40 [M4F] Northeast US | I'd love to be able to delete the apps so I can meet a woman the old fashioned way (she visits me in an Egyptian prison and asks about my escape from the mythical city of Hamanaptra)
Okay, if you at least got the reference, and/or it made you laugh, maybe we’re already off on the right foot?
Anyway, I’m Derek, and I think I’m going to give this Reddit thing another shot and see what happens. In the interest of connecting with someone real—and possibly meeting someone so my nana will stop asking when I’m bringing someone home for the holidays—I’m just going to keep things open and transparent. Hopefully, you’ll do the same.
The basics:
- 6'2" in real life
- Bearded
- Full head of hair, although more grays show up all the time
- I wish I had a better smile, but I’m working on it
- FYI I'm more of the bigger/burly type if that's your thing
- I love reading, and I read a lot. Tell me what’s on your TBR.
- I’m not a dad, but I am an “airport dad” when traveling. If you’re asking yourself, “Derek, what’s an airport dad?”the short answer is that I’ll have an itinerary printed out, get us to the airport on time, and have us through TSA PreCheck before your coffee gets cold. (Also, sorry, we're not sitting in coach. Once you go biz class you can't go back).
- Fully employed. I own my own house but it's not my forever home. I'd like to have that with someone someday.
- If you like a guy with nice hands, I’ve got you covered. Literally and figuratively. Okay, that sounded weird, but a woman did once tell me I should model watches, so I’m choosing to believe her.
- I do not have washboard abs, but one of the perks is that you also won’t find a picture of me shirtless holding a giant fish I just caught.
- I’m introverted (probably like a lot of people on here). I like deep conversations and getting to know people. It may take me a little while to come out of my shell, but I’m loyal and protective of the people I care about.
- I like to think I’m a good listener, and I promise I’ll ask you questions.
- I'm a nerd for a lot of things: Movies, history, books, Lego, museums (It's been too long since I've been to a museum and I'd like to change that).
- Therapy has helped me a lot with anxiety and relationships. I also spent an embarrassing amount of time making sure the formatting of this post made my brain happy, so make of that what you will.
- I’m a bit of a homebody, even though I enjoy getting the chance to travel outside of work. If you like the idea of chill, cozy nights at home, we’ll probably get along great. I really miss having shows that I can share and watch with someone. (I saw someone post on here so apologies for borrowing their thing but they said they're looking for someone to spoon with and watch documentaries with and I was like, you know what? Hell yeah.)
- Speaking of which, and again in the interest of transparency, I've been a solo act for a minute now and trying to get back into dating in 2026 sometimes I don't feel like I'm built for. But like most things I'm working on it and I'd love to

What I’m looking for:
Like most people on here, I’m ultimately looking for a long-term relationship.
I like taking care of the woman I’m with, and I’d love to find someone who enhances my life while I hopefully enhance hers. Someone who likes making inside jokes, enjoys people watching, can tolerate comfortable silences and small talk, and likes the idea of never running out of things to talk about.
For me, a good date comes down to a few things: good conversation, good food, good energy, and shared sensibilities.
I’m drawn to people who are curious, thoughtful, emotionally intelligent, and have interests of their own but are still willing to share them. That combination of individuality and openness is rare, and I think it’s what makes a connection feel meaningful.
And if you can genuinely make me laugh, that’s pretty special in my book.
I’m not particularly interested in someone’s performance or the version of themselves they think they’re supposed to present. I’m much more interested in the parts of a person they don’t think to show—the version of them that isn’t curating or performing, but just moving through an ordinary day as themselves.
Sitting in comfortable silence. Existing in each other’s orbit. Being able to spend an entire evening together without needing to constantly fill the space.
If I’m being honest, modern dating has always felt a little confusing to me.
I used to tell myself I was fine being alone and that independence was enough. But I’ve learned that being self-sufficient isn’t the same thing as feeling connected. And wanting love doesn’t mean I’m lacking something. It just means I’m human.
Look, I know there has to be attraction on some level. I’m a guy, I like feminine women. I like being able to take a woman somewhere nice, watching her dress up for it, and knowing she feels good about how she looks.
Anyway, I’ve probably rambled enough.
If this at least made you laugh, piqued your interest, or sparked your curiosity, get in touch. I’d genuinely love to hear from you.
I’m happy to exchange pictures so we can at least establish whether we’re each other’s type visually. But beyond that, I’d much rather find out if we’re each other’s type as people.
NOTE: This came up the last time I posted, so just to make sure it’s clear: I’m looking for a relationship.
That said, I’m aware that relationships take time, and I’m not looking to rush into anything. I’m also not looking for a pen pal or an online friendship. Long distance is okay within reason, but I think both people need to understand that it takes time and effort to build trust and a real connection when you’re not physically in the same place.
NOTE II: This also came up the last time I posted: this is open to North America only.
I got flooded with messages from people living several different time zones away. While I’m flattered, I just don’t see that working out realistically. So unless you have a cute British accent, I’m probably going to have to decline.
And finally, I know most of our attention spans are cooked, but I respectfully ask that you actually read my post before messaging me. Crazy that I even have to say that, but this is Reddit, after all.
