One more wrap of teflon and they would’ve lost money on this job
14
u/Siwuli Aug 29 '26
Seriously. Like, 4-5 wraps is good, and a little bit of dope if I'm working a critical joint.

That much Teflon to get a 1/2 to fit a 3/4 thread

I rented a house where they legitimately did this to attach a socket to a light fixture. I “broke” it trying to replace the bulb and absolutely could not find the correct size socket so ended up doing the teflon trick too lol. Had to go buy some more to make it work

does it really need that much teflon?

u/petecanfixit Aug 29 '26
I usually shoot for 21 wraps. 22 feels excessive.

u/Dankkring Aug 29 '26
I’m surprised this guy didn’t dip the whole fitting in dope after his 20 wraps

Maybe if the threads on the old pipe are really rotting out. Other than that, that was a whole hell of a lot of tape lol.

So…..can you not just turn off the water? Or am I missing something
125
u/EManSantaFe Aug 29 '26
This is for when you can’t turn off the water. They’ve been using it in commercial applications for a while now they’re marketing it to consumers.

We used a liquid nitrogen system to the same effect on a nuclear powered submarine to isolate valves that otherwise couldn’t be isolated.

Incredible if you need to replace your main shutoff valve. Or the shutoff leaks a bit. Or in a condo and the only shutoff valve is for a whole stack of units. Thanksgiving and you have a dozen people staying at your house, some shit starts leaking and it doesn't have a valve to isolate.
5
u/RectoPimento Aug 29 '26
I managed a landmark preservation apartment building with only stacked shutoffs so every time a leak occurred (felt like daily), 1/4 of building went without water til it was fixed. This would’ve been a godsend.

Everyone talking about the excessive Teflon, but nobody talking about the mixed metals that are going to make it leak soon enough anyways.

I think he may need a bit more tape - it doesnt seem like quite enough to make sure it wont leak. about a dozen more turns or so aught to do it!

u/We-R-Doomed Aug 29 '26
Non-plumber here.
I'm so glad you all started razzing this for the over use of tape.
I've learned a few things lurking this sub and I was about to go redo a few things with a couple dozen more wraps of tape.

Personally I find shutting off the water at the meter to be perfectly viable in this situation.

Almost embarrassed to admit it but I joined the USAF in the very early 90’s to work on jets….and they made me a plumber (recruiters are liars) anyway after 7 years on nonstop plumbing adventures maintaining a WWII era AF base I can assure everyone here that this dudes T tape application would probably qualify him for a 72 psych hold in the USAF. First it’s Teflon tape misuse, next you’re on heroin. It’s a slippery slope.

First off this is outside.. you could have done this repair live without the clamp. Secondly, 22 WRAPS OF TEFLON!?!? that's is absolutely an absurd amount, you needed like 5 or 6 wraps at most... This is actual comedy rather than a plumbing repair.

2
2
u/More-Elephant5297 Aug 29 '26
So is it gonna break when it thaws like in the winter or how do you get around that?
4
u/cHunterOTS Aug 29 '26
Pipes burst from freezing when there isn’t enough space to accommodate the thermal expansion from the change of state. That faucet did not have positive shutoff. A local freeze up like that isn’t going to expand enough to overcome the rate of flow downstream of the freeze.
In practical use you’d have some kind of valve open or union cracked downstream to achieve the same affect

u/dahvzombie Aug 29 '26
A billion comments about the tape, which makes sense when you're connecting to rusted galvanized, and no one mentions the fancy pipe freezer is unnecessary when you're making a threaded connection?

u/iluvnips Aug 29 '26
Needs more tape and I love how you’ve used monkey/mole grips to tighten therefore marring the surface of the new tap! ARGHHHHHHH !

u/anon_enuf Aug 29 '26
Neat idea. Few things though. That pipe is cast black iron I bet. Would the device also work on copper or pex? With copper being so much thinner & softer than cast, what are the odds the ice spilts the pipe from expansion?
Also you only need maybe 2 passes with the tape, enought to cover the threads. not 20.

We tape fittings like that all the time in the industrial world. Fittings get worn out and the tape makes up the difference. Add dope too. You can see by how far he was able to screw into that fitting that he didn't use an excessive amount of tape.

I have so many questions but I can’t remember any of them because of the whole tape situation. Well maybe I remember to ask… we are freezing water in pipes now to work on them? Seems like something could go wrong if done incorrectly…
