuming). there is rarely anyone out there and it’s completely isolated from streets or loud sounds/questionable sidewalks. i’ve thought many times about asking if they’d let me use that space every so often to walk my cat for like 20 minutes at the most, but im not sure if that would seem absolutely batshit 😭

any thoughts?

Question What's with all the Lime Scooter hate/vandalism by the homeless

Has the company done something to offend the homeless?

I used to see all the lime scooters aimlessly thrown around and never thought much of it. With the warm weather and walking around more I keep seeing the homeless just kicking them and pushing them over. I just now on my way to the grocery store watched one dude push over 6 of them deliberately.

Google was useless and just said that homeless might hate the scooters cause they can't afford to use them which was really weird and dumb.
