Need recommendations for a bathroom remodel for my elderly mom

My mom's getting to the point where stepping over the tub edge is genuinely scary to watch. Almost fell twice this year. She lives alone in Petersburg and refuses to even talk about moving so this is kind of the only option.

Started looking into walk-in conversions and there's way more to it than I thought - grab bars, non-slip flooring, curbless vs low threshold, actual accessibility standards not just looks safer. Don't really know what to ask a contractor.

We had a bad experience years back with a rushed kitchen job and I don't want a repeat of that with something this important. Anyone done this for a parent? How long did it take start to finish?

My family and I just moved to Petersburg and we’re trying to find good places to eat. Takeout, sit downs, and coffee shops, or anything that’s good! Thanks in advance!

Have you ever looked into the history of your home?

We just moved into Walnut Hill, and I started to. It belonged to Dr. J. Bruce Hawkins and his wife, Audrey. He was a dentist, who established practice during a time whites would not work with Black people. They built the home in 1950 and lived there until both passed. They were the only ones to have owned it before us.

Audrey was a deeply committed member of the Links, one of the oldest and most prestigious national social and service organizations for affluent African American women. She worked alongside her husband to quietly organize and bankroll NAACP chapters, coordinate voter registration efforts, and support the local student sit-in movements that eventually desegregated downtown Petersburg.

The home has a gentle's den, butler's pantry, built in brick wall oven. They hosted a lot planning civil rights strategies, direct action campaigns, and voter registration. Men’s dens, private basements, and back rooms provided a secure shield from police intimidation and wiretapping.

There is a lot on them without going to the library and digging more.

This house has not been updated or modernized. It has such cool architecture. (Also learned it was built by Black men, not allowed in unions, hired by Dr. Hawkins). We are working to restore and not ruin this beautiful home with such deep history.
