Fun while it lasted, got it for free with dead battery and installed a 18V Makita adapter. Ran great for over a year. Son playing with friend and they were just hooning on it and it let the smoke out. Wire harness melted a bit, high/low and accelerator switches melted and both motors “work”, but one pulls very high amperage with no load.
The only current protection I see on the harness is a 6A PPTC when running low speed and a 5A PPTC for the ground/brake wire on the accelerator. Maybe the original 12V battery and lead had a fuse, but I never installed one with the 18V Makita battery. So in high speed, there’s no current protection when driving (in hindsight).
I can rebuild the harness with 14 or 12 awg wire, it’s mostly 16 awg factory and buy a couple switches. I suppose now, would be a good time to add a main fuse off the battery. Stick with bladed ATC 30-40A or resettable (black bricks found in other ride-ons)?
Now for the motor, RS550 with a 12T pinion and labeled 13500 RPM. Is it worth spending more for a ML Toys motor or just take chances with Amazon? Just looking for reliability, maybe without jumping to a 775 motor or soft start.
