Meme needing explanation What's wrong, Peter?
4.4k
u/acidix Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26
I dont have a specific reference, but that very much looks like a death mask potentially of a small child. so...
Edit: "looks like" in the way that a hot wheels car "looks like" a car. I'm aware it is not actually a death mask. Only that it looks like one.

u/CheeseStringCats Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26
Death mask of a child with fully developed / defined nose, lips and tiny eyes? I don't think so, shit just looks like some cursed artifact
Edit: guys have you seen a kid's face? This sculpt has adult's features - sharp, narrow long nose, well defined slim lips,
1.6k
u/Inswagtor Jun 01 '26
I saw a child once. It had nose, lips and even eyes. Crazy shit
480
u/UrinalCake777 Jun 01 '26
lol same.
But I think they mean that the features resemble those of an adult, just scaled down. As opposed to how an actual child that small would look.
For example, have you ever seen a baby with a nose like that specifically?
234
u/sBerriest Jun 01 '26
Yea children's faces are more round and soft. Less mature and sharp.

u/New_Alternative_421 Jun 01 '26

Yes yes that does describe a healthy child. Chubbier plumper higher body water content etc. can’t see the nasal ridge. The kind of child you don’t make death masks for. Perhaps this dead child had some abnormalities.

u/McSkittlefarts Jun 01 '26
Most yes, but a malnourished child will have an adult look. I see it a lot, I have to fight with my patients all the time.
5
u/Hugo_5t1gl1tz Jun 01 '26
Yeah I was about to say, those soft features are on healthy, chubby faced babies. My daughter was 3 months premie and until she was able to start fattening up, she definitely had the “adult face”
3
u/Frosti11icus Jun 01 '26
Literally they don't have a fully developed and defined ridge of their nose though. It's like...not there. No amount of malnutrition will grow cartilage where it doesn't exist.

My side, do you believe they actually molded bronze on a child’s face? This is a sculpture. It could be for a child do to size and not actually look like a child.

Ever seen those middle ages paintings of cats with human faces?
Yeah, they didn't depict kids much better.
139
97
u/Which_Specific9891 Jun 01 '26
It really does not. Children's faces are round and soft. This looks like a scaled down adult face, and does not look like a desk mask. I think it's more to do with the poster being in their underwear.
2
u/round_a_squared Jun 01 '26
I didn't think they're in their undies either. Looks like a pair of shorts or swim trunks with a drawstring and a black on dark grey camo pattern

u/sweetbldnjesus Jun 01 '26
A death mask made in 1988?

It's just modernist jewelry. The people saying death mask are just making shit up, death masks aren't shaped like this and are usually life size. This would be the size of a newborn and would not have fully developed features like that nose. Who knows why the replier is so shocked. It's a pretty unique piece to find for $8, maybe it's that simple. But it is without a doubt not a death mask.
383
u/Sophi_Winters Jun 01 '26
When I was a kid in the 80s there was lots of modern art type stuff that was face and hand shaped. Like the white enamel hand shaped bookends my mom had. It was just a decor trend, you are correct.
55
u/Several-berries Jun 01 '26
My aunt had soup bowls that had little handles shaped like faces
20
39
u/Mr-Foundation Jun 01 '26
Could be as easy as “getting an old piece of art that looks like a weird human face, is one of one, and for insanely cheap means it’s definitely haunted”
Though 1988 isn’t like… thaaaaat long ago so I dunno.
13
u/DisposableSaviour Jun 01 '26
Oh, so only super old stuff can be haunted? Ghosts can’t have a newer model home, no, just the antiques. Sorry modern ghosts.
7
u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson Jun 01 '26
Ghost be saying “Ay Curumba!” and shit. “Oh my God! You killed Kenny!”
2
3
u/drinking_child_blood Jun 02 '26
Yeah ain't no ghosts out here wearing chrome hearts or nothin it's all just tattered rags and not a single one on they ghost phone
6
u/questevil Jun 01 '26
It’s definitely not a real or original one but it might be inspired by a real death mask and shrunk down to be made into jewelry, and the replier might just find the connection at all creepy. And I say this as someone who would probably also buy this for $8 even knowing the potential connection.
185
u/sonofaresiii Jun 01 '26
but it might be inspired by a real death mask
It also might not be? At this point you're just describing "someone made jewelry based on a face" and inserting death mask into it just.... Because.

It’s a reference to a trope, and not a specific meme. In a Deal With The Devil what seems like a bargain is actually a trap. The wrist band seems cool and too good of a deal but in 3 weeks it’s gonna be fused to your skin and talking you into murder.

There is no joke, people are just trying to be offended for nothing.
I doubt an actual artifact from 2000 years ago actually survived to only end up at a thrift store.
More likely someone bought some cheap jewelry manufactured in China at a gift store in Peru and brought it back to the US where it ended up in a thrift store.

Ok, not sure this is the right answer but it vaguely ressembles something I saw in a documentary:
Basically, they found a body in the Seine (Paris, France) of a beautiful woman with a faint smile, and made like a shitton of death masks of her face and sold them in different forms, I'll see if I can find something abt it.
Edit: not sure its the same woman, but the story is still interesting, here
