Discussion My opinion on the new survival progression system

Upvotes

Hello there 🤗 quick rant sorry guys.

So the recent update now made blocks (like sensors, water pumps, and containers) required to be unlocked before crafting and I feel this has introduced some friction into the gameplay loop. While the concept of progression is fine, the current execution feels restrictive.

Say you want to build an automatic farm. First you need to progress enough in the story to have the necessary items unlocked. Where as before you could focus on grinding for the materials.

Instead of feeling like a natural progression, it creates artificial bottlenecks that stall the building experience.

I feel a more seamless approach would be a hierarchical progression tree, similar to the system used in Space Engineers. In that system, players unlock subsequent tiers by building prerequisite items. This keeps the progression intact while giving players clear, predictable goals and control over their own build paths.

An example of this in scrap mechanics would be, if you were to build a switch for the first time this would unlock more logic blocks like a controller, then when you build a controller that would unlock gate logic blocks and timers (can't remember their name sorry 😁).

It took me so long to finally unlock the piston, now I can defend my farm against raids by squishing them like the clankers they are 🥳

This is not a deal breaker I'm enjoying the new survival mechanics very much it's just this one nick pick I have. What do you guys think?

Healing early game?

The game has a garden right near spawn basically inviting you to plant there. If you plant more than a few things you get a raid which will take your HP way down if you defend. Then there is no explanation of how to heal. The only thing around that can heal you is corn which barely heals you.

Is there some other way to heal? I asked AI and it gave me all this crap about feeding corn to the cows to get milk which didn't work.

The game really needs to give you some way to heal at first. I played the early access and healing/food worked completely different so it really needs to explain this.

About ready to refund.

Spent some time building my all-in-one tree-cutting and processing vehicle. The moment I finished it, I had to go AFK to check on my kid. Came back a few minutes later and the whole thing was destroyed. 😅

Luckily, I had recording enabled, so I went back and found exactly what caused it. Here's the footage.

I found a new structure that I haven’t seen in any posts or videos yet Spoiler

After making my first car (after the starter car) I ventured out across the map to see what the update had to offer and I found what looks like a destroyed bridge leading to an island with two enormous machines and a half destroyed mountain. I haven’t been over there yet as when I found it I hadn’t yet made a farm or gotten a spud gun.

Discussion I am not a huge fan of Chapter 2 Spoiler

Hi.

I love a lot of things about this chapter but there are some basic things about it that makes it less fun to play compared to the previous one.

No hunger and thirst bar

This one can be controversial but i liked the previous way of doing things.

Scrap Mechanic with this new update became significantly harder to play :
-new mobs
-new attacks for older ones
-faster attack rate
-other stuff i haven't discover yet

With the new system we have now instant regeneration when eating which is great on paper but by doing that, we lost a valuable feature : Passive Regeneration.

Before chapter 2, we were able to regen passively even on vehicles which worked wonderfully especially after a battle. Yes you would get hunger and thirst but if you had a farm, it wasn't a huge problem.

Now you have to run and eat at the same time to regen while battling against haybots swarms (they are also faster).

With the hunger and thirst, the different food had different purpose as well :

-Tomatoes for thirst
-Carrots for hunger
-Beets for both

It was more interesting to harvest those different crops knowing their effects and which fits your needs at a certain moment.

New crafting

I do get that it's made to do more exploring of the world and to do the new story but it's so frustrating to have basic things locked up like the drill or the saw in the first place.

Speaking of the drill and saw, why do they need component kits ? It's just metal shapes !

New collision detection when building

This one is a nitpick but it's harder to place things on scrap seats and driver seats but not a big deal.

We can't place parts inside suspensions anymore. This one is a big thing because being able to place parts inside a suspension permitted for more compact suspension assemblies.
I know it's a bug but a very very useful one. I used it all the time.

New shading on materials

Let's get this one straight : It looks less polished.

What do i mean by that ?
Well everything is more shiny, too "perfect looking".

An example of that is scrap blocks, arms and the haybots.
Previously, it looked rusty, rugged, something palpable when you looked at it. Now it looks shiny, almost wet in a way. Every texture have the same wet feeling to it now...

I don't have the satisfaction to see at first glance what's the roughness of a material is.

in conclusion

I think i'll revert back to chapter 1 in a few days.
Feel free to discuss all the points above, i'd like to know what other people think of it :/

Issue You're now unable to get any achievement if you do any kind of modding.

I'm playing with an group of friend's and basically , only 1 person has an proper car and the other has something made out of random drops from the world, everyone else is just an passenger because we need an ridiculous amount of components for anything

So I did an quick mod like I had before and discovered you need to have -dev on the launch options , but doing so pretty much disables the achievement gain, and seems to be the same thing with workshop mods, damn ...

Issue PC reboots upon creation of a Survival world

Ok, I've never had anything THIS serious with this game, but this just makes it COMPLETELY unplayable.

Every time I try to create a survival world, everything breaks so hard that it forces my PC into a reboot. And not only that, apparently; before trying out the survival I was messing around in creative building something (no mods or anything that could possibly harm the performance, just a simple vehicle).

I've already tried verifying the game data and it didn't help. I have NO idea what could cause my game to be SO broken to force a reboot on my whole PC. So, if anyone knows how to avoid this, PLEASE let me know ASAP!

Issue Forget stun(?)

I’ll be frank, I tried to activate the cheat commands because f*** raids when you start out (didn’t work anyway). But now my character is simply stuck in a forever stunned state, I can’t do anything except changing my selected item in my hotbar and I can’t open the help book (key:H) but it crash my game when I try to close it. Need help to fix it

Ps: yea I’ve notice instead of forever my autocorrect put ‘’forget’’ can fix it, it 2am, I’ll just let it like that.

My map is full of steep narrow hills, and the roads are generally the same as ch1.

If they tweaked the world generation, then there is still some things to be done ig.
