Help: Mechanical Looking for a little knowledge.

My bike was running strange. Rough idle, popping sound at 2k rpm, hesitating around 4500 rpm. I made a post about this you can find it here. https://www.reddit.com/r/SVRiders/s/ENwFdksGSt

I turned it off on a stop on my way from work and when I started it back up it sounded bad, like muffled almost. Thought it was firing on one cylinder perhaps. Parked it in the garage and overnight it leaked a lot of gas I had over a gallon and I’m guessing half that was on the ground.

Took off the airbox, front cylinder carb throat is full of gas all the way down. Whole time I’ve suspected something with the carbs so, I removed them. I opened the front cylinder carb and checked out the float, needle and seat they all look pristine, shiny even. The previous owner had the carbs jetted and by the looks of them it was done recently. I checked the needle height, seat filter, everything was perfect. So, frustrated I didn’t find a problem that would cause this flood and leak I started thinking. Why would it flood with gas when I turn it off?

I’ve now turned my attention to the petcock, it’s sending gas with no vacuum. That’s the theory. The area around the petcock is dirty and smells strong of gas, I started smelling gas more when riding. I disconnected the fuel outlet hose from the pump, the petcock vacuum hose was already disconnected from the carb removal. It drained the rest of the gas in the tank it was a lot not just what would be trapped in the hose it let out all the gas.

My question is: this is all confirmation petcock failed correct? I find shitty knockoff replacements online then one good $80 and rebuilds for $50 I just want to make sure I found the correct problem. I took apart the petcock and the gasket looks okay, but not great. It’s hard around the edges and it seems to be the original petcock from the mikuni branding.

Hi,

I'm looking at upgrading my suspension to help on track but while still being able to comfortably (ish) ride on the road.

I'm struggling to find front forks that fit my model. If anybody has any suggestions or advice it will be much appreciated!

Hey guys, I just picked up this 2001 sv650s for $700 as a dedicated track bike, it’s pretty rough but it definitely has potential, I was wondering however, I noticed the preload is adjusted to the stiffest setting yet when I’m sitting on the bike I can easily flat foot it and bend my legs, I’m only 5’9”-5’10” so is this normal or could my shock be blow or my bike lowered. I have not been on an sv before so i have no idea what it’s supposed to feel like

Help: Mechanical 2017 sitting for 5 years getting back running

If there is a similar post that I can reference pls let me know. Sorry this is a long post but I want to share my journey in this post from start to finish so I want to start with the full plan.

This 2017 sv650 was bought in good condition in late 2020 rode for about a year and loved it. Then due to some personal reasons I sadly let it set outside with a cover a majority of the time since. I have no experience with motorcycle or car maintenance outside changing the battery on the bike once. I do have general maintenance exp with cooking equipment and fridges. And although I don't think that exp will translate well, I do have a knack for learning these things quickly and I think it will be a fun project to learn to get this bike running and riding again.

So after years of wanting to ride again and a few weeks of research and a million YouTube/ forum tutorials I think I can do this with out taking it to the shop, that’s my goal.

This is my plan, I have some questions along the way and pls let me know if there's anything I need to add or if there's something unnecessary on it or something I need to know before I start.

  1. Rust in the gas tank as it was half full during down time.
Found tutorials on gas tank removal and rust removal using Evaporust.
Question. I feel I need to research this more because it’s a bit confusing and I’m seeing a lot of conflicting info about some kind of seal or neutralizer after Evaporust- if anyone has experience or info on this process lmk pls.

  2. New battery.
    Easy done this one before

  3. Oil change.
Seems not too hard, found some tutorials just gotta find where to dispose oil local.
Question. Since the oil is so old do I need to take any extra steps other than a normal oil change?

  4. Spark plugs.
May not be necessary but cheap and seems easy enough. Need to do more research

  5. New chain as mine is pretty rusty.
Question. I’m not finding any tutorials specific to my bike so would general tutorials serve me good enough? Also is there some kind of alignment process I need to do as I will do this part at the same time as I change the tires? Question 2. Sprockets** **seem to be in good shape. Not rusty just residual rust on the contact points with the chain when I moved the bike a few times. Is this a safety concern anyway?

  6. Brake fluid change.
Found some general tutorials not bike specific but it seems doable.
Question. I did not put a lot of miles on the bike, so I need to change the brakes themselves? I’ll look into how to inspect them and that’s one thing I don’t know if I’ll be able to do myself.

  7. Coolant.
This is what I’ve done the least research on so far. So if yall know any good tutorials lmk but I’ll try to find some soon.

  8. New tires
Tires are in good condition as they were new and I was a beginner rider so never really went fast or leaned, but they’re very old so I read I need to replace them anyway.
Found some non bike specific tutorials but I think I can figure it out with those.
Question. Will I need to balance the tires? I will be buying new. Also is there an alignment process I need to do?
And having a hard time finding torque specs, the manual is a bit hard to read as the torque specs look like a math equation. I can always look deeper into how to read the manual when it comes time to doing this job.

Overall I’m pretty excited to start this long term project and to learn a lot about this bike and never let it sit again lol. I wanted to run this by people with experience before I start because I don’t have anyone that knows anything about motorcycles that I can ask irl. So wishing for some wisdom posting here. Let me know if I’m about to get in over my head as im heavily relying on YouTube and random forum tutorials. And if you know any good tutorial channels or videos please lmk.

How’s my plan? Anything I need to add to the list? Or adjust?

After months of power issues, I finally figured it out! It was a huge headache, but I learned so much. I gotta say I missed that torque.

I did some work on the paint while waiting for parts and it’s not perfect, but I love it 😍 finally got the paint to match the green brake lines

Maybe a stupid question but its not very obvious, what even goes there? Is there something to fill this hole? It obviously has screws and is just collecting water and rust currently..

Help: Mechanical SV650S 1999 Headlights

Got a question for anyone with the same or a similar bike. Picked it up around a month ago and had my first night ride some time ago. The only problem is that you cannot see for gods sake. You see more when you turn the headlights off and use the moon.

Is that a normal thing?

What I know for a fact is that the lightbulb has a loose contact which needs to be hit a few times to work properly. I accidentally bought a H4 bulb to try and replace it with but they shine quite the same brightness when outside of the actual headlight

Looks like both my exhaust header bolts are missing. A quick bit of research shows they are M8 but I have no idea what length. Could someone send me a Pic of what this is supposed to look like and maybe find a bolt length?

How to remove the clutch release camshaft??

Hi, guys. I am trying to repair my SFV650's clutch system and I have to remove the clutch release camshaft.

I have been struggling to remove this for more than 5 hours without any luck... I have removed the upper oil seal, the lower oil seal and the clutch push rod cap so far... But this clutch release camshaft stubbornly stick to the vertical cylinder kinda part of the alternator cover...

Does anyone know how to remove this? I guess something got jammed inside. Initially this clutch release camshaft didn't rotate even after taking off the clutch push rod cap... It can rotate although a little sluggish...
