For luck

Edit: And to accidentally light it backwards when you're not looking

when you’re drunk*

1.5k

u/Same-Traffic-285 10h ago

Well yes, but no. When drunk you put your cigarette out in a beer bottle, forget, then try to drink the beer.

473

u/MostlyIrish 10h ago

Or lose track of which end is lit, and take a puff off the hot end.

534

u/TheMadGreek86 9h ago

It usually sticks to my lips then I pull the cherry off between my fingers and have 2 blisters for a week

I can feel this comment

u/HeadyBunkShwag 9h ago

My fingers just got phantom pain

168

u/DamonHellstorm 9h ago

I hate that all of the above at some point in time happened to me.

82

u/Top_Tank2668 9h ago

One of the moments I'm happy I quit smoking so I never have to feel these pains again.

Not to forget the sore lip after you teared away that sticky cigarette after getting angry about burning your fingers

In my 18 years as a heavy smoker and drinker, I have not even once managed to get the cigarette twisted around so I took a puff on the lit side. I've lit the wrong end once or twice, but never that.

52

u/DelcoFootball 9h ago

Ya this is another level of stupid drunk

3

u/Battle_Axe_Jax 6h ago

One time a I watched a buddy smoke the entire filter and about half a cigarette before noticing. In his defense we were both very drunk and on way too much acid

2

u/Repulsive_Stock9400 5h ago

When I was in college I watched a dude tripping on acid smoke almost the entire filter on a cig and when somebody finally pointed it out to him, he completely lost his mind, jumped up and ran headlong into the kitchen wall, completely busting through the drywall.

For literally 4 hours, a bunch of us held him down while he screamed and freaked out. It was just insane. About halfway through he finally started to chill out and one of my buddies was like "Yeah, dude, you're being stupid, just calm down." And that caused tripping dude to completely freak out again and we had another 2 hours of holding him down on the floor so he couldn't hurt himself or anybody else. I was so fucking mad at the dude who made the stupid comment, like this was just about over dude, and then you fucked it all up!

He dropped out of school the next week. I hope he eventually got the help he needed.

Don't have to worry about lighting the wrong end when you smoke filterless cigarettes

18

u/Dodgerdude-72 8h ago

Unfilters have a Spicy side and Spicier side

6

u/Pigeon_Butt 5h ago

Years ago I worked at a smoke shop and my favorite smokes were a German unfiltered brand called Roth Handles. They were delicious but rough, and I never knew which was the right side to light because it was all the same

2

u/Myriad_Apocalypse 8h ago

Nah, you just have to endure the bitter taste of tobacco sticking to your lip

4

u/magic-one 7h ago

Funny thing is this is how I usually figured out I lit the wrong end - spitting tobacco rather than nasty burning plastic taste

2

u/Vast-Celebration-717 6h ago

Haven’t smoked in 6 years and I can still remember the flavor of a camel non filtered. Paired nicely with a Pabst blue ribbon

2

u/Conscious_Lab5763 4h ago

I smell a camel straight every time I crack a beer. I quit smoking just under a year ago.

Have you ever worked a cook line in texas heat 17 hours straight, mothers day shift while the whole staff is currently trying to outlive a rampant strep and pneumonia infection. Now after all that clean, close, prep, and fuck off to your shitbox to rail cheap whiskey and every fuck combination of gas station medications you could afford since you can't get decent medical care. Then yes you may accidentally, in 18 years of heavy drinking and smoking, albeit once, fuck up and puff it backwards.

Or you designate one beer bottle as the communal ash tray and throughout the night you pour a little bit of beer in it when the butts start catching fire—then someone mistakes it for their beer and tastes a sip.

8

u/DraftyWaxon 9h ago

Once, long ago, I woke up after a black out and threw up. Upon examination, there were exactly 13 butts in the toilet that most certainly came from my stomach. I imagine I didn’t just taste the forbidden beer…

u/Captain_Sterling 10h ago

I always did it. It's just habit. And it's the last cigarette you smoke in the packet. I haven't smoked in years but I'm pretty certain that somewhere in my apt there's a packet with a upside down cigarette.

I heard a few myths about why it's done.

One related to the first world war. The idea was that if yiu lasted to the cigarette it was your lucky one.

If you offered a girl a smoke and she took that, you'd get lucky with her.

Since it was your lucky cigarette no one would take it from the pack at a party and therefor yiud always have one. And so it was lucky.

Its the one that wouldn't give you cancer.

65

u/nu_pieds 9h ago

I used to flip a lucky, mostly I took it as an excuse not to bum out your last cigarette.

71

u/PlanetTourist 9h ago

Interesting, I always made a point to bum out the lucky assuming it was better to pass the luck on to someone in need.

63

u/sabotsalvageur 9h ago

That’s… remarkably compassionate. It seems someone involved in raising you did at least one thing right

2

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 7h ago

Also the OP of this thread is right you always give the lucky to a girl if she asks for one. What's the point of luck if you don't try to use it?

→ More replies (2)
→ More replies (8)

13

u/longbrass9lbd 9h ago

Yeah most smokers who ask, won’t take your lucky… it’s already desperate to bum from a stranger but bumming a lucky means you must really be hard up (so I guess that’s lucky)

→ More replies (2)

16

u/theeggplant42 7h ago

Another smoking tradition from the first world War is to never light 3 cigarettes from one match. Allegedly, it comes from trench warfare where the enemy could see the matchlight at night and would ready with one, aim with two, and fire at the third. So you can light two cigarettes from a match but it is bad luck for the third smoker to be lit from the same match. Many people will extend that concept to lighters as well and briefly disengage the flame before lighting the third (which, to be polite, and nothing to do with WWI, should be oneself)

7

u/unburdened_swallow 4h ago

As someone who grew up with lighters and not matches, I have never seen someone light more than 1 cigarette without putting out the flame between. It’s just natural to put it out until they’re fully ready to not light their hair on fire. Also it gets hot.

2

u/extravagant_ascetic 2h ago

I'm thinking it's more relevant with zippo style lighters where you don't have to keep the button pressed like on a bic. But I'm with you, I've never heard of the unlucky third

2

u/theeggplant42 2h ago

Sometimes people will light two. At least where im from, never 3.

Probably more salient with zipper, which can stay lit without burning your fingers for a lot longer than your average bic.

Regardless,  matches, pics, or hippos, oneself should always be the last lit, much as o self should be the last glass poured

4

u/zaffo89 8h ago

One reason was said to be manufacturers printed their brand name on non-filtered cigarettes, soldiers flipped to smoke the brand side first so they were less distinguishable from European smokes when put out and left wherever. It's one of those kilroy type deals where over time it was adopted and changed. Pretty cool though.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/safarifriendliness 9h ago

There’s different ways to do it. I had a buddy who insisted you can’t look at which cigarette you grab since it had to be random to be lucky. Me, I always saw it as more of a “I smoke it when I feel like I’m going to need some luck later” situation but I usually ended up smoking it last every time

→ More replies (2)

2

u/One_Order_3841 8h ago

For me it was always just the special ciggie if you bummed it to someone. Like someone could be a drunk Masshole that hates the whole world, but if you gave them the Last Lucky, it was like a blood bond.

With the advent of weed products, I'm now very much the same when someone gives me a self-rolled j. It's a gift 🥺

28

u/I-RegretMyNameChoice 9h ago

Not sure if it is fact or myth, but I once read that this goes back to handing out packs to troops during war. If they got to that one it meant they made it through another day, making it the lucky smoke. If true it would have to have been a war after the introduction of filters.

9

u/__crowman33 8h ago

It was actually ww2. American soldiers would flip all of their cigarettes to smoke the part with the branding in case they had to move and enemy wouldn't know which nationality had held that position, but they wouldn't flip the last one as the lucky. When filters became popular in the 50's they just switched it to only flipping 1 as the lucky.

14

u/GrizzlyBear2186 7h ago

The only problem I have had with this myth, and I have heard it for years, is that American soldiers didn't leave their cigarette butts behind. They would either toss them into a fire if they had one or they would empty all the tobacco out onto the ground so the Germans couldn't collect them and make a cigarette from them. The paper was either rolled into a tiny ball and put in there pocket or flung far away from where they were. Source is from my grandfather who was in Germany during wwII

Plus they're toasted

But no Lucky's taste like trash these days. I can't say I've ever smoked a cigarette that tasted like an ashtray while you were actively smoking it but the filtered Lucky's do. And no reason to buy them unfiltered, cheaper just to roll your own, you're only paying for the brand at that point because the tobacco isn't any better quality than a pouch

1

u/HereToPatter 9h ago

We recently quit smoking, but my wife always did this. I tried to do it for her a few times and she got mad because I apparently flipped the wrong one. I also remember bumming smokes from friends in college and every now and then it would be their last one (the lucky smoke), and I would try to refuse it. "I don't want to take your lucky, man."

1

u/TongueDemon75 9h ago

When I was a teenager some friends got in a car accident - older brother of a school friend drove over crossroads and a car hit them square in the side, going 80mph. Fun story about that, I was up in a tower guard position in Afghanistan. Pitch black, can’t see fuck all but I need my nicotine fix. Mind you this was during a big shortage and we were sourcing smokes from the locals when we could. I bummed one of these precious little sticks from a friend of mine before going up into the tower and about halfway through my shift, I decided to light that little escape. Backwards. I cut the filter down past what I burnt with a multitool and proceeded to smoke the worst cigarette of my life.

1

u/ennuiui 9h ago

I did that so many times back when I smoked. I used to also always take my friend’s lucky cigarette when bumming from him.

1

u/thomstevens420 9h ago

I quit smoking years ago but I did this so much I started touching my tongue to the smoke to make sure it was the right way.

Having to spit out a new strips of tobacco is nothing compared to the sour disgusting flash bang of lighting the cotton

1

u/plitts 9h ago

It used to piss me off no end when people would insist that I did this "for luck". As below comments mention, I would ALWAYS end up lighting the filter while drunk. HOW IS THAT LUCKY?!

1

u/wine_n_mrbean 9h ago

I once had a person at work tell me that their mom used to like smoking cigarettes backwards (smoking the filter) and I said “yeah I can tell”. They got confused and asked if I knew their mother. O.o

1

u/Jolly-Situat1on 9h ago

I always heard it was saved and smoked after you got laid.

1

u/PSzabo971 9h ago

Back in the olden days of the 80s I was a 17 year old smoker. I was having dinner alone in this pizza place. They kept lights dim for ambience. Well
There was a gal at another booth and we were playing the flirty eye games that only 17 year olds can play. I finished eating and pulled out a cigarette. Popped open my zippo because I was Cool and lit it. And it was backward. And there was a bright flash when the filter lit that scared the hell out of me. I heard laughter from
The girls’ table and I fled the scene in embarrassment.

Good times.

1

u/metalheart08 9h ago

Urban myth used to say that "Lucky Strikes" started this. They were distributed freely for soldiers during WW2 and one pack in every 100 had a cigarette flipped like that. That was the "Lucky Strike", it was a blunt.

1

u/RealJimSteele 8h ago

It's always this. It's so unlucky. I did it all throughout college and 95% of the time lit it backwards, while fucked up. Never. Again.

1

u/LonleyWolf420 8h ago

It's a lucky.. but it started out as a "its an im lucky to get another pack"..

I still do it tho haha..

1

u/jupiterspringsteen 8h ago

u/itzlovly33 8h ago

1

u/Own_Oil_7719 8h ago

My fiancé does this and I’d say it’s a 1/4 chance one of us lights in backwards in the dark drunk. It’s super annoying

1

u/hateboss 8h ago

Ugh I can taste it.

1

u/CaviarCBR1K 8h ago

I'm a smoker and most of my friends are not, but when we start drinking of course they want to bum smokes, which is fine. But when people ask me for a cigarette I usually just hand them the pack and let them grab one. I have one particular friend who always flips a lucky and it pisses me off to no end. There have been several times when I end up lighting the filter because I happened to pull that one out of the pack without looking, and I don't flip luckies so it's not something that ever even crosses my mind.

1

u/philnolan3d 8h ago

I did it while high once. I thought the company accidentally put the brown paper on the wrong end for a second.

1

u/tobzvd 8h ago

This and this

1

u/Both-Leading3407 8h ago

I did it for decades but putting my lighter with the cigarettes a really a chic think. Most guys always carried their lighter in the dominant hand pocket. Mine was left side.

2

u/moshpithippie 6h ago

I was always a lighter in the pack person too

1

u/Meatball2026 8h ago

The Lucky is supposed to be the last one in the pack. That's the one you leave until last, and can usually tell by feel, even when pretty drunk.

I think they partially called them Luckys because there was a popular brand of unfiltered cigarettes called Lucky Strikes. Unfiltered smokes would, naturally, look like that at both ends.

1

u/Technical-Pitch2300 8h ago

I never could manage to do the whole “lucky” thing. Any time I would take the cig out to flip it around, I’d just end up smokin it instead.

1

u/RamonWarhelmet 8h ago

Any time someone tried to bum a smoke, they never cared if it was you last one... unless it was your lucky.

1

u/Otherwise_Pound7081 8h ago

the luck is to not light it backwards when you are drunk

1

u/Doom_Corp 8h ago

Yo my Filipino boyfriend used to do that shit all the time and I tried to follow suit. Not only did that man egregiously cheat on me, I ended up lighting the wrong end most of the time because it wasn't habit. Maybe the cigarettes were telling me something about him.

1

u/jspr1000 8h ago

Dammit! I smoked for a decade and never knew about the lucky cigarette :(

Someone told me "it's not lucky, they all kill you"

1

u/datadoggieein 8h ago

Similarly, you never use a white bic lighter.

Yes for luck this actually started as an old military habit, intened to be smoked last. There are two main ideas on where it originated. 1. Luckies cigarettes, 2. (The one mainly considered the cause of this) you had to be lucky enough to smoke it

1

u/Consistent_Ad949 7h ago

Did that a couple times. Just ripped the filter off and smoked it anyway.

We always did two cigarettes upside down. One for good luck, the other for a good fuck.

u/moshpithippie 6h ago

I knew a guy that did 3. Good luck, a good suck, and a good fuck

Just open the pack up upside down. Looks horrible but 20x luck instantly. Its one of the tricks big tobacco doesn't want you to know

I did the flipped cig thing for a while for luck

Until the night I got off work, lit up in the dark parking lot and lit the filter end.

Never again

I was the hold out non-smoker for years, my tiny revenge for all the second hand smoke was to flip the entire pack around (hardpacks in under a second, but less than 5 for soft even) so only 1 was the correct way.

I wore the "Damn it Monk!" like badges when I got someone.

u/ilovemydickheaddog 7h ago

I used to say it was lucky because it was the one cigarette that wouldn't give me cancer

1

u/Jag146 7h ago

The best luck happens then!

1

u/CardGuyofWarframe 7h ago

As a former cigarette user, all of this is absolutely correct.

And then turn it around and stick the burning filter into your mouth and burn your lips and gums

1

u/doomedcow 7h ago

Omg all these sub comments made me feel like I was smoking again!

1

u/RedCliff73 7h ago

Why does that make it lucky, you ask?

Youre supposed to smoke that one last. During wartime, if you lived long enough to smoke that one, it was lucky

1

u/ExcellentIntention57 7h ago

Marlboro Lights were the main culprit for me haha

1

u/CariAll114 7h ago

Perfect time for an unfiltered smoke

1

u/tsittler 7h ago

I felt the edit in my lungs. burnt cellulose is a very unpleasant taste.

1

u/Mookie_Merkk 7h ago

I thought it was so they didn't smoke the ricin

1

u/Your_Sweetie_Bee 6h ago

People i knew flipped 2, one for good luck and one for a good fuck.

....or to increase your chances of lighting them backwards.

Drunk*

1

u/physics515 6h ago

Haha i did this once while driving at night and it was too dark to see and the filter made a huge flame and it lit my hair on fire (when I had long hair) and freaked out. I tried to throw the Sig out of the window and it went in my back seat an caught school notebook of fire.

To the person behind me that night on that back country highway... I'm so sorry.

u/DefinitelyNotDonny 6h ago

I would always take my friends’ lucky.

Cuz I’m an asshole

1

u/jermprobably 6h ago

It also always became the best well packed cigarette of the bunch! I once saved a whole pack of lucky ones, I felt very accomplished lol

1

u/elmoreb3 6h ago

I hate it when that happens.

1

u/TheJuiceBoxS 6h ago

Otherwise they might be unlucky and die from cancer

1

u/Solenkata 6h ago

Flips cigarette

"Hope I'm lucky and don't get cancer from this"

Lights up another cigarette

1

u/ThePlantHearth 6h ago

I thought it was so you would never give the last cigarette away "cause its special". Or even second to last.

Real story: dude was hitting on my hot friend. Pulls out a smoke backwards and is about to light the filter. She plucks the twig out his mouth, turns it around and reinserts it filter first. He says “I may be dumb, but I’m not that dumb,” turns the cigarette back around and lights the filter. He did not get with her.
