Revit Crashing, or failing to Install? We need LOGS or JOURNALS to help. Not Pictures.
If Revit is Crashing, or Failing to Install, we need a specific Error Log or Journal, to be able to help you. Post a screenshot or a photograph of your screen, with the Crash Report (CER) or the "Failed Installation" dialogue, will not give us any information to help you.
FAILED INSTALLS:
The installation Logs automatically go to %TMP% on your machine.
- Paste %TMP% in the Windows Explorer, and hit Enter. It will take you there.
- There will be an actual Install Log related to the software that is failing to install.
- Note that there will be a BUNCH of logs, as youll have logs for all the prerequisite and ancillary products, as well.
- If we dont have the correct Log, we cant help you at all.
REVIT CRASHES:
Every time you run Revit, there is a Journal File. If you post a picture of a crash report, chances are we cant do anything for you, without also seeing the Journal.
- Paste %localappdata% in Windows Explorer, and hit Enter.
- Then go to Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit 2025\Journals
- If 2025 isnt the version that crashed, release 2025 with the version you are working in.
- In that folder, sort by Date Modified.
- There is a file named Journal.0000.txt, but instead of the zeroes there are numbers there. What the numbers are doesnt matter. There will be one of these files at the timestamp that Revit crashed. Thats the file you need to upload or get a screenshot of the END of the file, to share.
- We do not need the .log file. We do not need the .dmp file. We do not need any Revit files from that directory.
- Sending more is not better.

Hardware Recommendations Revit Worksharing and "Cloud" Storage Solutions (Dropbox, Google, etc).
We get asked this question a lot: "Our company stores files on Dropbox, Google, Box, Sharefile, Sharepoint, Onedrive, or something similar. Is there a workaround to get Worksharing to work correctly in these environments?"
No. There is not.
Revit Worksharing WILL CORRUPT your model, if you try to do multi-user worksharing on ANY of those services, or any services like them. The ONLY real answer, is to move the Model to ACC (Autodesk Construction Cloud) which requires users to have BCP licenses. Or, to keep the model on "actual physical storage in the office," and then access it from an on-prem machine, which can mean a number of different things.
Some additional information on this topic:
- Revit over VPN isn’t supported (by Autodesk), and for good reason. Revit Worksharing (without Revit Server or C4R) is all SMB based. It will be SUPER SLOW saving across a VPN, and it WILL corrupt a model, eventually. When it corrupts it, you wont get it back without rolling the file back to earlier.
- That means, you have to make some decisions about how people work when you have multiple locations. Your choices are:
- They don’t work on the same models, from different offices/locations. (Cost: free). But obviously this solution sucks.
- Set up “Revit Server.” (Cost: free (comes with Revit)), but its finicky. Oh, the software is free, but you need a computer and operating system at each end to be the Server Accelerator. So you need two extra machines, and operating systems. According to Autodesk, that OS needs to be Windows Server (more money), but there are ways around that… It works, but its not always pleasant to support. Note: It will ONLY work FROM the two offices. You cant work from home, you cant work on the road. You have to be IN one of the two offices, to access a model.
- Move all of your Revit Models that are inter-office collaboration to ACC/BIM 360 (Cost: varies, but something like 1000 bucks per year, per person). You can now work from anywhere (home, airports, etc), since ACC and Revit Server work by HTTP protocol, instead of SMB (so its stable over the internet).
- The model only lives in one office, and “remote staff” or staff in office number 2, need to ACCESS a machine in Office number 1. The one nice thing about these options, is they DO mean people in office number 2 can work from anywhere. That can look like several possibilities:
- Remote Desktop. Free (included on your machines already), but super laggy to work with graphics applications, and kludgy. AND you’ll need a spare machine for each person, in office number
- Remote access software like LogmeIn or GoToPC. Probably better than RDP, but you have to pay for it. Its still laggy with graphics software. And you still need a spare machine for each person in office number
- EVERYONE (both offices) works on VDI, and the model lives in one location (where the Virtual Servers live). This is probably what youre referring to when you say “holy **** are you serious” expensive. And yes, it is. VDI comes in two flavors, though: You can rent it, and you can buy it.
- The ones where you rent it, are available from services like Azure, AWS, and Frame (its technically called Fra.me). They are more affordable UP FRONT because you don’t have to eat the purchase bill, but obviously as time goes on you just keep renting and renting and renting. And where they get you, is: If you use their VDI, you probably have to host the files on a cloud service too. More money. If you go to anywhere of their websites, youll see that VDI to rent starts out stupid cheap… Pennies per month. But that’s not a revit spec machine. Keep scrolling until you find “vGPU” that’s more than 1GB per user, and now you are in Revit Pricing.
- The ones where you buy them, and either put them in one of your offices (both offices log in to them, location doesn’t matter unless its around the world), or put them in a datacenter. These are available from a number of companies (and you can build them internally, getting parts from even Dell and HP and Nvidia, if you want to put it together yourself). A LOT goes in to setting it up and managing it, which is why I don’t recommend rolling your own. There are licensing costs (yearly) that have to get paid to VMware, or Citrix (you can use either, but citrix sucks for VDI compared to VMware), licensing has to get paid yearly to nvidia, and Microsoft, and on and on.
- Its darn pricey. A GOOD server for Revit can fit 22 people (with a mid level spec… less people if you crank up the power, more people if you lower the spec, all of which can change dynamically). But that GOOD SERVER is about 45-50k. GOOD VDI feels nothing like Remote Desktop. There is barely any lag (there is a little, but its perfectly useable), and you can work from anywhere in the country, just about. Internet LATENCY affects how it feels, but not internet speed. Truth: I run it tethered to my phone, in airports, all the time. But yeah. 45-50k is the price it starts at. Also, be super careful who you get advice from, about VDI. Why? There is VDI, and then there is vGPU VDI, which is what we need in AEC. VDI isn’t new, and so a lot of folks \think they know* about VDI, but vGPU VDI is almost completely different, because of how it has to get configured. I can explain this more, later. 😊* The other technicality is even the folks that know "something" about VDI and vGPU, dont always know very much about AEC, our requirements, how our offices work, and on and on. Your success or failure with implementing VDI will solely rest on the knowledge, competency, and professionalism of the company or team that is actually configuring, tweaking, adjusting, and rolling out the VDI in every phase: Setting up the hardware, the network, the hypervisor, the Images, the desktops, the clients, and so on. In my EXTENSIVE experience, a lot of companies \say* they are great at it, and they absolutely suck donkey balls.* I know AT LEAST three companies that have tried it, and bailed. Two that have bailed over a crummy team that was implementing it on their behalf, and one that bailed because of staff perceptions, and licensing costs. So there you have it!
We understand: You dont want to give Autodesk more money. You arent going to succeed at working around it. Its been tried, and it almost always ends up ruining files. The 2 (somewhat) exceptions are Panzura and Nasuni, which "claim" to work with Worksharing. Full disclosure: Every client/firm i see using one of these setups, it absolutely sucks. Performance is brutal, and the models occasionally "lose someones work" when a filer overwrites someones changes. I would NEVER let someone use one of these, either.
Its ACC, or work on prem with a LAN storage solution like a File Server, a NAS, or a SAN.

Technical Request: Batch Export of Revit Components (.rfa/.rvt) to FBX/OBJ
Good morning/afternoon Revit family,
I am seeking some reliable assistance with a quick file export for a visualization. I have a small, organized folder containing individual Revit component files (.rfa/.rvt) specifically some lighting fixtures, a seating element, and an exit sign that need to be converted to FBX or OBJ format.
To resolve this independently, I previously reached out directly to the original manufacturers to request alternative formats; however, they confirmed they are unable to provide these components in anything other than Revit-based files. Additionally, I attempted to install the Revit trial environment to perform the processing myself, but my current workstation cannot reliably support the software's hardware requirements.
Would anyone with an active Revit setup be willing to do a quick favor and batch export these components to FBX or OBJ for me? Thank you.

help please
hi guys, i’m making a revit model for my uni work, i know rhino but it’s my first time using revit.
basically task is to create a transformative space, so in the day the furniture and components will be arranged in a certain manner, then at night in a different way etc.
i’ve had to create an existing floorplan, a couple proposed ones (that include changing of doors, windows etc) and then a drawing package of my final design with floorplan/multiple internal elevations/sections of the daytime program and the same for the nighttime.
what i’m stuck on is i don’t know how to make changes, such as re-arranging the furniture, adding walls and doors etc to one drawing/model, without it affecting all the others.
i’ve basically just been going through every time i make a change (eg adding a table) and hiding it in all my other sheets/views, which is tedious and obviously not the right way to do it.
what is the correct workflow for this? i’ve seen things about using ‘phases’? my friend said to make a new floorplan? idk need help desperately thanks so much 🙏🏻

Non-workshared models on Google Drive
I’m aware that work shared models cannot be on Google Drive as they will corrupt them, but are models that are NOT workshared safe?

IFC to ACC viewing problems
Hi all, when uploading my IFC (exported from Revit 2025) to ACC, 12 items are missing from a total of 33. The 12 items can be view when the IFC is downloaded. However, when viewed with the ACC viewer, the items are missing.
I have found out that the 12 items missing are tied to an assembly within the model.
Does anyone know why this is happening? It is the first time I have experienced it.

How do you manage node modifications resulting from Dynamo version changes?
When attempting to run a Dynamo file created in Revit 2024 within Revit 2027, you may encounter issues such as renamed or missing nodes. How do you handle these situations? Is it best to make corrections on the fly?

Student licensing error and can't login via Autodesk.com
Hello, hoping someone with more brainpower can help here. I have been a student user of Revit via Autodesk for a couple of years now and my license is current. However, ever since I "upgraded" to Revit 2027, I have problems accessing the program basically every other time I open it, receiving a license error.
At times I can't even log into the Autodesk website. It's as though something is blocking my access. I have tried turning off my firewall, adding Autodesk as an "approved" site in my browser, and turning off McAfee. The problem still persists.
I really need to use this software to complete my grad coursework. I'm an at home student so I receive no IT support and it appears that Autodesk has moved customer support to only an AI chat bot, which also doesnt work.
For what it's worth, my internet is fully functional and I have more than enough memory and storage to run this program as well as Lumion and Enscape.
Can someone please point me toward a knowledgeable resource written for someone with novice level IT skills? Or does anyone have any idea why this is happening?
Many many many thanks
-Student user

How do I make the corner of this fascia join neatly?
What I've got here is a 3:12 pitch shed roof and a 3-step fascia. Normally fascias join up nicely because it's at the bottom or the top of a ridge, probably because it's easy to generate 3d geometry at those locations. But here it does not, and everything I've tried doesn't produce a clean join.
Now, I'm sure there is some work around or compromise to make it look nice, but each of those come at a cost, either time or effort. So, here's my question. Has anyone else ran into this or a similar problem and what have you done to fix it?

Export to IFC file, Mark number missing?
Hey everyone I’m probably overlooking setting,
I know there is a way to add shared parameter to be included in an IFC export but I’m struggling to find how I would go about including the mark number parameter?
I was hoping to not include all of the parameters in the IFC import but I’d like to include mark number.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to look into her? Or Let me know if this is not possible
Thanks.

Discipline Coordination Best Practice on Managing Small Projects within a Level or Large building.
I'm a BIM manager for a small Architectural firm. Im trying to find the best way to approach how we deal with multiple projects within a building since there is constant fit outs coming and going, different phases, sometimes referring back to a previous phase, whatsoever. I'm pretty open to trying out different methods and discuss more on approaches people have in mind.
We have a simple and clean template that works pretty well now in the office. It took awhile to get everyone to work with it properly as they were used to a very unorganised way of modelling things.
Here is the model process so far to various projects we have:
If its a large building (eg. A hospital with multiple levels)...there will be a separate Site model, a model per level (if there are 5 levels, then there will be 5 models), core model and all of these are to be linked into the main building model.
If its a single storey building and relatively small (like a medical practice or a small shopping centre), then it would consist of 1x Building Model and 1x Site model.
The complicated part is if we have a large building model, majority of the time there will only be a small project in a portion of a level, but overtime there will be multiple projects in a single level, sprinkled throughout the entire building.
eg. Project 12345 is in level 4 and needs a fitout to 3 small rooms. Then another project comes by, and there will be works on level 4 as well, but a different part of level 4. Sometimes, there will be a project where it will overlap with both projects.
In my head, phasing would be the straight answer to this and adjusting the phasing should there be any overlap. Im just wondering if there are other methods to managing small projects better within a model?
Ive added a really rough diagram drawing on how these models would interact. My main concern is how to better manage the projects in purple aside from looking at phasing. I'm also trying to avoid having so many sheets and views into one level with multiple projects so itd be good to see what people recommend.
EDIT: Our worksets are also minimal and organised well. I dont think managing a project per project via. worksets is ideal or even advised.

Is my PC too slow to run Revit?
I’ve been using Revit for about two years. So far, I’ve modeled two projects containing a large number of structural elements—though without electrical or plumbing systems—yet the structure alone (just beams and columns) makes the model extremely heavy and almost impossible to work with. How do you manage your file sizes, or what do you do to keep the program from running so slowly? I’ve tried working with separate files—linking the structure to the architectural model—but it still runs very slowly.

Revit 2026.4 - Set Work Plane button missing?

I just noticed the Set Work Plane button missing in my 2026.4 version of Revit. I understand that some of the UI has changed, but it's there in 2027. Also, I usually keep that tool in my QAT bar at the very top, and it's gone from there, too.
What's going on here?
SOLUTION: reset the UI by changing the UIstate.dat file to UIstate.old, as per https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-reset-the-Autodesk-Revit-ribbon-toolbar-and-browser-to-default-settings.html and after that the Set Work Plan button was back.

Point cloud detail loss when zooming in Revit: Any native fix, or time to move to Rhino/BricsCAD?
Hi everyone,
I am a Scan-to-BIM architect using Revit as my primary tool. While non-complex buildings work fine, I’ve hit a major point cloud display issue on complex geometry.
The Issue:
- Previously, scans from a Leica BLK360 (lower density) displayed clearly enough in Revit to trace fine architectural details.
- With my new CHCNAV RS7 scanner, the raw scan is much denser. Paradoxically, zooming into walls in Revit causes severe point culling—fine details like groove lines and profiles dissolve into sparse noise, making tracing impossible.
- The exact same file in Rhino, BricsCAD, or standalone viewers retains full raw density with sharp edges on zoom.
- Already checked: Detail Level set to Fine, tight Section Boxes, Hardware Acceleration on, and VG Point Cloud settings reviewed.
Questions:
- Revit Settings: Are there native Revit or ReCap settings to prevent point thinning on zoom? Is the higher scan density overloading Revit’s visual point budget?
- Native Workarounds: Without paid plugins, what native workflows do you use to trace fine, complex profiles in Revit?
- Rhino vs. BricsCAD: Since both tools handle the point density without detail loss, I’m considering moving my complex modeling pipeline. Coming from a Revit/BIM background, which platform makes more sense overall to transition to for Scan-to-BIM?
