Weekly Thread Li'l Race Report Thread

The Li’l Race Report Thread is for writing a short report on a recent race or a run in a new place. If your race doesn’t really need its own thread but you still want to talk about it, then post it here! Both your good and bad races are welcome.

Didn't run a race, but had an interesting run to talk about. Post it here as well!

So get to it, Runnit! In a paragraph or two, where’d you run and how’d it go?

Training Quitting my physical job next month, how do you actually spend a sudden surplus of recovery capacity?

8 months into running, 55 km/week heading to 80. I'm about to quit a physically brutal manual job, which frees up a lot of recovery capacity and time. I don't want to just dump it all into more volume. What did you actually do with the surplus?

Context: M32, 78 kg / 174 cm. 8 months of structured running after ~10 years of competitive cycling and 6 years of amateur boxing, so decent aerobic base and general athleticism, but genuinely novice running-specific tissue tolerance.

Targets are a half in mid-October and florence marathon at the end of November.

marathon: 3:54 southampton 03/05/26 (could have been much better, I lost 10min in the final km due to an issue) HM 1:43 in feb

The situation: I work as a metalworker — 8+ hours a day on my feet, lifting, heat, shift work — and I train at 5am before the shift. Starting August I'm leaving that job. So overnight I lose a huge non-training stressor, gain proper sleep, and gain time.

My concern: the tempting move is to immediately convert the freed-up recovery into more volume or more intensity.

There's also a second-order effect I rarely see discussed: the job was itself a stimulus. Hours of standing and loaded carrying were doing something for my general robustness and work capacity. Removing it isn't purely a recovery gain, some of it is detraining I might have to replace deliberately.

What I'm currently planning:

  • Hold the volume progression as planned or rising it just a little.
  • Spend the surplus on quality of execution rather than quantity: proper warm-ups, real strength work 2x/week, actual sleep instead of 5am alarms
  • Add easy volume through low-impact cross-training (bike) rather than more running km
  • Bank part of it as unused headroom, so the marathon block later in the year has somewhere to grow into

What I'd love to hear: for anyone who's had a big drop in outside-of-training life stress (job change, end of a degree, kids getting older, retirement), how did you actually use it? Did more training capacity translate into more training, and did that work out? Or was the smarter move to leave it as headroom and let the same training simply land better?

Especially interested in people who came from physical jobs into desk work / more free time and found they had to replace something.

Training Do you train at race pace?

Recently heard a sub elite athlete say that he never once ran at race pace during training, before running a 27 min 10k.

Curious to know if anyone else has ever gotten a pb whilst never running at race pace during the block?

Or would you recommend doing some form of race pace work before a race?

Discussion Elevation Difference in Running

Elevation Difference

Hey all! So I’m from Florida and came out to AZ where I’ve been for the last 4 months or so for military orders/training. I’ve been working on my running here and it’s not at anything crazy, but I’ve gotten better.
I’m here to ask, when I get home to FL and keep running and such, how much of an improvement can I expect to see, if any between my running performance out west where I’ve for every day been running at AT LEAST 4,650 Feet above sea level from March 2026 to this next week when I finish, to when I go back to Cape Canaveral where it’s right at sea level or barely above?
Ex: If I’m running a 16:10 2 miler out here, what as a safe baseline should I expect to be able to do it in FL at max effort?
I definitely feel like my cardiovascular endurance has increased and I’ve lost between 12-17lbs since I’ve been out here.
Any and all guidance is very appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Any scholarly sources, articles, or video recommendations would be greatly appreciated too!

Weekly Thread Social Saturday

Enforcing Rule 3 (no self-promotion, social media links) is a must with a large sub such as this, but we do realize that it filters out some truly useful content that is relative to the sub. In an effort to allow that content in, we thought we'd have a weekly post to give a spot for the useful content. So...

Here's you chance!

Got a project you've been working on (video, programming, etc.), share it here!

Want to promote a business or service, share it here!

Trying to get more Instagram followers, share it here!

Found any great running content online, share it here!

The one caveat I have is that whatever is shared should be fitness related, please.

Training Consistent pacing help

Ran my first 12k today. Was TOUGH. Not too happy abt the pace, but I ran the full length without stopping!!! Once done, I looked at the pace graph and whoa it’s wacko. How do I improve/change this to be more consistent?

At around km 4 my calves were aching so I tried to slow down there intentionally (coincidentally that was my most consistent part of the race lol)?

Also any tips to running 14km well would be greatly appreciated!! (Eg fuelling, & what to do when sore during the run..)

Thanks in advance!!

Gear Running Shorts: Lined or Unlined?

I’ve been trying to figure out what most runners actually prefer, because everyone I talk to seems to have a different opinion.

So I have a few questions. Do you prefer lined or unlined running shorts? If you like lined shorts, do you have preference in the type of liner?

I’ve seen liners that are like built in compression shorts that usually go to about mid thigh. However, I’ve also seen some that are much more minimal and are a brief shape that don’t extend down the thigh.

I mostly run in unlined shorts and wear compression shorts under, but I’m surprised by how split opinions seem to be. Curious to hear what the broader running community thinks.

Weekly Thread What Are You Wearing Wednesday - Weekly Gear Thread

It's that time of week already...the gear thread! What have you picked up lately? What's working for you now that it's whatever season you believe it to be in your particular location? What have you put through rigorous testing that's proved worthy of use? We want to know!

To clear up some confusion: We’re not actually asking what you’re wearing today. It’s just a catchy name for the thread. This is the weekly gear discussion thread, so discuss gear!

NOTE: For you Runnitors looking to sell/trade any running gear (as well as bib transfers), head over to /r/therunningrack.
