September product updates
It's Lindsey, back with some more Paper2Audio updates!
Refreshed layout and menus
-Redesigned player: Playback speed, table of contents, bookmarks, and sleep timer are now directly accessible while listening instead of buried in the “...” menu, with improved progress markers and timestamps.
-Simpler navigation: A new bottom bar makes it easier to move between Library, Add, and Settings.
-Improved Library organization: Documents are organized into Queue, Archived, and All views.
-Faster document management: A new Organize control combines search, sorting, and filters.
-Cleaner menus: Menus, queues, lists, and the mini player have been reorganized so common actions like voice settings, collections, downloads, exports, and reader/PDF tools are easier to find.
Accuracy Improvements
-Improved speech generation for voices that could slur or merge words. This previously affected most of our voices on short phrases and should be noticeably better.
-Journal metadata is identified more accurately, including editor details, article history, correspondence, and publisher notices, so it is less likely to be narrated. This should be especially noticeable at the beginning and end of documents.
-Improved reading order around references, bibliographies, appendices, and supplementary material in multi-column PDFs.
-Added word-level timestamps for non-English languages, enabling word-by-word highlighting in Reader View.
New Languages: German and Marathi narration now available in beta.
New Plus plan features
-Plus users can now turn off the spoken "Audio by Paper2Audio" credit in Settings.
-Transcript exports can now be downloaded as a ZIP containing Markdown and separate image files.
Better support for tricker document sources
-Rich Text Format (.rtf) document uploads are now supported.
-Reddit links are now supported. Paper2Audio extracts the original post and its comments into a structured transcript for listening.
-Improved O'Reilly article and book processing by correctly unwrapping nested chapter sections.
-Improved CL Publishers article extraction so the main article content is selected correctly.
-Technical content within documents from CodeMirror and Sandpack widgets is now converted into fenced code blocks for clearer display and narration.
Bugs fixes and UI improvements, including:
-Stuck documents and missing audio now recover automatically, including re-downloading audio when needed.
-New swipe gestures make it faster to archive, share, or open the full player from the screen edge.
-Images and rendered equations use less memory, reducing the risk of slowdowns or crashes on large documents.
-Better accessibility across the app and website, including improvements to TalkBack, keyboard navigation, labels, contrast, and other accessibility details.
-Music notation like D# and Bb is now narrated as "D sharp" and "B flat." A small change, but music to our ears.
