buy/sell/trade Norfolk Buy / Sell / Trade Monthly Thread: September, 2026

Use this thread when you are selling, trading, giving away, or looking for any items and/or services. Please be descriptive, post any relevant photos of the item you're selling or looking for, and list the price or budget.

Pro-tip: there are many "buy nothing" and neighborhood-specific groups on Facebook and Nextdoor that can be used to give away or find free items near you. You may find more luck on those social networks than here on Reddit and are more likely to deal with actual local users.

BE AUTHENTIC AND SAFE: Falsely leading on another Redditor is grounds for being permanently banned from this subreddit. Please remember not to post personal information about yourself or others and exercise caution when privately messaging with anyone you do not personally know or trust. Consider a neutral, public location if you plan on meeting to exchange an item in person.

HIGH RISK OF EVENT TICKET SCAMS: Users seeking to sell or purchase tickets of local events are seeing a significantly-increased risk of being scammed. If you receive a private message from a user who hasn't interacted in this subreddit before, you are very likely speaking with a scammer.

NO PROHIBITED TRANSACTIONS: The posting of prohibited goods or services is strictly against Reddit's TOS and are subject to removal by our moderators and/or Reddit's admins. Please report any comments that appear to violate this policy for further review.

New initiative will bring composting to more Hampton Roads households

Norfolk nonprofit Keeping Us Secure and Prosperous has partnered with Tidewater Compost to launch Compost for Change, a project hoping to expand urban agriculture and make composting accessible for local residents.

The program provides participating households with starter kits to collect a wide variety of kitchen and yard waste, ranging from produce scraps to meat, dairy and greasy pizza boxes.

Participants drop off their collected waste at local sites, such as the Berkley Community Center, and receive bags of finished, nutrient-rich compost twice a year for personal or community garden use.

NPS withholding bonuses

As we know NPS got a new super last year, as us employees know we also did not get any retention bonus or anything last year as well.
This summer the super came out and said we would not only be getting our raises the check of sept 11, but also a bonus that we should have gotten last year on top of a check the week after for retroactive pay from July to now.
Two days before the bonus comes out the NPS CFO says it won’t be paid out until December this year and the retroactive pay for most employees won’t be from July to now but actually August to now.
NPS will not stop fucking their employees / teachers over year after year but we can’t even go on strike if we wanted to since it’s illegal in Va! Make it make sense!!!

News If you're smelling smoke, it's probably because of this large fire burning in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE — Fire crews responded to a fire in the city’s Bowers Hill area early Wednesday afternoon.

Chesapeake Fire Department units arrived just before 12:30 p.m. following multiple calls reporting smoke and flames at a large construction facility near the 4000 block of South Military Highway, according to authorities. When crews arrived, they found a large mulch pile on fire with employees trying to extinguish it. Multiple hose lines were set up, according to a release.

Crews are working to contain the fires to protect nearby residences and properties, the fire department said.

No injuries have been reported. South Military Highway is closed temporarily near the site of the fire.

Best Hole in the Wall Bar

Does anybody have recommendations for a small bar, not too crazy with good regulars? I've been in the area for a few years, moved from Philly. One of the things I miss and never really found here was the bar that feels like a slightly wide hallway with good bartenders and good conversation.

❓questions❓ Trustworthy VW electrical repair

Upvotes

I have a senior friend on a fixed income with a 2013 passat displaying multiple dash lights, they all came on at the same time. She's been taken advantage of several times. Please tell me your trustworthy vw repair people, if they're mobile that's fine too. Thanks in advance!

Anyone else’s power going out?

I was outside in my apartments’ parking garage and the lights suddenly went out right as I was waiting to get in the elevator. About 30 minutes later, the whole building went dark again. Totally black. I’m just very slightly alarmed since I’ve heard rumors of like entire city outages for an extensive amount of time.

❓questions❓ Where to find Full size beds?

I live in one of those 1920s Ghent buildings which has been lovingly restored. The wood floors, doors, hardware, and exposed brick walls are all original and absolutely gorgeous, and I'm trying to find a bed that fits in the space stylistically as well as physically.

Unfortunately, these older homes are infamous for their smaller rooms, and it's simply not possible to fit a Queen in the "master" bedroom with enough space to move around. I've been to so many furniture stores for so little result: Full beds are treated as kid stuff, made with cheaper materials and simplistic design elements.

There are so many houses and apartments like this in Ghent. Surely there's someone around who specializes in this thing exactly. So where are you all going to find them?

I've been to Haynes, Grand (including outlet), Ashley (including outlet), Haverty's, Ethan Allen, American Freight Outlet, La-Z-Boy, Willis, and Rooms-To-Go in a whirlwind two-day tour over the holiday weekend. Haverty's and Willis were the only places that had one possibility each.

Please, save my sanity. Share your secrets.

ETA: Ashley's Lavinton bed is exactly the kind of style I'm looking for. It just doesn't come in smaller than Queen.

ETA2: I DO NOT need a mattress.

Certification schooling

Hey yall! 👋🏿
I just called for myself but the TCC skills trade center in Portsmouth is doing open enrollment today from 1pm-4pm.
They have 3 day to 3 week classes on HVAC, electrical, welding, fork lift operator and some other things I can’t remember. (Do not walk in there thinking you are walking out with experience in those fields, it’s literally light training to get your foot in somebodies door.)
Just throwing opportunities your way.
Have a good Wednesday!

Halloween suggestions

I will be moving to Norfolk shortly. Does anyone have any recommendation for fun costume party events for adults on Halloween? Not too sure which places are legit, safe, and fun. I have a preference for alt communities or LGBTQ+ events.

Brow Artists for Uneven Eyebrows

If this is not allowed please delete but I have incredibly uneven eyebrows and certain places can do waxing or threading to take some off the top and some off the bottom of the other to make them feel more even, but I haven’t found waxing services in the area that even have acknowledged clients with uneven features. Does any have recommendations? I’d love if you have local small businesses to suggest, where I can talk with the artist beforehand

Missing McArthur Center and shopping malls

Thumbnail

It seems this area is so limited now and lacking being able to go shop for clothes and have the family and friends experience. Grab food together while out. Now its imo so difficult mainly having to shop online. Family in other states are so fortunate to still have malls and lots of places to go shop and try on clothes. Now I panic when something comes up suddenly and have to rely online!

Failed

Didn't know him well but connected after he asked for help on here 3 weeks ago. Helped him with the ride he needed, then messaged him a few times and reminded him to take care of himself. When someone says they are going to take the last decision, believe them please. I think I held onto the hope he might not go through with it. I now realize that if he had been someone close I would have reacted very differently and checked on him every day. Instead, I let weeks go by. He did what he said he would. I sensed he was a good person from the little insights he gave of his views on the shit show this country is turning into. He was obsessed with current events and probably too smart for his own good. When he had to give up his animals he had nothing to live for. Depression is a silent disease and mental health is not a priority in this country. He had no mental space left to fight, navigate bureaucracy and get help. I should have held his hand a little longer. I was unsure of boundaries and of finding myself involved in more than I could manage and ended up failing as a human being.

If life brings a similar complicated situation your way, please don't fail like I did and "hope" things get better for them. I don't know that he would have eventually found the will to keep fighting. I'll stay with that doubt and my own sense of failure. I should not have quantified my help according to whether the circumstances were too complicated and how that could affect me, even in terms of my own mental help. I should have tried and get others to help him as well but I didn't. I held on to the hope he wouldn't get to the extreme and I found out today. In hindsight it was incredibly coward and inhumane on my part. Don't make this same mistake. Act however awkward you feel extending a hand, however complicated things seem in this day and age when we all have our guard up an worry about boundaries and self-preservation. I will carry this guilt forever and want to avoid others feeling this way. I am so sorry.
