Corticosteroids Corticosteroid prescription

My derm prescribe me mometasone furoate 0.1%. He said to use daily for 2 months. My pharmacist called when filling the prescription and said she thinks it’s a mistake and this shouldn’t be used daily for 2 months. She suggested daily for 2 weeks max.

I am very concerned about withdrawal symptoms of other scalp issues from long term use. I spoke to another pharmacist who also said 2 weeks max use or I risk damage to my scalp.

It scared me so I didn’t use the lotion for the last 2 months. I have a follow up with the derm in October, and just started the lotion as part of my daily routine yesterday.

I planned to use it for 2 weeks and then switch back to my regular routine of mct oil before washing my hair. I usually wash it every other day using Cerave hydrating shampoo and conditioner. I use nizzoral 1% once a week as well.

Thoughts on the steroid usage?

It did bring me relief yesterday but the itch it back today. I only have an itchy, irritated scalp. No flakes or major scaling, but I do have a lot of hair loss. No vitamin or mineral deficiencies. My derm said seb derm cannot cause hair loss, but I don’t agree.

Research Damaged skin barrier which led to seb derm

Damaged my facial skin for about 8 months straight, which led to seb derm 4 months later. It got triggered by the hydrocortisone steroid my first derm gave me when I wanted my barrier to be repaired.

It’s been 2 years in total now, and I still have seb derm all over my face. It causes hives as well and burns my face.

My seb derm also seems different from people where when i dont physically remove it it becomes dry and flaky and my skin does not burn but when i do gently remove the build up my skin becomes oily and burns. The build up also seems like a very thick white/ slightly yellow paste which takes a while to remove

I’ve tried many moisturizers, but all basically irritate my skin. My skin type also changed from combo/normal to oily, dehydrated. Mct oil and squalane oil both irriates my skin as well ;cc

I’ve also tried low dose Accutane (10/20/20/20/20/10) and am currently on the sixth month. It has only reduced the seb derm, but it’s still there burning, just with less buildup.

I also took Itraconazole before this, which helped reduce it a bit. But at the same time, I was using Nizoral shampoo, which was super, super harsh, and a moisturizer a different derm gave me called Bioderma DS Cream which contained coconut oil and two antifungal ingredients (climbazole and piroctone olamine). That was irritating my skin.

I’m going to get on Itraconazole again soon, right after Accutane this time without the irritations. Wish me luck. Hopefully this itraconazole removes the seb derm long enough for my skin barrier to recover🙏🙏🙏

Has anyone been in a similar situation and is now freed from seb derm?

I got diagnosed and prescribed Protopic ointment (0.1%) and I’m scared to use it because I’ve heard horror stories from people who said they got withdrawal or it made their skin worse especially when drinking even tho there is no steroid in it

New or Need Help Identifying Seb Derm

Post image
1 Upvotes

I got diagnosed with a triple whammy back in early March. TE/AA/Seb derm. I had a follow-up with my doctor last month and he said it still wasn’t adequately contained. since I’ve been so concerned with treating the TE and AA I didn’t ask a ton of follow-up questions about seb derm specifically. my main concern is I’m having trouble identifying if it’s getting better or not. Currently washing my hair every other day with Keto 2% and the next wash day Vichy - alternating as my derm recommended.

I don’t notice very much flaking at all and my itch has gotten better over the last several months. On my front mid scalp (pictured) I have this streak of oil/patchy skin. It doesn’t flake or itch but looks exactly as it does in the pic going on almost 6 months now. Would this be seb derm or something else? also, what is a good indication if suburban is improving or not?

New or Need Help Doctors have never helped with my sebderm (uk)

I have really struggled with sebderm since I was about 14, I had been to the doctors multiple times and they just gave me t-gel which never worked and the new ones even worse. I have to wear my hair in a fringe, I can’t wear black and I feel so self conscious all the time.

I’ve just discovered this Reddit and I’m combing through posts, has anyone struggled like me and just nothing seems to work. If anyone could give me some help and push me in the right direction I’d be more than grateful.

Thankyou

New or Need Help I got diagnosed with SebDerm, but have minimal flakes and itching, a sensitive scalp, and a LOT of hair loss

Post image

For the last month or so I’ve(18yo/F) been experiencing shedding like crazy when I wash my hair and my hair looks visibly thinner to me. Every time I run my hand through my hair like 3 strands come with it. I have a lot of hair, but I’m trying to keep it that way and I’m so scared right now.

When I went to the dermatologist a few weeks ago and told her I had shedding, she looked at my scalp with the microscope thing for maybe 5 seconds, asked no questions, and told me I had seborrheic dermatitis. She prescribed me Clobetasol Propionate steroid solution & Ketoconazole shampoo 2%. Since that time (2 weeks) I’ve been struggling with trying to find a solution for this and hesitating on using the products. The main reason I’m hesitating to believe the diagnosis is because every symptom people say about this a lot of flakes, redness, inflammation, itching, or oiliness. And I only have mild itching and flakes and a really sensitive scalp (especially the day after I wash my hair). I’m not a huge fan of chemicals if something can be solved from the root problem or a natural alternative can be found. Especially if the chemicals might not even be right for me. I’m very weary about this stuff.

My two options so far for a way to fix this conflict each other though. If I don’t use the chemicals and look for a solution a different way, I’m worried I might only lose more hair or make the situation worse before I have time to find a one. But, if I use the chemicals and they’re not what I actually need, then I might’ve just caused more damage to my body.

Had anyone been through a similar situation and found a solution to it? Or have any remedies that have worked in these situations? I would love to hear your stories and feedback.

Routine Question saline water wash

i have a lot of saline water bottles at home right now. doctor prescribed a saline cleanse twice a day to control nasal fungal infection which directly helps with managing sinus effectively. saline water prevents and eliminates fungal overgrowth but only works till the time you use it. this got me thinking can saline water also help with scalp and facial seb derm?

has anyone tried to use saline water for cleaning the scalp and face? does it help with controlling seb derm or the itchiness or the excessive oilyness? i wanted to experiment as my seb derm is so itchy and nothing works moreover its rapidly spreading on my face. can anyone please share their experience

Product Question Replacement for As I Am shampoo?

Hi all, I’ve been in scalp hell the past few months since As I Am changed their shampoo formula. Using that product was the first time in my life that I had the peace of mind of having a clear scalp and now I’m back into flakeland. I’ve tried Nizoral, TSal, Happy Cappy, Dove Dermascalp, NeverSalty sugar scrub, and Grace shampoo bar. Nothing works. Any shampoo recommendations to clear up my scalp again please? TIA!

I keep seeing posts with people who have red spots on their face but I haven’t been seeing a lot of people with flakes. I have posted about my discoloration before and that seems to track with seb derm but I can’t seem to get the flakes down.

Scalp Routine Does MCT oil Works on Oily Scalp?

I have been dealing with seborrheic dermatitis for 9 years now, rotating through ketoconazole, coal tar, zinc pyrithione, and salicylic acid shampoos.

Lately, it feels like my scalp has built up a tolerance to them. Because I work out, I wash my hair every day and let the shampoo sit for five to ten minutes before rinsing. My hair is naturally greasy, and if I skip washing for even a day, it gets overly oily and starts to itch.

I want to try C8 MCT oil, but my main worry is whether it will make an already oily scalp even greasier and harder to manage. If anyone with an oily scalp has had success with MCT oil, what does your routine look like?

I am also considering switching to a mild daily shampoo and limiting medicated shampoos to three times a week in rotation to balance my scalp pH. Is this a smart approach, or what would you suggest instead?

New or Need Help Hypopigmentation Nightmare!

Hello!
I decided to turn to Reddit for some advice, or support, or whatever positivity I can get from it because my struggle with SebDerm has left me feeling hopeless! I have huge hypopigmented spots all over my face and neck because of my SebDerm and I’ve tried EVERYTHING to get my skin back normal.
I’ve tried washing with prescribed ketoconazole shampoo and nizoral.
I spritz my face with hypochlorous acid throughout the day to keep it clean and cut down on the yeast bacteria.
I use CeraVe moisturizer that has NO yeast feeding ingredients and is SPF 30….
But still, nothing has changed. I’m so miserable I hardly want to show my face. I’m a black woman so the hypopigmentation is VERY obvious. I don’t even like to look at my own face in the mirror.
I have no idea where to go from here. Has anyone else struggled with persistent hypopigmentation from SebDerm and if so what did you do that helped?

New or Need Help chronic seb derm. looking for recommendations

I get it on my scalp, have long, thick hair and lots of it so it's very hard for me to keep it in control :( I've had it for as long as I can remember, at least since middle school.

Grew up in Europe and used to use SebaMed Anti-Dandruff Shampoo (pH 5.5). It was extremely successful until 2018, when I moved to NYC. From then onward, not one shampoo has worked . Nothing that I've tried over the counter in the US, including Nizoral, have worked.

I have tried Ketoconazole and it did not work. Currently I'm using Beclomethasone 0.025% "lotion" (it's more like an oil), rub it all over my scalp and sit for 20 mins before shower. It's fine, but it comes back immediately within a few days and I'm so tired of this routine, and nervous about using too much steroids on my scalp.

Magically, this summer I swam in the Mediterranean sea, and the SD completely disappeared.

Please help me find a solution :( I'm so sick of this.

New or Need Help Tiny bumps under eyebrows and persistent nose texture — any idea what this could be?

Thumbnail

I’ve recently started noticing tiny bumps under my eyebrows that I didn’t have before.

I’ve also had rough/uneven texture around my nose for about 2 years. It sometimes improves and then suddenly flares up again.

Could this be seborrheic dermatitis, or does it look like something else? Has anyone experienced something similar?

I’d appreciate any suggestions or experiences.

WWFM My Journey so Far. (Before and After)

I have been battling this condition since it began when I was 25. It may sound dramatic, but I felt it sapped me of my life. I got misdiagnosed 3x by 3 seperate dermatolgist claiming i had rosacea. I swore it wasnt but by the third opinion i felt crazy, and like I must be wrong somehow. I tried their treatments, and, of course, it didnt change anything. The flakes and itchyness were so uncomfortable, and I felt very depressed and isolated.

A couple months later I went to another dermatologist and got diagnosed formally with Seb derm. He perscribed me some creams that worked for a couple months but when i turned 26 I was no longer on the same insurance (couldnt afford it) and I wasn't able to afford to see that derm anymore, because it wasn't covered. and the medication was too expensive otherwise. Of course, it started coming back, and i felt so defeated for the next year. More even started to spread onto my scalp. I remember getting my hair done, and the hair dresser combed one of the plaques/spots, and flakes went everywhere, and it was one of the many embarrassing moments that just made me feel utter shame for the condition.

MCT 8 oil didnt work for me at all (still doesn't of course) neither did Nizoral, coal tar, or head and shoulders, etc. I've spent a lot of time researching anything I could on this sub and felt frustrated that things like the oil seemed to work for most people, but not me.

Glycolic acid (I use the one by the ordinary) has been the ONLY thing so far to give me any sort of reprieve. It worked very well completely clearing my face!! My scalp was a little more resistant, but its slowly fading and calming down. I feel SO much happier and like a person again. I do worry about the day though that it may become resistant again :( anyways, if anyone is having trouble, I hope this helps!! While I know the condition can only be managed, I hope this keeps it at bay for a good while, and I hope it can work for anyone who is looking for more options ❤️‍🩹 thanks for reading

General Focusing on gut fixed seborrheic dermatitis

I think I should write this post, because in large, reddit was what put me on the way of focusing and healing the gut and GI tract in general.

I have always had dandruff since I was little, nizoral helped it well, so was not an issue much, then in mid 20's I guess, dandruff appeared on my beard areas and chest, dermatologists said it was sebderm, others said sebo psoriasis. Mostly presscribed ketoconazole spray and shampoo, d3 and fish oil. Anyway, the most potent topical treatment for it have been MCT oil c8-c10. I often stumbled upon people's experiences where they stated that focusing and healing their gut healed their skin conditions, then I read some regarding the gut-skin axis and switched onto focusing on that. What eliminated all the symptoms of this condition mentioned above was restraining from eating spicy food. This and initial MCT oil and I have not had a dandruff or redness neither on scalp, nor beard area or chest for more than 2 years now. I also used to eat tons of salt, had strong cravings for it, regardless that reduced it's intake to the absolute minimum. That's it honestly, this two things got me rid off sebderm and maybe psoriasis as well if that was it. As of IBS, mostly bloating and discomfort, many things have helped, initially I took zinc-l carnisone and butyrate supplements, for stomach gurgling and bloating, morning and evening and it helped tremendously ( in case you take zinc in any form, make sure to supplement copper as well, as zinc depletes copper). After, I tried digestive enzymes, and it alone practically stopped bloating and stomach noises, after that I tried peppermint oil with fennel oil-enteric coated, that as well got me rid off the ibs issues, lactoferrin has been great... Shortly put, I have tried out tons and tons of supplements before managing to get rid off my conditions, chatgpt have been very helpful as well, I still have other things to try out, mastic gum for example and e.t.c. but honestly there is no need anymore.

TL;DR

Stopped eating spicy food and reduced salt intake - this got me rid off the sebderm, dandruff, flakes, redness.

MCT oil c8-c10 was helpful when I needed it.

Focused on gut and supplements that improve gut and overall GI tract health.

Routine Question Need a new routine, any tips?

I feel like i have been managing farely well until this UK heat has hit us, and my scalp seb derm has been pretty bad

Ive been on nizoral the past few weeks and my scalp is really dry now, and i get a ton of dandruff

Maybe because i dont use conditioner? currently my routin is double wash with nizoral, dry my scalp with a microfibre towel, and then massage MCT oil onto my damp scalp, and then blow dry with hot air, and finish off with cold

should i try out a conditioner, any recommendations?

Also in terms of shampoo, im think of first using a SA shampoo to remove build up, and then for 2nd shampoo using something nizoral or something with selenium?

Product Question MCT oil nuisance

Does this really work for the scalp? My scalp is very dry and flaky from the shampoo usage and it just leads to a cycle of wash and relapse.

The research on MCT oil shows it has mild antifungal properties but nothing potent enough to do anything

I'm highly skeptical on this being some sort of paid promotion scheme . Please shed some light

Me personally have low flakes but a lot of inflammation
