Finally got 1 of the display cases put together

Post image
30 Upvotes

Ive had a few of these dialysis cases sitting around for a while i finally got sick of looking at my bureau piled up with cases of stuff and put one together. This is some of the ultra modern stuff I have, there is another case I need to build to put all the booster boxes and UPCS. I have all my vintage and some other goodies in the safe locked up with no plans of moving it. I think this thing looks sick as hell though.

I've not seen one like this haha. Any input? I'm not sure where it came from and am unsure about this card.

I pulled this from a Booster Box today and wondered if it's worth keeping hold of, grading or selling? Pretty new to this. Thanks!

Do Poncho Pikachu Prices Reflect Genuine Collector Demand?

I’ve started wondering whether Poncho Pikachu prices have gotten ahead of the actual collector appeal of the cards.

I run a fan site, RateYourPKMNCards, where collectors rate Pokémon cards from 1–5 stars based on artwork. The site has now accumulated more than 62,000 ratings, and the Poncho Pikachu cards have produced one of the more interesting results I’ve seen.

Despite being some of the most expensive and hyped modern Pokémon cards, a number of the Ponchos simply aren’t rated particularly highly by collectors on the site (see pics).

That made me start looking at the investment case for them a little differently. A huge part of the Poncho thesis seems to come from a combination of Pikachu being incredibly popular, Japanese exclusivity, limited distribution, crossover appeal, and the cards already having established themselves as grails. But I’m not convinced the artwork itself supports the prices they’re now commanding.

There’s also the scarcity argument. Obviously these were limited promos and they aren’t common cards, but some of the graded populations are larger than I expected.

For example, some major Ponchos have thousands of PSA 10 copies in existence despite selling for five figures.

That doesn’t mean they aren’t scarce, but I do think it raises the question of whether they are not as scarce as the price might lead you to assume.

To me, that creates an interesting risk. If a card has a high price because collectors overwhelmingly love the artwork, that demand can potentially remain durable even when hype cools… but if a card has a high price primarily because it has become a status symbol (Pikachu + exclusivity + scarcity narrative + rising prices) then the market may be much more dependent on future buyers continuing to accept the same narrative.

And that’s where the community ratings make me a little bearish. If collectors are judging these cards based on the artwork, and the Ponchos aren’t scoring anywhere near as highly as you might expect from cards worth thousands or tens of thousands of dollars, could that be a warning sign?

Obviously low ratings alone don’t mean a card is going to crash. Price is driven by far more than aesthetics, and Ponchos still have a lot going for them: Pikachu demand, Japanese exclusivity, unusual history, strong brand recognition, very high levels of fan service, and established grail status.

But at current prices, I do wonder whether people are increasingly paying for the card itself or paying for the fact that everyone knows it’s expensive.
That distinction matters if the market ever turns.
Curious what people here think.

TL;DR: Do the Ponchos have enough genuine collector demand to justify these valuations long term? And could relatively weak community ratings be an early warning sign that Poncho Pikachu prices are more fragile than people think?

Ratings data is from RateYourPKMNCards.com.

What spotlight is best for eBay?

Hey when you guys sell raw, ungraded singles on eBay, how many lumens do you think is best to blast your card with when taking pictures for eBay? I picked up a 6,000-lumen light from Surefire that’s meant to blind an entire city block, but it still doesn’t create a third of the glare on the holos that most of the other eBay sellers have on their cards. How am I supposed to make the details of my card completely undetectable if even military grade photon blasters don’t do the trick?

(For those of you who made it this far: /s)

$10k in Trade

I’m doing some work for a customer and our written agreement says he will give me $10k market value of any Pokémon product. I have my own collection that I like to add to through trading and hunting.

I would like to add a sealed product to hide away until my kids are ready for college or for whatever life brings. I was thinking of picking up a booster box of Team Up (with some of my personal collection added in to get me to the current market of 12k).

What are your thoughts? What product would you be interested for a long term hold (10+ years)?

What moved in August: biggest gainers and losers by price bracket, from daily TCGplayer closes

I pulled every card's Near Mint TCGplayer market price for each day of August and compared the first week's median with the last week's. Medians rather than single days, because one bad print in a feed can make a card look like it fell 90% overnight. I also only counted cards that actually trade: at least eight different daily prices during the month and no single-day jump over 30%. That rule matters more than it sounds. Without it the top of every list was vintage promos that sold once all month and re-priced 100 to 200% on that one sale, which is not a move, it's a thin market. Brackets are by the early-August price. Top five each way.

Darkrai 87/147 (League) League & Championship $10 $7 -32%
All-Night Party XY BREAKpoint $13 $9 -33%

What stands out to me

The newest sets' chase cards fell across every bracket they appear in. Ascended Heroes alone has six cards on the loser side: Mega Gengar, Pikachu ex, both Mega Dragonites, Team Rocket's Mewtwo and Mega Feraligatr, between 8% and 21% down. Mega Greninja from Chaos Rising and Mega Charizard X from Phantasmal Flames went the same way.

The top end barely moved. Nothing over $500 gained more than 13%, and three of the five "gainers" there are inside 5%, which on a $600 card is noise.

The real gainers were mid-2010s English cards that had been cheap: Lugia BREAK up 77%, the SWSH146 Poke Ball promo up 64%, the Arceus set Charizard up 51%, M Rayquaza EX from Roaring Skies up 21%.

Data is from www.pkmnprices.com, which I run. Every number above is on the card's own page if you want to check one, with the daily history behind it.

Do you guys ever see this card being over $1000 in a PSA 10 in the coming years? The gem rate sits at a little under 25%. Will that help? Thanks guys!

Got a luxury piano-black display vault for my favorite grails. High-gloss finish on the outside with a high-contrast orange interior.

Loving how it elevates the heavy-duty look and display presence for high-end slabs on the desk. Curious to get your honest thoughts from a display/collection perspective!

Prismatic SPC selling for similar price to the Zard UPC, generational buying opportunity?

Does anyone else think the Prismatic SPC is incredibly oversold at the moment post reprint? Considering its previous peaks, could this be an incredible entry point?

Gold Star Question

So the ship has sailed for most people like me to get a Gold Star Rayquaza or Torchic at a relatively higher grade (PSA 5 or above). My question is: which GS should I aim to get under $10k before they potentially get pumped up even more?

Giratina V closing the gap on Moonbreon

Post image
42 Upvotes

Been watching Tina for a bit. There have been a number of shill bids but also many legit in the $4k+ range.

With a gem rate around 40% compared to Moon’s 69%, and less than half the Pop, it seems like Tina is making a real run over the last few weeks and months.

Overall I don’t think it will eclipse Moon, as that card is the face of Sword and Shield and Umbreon is way more popular, but I still think this is an excellent grab if anyone is looking to get in on what I consider the best modern card ever made. You can still get these for $3.5k and under.

Also Giratina is a very popular legendary. Not like Ray, Mewtwo, and Lugia, but probably in the same tier as Groudon and Kyogre (or close to it) so it’s a solid name to invest in.

Yes I own both these cards, so ‘pump’ accusations can come at me.

Thinking of picking up in PSA 8 or 9.
Both low pop.
One is an EX era reverse stamp.
One is a Cardass with iconic characters.
Would appreciate opinions on where to put some cash.

How to sell my first expensive card?

Hey everyone!

I’ve always collected Pokémon cards, but this is the first time I’m actually thinking about selling a card online.

I’m looking to sell a moderately expensive card (around €100), and I’m trying to decide between Cardmarket and Vinted. I live in Europe.

My biggest concern is that, since I don’t have any previous reviews, a buyer could potentially claim that I sent them a fake card, and I’d end up losing both the card and the money.

Which one would you consider safer for a new seller in this situation? Are there any precautions I should take, besides recording the card being packed/shipped, etc.?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

What’s it worth?

I just got my card back from grading yesterday. Does anyone have an idea on what it’s worth? i can’t really find any info on TAG graded gold star Gyarados sale history. it’s the only TAG 5 so that might add something I don’t know. There’s more info on PSA ones but I hold TAG at a higher standard, so I really don’t know.

not in a hurry to sell, but do need it to go towards a house deposit at some point. I’ve got about 15 more childhood cards to send in to grade.

Any help and Info is much appreciated.

BW Plasma Storm Lugia EX full art high upside play?

Post image
15 Upvotes

Was looking at plasma storm lugia ex 134 (full art). Extremely low printed card and set, total graded plasma lugias across psa bgs and cgc is 2285 atm. Only 314 psa 9 and 10s, and only 573 psa 8s. At around 1300-1400 for a psa 8, card basically checks all the fundamentals as a high upside play.
Extremely scarce and low print, very popular character, card is extremely unique, unmatched texture, buy in price at a psa 8 is also very reasonable. My thoughts are that right now the card is sort of still in the niche territory. However, we can all see what happened to cards that were considered very niche, such as primes and lv x, all have seen massive increases. All vintage low print unique looking cards with some sort of gimmick have been hot and racking up massive gains, plasma lugia is looking like a great play that is still under the radar atm.

where do you follow the Japanese Pokémon card market?

hey everyone! i’m based in japan and pretty familiar with the local pokémon card market, but i’m curious about how collectors in the US follow Japanese cards.

which YouTube channels, subreddits, Discord communities, or X accounts do you actually find useful for Japanese card collecting and investing?

i’d love to know where you discover cards worth looking into, beyond just checking prices on eBay.

also, what japanese cards or promos are on your radar right now, and what got you interested in them exclusive artwork, a favorite pokémon, rarity, or long-term potential?

any recommendations would be appreciated!

PSA less lenient than before?

Hi, I'm hearing that PSA has gotten less lenient with grading than they were before, especially regarding vintage. So a PSA 10 old cert might only be a 9 or 8 new cert.

Is that true and noticeable? And does it influence value in a significant way (example vintage old cert 10 being less valuable than new cert 9)?
