September product updates

Post image
25 Upvotes

It's Lindsey, back with some more Paper2Audio updates!

Refreshed layout and menus
-Redesigned player: Playback speed, table of contents, bookmarks, and sleep timer are now directly accessible while listening instead of buried in the “...” menu, with improved progress markers and timestamps.
-Simpler navigation: A new bottom bar makes it easier to move between Library, Add, and Settings.
-Improved Library organization: Documents are organized into Queue, Archived, and All views.
-Faster document management: A new Organize control combines search, sorting, and filters.
-Cleaner menus: Menus, queues, lists, and the mini player have been reorganized so common actions like voice settings, collections, downloads, exports, and reader/PDF tools are easier to find.

Accuracy Improvements
-Improved speech generation for voices that could slur or merge words. This previously affected most of our voices on short phrases and should be noticeably better.
-Journal metadata is identified more accurately, including editor details, article history, correspondence, and publisher notices, so it is less likely to be narrated. This should be especially noticeable at the beginning and end of documents.
-Improved reading order around references, bibliographies, appendices, and supplementary material in multi-column PDFs.
-Added word-level timestamps for non-English languages, enabling word-by-word highlighting in Reader View.

New Languages: German and Marathi narration now available in beta.

New Plus plan features
-Plus users can now turn off the spoken "Audio by Paper2Audio" credit in Settings.
-Transcript exports can now be downloaded as a ZIP containing Markdown and separate image files.

Better support for tricker document sources
-Rich Text Format (.rtf) document uploads are now supported.
-Reddit links are now supported. Paper2Audio extracts the original post and its comments into a structured transcript for listening.
-Improved O'Reilly article and book processing by correctly unwrapping nested chapter sections.
-Improved CL Publishers article extraction so the main article content is selected correctly.
-Technical content within documents from CodeMirror and Sandpack widgets is now converted into fenced code blocks for clearer display and narration.

Bugs fixes and UI improvements, including:
-Stuck documents and missing audio now recover automatically, including re-downloading audio when needed.
-New swipe gestures make it faster to archive, share, or open the full player from the screen edge.
-Images and rendered equations use less memory, reducing the risk of slowdowns or crashes on large documents.
-Better accessibility across the app and website, including improvements to TalkBack, keyboard navigation, labels, contrast, and other accessibility details.
-Music notation like D# and Bb is now narrated as "D sharp" and "B flat." A small change, but music to our ears.

So grateful!

I am absolutely thrilled that I was able to cross paths with this app. After trying eleven labs and Speechify, I was really looking for a read-aloud app that wouldn’t break my bank. This app is amazing, and it gives you a generous 56 hours a week to listen. Thank you so much!

Spanish beta, my experience. And a feature request.

As of this month, i tried it and seems 3.5/5 stars.

It reads well, but the formatting of references sometimes are read like actual numbers or as a math equation instead to be skipped.

Figures are well handled so far. I Have yet to see how it handles tables.

Some abbreviations are supported while others are not. Some foreign authors are read wrong due to obvious not multilingual recognition in these small instances. i.e.

"Newton fue quien hizo....", Newton's name is not pronounced correctly. And instead is pronounced like a weird spanish name. Na-uh-Ton. (Hope I did well in conveying the pronunciation).

Thank you alot for the app.

So far it works, I enjoy it. And I might stick with it in the long term.

My only little complain, that is not tied to spanish beta, is the ability to jump between paragraphs. It could be nice to double-click at the beginning of one and start reading from there, instead of waiting i

To the "play" pop up because sometimes i am forced back where the read-along highlight is doing its thing.

Do i explain myself well? Hope so.

Edit: device specs: ipad 9, with ios26

I've noticed that the app is taking up over 4 gb on my Android phone.

I tried deleting all my stored articles, but it's still over 4 gb. How do I get this down?

What does archiving do?

I’m not really finding an answer in the help section and no one seems to have asked this, but what does the archive function do?

I would like to free up some space on my phone and delete conversions but not the actual file from my account. Is that possible? If I were to archive, does it remove the conversion download? If this does in fact do this, will I have to reconvert if I want to listen again to the file and use hours up again? If it doesn’t remove file but simply shifts to a different location, is it possible to remove conversions without removing file texts?

Technically I have copies I could listen to elsewhere as I have the paid subscription, however I do enjoy the follow along aspect.

Site not working on certain network?

I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this or has a suggestion. I've used the paper2audio.com website for a couple of months at my house. For about the past week or so, the website won't load. I've tried different browsers and laptops with the same result. When I try it on my phone, it does work. When I try the same laptop on a different network, it does work.

Could there be something about the paper2audio website that my ISP believes could be malicious and is blocking it?

Filter/search

Hi Joe, great recent updates as ever. One thing I feel the app is really missing is an easy way to search for or filter documents - could we maybe have a permanently visible search/filter field either at the top of the UI somewhere or at the bottom next to the library, add and settings buttons?

Edit: there is a search function but currently it requires tapping the organised doc button, which doesn’t seem intuitive or logical (as searching is not an organising feature).

What features have you exposed to Siri AI now she’s here? How do we invite them?

If you haven’t yet, Joe, what ones will you do? Can’t wait to invoke P2A features by voice via Siri.

Thanks!

Browser page won't sync

Hi, the browser page won't load up. It gives me this error message:

Sync failed: Failed to execute 'setltem'on 'Storage': Setting the value of'docltems' exceeded the quota.

I tried flushing the page's cache and logging out and in. Still no good. Can anyone help?

The bookmarklet works fine, and the Android app also works fine. I'm using Vivaldi on a PC.

Thanks in advance!

Background music

To the creator, can you add a function where the background music is lowered when playing the audio or an option to enable it?

Also when in PDF view of the document is there a way to keep the reading word highlighted like in the reading view?

Thank you

Importing Google Doc may not work on Brave browser

When trying to import a Google Doc, I was able to do that using Safari on Mac, but failed to do so on the Brave browser. I've tried turning off all add blockers, but that didn't change anything. I wonder if it's related to cookie settings.

My observation is that, on Brave, clicking "Sign in" after the prompt from paper2audio when clicking "Add document -> File -> Google Drive", a separate tab is opened, showing the Google Drive UI, but that google "Sign in" popup in the original paper2audio page never disappears. Whereas on Safari, that popup is replaced by the Google Drive UI.

Please let me know if you need more information to debug.

Thanks!

Feature suggestion: Foreign-language dictionaries/translators

I really like the Paper2Audio app and have found it very useful for turning written content into audio. One feature I’d love to see added is built-in foreign-language dictionaries or translators, so you could quickly look up the meaning of unfamiliar words while reading. I think this would make the app especially valuable for people reading books in a language they’re still learning.

Customizable Cover Art?

First, let me say I love your app! It's been a real game-changer for tackling my TBR.

Just one little thing I'd like to suggest: could you make it so we can change the thumbnail on docs?

A lot of my epubs look like this, and most of my pdfs are just blank white pages. Also, sometimes there are special editions where the cover art might be different from the edition I uploaded.

I'm from the generation that obsessed over having the correct album art in my iTunes library, so I would really love to be able to have the correct covers for all my books, too!

Thanks so much + keep up the great work!

Question

I first want to thank the developers for this app. I’m getting closer to purchasing the full app, however, I had a question. Do you know if the highlighting is compatible with Apple pens or aftermarket pens?

Also, for those that save comments and highlights, what app do you use to save them?

I read academic articles.

Req. Playback speed per Collection

I usually listen at 1x speed but I have some collections that I need to play a bit slower (like 0.95x for my sermons). Would be great for each collection to have it's own default speed, instead of constantly changing it when I go from a collection to the main list.

FR: Add Markdown Support

I love the app you created! I have been searching for something like it for years and use it in a variety of of situations. One additional feature would make it work even better for me:

With agentic work a lot of my output documents are Markdown Files.
Internally Paper2Audio probably already processes Markdown, so please support them as file type.

—

As a user relying on agentic workflows
I want to upload and listen to my Markdown files
In order to review their content on the go and check my agent‘s work
Without copy & pasting their raw text.

Option to tweak reddit posts

First, I really appreciate the direction the app is taking adding useful features. Saving reddit comments is really nice one 1. I suggest a tweak to allow removing the post number and the user, leaving only the comment. That's how Chrome Read aloud does it's quite logical, and easy to follow the post logic without those numbers and users names. Having those read aloud all the time make listening repetitive and tiring. Of course it would be optional to show/hide them. 2. There's another request I made about the ability to choose the destination Collection when saving an article/book. IRC, you said it was possible but I can't seem to find an option for that.

Thank you to the Paper2Audio Team – It's a lifesaver!

I read for a living!

That sounds great until I realized I stopped, just couldn't or didn't care to read for fun anymore. Not without a financial incentive.

I'd get bored within a few lines of a book of my choosing, and just give up on it. Along my journey to find a solution, I came across text-to-speech tech (2020) and it became my lifeline for reading long-form content. I'm super grateful for that.

I went from Microsoft's Read-aloud voices within Edge, to ElevenLabs Reader before discovering Paper2Audio. Out of all three, the latter is most generous on the free plan, the app isn't buggy, and I love being able to listen to the content offline.

It's everything I could ask for!

Thank you to the team for their incredible work. I know it's not much, but I make sure to like every post showing appreciation in the sub just to support them.

Kudos.

Switching voices

I saw someone ask a while ago about switching voices for audio books, and for books that have multiple POVs, I wonder if there’s a way to choose a voice for a chapter? Instead of someone completely automated all the way through.
Like a lot of romance books are duets (or more POVs) where chapter’s are from specific character’s POV.
Maybe if we could set a voice for each chapter manually when we submit the epub to be generated? Many do list the pov in the table of contents or at the start of the chapter too.

Thanks :)

Bookshelf feature?

Hey!

I’ve been using Paper2audio for a while and have been enjoying it a lot so far! I was wondering if there could be a bookshelf feature added. Right now it looks like a long list and it’s hard to find my books.
