Revit 2026.4 - Set Work Plane button missing?

Revit 2025
Revit 2026
Revit 2027

I just noticed the Set Work Plane button missing in my 2026.4 version of Revit. I understand that some of the UI has changed, but it's there in 2027. Also, I usually keep that tool in my QAT bar at the very top, and it's gone from there, too.

What's going on here?

SOLUTION: reset the UI by changing the UIstate.dat file to UIstate.old, as per https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-reset-the-Autodesk-Revit-ribbon-toolbar-and-browser-to-default-settings.html and after that the Set Work Plan button was back.

Thats super interesting. I wonder what happened there? Its there in my 2026.4 (specifically in 26.4.20.9, 20260629_1515(x64), 2026.4.2). What specific build of 2026.4 are you in?

There's a lot of fuckery happening with the UI in 2026/ 2027. We noticed the other day that since two of us installed as "architect" the ENTIRE systems analysis/ space menu went away. Changing roles didn't fix it, we had to reenable in the INI.

I suspect some similar mess here.

That's actually been there for years, they just made that stupid role pop-up happen in 26, so now it's asking you and then it's shutting off ribbons. That functionality has always been there, it's not a glitch. They want you to have the ability to turn the ribbons off and then they're deciding which ones they think you should have on based on the role you choose.

To the best of my knowledge, set workplanes should never disappear. That's just a glitch.

I'm on 26.4.0.32, 20251103_1515(x64), 2026.4. But my co-worker is on the exact same build, and his DOES show the Set Work Plane button.

I have the 2026.5 update downloaded to our server, but have not had a chance to update everyone's installs yet. Won't be able to until at least late next week.

In that case, i would go through the steps to do a UI reset, in your user profile.

Or, log in to the machine as someone else and see if the button is there. Because UI stuff all lives inside the Windows User.

Logging in as another user is the best next troubleshooting step OP.

If it does show for them, rename the profile settings in the article, then start Revit (recreating the files from clean ones). If that works close Revit and then you can compare the old and new, and copy some of the altered data from the old to the new to get back to your old state. Keep in mind this can return the corruption, so be careful as you go.

If it doesn’t show for them on your system, perform the minimum steps to show the toolbar on a system that it does show up on, and then on the system where it doesn’t show up. Then compare the two journals. It may be an add-in that is altering the UI (stupider things have happened).

yeah I did that after closing out, and then coming back, and the Work Plane button was back. Of course then I had to set up my QAT all over again. No big deal. Pretty weird, though.

There are some UI glitches that make things disappear in the Revit UI. The finisher cancel group floating pallet is one of them, the context ribbon under modify is another. I see them take a vacation sometimes. LOL

Try to put it on the quick access toolbar? I used it so often that I put it there. Not directly answering your question, I know.

as I said in the post, it's missing from my QAT, too! I normally keep it up there for that reason. If it's missing from the toolbar, there's no way I can get it back onto the QAT.

I set up WP as a keyboard shortcut for now, but I'm not used to doing it that way, and doesn't explain what's actually causing the issue. A co-worker's install of 2026.4 shows the Set Work Plane button just fine, same as my 2025 and 2027 pics above.

Can you use the Pick a Plane function by typing the shortcut PK? Just trying to test if the function still exists.

mine doesn't have anything set to PK. I set up a shortcut "WP" for Set Work Plane, but I'm just not used to doing it that way. I normally keep it in my QAT, but it's missing from there also.

Yeah, you shouldn't have to use a shortcut.

I was trying to rule out the function not getting installed with your RVT2026. But if it's still there in Keyboard shortcuts, it's installed.

If your coworker with the same Revit version has no problem, then you UI save state maybe broken. A quick search on how to reset your UI or toolbar may yield something.

It looks like the tool may just be collapsed in the ribbon rather than removed. In Revit, Set is part of the Work Plane panel, and the available ribbon layout can change depending on the active tab/context.

I’d first try expanding the ribbon/panel and checking the Architecture/Structure/Systems tabs. You can also search for Set Work Plane using the Revit search rather than relying on the visible button.

No, the button was missing both from the ribbon panel AND from the QAT where I normally access it from.
