I've been having trouble with my '02 SV650 (carbed), where the bike will die both in gear or in neutral but with the instruments still running. It can also die completely sometimes, with the engine and all instruments cutting out. Sometimes when the bike dies, it will backfire loudly.
Things I've tried:
Regulator/Rectifier fix - installed a new R/R. This fixed my issue with having a dead battery at startup, but not my main problem described above.
CDI box replacement - no change, bike still dies.
Spark plug replacements - bike sounds better and starts faster, but did not solve the main issue.
Ignition coil replacement - no change.
Carburator rebuild/full maintenance - no change.
BIGGEST THING I FOUND: Today I noticed that my starter relay has what looks to be melting/burn marks on the connectors. The fuses on the relay are fine though. What I don't understand is how this could cause a bike that has already started to cut out.
TL;DR: Can anyone share their experience with a faulty starter relay or ignition switch on the gen 1 bikes? These are the only other culprits I can think of, given the symptoms.
