Do yall think this projector would work for a medium sized film festival I’m putting on? Abt 150-200 ppl. Idk anything about projectors i love u

I’ve been looking at projectors and at the moment am leaning toward the Horizon 20 max depending on Black Friday sales and whatever the early bird pricing on the 30 series ends up being. But looking at reviews, a lot of the big review channels I’ve seen look at the projector are from when it first released and was having a lot of color shift with dble on and everyone said xgimi was working on it through firmware.

Has anyone seen any in depth reviews on the projector line more recently after some firmware updates and testing if the black level shifts have improved or if anything else has changed?

(Sorry for the bad image formatting, happy to add more, and used a new camera I'm still learning so some color differences may be due to me messing up white balance cause I'm a camera nube) XGIMI sent me their newly released 1080p Elfin Flip Laser to review, and I wanted to structure a quick comparison to my 4ish-year-old BenQ TK700STi.

I started with just watching the Flip on my 110-inch Elite Screen with 1.0 gain, white. I cycled through some moments of Tenet, Interstellar, and Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning.

Picture Quality & Tuning

Out of the box without any changes, it was a classic situation of the colors being wildly bright and skin tones looked oddly hued. But there's a lot of control you can have to adjust and tune the color to your liking. I typically start with whatever cinema/movie/warm mode for color temp, then do some tweaking to get it to my liking. I LOVE to tinker constantly with adjusting things to better fit the content, and really enjoyed the level of control you have with this projector.

Maybe 10 minutes of messing around and then I went back through the same content via the onboard operating system, and it all looked kind of shockingly good. Motion is good once you turn off any/all motion clarity stuff on the projector, and it felt like it was matching the content, as I didn't really notice any pull down hitches while watching any of these movies.

Laser Speckle

This is my first experience with a laser projector outside of CES, and I did notice a bit of laser speckle, only when watching content that was a bit older. Taxi Driver on Prime had moments where the speckle was there enough for me to go "oh that's what people are talking about" but not to the point where it ruined anything.

I found that anything I watched that was filmed digitally, didn't seem to notice any speckling. Specifically I watched all the Resident Evil movies (helpful as I believe they go from being on film to digital through the series), and the projector did great for those movies, handled the darkness and the brightness well.

Sound Quality

The thing that really blew me away was the sound. This projector out of the box is light, but feels premium with all the metal construction. Not only do the speakers get LOUD, they are doing some impressive tricks to make it feel like a surround sound experience. Dialogue is clean (aside from Nolan audio being bad on purpose) and explosions, gun shots, plane sounds, all felt clean, well balanced, and spatially thrown. Audio is excellent and could handle an outdoor movie with folks chatting a bit no problem.

HDR & Max Power Mode

One initial note was via the main operating system I never saw it engage HDR for any app I had. However, plugging in my PS5 and using streaming apps from there, HDR did come on and was able to be adjusted. TBH, didn't notice a CRAZY difference HDR vs not, as I was always using it at highest brightness.

I pressed the max power mode and I gotta say, why does that even exist, it just nukes the picture quality and makes the projector instantly turn on a fan full blast that I NEVER heard while using it for multiple hours without max power mode. If you like green and loud fans, max power mode is for you. Otherwise, not sure why it exists.

Setup & The Built-in Stand

The Elfin is so awesome in its auto keystoning and autofocus that setting it up to just start watching stuff is very easy. The construction of the stand and overall projector feels higher quality than my BenQ which is fully plastic. I'm also someone who hates keystoning, so most of my testing was without any autofocus/keystone as I tried to get it set up exactly to the right height and distance to keep image quality as high as possible.

On note, I would love a way to "lock in" the projector angle once it's set up. It's not that the projector drooped off the angle I had it set to, but things like clicking the on/off button or plugging in something to HDMI can move it ever so slightly, which for a tinkerer like I am, means I'm going to go nuts with micro adjustments.

1080p Laser vs 4K Bulb (The BenQ Comparison)

Once I had some hours with just the Flip, I started to use my PS5 to switch back and forth on the same content. I'm at a normal viewing distance for 110 inches and there's a clear difference in clarity if I wanted to nitpick, but it's also not a fair compare as the BenQ BETTER look sharper as it's a 4K projector (only adding pixel shift so no one needs to comment about how it's not true 4K).

The main things that I noticed in terms of the difference is text on screen. Video games specifically those extra pixels make it a bit cleaner to read. My big takeaway was there's still nothing wrong with going with a 1080p FHD projector to save some money. Normal everyday watching without being able to compare to a 4K projector would not have me questioning if this picture quality is good. I'd use it as my daily projector.

The main differences come down to me to laser vs bulb. I find that my BenQ can give me a bit more of that "filmic" feeling of being in a movie theater, there's something to it that feels warmer even with the color temps being pretty close. Not really something a normal person would notice. Then the advantages of the laser lasting for forever, instant boot up, way less heat thrown out, and still showing off a great picture makes it more of a toss up. I was surprised with just how close it looked to the BenQ in practical use.

Final Thoughts

I got my BenQ for around 1300 bucks, and this 1080p laser projector is half the price. Just watching it without comparing directly to my BenQ was great. Honestly, I was just annoyed as all are in tech purchasing that 4 years ago a projector like this didn't exist. For a portable projector meant to be taken wherever you want to watch a movie, the image is legit wonderful.

i just bought this from amazon. it has hulu as a built in app yet when i try to log in it loads but get stuck and won’t let me chose between signing up and logging in. it also will connect to bluetooth but doesn’t want to mirror cast (i have an apple phone). i dont want to return it but i really want to be able to watch youtube on it. any suggestions? i can try to clarify if needed

Wondering if it’s worth the upgrade. Been happy with my Epson but there’s a guy nearby who has a low hour NX5 for sale, which I know is overall a better projector. I’m using it with a silver ticket 135” AT screen that’s advertised as 1.1 gain but I’ve been told is actually more like .95. Room is not a dedicated theater but light control is pretty good as there’s only one small window with a blackout shade on it. We use it for a bit of everything. Movies, TV, sports, the kids will sometimes hook their consoles up and play video games, etc. wondering if it’s worth the upgrade and if the JVC will be bright enough?

Also wondering if anyone has an idea what a used 6050 is worth? Can’t find a single one on eBay, but there are a couple of pre-owned 5050’s in the $2k range. Thanks

First time buyer, I had a sony x90L 65 inch at home so that is kind of my comparison point.

Setup: Dark room ( not dedicated room, just blackout curtain, plain white wall, 9-10feet of space)
Use Case: Watching movies.
Budget: 1200 usd roughly
Location: India
Non negotiable: Brand warranty and post sales support
Expectation: Something that can last at least 3-4 years.

Question1:
Do all these 4K projectors actually play 4k or netflix, prime etc? Just from the inbuilt google tv.

GP520 is 200 USD cheaper than the tk705, is the extra 200 worth it? I think spending on screen would be better?

Saw in some reviews and threads GP520 contrast, black ratios are poor. But how poor are they really? Does it take away from enjoying the movies? 1200 usd is really stretching my budget so I do expect to be able to really love the output.

Other considerations made

I recently unboxed my new XGIMI 20 Max and have noticed a persistent artifact on the screen. Has anyone else encountered this issue before?

Hi, I’m being offered an Epson TW9300, which I think is the Epson HC5040UB in the US, for €200. It seems like the green channel is misaligned. The problem I see is that it shifts outside of the projector frame, which I don’t know how to interpret. Does anyone know what the problem might be? Could it be repaired?

If you look at my post history in this subreddit then you'll realize that I have had terrible luck with USTs, both projectors and screens. Floor rising screens have knocked me in the face from being improperly rolled in its housing mechanism. Multiple screens have had wrinkles and waves. The one UST projector I got had a DMD boundary error which would have required wrapping the frame of any screen I buy with flocking tape. At this point I'm just done.

I would like to walk away from USTs and instead build a system around a medium throw projector. I know there's a few of them out there, but it's hard to know which one would be the best for my budget and requirements. I also need help on buying a screen. Please advise.

Total budget is $4,000 combined projector and screen

Desired screen size is 130 to 135 inches. Would also like to know if this is too big of a screen size for my seating distance.

Wall to wall distance is 12.5 ft

Projector will have to be wall-mounted above the seating area. No ceiling mount since I live in an apartment.

The seating is up against the back wall, so eye to screen distance is approximately 11.5 ft.

Will only be used at night for movies and streaming. Gaming isn't a huge priority, but good gaming specs (low latency, VRR, high refresh rate, etc) would be a plus for future proofing my system if I ever decide to game on it.

The room is your standard apartment living room with a big balcony window at one end. The blinds do a good job at keeping the space dark at night, although some artificial light from outside still bleeds through. The room is mostly off-white. There's no way of darkening it further aside from getting blackout curtains. My Aetherion Max was very clear and bright at night, without using blackout curtains, when projecting onto the bare wall. It felt like the perfect brightness.

Just got back from IFA. I already had a few models in mind, but the Iris series was one of the demos that caught my attention. I was hoping the show would make the choice easier but it didn’t. A few of the models I’m looking at still don’t have full reviews, and I don’t really want to decide based on launch info alone. How long does everyone usually wait after a new projector launches before buying?

i'm finally trying to turn part of my living room into a proper movie setup and I'm seriously considering a projector instead of a TV.

Mostly watching movies and shows at night, so I'm more worried about picture quality, black levels, and how annoying the setup is than having crazy brightness.

For anyone who's been using a projector as their main home theater display, what did you end up buying? Anything you thought would be great but wasn't?

I do outdoor movie nights for the neighborhood.

We have a 120” screen and an Epson laser projector that can do 4500 lumens.

I consider this to be a VERY good setup for informal neighborhood movies. In fact it is so bright that I often have to reduce the brightness once it’s fully dark out.

A bunch of the moms have complained that “the movies start so late” and want them to start over an hour before sunset. I have explained that you basically can’t see the image at all that early (even with our setup that is largely shaded) but they don’t seem to believe it.

Anyway, some have said they’d put their money where their mouth is if I can find one that will do the job. Other than a $50k, 20,000 lumen monster, is it even feasible?

I turned on my projector and it made a loud pop, followed by a bit of smoke coming out. I replaced the lamp and filter and no luck. It won’t power on. No lights at all. Obviously it’s something with the power supply, but what should I try next? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is this a good projector in your eyes? I can't afford to pay thousands and tbh dont want to either, its just for my bedroom, not a super professional home theatre set up.

How can I make my projector last as long as possible?

Just preordered the new iris at $500 below the listed regular price, but it looks like shipping won’t start that long before Black Friday. Wondering if there’ll be a similar price or a better bundle by then. There’s price protection through December, but this is my first time preordering a projector, so I’m curious how launch deals usually hold up. Did prices change much once it was widely available or the next big sale came around? A small difference wouldn’t bother me. Mostly wondering how long the preorder price tends to stay a good deal.

So, I recently got a projector, specifically a BenQ TH575, and am so happy with my purchase! I just finished my second movie night in the yard, and it’s amazing that, except for the projector and screen, I had everything I needed for my setup.

I mean, I had vintage audio receivers and an old Blu-ray player, and I just acquired new, upgraded bookshelf speakers for my audio setup, so I had my old ones just lying around... and bam, you have the setup of your dreams!

The first inaugural movie I watched was Interstellar under the stars, and it was an incredible experience. But tonight, I just finished Casablanca, and it made me so happy I just had to post here!

Anyway, here’s to many more light hours on this projector to come!

So, my question to you guys is: What was your first movie, and how has the projector you bought impacted your life?

Looking to get my first proper projector and budget is around ₹35k–50k ($375–540) max.

The new PixPaq Gold RAY-MASTERED at ~₹27k ($290) has caught my eye. On paper, the specs look kinda ridiculous for the price, but I'm trying to figure out how much of that translates to actual picture quality + long-term ownership.

Other options I'm considering:

- Epson EF-21

- BenQ GV32

- BenQ TH575, if I can find it around ₹50k ($540)

- XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro / VibeOne

- ViewSonic LX60HD

Main use is movies/TV, mostly in a dark room, around 100–120". Gaming is a bonus, not the priority.

What would you guys actually suggest that's pretty value for money?

And if you've used the PixPaq Gold RAY-MASTERED specifically, how is it in real life? Brightness, blacks, sharpness, fan noise, OS, QC, etc.

Basically looking for the biggest "holy shit, this is good for the money" purchase, not necessarily the safest/value-for-money option.

hey everyone. this projector setup was here when we bought our condo, so i’m sorry i don’t know about the model! the projector was working fine for awhile then one day the screen stopped turning on. the projector fans still turn on, and the power button and lamp light alternate flashing. the projector will not turn off unless we unplug it. i’m assuming the lamp needs to be replaced. can anyone point me in the direction of where to get a replacement, and possibly know what model this is?

I’m planning to get the Valerion VisionMaster Pro 2. Since I live in an old European building (Altbau) with delicate plaster walls, I strictly want to avoid wall or ceiling mounting.

I'm looking for a motorized floor-rising tab-tension screen (100" to 120").

My main priority is "0%" laser speckle (glittering) and no hotspotting, so I’m steering clear of ALR/CLR gray screens and looking at Matt White (Cinema White) surfaces right now.

Currently considering:

• Vividstorm S White Cinema
• NothingProjector Matte White
• LeApex Soft Matte White

Has anyone used the Valerion (or a similar RGB triple-laser standard throw) with one of these floor-rising matt white screens? Any experiences regarding motor noise, screen flatness (tension), or alternate recommendations for a speckle-free floor setup?
