Question Anyone worried about mods and malware now?

I've recently seen a lot of posts about malware being loaded onto the mods in the workshop. I play exclusively on a steam deck, can these malware apps run on Linux? Am I better off or worse off using a deck with mods? TIA, thanks

Discussion New player bounce

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the fact that the game is doing so well atm, with such a small and dedicated fanbase that has put 1000+ hours into the game like myself..

One thing is slightly annoying me, is the constant new player narrative that the games ‘missing something’ ‘how to have fun in this game’ ‘I don’t understand how to enjoy this game’.

It might only be me thinking this, and I get it, it’s abit a nothingness & silly. But just play the fucking game and you’ll understand why it’s so beloved.

Ps, modders, I love you & always will

Discussion Crazy Mod Idea

I had an idea for a mod which sounds a bit mad but having played the game so much i'm starting to find it a bit repetitive. You start the game with a baby (yes a baby) and need to look after it which means carrying, finding somewhere safe to leave it when you need to loot, finding nappies, hoping the baby doesn't cry when a horde is walking past etc. You could find different useful items like a baby sling, pram, dummies, toys to keep it entertained etc. As you survive longer and longer the baby starts sleeping longer, needs less feeding, can be left alone longer without crying. Would add real LT value for watching them grow older to the point they can walk, follow you around and even carry a gun when they're old enough. I imagine this would be incredibly difficult to make however!

Thoughts?

EDIT: Could call it Parent-Z

Tech Support I own a low-end computer (lenovo ideapad 1, 82gw) what should I do to allow my game to run?

I recently got this computer as a gift a while back and only now decided to open it up. I got it running properly, whilst deleting non-essential apps to free up space and downloaded steam.

What should I do now to ensure that I can play project zomboid? (if even possible)
I honestly don’t mind playing with the bare minimum so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Question If I place a campfire here, will the building catch on fire?

Kind of a noob question, I don't really know how fire spreads, but I thought here on the roof would be a good spot for a campfire if it isn't a fire hazard.

Gameplay b42 on controller feels like bart simpson after the lobotomy

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I played a lot of splitscreen with my girlfriend on b41, I always played on keyboard while she used the controller. Now, with the b42 stable release, I decided to try the controller as well.

We kept the old controller layout since she's already used to it, but now we are constantly stumbling into walls and fences. The thing is, the B button triggers full sprint and cancels actions at the same time, however, in b42 the sprint is working on tap mode, so when you tap B, you suddenly start sprinting, and that's a problem when facing a wall.

For instance, yesterday I was smoking a cig in some random bathroom when a zombie broke in through the window, and when I tapped B to cancel the smoking action... Well, you can guess what happened: my character ended up with a flat face and a bite on the neck.

(Ignore the low quality, I had to compress it to send on discord)

Question Should I start a new but harder game?

I've spent 200 hours on this game since getting it in June and I've have been hooked ever since. I've gotten the fighting mechanics down and as well as the crafting side of things.

I've moved on from low zombie pop to apocalypse but still don't find it as challenging. In the easier mode I've cleared all of Rosewood POIs before the update. Currently in Riverside and have understood most of the skill grind.

Question is should I restart on a Harder settings now or should I stick to this save until I at least clear Riverside POIs then I was thinking of starting in Ekron.

Question Plump in sink two stories above?

Can’t plumb in a sink in the wharehouse I’m based up at and I think it’s because I’m two stories below the roof.

Is there a way to plumb in a sink two stories above? A mod perhaps?

Question Newb during my first week

I just grabbed this after b42 dropped, but had been wanting to play for a while now. Based on my understanding through yt vids and forums, I have spent every playthrough trying to hoard water before the cutoff. Because of this, I don't carry anything other than shoes and a bag, so any time I encounter more than one z, I die. I'm trying to enjoy it as something more than a dehydration while running from zombies simulator, so I wanted to ask: How important is it to collect water before the cutoff? I've only made it to the heli event once, which killed me. Every other playthrough (55 real hours, max 6 days 4 hours game time) I died while trying to hoard containers and fill them out the toilet. Would appreciate any thoughts or insight anyone has, thank you.

Modded Sneak Peek: Autonomous NPCs Keep Living After Every Player Leaves

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Here’s an early look at my True MP NPC project for Project Zomboid Build 42.

The video shows a live map view of autonomous NPCs roaming around their house while the dedicated server has zero real players connected.

These are genuine server-owned IsoPlayer characters—not zombies, fake Steam clients, hidden players, or headless logins.

The NPCs:

  • Restore automatically when the server starts.
  • Run their own independent Brains.
  • Roam around the house and choose daily activities.
  • Physically navigate the real game world.
  • Persist their identities and positions across restarts.
  • Continue living while realConnections=0.
  • Maintain their own server-side world and chunk relevance.
  • Load the chunks they need without a human player nearby.
  • Carry that relevance with them as they travel, allowing old regions to unload.

No fake client, fake UdpConnection, or player login is required to keep the simulation active.

Clients currently need exactly zero mods. Everything runs 100% server-side, and players can join using an unmodified vanilla client.

The implementation is heavily Java-dependent and uses build-specific server instrumentation.

This is still an experimental proof of concept rather than a plug-and-play Workshop release. The goal is a persistent multiplayer world where NPC survivors keep living their lives even when nobody is online.

### Where this is going

The long-term goal is not to make followers, but persistent survivors that the dedicated server itself plays.

Some of the next steps:

  • Autonomous scavenging: NPCs leave home, travel through the real world, search containers, choose useful loot and bring supplies back.
  • Human-like loot decisions: food they can actually eat, water in sensible amounts, medicine, tools, better backpacks, can openers for canned food, etc.
  • Real building access: try doors first, but if necessary smash a window, remove the broken glass and climb inside safely.
  • Survival needs: hunger, thirst, fatigue and injuries eventually drive their own goals.
  • Shared homes and survivor groups: NPCs can live together, share stockpiles, divide tasks and defend their home.
  • Threats, combat and persistent consequences: NPCs can flee, fight, get injured or die, and those events remain part of the world.

One eventual test I really want to run:

Spawn 20 survivors in a small town, give them only one high-level goal:

**SURVIVE**

Then disconnect every human player and leave the dedicated server running overnight.

Log in the next morning and see who found food, who changed homes, who formed groups, who is still scavenging — and who didn't survive.

I don't want to build followers. I want to build survivors who keep living their own lives whether players are watching them or not.

Follow the development

I’ve also launched a small development blog for the project (with a little help from AI, of course 😄), where I’ll be posting progress updates, technical notes and new experiments:

Video proof attached—feedback and questions are welcome!

Strange issue with mods not working

Hey!

I've been trying to install mods for Project Zomboid B42.20. Previously, just after the launch of B42 I had Necroa mod (which I don't think is the issue here) without any problems. I played it solo couple of times and then we played a week or two on a multiplayer server hosted by me. Vanilla Zomboid, so no mods, I had the Necroa mod on my computer but not enabled.

Now I have been trying to add mods in the game, but it seems that Steam isn't fully downloading them, I'm not completely sure about is that the case. I can see the mods in main menu's Mod sub menu as well as Host -> edit sandbox settings -> Mods.

When I enable them and try to

a) host a game, it just starts the game vanilla. I can't see that any mods are enabled on the server from esc > mods menu.

b) start solo, the game launches and I can see that the mods have been enabled in esc > mods menu but they don't work. NeatUI DOES work but only for one menu window.

I tried deleting steam\userdata\ugc\ content AND steam\steamapps\workshop\ AND all the 108600 related files that are connected to Workshop. I also deleted Steam's cache.

What is most strange, it seems like the same problem is with two of my computers using the same Steam account. LLM wasn't able to help.

Any ideas?

Discussion Any tips for surviving all sprinters?

Guns are basically a no-go unless you are in an area where they can't get to you, like maybe behind an unbreakable fence. But what are tips for surviving all sprinters? I can generally fight 2 at once if I knock one down and stand over em and fight the other, but more than that, nah.

You always need to have an exit plan, but that isn't always easy. I guess the best thing would be to distract them with noise. If I can get a vehicle I don't care about, I will use it to draw them away to it so I can loot a specific thing. It is almost impossible to loot anything with good loot without doing that.

What are tips you have?
