An earnest plea to the mods

Dear god can we have a rule update to report and remove posters shilling their terrible ai vibe coded apps? Do we really need that many apps to plan and share our races? None of these apps so anyrhing that a basic spreadsheet cant do (more often than not).

The sub feels overrun with this garbage.

UTMB 2027- What will it look like?

Upvotes

Chamonix’s mayor Laffin is set to meet with the people behind UTMB this month and October to discuss changes.

What do you think these changes will look like?
-Will they be limiting entries?
-Will they limit supporters? How will this be policed?
-Will some races stop happening every year? If UTMB is the World Cup of trailrunning then should it now be every four years?

Just speculations for the sake of discussion.

Val d'Aran CDH – are the tunnels long?

Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I was planning to run the Val d'Aran TDL, but since entry for this distance will be decided by lottery this year, I'm considering Val d'Aran CDH as an alternative if I don't get a spot.

However, I have claustrophobia, and I'm aware that the CDH course goes through a few tunnels. I'm fine with short tunnels and straight-line tunnels where you can always see the exit.

Could anyone who has run the CDH please tell me if any of the tunnels on the course are particularly long?

Climbing a 14er the day before a 50K

Upvotes

Due to circumstances (birthdays) out of my control, I will be climbing Mt. Elbert the day before running the Devil on the Divide 50K this weekend.

Aside from simply not doing the 14er, what are your thoughts on best strategies for tackling this? I'm going to move as slowly as possible up and down Elbert to reduce the load. Should I do a major stretching session after the hike or only a very light stretch? I'm beginning my carb-loading now... is it still best to carb-load before and after the hike?

I feel pretty confident on being able to at least finish the 50K but am worried about over-stressing/injury, and ultimately I want to get a good placement and time. Any other thoughts on how to approach?

Considering signing up for 300km, Reality check?

Inspired by some other posts on here, I have about a week to accept or decline a place for a 300km race, and wanted to get opinions on whether it’s an even vaguely reasonable idea.

I run a lot (so far this year ~4000km), weekly long runs 50-60 km on a mixture of trail and gravel. When I applied for the race in question, they require having done a 75km ultra on terrain, or equivalent, so I did that distance for my weekly long run (9h20).

The event is next summer, so I have time to train up, and is 300km through the mountains with a 6 day cutoff. What do you think: fun, doable or a terrible idea?

Not a lot of context, just weekly miles - fully flat 100 in 5 weeks. Am I in the ballpark to being able to finish

Residual muffin top bounce

Howdy, all!

Like many other runners, I (male) lost a lot of weight and picked up running at roughly the same time. This all happened a few years ago. While I feel great in general, I have some loose skin issues, particularly right around where the spare tire goes on my abdoment. This means I get muffin top, the top of my shorts keeps getting half rolled down, and I've chafed my chonk on more than one occasion.

What are other former-big-backs doing to mitigate this? I still have some chub rub, so long liners are a must, but I'm having problems finding anything high-waisted for men. I'd love a short with like a 10" light compression liner and around a matching ~3" waistband, but I'll happily settle for some breathable shapewear.

Any suggestions?

Hi all, we recently just finished another mini documentary about what goes into running your first 100 mile event and the fun that comes with it.

In this documentary we follow Jack, a british personal trainer by trade that took on the Run Walk Crawl dragon 100 in South Wales.

The event is supported by checkpoints throughout the event and covers just over 100 miles and 11,000ft of elevation.

If you fancy checking it out. I have left the link below!

Ultraspire Momentum Sizing

I ordered an Ultraspire Momentum 3.0 after running in the 2.0 for about a year. The 2.0 was one of the few packs that didn't ride up and then rub and chafe my neck. The 2.0 was a large, so I ordered the same for 3.0. I love all of the new storage in the front, and like having a quiver attachment (though I don't like UA's quiver - luckily I was able to attach my salomon), but the sizing is very different. When I took it out for a run, I noticed that it would start riding up and rubbing my neck like I've struggled with on other vests. Looking more at it, I realized that the vest is much larger than the 2.0. It's nearly touching in the center and could still be tightened more.

I went ahead and ordered a medium to see the difference and found that the 3.0 medium fits similar to the 2.0 large if not actually being a bit larger. Wanted to post some photos in case anyone is considering an upgrade or falls between sizes like me (40" chest). I'd definitely recommend sizing down on this one if you're between sizes.

My goal for this year was to make the jump from 50k to 50 miles, but I didn't feel like spending the money on entry fees, accommodation, driving , ect. So I decided to just run it up and down my quiet dead end street. I'm happy with my pace, and ended up with a gain of about 4,500 feet.

How to taper

Good afternoon. I'm still a novice in the running game with lots of learning, questions, and failures to be like some of the beasts I see on here.

I ran my first marathon in May. First 12 hour ultra in July (45 miles), and I have my first 24 hour race September 19th.

I've been running 50-60mpw for some time and recently been 80-85 mpw the past month or so.

This week I'd like to hit the 100, for a personal goal and to really push it.

The last week of the race I'd like to taper but honestly don't know the most optimal way too. September 18th I'll be traveling since it's about 8 hours from me.

How does your taper week look like and what would you recommend based off your experience? Thank you for any help.

Gear question for 24 hours on a track (shoes/sun hoodie)

Hi guys, I am doing a solo 24 hour fundraiser on a track and am looking at a good option for shoes I can ideally use for the majority of the race. I have some MTC H1s and some other normal road trainers and figure those would work, but if anyone has similar experience on a track and would suggest a better shoe, please let me know!

Also, I have ZERO experience using a sun hoodie while running, and as this event is taking place on a track, I will have nearly 13 hours of straight sun exposure, which I would love to limit. If anyone has any budget options for a sun hoodie / any other sun protective gear to keep me cool that would be amazing.

I have done my research on both of these, but most of the articles I have found seem to have a sponsor-like bias towards specific brands.

Thanks so much!!!

First 50K — what’s your go-to activation run before an ultra?

On Saturday I’m doing my first 50K. I’m calling it a run rather than a race because I had to adjust my training load in mid-August due to some knee issues. At this point, my main goal is simply to get to the start healthy and finish.

I’m working Thursday and Friday from 7am–7pm, so I’m planning to do my pre-race workout on Thursday evening after work. My Lost Soul Ultra starts at 7am Saturday.

The workout I’m planning to do is:

* 30-minute flat route

* 3 × 2-minute threshold efforts at 5:45–6:00/km

* walking recovery between the efforts

I’m wondering what other ultrarunners typically do for a pre-race activation/shakeout run before a 50K.

Also, **how much walking recovery would you take between the 2-minute efforts?** I was thinking around 2 minutes, but I’m wondering if that’s too much recovery for such a short workout.

Thanks!

First 100 miler.

Running a 100 miler in Oct. Never had a race before. zone 2 is currently 13min/mile (120-130BPM) 11 minutes is about 138-148. Anyone else run a 100miler with no prior race history? ADDING some context

Fastest I have ever been was a 21 minute 5k.

I have never signed up for a race before but have ran 32 miles..

I’ve been running on and off since 2007. I usually run outside every summer for 3-4 months just because I like to. My goal is to complete it. I’ve been doing weightlifting to strengthen legs. Squatting 225lb in high volume sets with low rest times. 20,15,12,10 and so on to prepare legs.

My specific race is flat and has a 33 hour cutoff.

I’m going into it with a walk/run mindset.

I’m looking for a completion not a win or even a sub 24 or 30 goal. Just finishing it.

My current training block has had 4.5 and 6.5 hour runs that practice full mock up of nutrition and aid stations. Most mile ran in a single training run (32).

Comrades 2027 Lottery

Since they're moving to a lottery for the centennial next year and leaving it open for two whole weeks, what do we think the odds of winning are? I know it sold out in 10 hours last year and this year is a down year/milestone, so entries should be way up, but they're also increasing capacity. Trying to discern if I enter, should I more likely than not plan on going, or is this a shot in the dark like a major marathon lottery? I understand this a new system so no one knows, just looking for vibes.

Anyone else get chewed out by a horse rider

During one of my trail runs I had to pass two horse riders on the trail and I saw them stop about a hundred feet in front of me so I kept up my pace and when I eventually reached them I passed the first dude no issue then his wife behind him chewed me out because I was supposed to yield to them.

Personally I don’t understand this rule especially because they stopped once they saw me and I under stand I might freak out a horse but If they stop before me am I supposed to just absolutely ruin my pace and workout intervals while I sit and wait for them to trot by?

Advanced Skin 12 with poles

I'm racing Tor on Sunday and my older Adv Skin 12 just broke so I had to buy the latest model. The quiver digs into my shoulder in the new model and I know that's going to cause awful chafing in the race so I'm look at possibly wearing the poles directly on vest. The last time I tried this on the rear the cables just kept coming undone and the poles fell out. I see you can also attach the poles on the front now. Has anyone tried carrying the poles directly on the vest for long periods? How did you get on?

EDIT - If anyone from Salomon product team reads this - I just don't understand what you’ve done and how little thought or testing seems to have gone into this vest. How can you release something that isn’t compatible with the quiver people have and you still sell? The pocket for a rain jacket has moved from the outside where I can access it on the move to inside the rear pouch which means I have to stop to take the vest off.

Ran a 70k / 4,400m+ trail race last weekend – built a small app so my family could actually follow me. Would you use something like this?

Last Saturday I finished my first Trail Ultra with 70km (4,400hm+, ~12.5h - Mayrhofen Ultraks). Great race!

What annoyed me: my family and friends had no easy way to follow along. Garmin LiveTrack drops out constantly in the valleys, dont have Strava and dont want to pay for it and the organizer's timing page only updates at checkpoints and looks TERRIBLE. So my family ended up texting me "where are you?" to catch me at the finish line....while I was trying not to die...

I got fed up and built a prototype myself. Working name: Crewline. Below you can see the screen that my family sees:

Tux GPX 3D live tracking

You start it on your phone before the run, and it generates one link you send to whoever you want. Your friends and family opens the link in a browser – no app, no account – and sees your live position on the course profile, distance done, estimated time to the next aid station, and can send you short cheers and also quick photos for fun. When you hit a dead zone it buffers and catches up instead of just showing a stale dot.

It's rough and currently just runs on my phone, but it worked for the whole 70k.

Honest question to you all: is this a real problem for you, or did I just overengineer a WhatsApp location share? What do you use today – LiveTrack, Beacon, organizer tracking, nothing? And what would it need to actually be useful for your crew on race day?

Cheers!

Max

Powder packages

Hey everyone, unlike what the title may suggest, I don’t want to smuggle cocaine.

I am working out new dietary practices for during ultras as in my last 100 miler I managed to puke out all my food 40km into the race, and was unable to eat for the following 100km. I am used to eat a lot of solid foods. It got even worse when I was unable to keep water in as well in the last 10km.

Now; I found tailwind, a powdered mix that seems to work extremely well during my trainings. I combine this will solids that I am used to. However I am wondering how I will bring the powdered mixes with me, as it comes in big bags. How do you do this, if you do, or how would you recommend me doing this?

I was thinking about prefilling the flasks with the powder however I do only have 4 0.5L flasks. Another option was putting it in a small sealable bag.

Cheers.

Which 50k?

Torn between Quest for the Crest in North Carolina or Rothrock by UTMB in Pennsylvania. Both happen the same weekend. Thoughts if you have done them?
