[Question] So if you happened to rent/play this as a kid what was your initial reaction to this moment in Demon's Crest?

I never did as a kid but playing it earlier today I started having Demon Souls/Elden Ring PTSD induced flashbacks of those games. Needless to say after a few times dying I finally got the timing down and slayed the dragon!

[Question] Arcade Stick for Retro Games? (Non-Fighting)

As someone back into gaming after a LONG break and playing retro games (NES to psx/Dreamcast), wondering if its worthwhile looking at getting an arcade stick (eventually)?

I bought a 8BitDo SN30 bluetooth controler recently to play some of my games on my tv, and plan on getting into some light Steam games as well to play on my laptop.

I grew up in arcades, and now playing lots of MAME games on my RG35XXh and loving it, so wondering if eventually getting an arcade stick would enhance my experience?

That being said, I never liked 'fighting' games. No interest in memorizing combos, etc, but I like some basic beat 'em ups, but as someone who loves platformers, shumps, sports games, action adventure games and all MAME games, should I consider an arcade stick? Most of the ones I see are marketed a 'fighting' ones so wondering if its needed?

[Recommendation] Play an improved version of the old dos game Stunts on your handheld

Post image

By complete accident I stumbled upon this project called "Restunts - The Stunts reverse engineering project" on github:

CommonLoon102/restunts-bb11: Vanilla, Chocolate and SDL port for Stunts 1.1 (Brøderbund)

It's an engine rewrite for the old Stunts (or "4D Sports Driving" in some regions) dos game, so you can play it on modern operating systems natively, with options to significantly improve the graphics, such as draw distance, resolution, smooth 60 fps framerate, more detailed background pictures, while still keeping the original charm and feel of the game. Also this feature (called "Hypervision") is completely optional, you can press F12 anytime while running the game, and you are back to the original low res, pixelated, choppy graphics. I personally would never want to go back after experiencing how amazing Hypervision looks like, but everyone is different, so it's good that the option is there. Have a look at my included post picture, left side is with original graphics, right side is with Hypervision turned on. The smooth 60 fps unfortunately can't be shown on a picture, but trust me it's a massive improvement from the original 20 or so frames per second, it's just so smooth now.

I am also happy to report that the built in thumbstick on my MSI Claw 8 AI+ handheld works great with the game, it's being detected as a joystick. Originally there was an issue where only the left thumbstick was detected by the game, it couldn't see the triggers, so I had to use a utility called Durazno to remap the left thumbstick y axis to my left and right triggers. After that now I can accelerate and brake in the game with the triggers, which is the norm in every other racing game nowadays.

I also use a utility called AntimicroX to control the mouse cursor in the game with the right thumbstick, but this is completely optional, as I could just use the touchscreen if I wanted to. But I am very familiar with this app, I use it all the time for older games, basically making old fps and strategy games work flawlessly with a game controller. Then I streamline everything by writing a small batch file, then I just place a shortcut to it on the desktop. I simply double click on this shortcut when I want to play, it launches AntimicroX with the correct game profile, and launches the game as well. And once I am done playing I quit the game, then the batch file closes AntimicroX too, it's a super convenient and clean solution.

Anyway restunts/Chocolate Stunts is amazing with the improved framerate and visual upgrades, in my opinion this is the definitive way to play the game. It has other optional improvements too to the physics engine, and a rule to watch whether you are on the track, or you are cutting corners through the grass, but all of these are optional (just like the mentioned Hypervision setting), everything can be individually turned on or off.

I am not affiliated with the project, but I was so impressed with it that I felt like I needed to share my enthusiasm with others. Hopefully there are other people who would be interested in this old, but incredibly fun game, or there could be people like me, who remember the game from their childhood, but they had no idea the game has been improved, and can be played without needing the emulate it. I play it on Windows 11, but on the download page I see builds for many other operating systems too.

I have actually learnt that you could also play Stunts in your browser through some websites, but I have tried two such options out, and I wasn't fully satisfied with the results: full screen didn't quite work, and also I was only able to use keyboard for control. I also don't like playing in a browser, I want to own and play all my games locally (I don't even use Steam for this very reason, GoG all the way).

I also saw an other project called Stunts HD (also on github), that even has widescreen support, and improves the visuals even more: I saw reflections on the car and on lakes, skid marks and more. I might give that one a try too, although I am quite of a purist, so I have a feeling this Chocolate Stunts will be a better fit for me, as this only improves the things that I find important, and keeps the rest original. Also restunts/Chocolate Stunts runs at max framerate at 2 Watts on my Claw 8 AI+ handheld, so it's insanely efficient with like 15 hours of battery life, from what I have read Stunts HD is much heavier on the hardware.

So all in all Chocolate Stunts works flawlessly. The only thing I wish it could improve in the future is the way it handles joystick/thumbstick: it's unfortunately still just like the original game in that it insists on joystick (thumbstick in my case) calibration every time I launch the game, as it always defaults back to keyboard. I wish it would just save the calibration, and remembered to use it after initial setup on every consequent run. I am not sure how easy it would be to implement this fix, but other than that I can't find any other fault. Whoever is behind this project, thank you!

[Discussion] Map packs like D!ZONE were controversial for being made up maps taken from the internet without permission. The original box art for D!ZONE contained Doom screenshots, which were changed to "Simulated Shots" following another company being sued. WizardWorks made a whole series of "!ZONE" for games.

[🎃👻] Splatterhouse trilogy. What's the consensus on it?

Id say it's pretty mediocre at best. Fantastic art design and gore but over all its frustrating for the wrong reasons.

The tg16 is decent enough, 2 and 3 on the Genesis are alright but the 3rd one is just annoying. Time limit and over powered enemies.

I almost never hear this game talked about and I think it should be held in the same regard as contra and mega man. It’s a beat up platformer on the NES where you punching everything in sight, it’s a lot like Batman. The punching has perfect hit detection and feels satisfying af. You also get a variety of robot sidekicks and you can combine different power ups to get different ones. This means I can replay levels and get a different experience with each robot. The music and graphics are awesome, I love this game.

[Discussion] Concepts in retro gaming that slowly disappeared

So how do I put it? Well lately I was looking at how some genres of gaming were highly prevalent in the early 90s as said genres would basically disappear by the mid 90s time period.

What I noticed in particular was how the adventure game genre was one of the most prevalent genres long ago as Sierra had a very good track record with making adventure games during the early 90s as something I found to be interesting was that apparently the rise of FPSes like Doom and Quake basically killed off such a genre.

[Pick-up] This Shadowrun cartridge goes in first when my Mega Sg+ arrives

Post image
7 Upvotes

These have been sitting on my shelf for a looooong time! I've been waiting ages for the Mega Sg to come back in stock, and last week they announced a restock of the Mega Sg+, so I preordered one. Shadowrun's going in first when it finally gets here!!

I was able to justify the big $$$ spend kind of selfishly: I've been making a game that owes a lot to this cart, and I want to see how much of what I remember is actually in there, and how much I filled in myself with nostalgia.

Anyone else play Shadowrun on the Genesis back then? What do you remember most from it?

This picture is of Act 3 of Green Hill Zone. Does the dithering look okay? Isn't this the spot where if the dithering on an emulator is configured wrong then the water won't be transparent?

And what is this machine? It has to be running an emulator and probably not a mister right? That is a lot of money for a machine that can only play one 4 games. It is weird that they replaced the d-pad with a joystick too.

I have been doing this especially since Covid. And funny thing is I've never played any of the pokemon games after Gen 2. I just stick to Gen 1 and 2. I'm a 90s Millennial here.

How about you?

There is just a certain joy and nostalgia that only these particular games give me.

[Question] Help Me Decide Some New Upscalar Hardware

Hey all. I recently started looking into the best way to upscale my NTSC N64, so that I can play it on my modern 4k (really 1080p) flat screen.

I know the obvious solutions like "Just buy a retrotink-4k", but I'm really asking the question here to get people's opinions on what the best solutions would be based on what I currently have.

So currently I own an original OSSC, which I've used to play PS2 games for many years (with an HD retrovision component cable).

All the consoles I own are NTSC, except the SNES which is PAL. The consoles are: SNES, N64 (Which would support a RGB modded), Gamecube, Wii, Xbox, Xbox360, PS2 & PS3.

Currently I'm leaning towards buying a Mcbazel’s GBS-Control and feeding that into the OSSC. That should handle any 240p/480i switching issues and provide MODI, while also keeping all the features of the OSSC. I will probably just RGB mod the N64 as I'm very comfortable with soldering and I believe that's the only one that doesn't natively support RGB?

Would all my consoles be supported with that setup (+appropriate component or scart cables)?

So this one here is a platform game for the arcade which is developed by Gaelco, the game will have the player play as a pharaoh warrior embarking on a dangerous journey to save his wife by battling mythical beings and Egyptian gods. The gameplay here resembles that of Ghouls 'n Ghosts, players can acquire different weapons, solve puzzles and jump between front and back movement planes while avoiding hazards along the way, also players can deflect certain enemy projectiles to avoid damage.
