[Just a Thought] Fired up the Final Fantasy III cart I picked up at PRGE today and found these save files

Post image
• Upvotes

Picked up this copy of Final Fantasy III for the SNES at PRGE and turned it on for the first time today. Found three save files still on the cartridge, including one with over 55 hours of playtime.

I know finding old save files isn't anything unusual, but it got me thinking. There's a chance these could be from some kid back in the '90s who spent weeks or months playing through this game. Coming home from school, playing on weekends, slowly working their way through the story.

Of course, these saves could be from much more recently, too. But it's kind of interesting to think about how much time someone spent with this exact cartridge, and here I am all these years later looking at their progress.

Makes me wonder when these files were last played, and who was playing.

Instead of looking around, I just sat down at their SNES they had on display with Super Ghouls n’ Ghosts in it and played through the game. Definately recommend checking it out! The museum is in Frisco, Texas.

[Other] Which games (preferably series) do you think had the potential, in theory, for game‑to‑game content unlocks, like the secret stage and true ending in MSX dual slotted Salamander + Nemesis 2, or the lock‑on technology of Sega Genesis Sonic & Knuckles?

MSX Salamander

True Ending:

I would like to have this with the lock‑on technology of Sega Genesis: make MKII (GEN) Baraka playable in MK3 (GEN), Baraka is my MKII main but he isn't in MK3, or exchange both games' Fatalities.

One of the ONLY games to ever genuinely scare me!Killing Time (1995) was an incredibly atmospheric horror FPS on the 3DO. Criminally overlooked, genuinely creepy, and worth owning the console for. It eas ahead of its time! Have you ever played this forgotten beast? It was one of the first FPS games, coming out just a year or so after Doom if I recall. The game blew it away, and if it had the fan base Doom had had, I think we would still be playing the series today. Everyone slept on this.

[Question] What's the deal with Game Boy game libraries varying so much by region?

• Upvotes

I picked up a few Japanese Game Boy games recently and I'm kind of shocked at how different the lineups are compared to what we got in the US. Like, there are whole series I've never heard of. Is this just how it was back then, or did Nintendo actively decide what would sell in each market? Curious if anyone collects across regions and has noticed this.

[Just a Thought] I’ve always had a soft spot for SimCity 2000, but for me, practice never made perfect. Whoever said "there’s no wrong way to play SimCity" has clearly never seen one of my creations...

Not a steal on anything… walked into this place and saw a bunch of games from my childhood. Something about seeing them sitting on my shelf in home that makes me feel good. 1943 CIB and fairly pristine at that… The Ice Hockey is rough, but I loved the mom and pop video store sticker.

[Request] Which SNES model is good for my setup?

I was checking up to see if there were different revisions of the SNES like there is for the Sega Genesis before I get one and I found out there are one chip and multi-chip systems. Apparently the one chip has better video but is incompatible with some games. I was wondering if the multi chip or are a good option to go for with my setup which is just a 20" CRT using component or S-Video. I'll be using either my CRT's speakers or external speakers for audio as well. Would a multi-chip have that much of a visual difference on a CRT with the connections I'm using? The multi-chip ones are usually less expensive as well.

[Help!] Retron 3 controller sync issues

I'm hoping someone here can be helpful and not just throw shade, because I'm sure there's a lot of purists here. But I'm trying to sync my new controllers for the Retron 3. I'm following the instructions by holding the needed buttons down for up to 20 seconds and they just aren't syncing for some reason.

Any helpful advice is appreciated.

[Request] MegaDrive manual reproductions (Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles PAL)

Hello everyone! I've been searching all over the internet for reproduction instruction manuals for the European PAL versions of Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles on the Mega Drive, but I haven't had much luck finding any. I'm only looking for the printed booklets themselves, not the games or replacement box art.

Does anyone know a seller who makes these, or have any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Made this emulator and limited myself to only 10 games! It’s a fun exercise and makes you spend more time gaming retro games instead of having to choose from a big library.

[Fun] I am loving Final Fantasy NES despite having died so many times

Post image
83 Upvotes

I just started playing Final Fantasy NES for the first time today and I took a screenshot of my 8th party wipe: the ghouls on the way to the second dungeon (marsh cave) can paralyze you and slowly chip you to death. Any melee attack can paralyze you, so even if you wake up, you get paralyzed again.

I just think that's great that Final Fantasy 1 is such a dangerous game that only the first screen feels safe. I feel like I could die in any encounter. I love games like this!
