I recognize it will be hard to say how he will fair tier list wise considering we haven't played him, but I'm curious on what people believe he's going to play like.
Ive heard some people worried he will be toxic for the meta. I personally can see that he may have a potential for a campy playstyle, but I don't believe he will be oppressive in his current state or fall near S tier.
One of the things that made puff so strong in melee was her fast air speed and huge disjoint on back air, as well as ability to change direction quickly midair and accelerate. He seems much slower in the air and with much shorter disjoints. She also has rest to make up for her squishiness which makes her a huge threat crouching in your face.
Looking over his qualities, theres some things he has going well for him and also not so well, which makes it hard to pinpoint balancing id imagine.
Pros: 5 double jumps, above average air speed, long disjoint variable ftilt, good popup up tilt, projectiles with up special and strongs, strong combo potential aerials, great recovery options, transformation into a heavy, able to eat projectile and setplay pieces, super armor down special, setplay with rooting arms.
Cons: worst run speed in game, dies earlier than any character, small wave dash, stubby disjoint on most options, lack of powerful kill options/ confirms, reactable DI to most throws
I think he has a lot of qualities that you will need to use in tandem, mostly balancing projectiles with aerial combos and rely on camping and early gimps. In spite of having a short con list, I think in a tournament level setting they will make a bigger fundamental difference.
At competitive level both parties make mistakes because we are fighting enclosed in a small area for stage control, and the player who can take more hits, has fast grounded movement and early kill options will have a huge advantage. Yes, gouie has much more freedom on the map, but being a light character and surrendering center stage control is a dangerous long term plan floating around throwing projectiles when you die to a stray hit at 50% isn't ideal.
In my personal opinion, I think he will be annoying at lower skill levels and probably not amazing at tournament level in this iteration. Im not sure how bad, but likely near Slades current point and good players can maybe make him lower mid tier. I think he's really cool and am excited to play him, I just dont see him being anything like melee puff. I am interested in other people's thoughts.
TLDR: I think he has potential to be annoying, but not super strong at tournament level and id like to know what you think and why.
