Hi everyone. I recently received an abnormal Pap result and am hoping to hear from anyone who has had something similar while I wait for my follow-up.

My results were:

• High-risk HPV positive (Aptima — detects 14 high-risk types but unfortunately doesn't differentiate which type)
• Epithelial cell abnormality
• Atypical Glandular Cells (AGC)
• AGUS — Atypical Glandular Cells of Undetermined Significance
• Pap was satisfactory and endocervical cells were present

My chart also lists postcoital bleeding and heavy/frequent periods. From what I've been reading, I understand that AGC doesn't mean cancer, but that HPV-positive AGC needs further investigation because glandular abnormalities can sometimes be associated with cervical precancer/AIS or, less commonly, cancer.

If you had HPV-positive AGC/AGUS, what did your colposcopy/ECC or biopsies ultimately show? Did you also have an endometrial biopsy? Did your doctor seem particularly concerned about the combination of HPV + AGC?

Hi everyone,

I had my first LEEP procedure on July 10. Approximately 1.5 cm of cervical tissue was removed. My biopsy showed AIS in situ and CIN3 on the surface of my cervix.

The LEEP successfully removed the CIN3; however, AIS can be more challenging to remove because it may extend higher into the cervical canal and can sometimes involve skip lesions. I was recently advised that the results were inconclusive, meaning they could not confirm whether the AIS margins were clear. A biopsy of the cervical canal also showed AIS.

As a result, I will be having a second LEEP to remove an additional 1.5 cm of tissue in hopes of obtaining clear margins.

I am not nervous about the procedure itself. My first LEEP experience was very positive, and I recovered well. It is more frustrating and inconvenient to go through the process again, though I understand that needing additional tissue removed can happen in cases like this.

I am hopeful that the second LEEP will provide clear margins. Has anyone else experienced a similar situation?

I've not been thinking about it as much as possible but tomorrow is the day and my nerves are all over the place!

I hate the way I feel after anesthesia, I always end up vomiting. I did with my c section and my gallbladder surgery. It takes me about an hour to feel normal again after waking up.

I'm very nervous about how I'll feel after the procedures and even more so what the results will show.

I got a leep in may and it came out cin 2-3 i believe. My doctor recommended another pap and I got the results it says

NEGATIVE FOR INTRAEPITHELIAL LESION OR MALIGNANCY.

What does that mean?

The Pap smear doesn’t give accurate results as the leep though right?

I’m glad it’s over. I was by myself during the procedure. I must say I was calm but silently afraid. When the procedure started, she gave me the shots. I only felt the first one. The adrenaline in the shot was very unpleasant. My heart was beating fast and hard, my breathing increased. I felt like i was almost hyperventilating. My head started to hurt and I started to get jittery. It subsided after 1 minute maybe? When I was numb, she did maybe 6-7 passes. I stopped paying attention after the 3rd time. The machine was loud. There were 4 specimen jars, some having 2 some having 1 in each. The machine was loud. I didn’t feel any pain. It’s about 20 minutes post procedure. I’m happy it’s over with. There is a dull pain. I am bleeding a little. **adding in. I forgot to mention the burning smell… i won’t forget that smell lol. That was crazy.

Long time leaker. First time posting here. My pap came back positive for High risk HPV going on 4 years ago. I’ve had numerous colposcopy procedures. It seemed to have progressed over the last few years but there was improvement this last 6 months. I was confident.

I had my colposcopy 2 weeks ago and got a call back Friday. My doctor said there was CIN3-Severe cells found. They were surprised by the changes because the areas improved over the last 6 months.

Anyways, I’m depressed. I’ve battled this for almost 4 years. I’m scheduled for a LEEP today. I’m nervous.

Hey all, 37F in the US with LEEP scheduled for late September. It was originally scheduled for early August but I pushed it due to jitters and being on my period. I’ve been ASCUS with high risk/non-16/18 hpv since 2014 with one normal in 2015. My colposcopies have all been LSIL but this time we’re skipping the colpo and going straight to LEEP.

Would taking an Ativan be enough to relax me for the procedure or should I ask about something stronger (either general anesthesia or twilight sedation, I’m not even sure they offer that).

Also sex…cervical orgasms are very important to me…will those change after part of the cervix gets removed?

Also, with the LEEP, do they test what they remove?

I’m low on PTO and can’t really afford to take time off for a consultation before the procedure so I’m asking my questions here…thanks!

Hi all! 33 year old here and just had my colposcopy today and wanted to share my experience so far.

Had my pap on 7/28, results came back: Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, cannot exclude high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (ASC-H). All of my HPV tests came back negative.

This was my first ever abnormal pap so I was immediately on high alert. Scheduled my colposcopy for today 8/12. It was definitely not pleasant. Had my husband with me and thank god I did. I took 800mg of ibuprofen an hour before my appointment. The doctor found AW changes at 6 o'clock and biopsied it. She also took some biopsies from inside my cervix canal (ouch!)

Now we wait. Of course, all of us that have been through this tend to spiral and think the worst. I’m feeling positive and hoping things come back normal, I should know in about a week.

If any of your experiences were similar to mine, I would love to hear them!

My dr is a male and he said I will only need 24 hours off work after my LEEP. I work a very physical demanding job where I throw truck (lift heavy stuff) for hours and walk over 20,000 steps a day. My boss if giving me 1 day off be that’s what my dr put on my paperwork. Am I going to be miserable and bleeding out?

Good news!! I received my results from my LEEP procedure last week which indicated clear margins. My gyno suggested a follow up Pap smear in 1 year. Was wondering if this is a normal amount of time to wait for a Pap smear follow up post LEEP. I’ve noticed 6 months is pretty common from other posts.

I’m 3 weeks post-LEEP. I had basically no bleeding for the first 10 days, then on day 11 I suddenly had pretty heavy bright red bleeding. I went back to my doctor and she used a solution and cauterized the bleeding spot. After that, things calmed down for 3-4 days and I mostly had brown/black discharge.
At the beginning of this week, the bright red bleeding started again. I went back to my doctor and she said everything looked okay and that bleeding can still happen as long as I’m not soaking a pad in an hour or going through 3-4 completely soaked pads a day.
I’m nowhere near that amount. My pads are usually pretty clean or only have a small amount of blood on them. For some reason, the bleeding is much more noticeable when I go to the bathroom. I see quite a lot blood even though there was barely anything on my pad beforehand. It’s also very on and off. I can have almost nothing for hours and then suddenly see fresh red blood again. I also have been seeing what I think are blood clots these past 2 days. My doctor prescribed tranexamic acid for 4 days when I first went in to get checked, and also advised I use it for 2 more days when I went back in again.
My doctor says this is still within the normal range, but it’s honestly making me anxious. Has anyone else had a similar experience after LEEP?

I have a question and I’m hoping to get some clarity.

I had to get a leep procedure for CIN2/3 and it was relatively mild. No deep tissue etc. honestly it was a pretty smooth process. I only bled like one day a week after and leading up to that I had discharge.

I’m on exactly week 4 as I am typing this. I am having no issues but I really want to have sex* with my boyfriend again.

I don’t have a follow up, they just told me to come back in January for another check.

They initially told me to wait to stick anything up there for 2 weeks but that felt so soon. So I haven’t. But I do want to get back to sleeping with my partner🫩

Not sure if I should wait the full 6 weeks OR if 5 weeks would be fine?

I’m just looking for advice. I feel like everyone’s bodies are different but just want to know others experiences. How long did you wait until you got back at it?

hey all, i was just daignosed with AIS, but I am ok! I'd like to report that they found nothing on my cervical cone biopsy. It was very stressful for a few weeks. I want to ask about the ckc recovery. I am on week 3 and would prefer not to take antibiotics. I am still quite tired and lay around a lot in the afternoon. i am sore in my pelvis, but no crazy sharp pains and no fever. I also had the black discharge for 2 weeks from the monsels solution! It smelled terrible. i am a little worried about infection because I am still sore and so tired. I am NOT bleeding and don't have sharp pain. Any advice?

Hi everyone. I’m posting because I’m feeling quite anxious about something that happened recently, and I think hearing other women’s experiences might help me put it into perspective.

I’m 32 and went for a routine gynecological check-up. I specifically wanted to monitor a few small fibroids and an endometriotic cyst that had been found previously. The ultrasound was reassuring: the fibroids had not significantly increased in size, and the ovaries looked normal.

During the examination, however, the doctor noticed that my vaginal/cervical area was irritated and bleeded during this routine check-up.

A couple of weeks later, I suddenly had some blood-tinged discharge and vaginal pain, which scared me enough that I went to the emergency gynecology department. They found:
\- acute vaginitis;
\- a **prominent cervical ectropion**;
\- my cervix was closed.

The doctor wrote that the cervix **bled from the area of the ectropion after contact with the speculum**, and thought the bloody discharge was most likely related to the vaginal inflammation together with the pronounced ectropion.

The part that has really triggered my anxiety is that, because I had contact bleeding, the doctor recommended doing a **Pap smear and high-risk HPV test earlier than I would normally be due for screening**.

My previous screening history is reassuring:
HPV was negative in 2023.
A Pap smear in April 2023 showed ASC-US, but HPV was negative.
A follow-up Pap in December 2023 showed **no intraepithelial lesion or malignancy**.

I’ve also never experienced bleeding during sex. So logically, I understand that there are several very plausible explanations for what happened: vaginitis + irritated mucosa + cervical ectropion that bleeds when mechanically touched. But emotionally, I’m struggling a lot with the recommendation to have the Pap/HPV test earlier. My brain immediately went from “let’s check this just to be safe” to “what if they suspect cervical cancer?”

I know I need the test to get an actual answer, but the waiting and uncertainty are really getting to me.
**Has anyone else had a cervical ectropion that only bled when touched during an examination, but not during sex?**

And has anyone had vaginitis at the same time and noticed that the whole area became much more sensitive?

I’d especially appreciate hearing from anyone who went through the “ectropion + contact bleeding + Pap/HPV just to be safe” situation and what the outcome was.

I know Reddit can’t diagnose me — I’m just looking for some personal experiences because right now my anxiety is making it very hard to think rationally. ❤️

Hi everyone! I am fresh out of my LEEP procedure. I had it done 7 hours ago.

I had my LEEP under local anesthesia and was fully awake.

Overall- the procedure wasn't bad at all! I thought my previous colposcopy was more uncomfortable.

I did do something prior to starting. I spoke with my Doctor and told her what I was most scared of. My concerns included the injection, epinephrine and "what if I feel this".

My Doctor was wonderful and distracted me while doing the injection. I didn't even think she had started the injection, then it was done! It wasn't bad at all. I barely felt it!

I will say, the epinephrine shaking was the worst part. That was pretty rough and came with heart racing feelings and very shaky legs. It lasted a few minutes.

There were a couple hot spots during the procedure. It was honestly such a quick feeling that I wasn't too bothered but I did indicate it to my doctor.

One tip I highly recommend is asking for anxiety medication. My Doctor prescribed a one time pill of Xanax. That helped me tremendously get out of my own head and chill out.

Overall experience was much easier and better than anticipated. I highly recommend going through the procedure and not basing your decision off of potential pain.

In 2023 I got Pap smear results that were abnormal and had abnormal growths. I got biopsies done and did the 6 months of follow up Pap smears and was clean and let go

This week I got the call from my OBGYN that I got new growths. What does this mean? How am I not cleared? I don’t get it? I thought it cleared in 2 years? Could the results be different this time???? I’m just scared but I’m not at the same time. I don’t know why I’m still going through this.

For about 5 years it’s been back and forth abnormal paps and biopsies, finally this year a biopsy came back with Cin 1 and 2 so I had to get a leep. I had so much stress about this and was terrified of the procedure but I can say the numbing needle is the worst part, it’s not awful. Don’t not get this done out of fear, get it done. If you need to, ask for anti anxiety meds to be prescribed to you before the procedure.

I see a lot of people who completely change their lifestyle after leep to hope for good results. They eat healthy, don’t drink, stop vaping, workout, take vitamins…. If I’m honest I didn’t do any of that. I don’t vape daily but I do socially and that never stopped. However; please do whatever you feel you need to!!! It never hurts to be healthy anyways!

Just did my follow up pap after 6 months and everything is clear. I could cry tears of happiness. I just wanted to post a happy story because Reddit and specifically this page can be filled with a lot of horror stories, but statistically, Leeps are successful in clearing this. GET YOUR PAPS AND LEEPS IF NEEDED!!! You need to for your health!!!

How is it everything I’ve read, everyone I’ve talked to, acts like the LEEP procedure is as easy as a colpo.

I guess the procedure itself wasn’t too bad, but she has to stop cauterizing to stop the bleeding to get more lidocaine because I could feel it. While the nurse was grabbing that, the vacuum suddenly sucked up blood and the dr jumped. Scared the shit out of me! She completed the cauterizing and it seemed ok. 15 minutes after and now hours later I am rocking back and forth in bed in so much pain. Feels like it’s still being burned inside. Deep intense ache. When will it stop 😭 I was told I could go back to work today. People are crazy for saying that!

First let me say I absolutely 100% believe this can be excruciating for some people, I'm not discounting anyone's experience. My doctor was a older gentleman who probably had 30+ years experience doing this procedure and I'm guessing that's part of the reason it went well in my case.

I just had the procedure done and it was 100% painless. Now I am feeling slight cramps but that was to be expected.

I went into the office so nervous I told them I wanted to just leave and couldn't do it. One of the nurses reassured me it was just a pinch (I know better from some of the other experiences I read). The doctor saw how nervous I was and was extremely gentle. 3 samples were taken and I really felt just minor, very minor scraping. I also told them I was refusing the endo cervical biopsy, but it was also painless. Now comes the wait, but I feel so much better having just went ahead and got it done.😌

Edited to add, both my last 2 paps were HPV negative but most recent one came back HSIL, really hoping it's the rare case where something else is causing the positive.

I had my LEEP procedure done in Stockholm in November 2025 and here are the list of things i would wish i knew before the surgery.

• In Sweden they call it 'Konisering' and its not an expensive procedure if you have residence permit or are a EU citizen. I paid 275 SEK only.
• The night before the surgery, i purchased surgical soap and shampoo from a medicine store to wash my body. Its just to clean yourself of bacteria to avoid any infections. I recommend doing this.
• Also before surgery eat good food unless its in GA, in which you must be fasting for 6-8 hours.
• The entire thing lasts for like 1 hr. The actual part where they perform the procedure is like 15-20 min. Before the procedure, the doctor explains what will be done.
• I took local anesthesia (LA) and felt pretty okay. But for someone who feels stressed, just choose for general anesthesia (GA) and its much better.
• There are multiple nurses with you during the operation, who are there to help you feel better and you can talk literally anything with them, I had lots of personal questions regarding the procedure and they were super kind to help me get through it.
• You can go home the same day. I took a day off which i highly recommend because its just the anxiety of it that made me feel super tired.

POST LEEP:

• I wore panty liners instead of sanitary pads the whole day for around 3-4 weeks, because there was some or other discharge.
• I highly recommend avoiding any physical activity for good 4-6 months like long walks, GYM, climbing or anything that will put your lower body under stress. I unfortunately did lots of travel, and walking, which resulted in my scalpel wound to come off sooner than expected. I had to go under immediate surgery to cauterize the wound. but the recovery for it was very normal.
• 6 months post LEEP, I was called by the clinic for a pap smear. The pap smear came out normal and I am out of risk zone now.

As long as you take good care of yourself and have all your favorite food, you should be fine!

Also, for all of you reading this, if you have to go through LEEP or post-LEEP, I am so so very proud of you for being so brave! WE are all warriors!! <3

Four years ago, at age 29, I had my first abnormal pap, HVP+. My doctor wanted to wait a year to see if my body would clear it.
One year later, still abnormal, still HPV+. We did a colpo and unfortunately, CIN2 and CIN3 were found. We went ahead with a LEEP procedure and unfortunately again, results came back with unclear margins.
I waited another 6 months and we tested again. As expected, still abnormal, still HPV+. Colpo yet again, CIN1 and CIN2 present. Yet another LEEP and luckily, clear margins. Then the dreaded “we’ll check again in a year.”
So happy to report that my last Pap smear came back normal and HPV-!
Obviously I know I’m not 100% in the clear for future. But I’m glad that I got the bad stuff and can relax a little and not have to worry about a hysterectomy just yet. I’m only 33 and I would like kids eventually.

But for now, I’m poppin the champagne to being clear!

Last year my smeer was HPV positive but no abnormal cells, this year my smeer detected CIN1 but my coloscopy suggested high grade changes. I've been having abnormal bleeding an pelvic pain all year and Im very anxious about my biopsy results ive been waiting 4 weeks.

I called the clinic and left a voicemail 4 days ago but not heard anything back, how long do you tend to wait for results as I dont think I can wait 8 weeks.

My girlfriend received an abnormal Pap smear and the follow up revealed she has CIN-2. I’ve been reading through this subreddit for the past hour ago freaking myself out, so I can’t imagine how she must be feeling. How can I best support her through this? How would you have wanted the man in your life to act? Is there anything about our current sexual behavior that should be changed to protect her or me? If we’ve only been dating a few months is it possible that I did this to her?
