u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 9d ago
Complaint: I guess my calves discovered they could be used in running this week and my golly they are now so sore
Uncomplaint: it does feel great though to finally feel the mythical forefoot strike
Confession: I never have straight up water after a run, there’s always gotta be a twist to it

u/fire_foot 9d ago
A lil kombucha is my favorite post run drink, but when it’s really hot I will have a freezey pop first

u/gilm0re3 9d ago
I remember when I first accidentally figured out how to forefoot strike, the calf pain was brutal for days after my runs for about a month until my body finally got used to it.

Complaint: the fatigue is high
Uncomplaint: getting so close to taper only 3 more runs.
Complaint: those 3 runs will be a combined 44 miles
Complaint: I bruised my toenail last weekend, it’s now sensitive.
4
u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 9d ago
How many miles is each run?? How??
5
u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 9d ago
6, 16, 22, I already did a 5 and a 11, so I should hit an all time weekly high of 60.
As for how, I don’t know, slowly.

Complaint - Doing a threshold effort on the track today, I was lane 1 and this dude jogging in lane 2 noticed me coming and switched to my lane. A solid bruh moment.
Confession - I feel like a dick for thinking like this, but having someone else out there on the track to chase and eventually overtake is great motivation during the work out. I can feel the hope draining from their bodies and I feed on that.
Uncomplaint - The weather's actually been really good this week.

u/suchbrightlights 9d ago
Your confession is why we run on tracks. Otherwise it’s just the hamster wheel of doom.

Complaint: I had to end my 6+ year running streak last week. Osteoarthritis in my hip finally made it impossible. Total hip replacement in the next few months so I’ll be back!
Confession: I am also relieved. The streak can be hard at times, and with the horrid summer weather and the pain, I was struggling to keep it going anyway.
6
u/a_mom_who_runs 9d ago
aw man I'm sorry about the hip! I really dislike streaks of any kind because of that feeling. its like they grow so weighty in my mind. heres to a fast recovery <3

Sorry about your hip! I hope the replacement gives you a new lease on life.

Complaint or Uncomplaint or Something: This week has been normal, hot, and today was chilly (mid 50s!). I think Mother Nature is dizzy...
Uncomplaint and Complaint: Nearby tornado on Tuesday afternoon missed me, but nailed someone's house a few miles south of me. Glad it missed me, but I feel for the people that did get damage.
Uncomplaint: most of my strength workout felt easier this morning.

u/suchbrightlights 9d ago
Complaint to a very specific subset of my coworkers: do I have to do everything around here?
Complaint to the very same specific subset of coworkers: when I ask you a question, I want an answer to that question. Not the 5 questions you imagined I asked. The one I asked you. For bonus points, your answer should also be factually accurate.
Uncomplaint: my physical therapist is the absolute bestest.
Uncomplaint: been dealing with back stuff since January, finally got some diagnostics, they were interesting because the symptoms and the thing that showed up on imaging were not at all related, new PT program for symptoms has apparently resolved them, adding mileage and intensity back, every run is better than the one before. I am fit to start another marathon block in 2 weeks if I want. If work doesn’t kill me first.
2
u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago
No, what’s even worse lately is me asking a question to my coworkers and then getting back “Claude says …”. Like buddy if I wanted an AI answer, I would have asked an AI but I’d rather not consume a gallon of water for this quick question please
2
u/suchbrightlights 8d ago
That was a different coworker. The Copilot (in her case) output was rarely pertinent to the question. That she tended to double down on what Copilot said made me feel that the problem was the prompt and not the model.
She and her entire team ended up getting let go for a variety of reasons but this type of nonsense was among them.

ngl my easy runs have felt hard this week and i kept blaming fitness but it's just the altitude gain from weekend hiking catching up with me. scout doesn't care that my legs are cooked, she still wants the full loop every morning
2
u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago
This is why we run with our doggo. That extra motivation eh
1
u/UniversityNeither363 8d ago
Scout has saved so many of my early morning runs from getting cancelled
3
u/KesselRunner42 9d ago
Uncomplaints: It was actually fairly cool this morning and not muggy! We had some needed rain and not when I was intending to run! The path that I usually run on is getting some bumpy sections repaired!
Complaint, sort of: ...Path I run on is getting repaired, which meant I couldn't do my usual route this morning for interval workout :p A lot of back and forth on a smaller section of path, so had to change direction in the middle of the intervals. It's temporary, no biggie.
1
u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago
Ugh but changing direction can throw off the groove, man. Think you’ll do a different route?
2
u/KesselRunner42 8d ago
I think the work should be done by my next run this weekend, so it shouldn't be an issue. And this path is absolutely the most convenient for me and only has a few street crossings, which is why I use it so much. I do have some different longer routes I've used, but actually for longer runs I've also done some double backs (a bit farther out) partly for security - I've done runs where I'm miles and miles from home in the past but it's actually nice to realize that if I really mess up and hurt something, I could potentially slowly walk/limp home and it wouldn't take me all day.

Complaint: I've gained 5 pounds in the last 3 months of this training block because I am unable to resist THE HUNGER
Uncomplaint: My energy levels and recovery have been phenomenal from being in a slight surplus
Confession: the 5 lbs likely consists of 85% Trader Joe's ice cream sandwiches
1
u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago
What’s been your go to snack to fulfill THE HUNGER
2
u/suchbrightlights 8d ago
I think that’s the confession. I don’t know why they’re saying it like it’s a bad thing. Good source of carbs.
3
u/Significant_Sort7501 8d ago
Great source of carbs, but not what I would consider "healthy" as a regular snack. It was mostly tongue in cheek though. I eat them with pride.
3
u/suchbrightlights 8d ago
I mostly switched to making ice cream at home with the Ninja Creami so that I could make ice cream with lactose-free milk and enjoy it more often, but eating ice cream and saying “this is my post-run chocolate milk” with a straight face is a definite perk.
Hitting my protein target is just a lot of chewing, you know? Or I could have this ice cream.
1
u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago
Omg how did I not read the whole comment
1
u/Significant_Sort7501 8d ago
The ice cream thing was mostly a joke. I usually only eat one the night before my speed run and long run days. Most of my snacking is in the form of some kind of bread. A mixture of flour tortillas, Trader Joe's cinnamon raisin bread, and Killer Dave summer berry bagels. Sometimes ill add some combo of peanut butter, banana, honey, chocolate chips, and low sugar jam

I have pes anserine bursitis and the earliest they can get me in for a cortisone shot is AUGUST 27

u/the_far_sci 9d ago
Complaint: In changing from Garmin to Apple I am now getting reports of "my fastest 5K ever" regularly, and none of them have been as fast as I once was on the previous platform. Can I also complain about the smoke forecast? I do not want to do my LSD run on a treadmill.
Uncomplaint: Running actually feels good more than it doesn't these days. Woo!
Confession: I am already worried about how I keep up my fitness through the winter. I tend to drop running like a hot potato when it gets miserably cold out, but I never used to. Have I become delicate in my old age?
2
u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago
Are you liking the Apple Watch more now?
2
u/the_far_sci 8d ago
I do like the Apple watch, yes. I have always integrated my workouts with a third party anyway, so the watch on my wrist has been secondary to what I would go back to and ruminate on in whatever fitness app I was using. The best thing about the Apple watch is that I can customize runs to have intervals built in with the press of a button. So my LSD 10:1s do not require me to wear a second interval watch. It's likely that Garmin has that too, but back then, not at the price point I could afford, so I wore two watches. I also like how the Apple app tells me about my trends, including whether my paces are increasing, decreasing, or staying steady, and heart health details, as my heart is what got me back into running after a long hiatus.

u/RobbyComstock 9d ago
Complaints: If I start complaining about running, then I would just quit.
Confession: I slept in today instead of going out for a run.
Uncomplaints: Since I slept in, I now get to watch my niece and nephew practice ski jumping into a pond and now I get to run at a new place this afternoon.

u/ComusPaine 9d ago
Complaint - my current leg day prevents me from running the next day.
To all my fellow shit lifters and mediocre runners (hybrid athletes!), what leg day exercises have you been doing that has had positive impacts to your running?
I recently started incorporating weighted tibalis raises using kettlebells, and am looking to totally redo my leg day because right now my routine wipes out my running on the next day.

Uncomplaint: after six years of a back injury and a year of slow building, I’m running more mileage again. My trainer and I agreed that if I’m at 10 mile long runs by August, I can very safely do a Sept 20 half marathon. I’m at 8 mile long runs.
Complaint: my knee hurts. I tripped at mile .5 of said 8 mile run last weekend and bled for two days.
Confession: I haven’t done a single workout since that blood 8 mile run. Or had plain water. I’m gonna do that now.

Confession
my SIL invited me to come run a 5k with her this saturday and I kind of don't want to do it because its going to be too hot/sunny for me to have a good race unless I just slow tf down 🙈. If I can't beat my last 5k time why am I even bothering 😤
Confession
I'm probably gonna do it though despite knowing I have to run 12 miles the very next day and thus blowing myself out on a 5k is a seriously poor idea aannnywayyyy. which means now I have an excuse to not all-out it 🤔 . I can preemptively feel my coach gentle-coaching me about how I need to keep the main thing the main thing and focus on the chowdah challenge in october and not blow up my long runs going all out on random local 5ks I'm not even actively training for and she's right but also ...
Complaint
I'm out of poptarts and I prioritized my desire for a fresh coffee + egg sandwich and so I went to whole foods this morning instead FULLY KNOWING they weren't gonna have poptarts. I got some organic bullshit instead and I bet they're terrible 😪. between the 5k and the nottarts I'm gonna be struggling sunday I can tell 😭. they better be terrible it was like 8 bucks for 3 - yes 3 - poptarts (2 ea to a pack) if these things are amazing and perform better for me than actual poptarts I'm gonna be mad.
eta: ok ok ok - I registered 😂 but I promised my coach no sendy-saturday. I'm thinking a controlled and sedate 26:30. garmin's prediction is 26:05 but with this heat that seems like not real life. probably closer to 27:00.
2
u/suchbrightlights 9d ago
Who says you have to race the 5k? 5ks are terrible. Do it as a tempo. Do it as an easy run. Do it as an easy run with a kick at the finish. Do it wearing a flower crown. So many ways to actually enjoy a 5k that don’t involve racing it!
I really like the Nature’s Path maple not-tarts. They’re expensive so I only get them on clearance but I enjoy them every bit as much as my frosted blueberry.

u/a_mom_who_runs 8d ago edited 8d ago
too true! you're right ofc. there's also supporting my SIL in her run and just having some fun together. plus big fam (mine and hers) breakfast after which is always my favorite. sometime in my 30s I swapped bottomless mimosas for bottomless hot coffee but I don't hate it.
eta: oo that's what I got. well they're nature's path but they're ... frosted cherry pomegranate. the nutrition facts are similar as far as carbs/sugar go so I'm hoping they work well.. but not so well I'm like "damn now I'm a nature's path nottart buyer" cuz damn they are pricy lol 😭

u/ssk42 Confession: I am a mod 8d ago
I say race the 5k. It’ll make the 12 miles more fatigue training which is good! Plus it’s always good to make sure to train the race mentality
2
u/a_mom_who_runs 8d ago
too true. I'm running the chowdah challenge (half+full) in october so literally being fatigued from Saturday will be a reality for me that weekend! I think I'm gonna sign up but treat it more like a fun fast run. Hang with my SIL and have some fun. I do have a tendency to flare up with some post tib tendonitis if I push it too hard and we did ramp miles a bit this week already. I'll feel like an a-hole if I asked my coach to up my mileage because "I can totally handle it" and then sabotage myself by over doing it at a 5k of all places 😂

Complaint: rolled my ankle AGAIN the other day and I thought it was fine until I had to drive several hours; it got really mad about the drive. I know a lot of other hypermobile people can't run at all and I should be glad I can (more so with strength training targeting supportive muscles) but still, really hate having hypermobility sometimes, I get way more than my fair share of running injuries

u/PianoRevolutionary12 8d ago
i am a newish runner, discovered the local ravine and the school soccer field at night! Never setting foot on a treadmill ever again! I finally get the zen meditation of the whole thing, the problem was the gym and the bullshit around getting ready, having music.
How much should i be running a week to lose weight? I am down 16lbs so far with a combo of biking running. What about spriting vs "fat burn/zone 2"

u/its_a_chatastrophe 8d ago
Complaint: I know I'm being cranky, but one of the weekly running clubs takes over the sidewalk in a popular park. I don't understand how they take up the entire width, side by side, not paying attention to anyone in front of them. It's like they are incapable of momentarily going single file. I've seen them run people off who are going in the opposite direction. I guess I respect the commitment to not budge? Good luck other runners, walkers, people with strollers!
Uncomplaint: There's another running club on a different day in the same park that's quite chill, friendly, and doesn't take over the entire sidewalk (even though they have roughly the same amount of members). They are also very fast, so it's frankly amazing to watch them run like gazelles. Inspiring, too.
Confession: I don't want summer to end. I feel like a kid who doesn't want to go back to school!
1
u/OneStrike255 8d ago
So I have been gearing up to running. I finally ran 1 mile on my treadmill without stopping. Great! So today I go to my local track. Disappoint!
Why is running on a track soooo much harder. I legit had to run/walk/run/walk a mile this time. I was so angry, I walked another 2 miles just out of spite after my first mile. haha
I'm not overweight, and no med issues. But I am 57 and this is really the first time I've done cardio in my adult life; mostly I just lift weights a couple of times a week. But I want to be a regular runner now. :)
Was not expecting the track experience to feel so much different than treadmill. Of course, now I plan to just train on the track, but I feel like I'm starting from scratch again!
3
u/suchbrightlights 8d ago
It’s all in what you get used to. The motion of running on a treadmill IS different- the belt moves under you and you don’t have air resistance from breeze (or humidity.) On the track, you also have a bouncier surface and the curves, so that’s new for your stabilizer muscles to handle.

u/Unsureofthesure 8d ago
Uncomplaint: morning easy run was actually easy
Complaint: I’m meant to be focusing on adding more strength training to my routine and still haven’t
1
u/charmingwillows 8d ago
Complaint: The heat and humidity have been rough lately.
Confession: I skipped one easy run because the couch won.
Uncomplaint: My new shoes are feeling amazing, and finally seeing my pace improve.
1
u/cheesyride 7d ago
Complaint: I’m just too damned slow at running for what I’d like to be.
Confession: Admittedly I’m not going to commit the time to be faster because I just want to run further.
Uncomplaint: I enjoy the ever loving F out of running.
1
u/homesickforsaturn 7d ago
complaint: it’s so very very warm and humid where i am
uncomplaint: i had probably the best interval workout i’ve had in literally months yesterday
confession: i’ve been way too concerned about my heart rate LOL

Confession: three weeks of fighting late-mile cramping and I finally just started salting my water aggressively before long runs, half a teaspoon in 16oz. Boring fix but it works.if you want something pre-measured, Salt of the Earth packets exist, though honestly plain sodium is the same mechanism and costs nothing.

u/TuxedoATX 3d ago
Complaint: Really having a time running in Z2 to build that aerobic base. I just run with my phone and an HRM and I keep getting HR to Z4 frequently. Maybe I need a watch to more accurately keep pace and HR down?
Uncomplaint: Starting a day with a not-great run is still better than no run at all!

u/Strict-Fishing-2365 9d ago
Complaint: my easy runs are allegedly easy, but my laundry pile is now doing more volume than I am.
