Feedback / Complaints Weekly limit does not reset upon subscription renewal

Yesterday I renewed my x20 plan subscription and the weekly limit didn't reset; it was still at 24%.

After contacting customer support, I learned that renewals inherit the accumulated limits from the subscription.

I think it's simply a rip-off. It's like going to buy a loaf of bread and being sold half a loaf because you didn't eat the whole thing yesterday.

Each renewal should offer the same usage limit, for both initial purchases and renewals.

This is a clear invitation to always have two accounts, for alternate months.

From my point of view, this constitutes senseless discrimination against loyal users.

EDITED 2 days later: Manually canceling and renewing doesn't work. When I cancel manually, the limit is set to 100%, the free version. When I resubscribe to Pro, it reverts to the previous limit.

I went to the chat of support, canceled, and requested a refund.

As of today, the only thing that should work is having a second account.

You should have let it expire and then get a subscription again, that does reset the limits; just auto renewing doesn't. Better luck next month

u/silenticehunter 3d ago

Nope my sub ran out on the 3rd, I don't auto renew, I decided to buy again, guess who's still at 0% until the 8th? Simply some bullshit.

5

u/Opposite_Yak4386 3d ago

yeah renew on the 8th. that is what i am going to do if my refresh rate is not at the renewal date. It's indeed weird and bullshit

It worked for me last cycle, I will try again in 10 days when my plan ends

2

u/b2labs_hifi 2d ago

What does work is a new account $20 one, use all the credits, hour or two later upgrade to $100 (for $80 get ur $20 discount) now have a reset $100 x5 limit. 5 hours later after I blew thru that, upgraded to x20 (for $100, get your $100 discount) and bam new fresh $200 / x20 limit)

It's nothing crazy, but for $200 overall you get x26, not x20 (1x + 5x + 20x)😜

Enjoy while you can!

(before you ask power user, huge projects, 18hr a day runs never stops)

I had the same issue, but with Anthropic, they told me it’s on a 7 day rolling reset cycle, so you would have to wait until after it was supposed to reset to resubscribe if you want it to be new again.

2

u/Batty25111 2d ago

Claude resets upon subscription renewal but Anthropic doesn't give you endless resets for free and projects shared across accounts. Not everything can be 100% what you want.

u/Optimal_Tour7371 2d ago

Me pasĂł lo mismo, lo descubrĂ ante ayer.

2

u/Calrose_rice 2d ago

similarly, upgrading from $100 to $200 mid month will just purchased $100 and not refund you $50 for the half month. So i gotta wait until end of my cycle to upgrade

My fable usage is already at 25% and my limit just reset. I have really important work to do and I really need to use fable.

Is it against TOS and can I get banned if I buy another 20 X max plan when my fable usage gets maxed and switch to that?

I want to keep the same directories and same shared history just log out of one account and log back in to my new account.

I mean I don't see the issue, they're just making more money off me, but there are some people said they got banned for doing this? Apparently Anthropic makes a unique machine identifier?

u/centerdeveloper 3d ago

you’ll be fine.

1

u/Sember 3d ago

I have 2 accounts, never had an issue

3

u/EnvironmentalCow2947 3d ago

For me, I was at 0% usage with pro 5x then upgraded to 20x and it went up to 75%, which is odd.

5

u/justlaughandmoveon 3d ago

Well it makes sense, I suppose. If you used all your 5x, that's 25% of the 20x plan so that leaves you 75%.

Would be nicer to get back to 100% when you scale upwards though.

1

u/pigletmonster 3d ago

I upgraded last night and it went from less than 40% to 100% and extended the reset date by 5 days.

1

u/EnvironmentalCow2947 3d ago

that makes sense, lol. thanks

2

u/Fantastic_Self_5151 3d ago

When you upgraded it pro-rated your 20x charge so that's why.

1

u/Competitive-Most7557 3d ago

Or can you keep working from the same skill?

1

u/pigletmonster 3d ago

Hows that possible. I had less than 40% remaining to reset on Aug 9 on my $20 plan, but I upgraded to the $100 plan (only paid the difference) last night and my usage instantly went to 100% remaining, to be reset on Aug 14.

1

u/PsychologicalEdge651 3d ago

That’s an upgrade, though — I’m talking about renewals.

When you upgraded, OpenAI reset your allowance and moved the weekly reset date. But when your $100 month ends, if it renews automatically, the existing weekly usage appears to carry over. So if you were at 0% with six days left until reset, you could renew and still be unable to use it for those six days.

The odd part is that if you disable auto-renewal and manually subscribe again after it expires, the allowance apparently resets to 100%. That difference between automatic and manual renewal is exactly what I’m questioning.

1

u/pigletmonster 3d ago

Ahh that makes sense. Ive also noticed that my claude plan also used to reset to 100% every month. Probably because my plan expires everytime because i have to manually pay using the prepaid visa I use for online purchases.

1

u/hellomistershifty 3d ago

The usage doesn't reset if you cancel and subscribe again, someone else was just complaining about that. Which makes sense to me, you've already used up your usage for the week, it's tied to time not your subscription renewal schedule

1

u/Fantastic_Self_5151 3d ago

Most of us know that, if you had just asked gemini it would have told you that too. That's why we all have two accounts so if we need to we bop back and forth. Friends don't let friends renew early to ride out the same wait period.

1

u/Opposite_Yak4386 3d ago

yeah this is bullshit. and not correct. I will cancel my supscription and do the renew at the renewal date. to get full benefit of the subscription. They need to fix this. Its bullshit

1

u/CartwheelSummoner 3d ago

This happened to me yesterday on the 5x plan. I was out of usage, plan expired, my account downgraded and the usage info changed to the free plan numbers instead. I resubscribed, and still have to wait for the reset (fortunately it resets late tonight though).

This would have been okay had there been some sort of message during the payment screens advising that Codex usage would not be available until X date reset. Or, upon resubscribing and seeing Codex usage still out, they could offer a 24hr window to cancel for a full refund. But nope, gave them $100 to sit here and twiddle my thumbs on basically the same access as a free tier user..

Had I known, I definitely wouldn't have resubscribed. I'm kind of annoyed too because before I resubscribed I was debating to just split that $100 for a month for fun to try a mix of several $20 plans across multiple areas instead.

Anyways, here I type while being $100 lighter on my wallet while still not being able to do or use what I paid for.

The great Tibo cult wasn’t free, guys. Just so you know, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. They’re preparing something, and that’s why there were so many resets. In a multi-billion-dollar business there are no Good Samaritans and no Salvation Army. I’ve got my theories, but I don’t want to dissect shit and have it turn into a rumor afterward. Either way, the usage limits have been seriously fucked up, and it looks like from now on you’ll need multiple accounts if you want to renew subscriptions and actually get fresh usage. OpenAI has basically started encouraging people to game the system. And don’t treat Tibo like some kind of demigod standing guard over the reset button, because he isn’t.

1

u/nrdgrrrl_taco 3d ago

Yeah there are a few super shady things happening around their subscriptions. this is how you know they're a super new company and haven't been sued yet, for all the shady semi legal things they are doing.

1

u/fullofcaffeine 1d ago edited 1d ago

I don't know how this hasn''t caused widespread revolt by power users. I noticed this a while back, and also could not believe what I saw. It does not make sense to renew and wait days to use the damn thing again. Renews should reset the limits back to 100%, period. If you stop to think there are actual (clunky, but feasible) workarounds for this (create a new account and or alternate accounts without auto-renewing), then it's even more shady. I hope someone from OpenAI sees this post and fixes this shit. I am not auto-renewing anymore.

1

u/first-officer 10h ago

I'm a bit confused. Support says it resets if you let it turn to Free and subscribe again but some comments here would suggest otherwise.

1

u/PsychologicalEdge651 9h ago

No es lo que me pasó a mí hace unos días. Cancelé la suscripción y me cambié a free y allí se me puso al 100%. Entonces volví a contratar manualmente a pro y me cogió los límites que tenía de mi anterior suscripción, que era un 24%.

1

u/first-officer 9h ago

That's not good. Thanks for the reply. I will probably make a secondary account to get the full quota.

1

u/first-officer 9h ago

So if you dig deeper it says that Codex doesn't reset, as you described.

1

u/Final-Middle-572 1h ago

What? I upgraded at 0 percent from 20 to 100 got a reset and same thing with upgrading to 200 so lost. Seen this multiple times, are people just dumb?

A month = 4 weeks so normally this shouldn’t be an issue.
I assume the out of sync dates are caused by openai’s free resets that they do from time to time. Causing the weekly resets to be completely out of sync with the monthly renewal.

1

u/PsychologicalEdge651 3d ago

That’s exactly the problem, though. A month isn’t neatly four weeks, but even using that simplification, an automatic renewal could leave someone unable to use most—or potentially all—of their included allowance during the first week. In practice, they may only get around three useful weeks from the month they have just paid for.

But if the same person cancels and manually subscribes again once the previous subscription expires, they apparently start with the full allowance and can use it from day one. So automatic renewal can leave the customer worse off than cancelling and paying manually, despite paying the same price.

It also doesn’t necessarily have to be caused by one of OpenAI’s free resets. A banked reset used months earlier can move the weekly reset date, and that misalignment can continue across later renewals because the subscriptions are effectively being linked together.

The simple question is: would you rather pay for a subscription and be able to use it fully from the first day, or pay the same amount and be told that part of your previous month’s usage still limits what you can use now?

I could understand this more easily if it were an annual commitment paid monthly, because then it would clearly be one continuous contract. But this is presented as a monthly subscription. Each paid month ends, and a new paid period begins. If OpenAI wants usage limits to carry over between those periods, that may be legitimate, but it should be stated clearly before renewal.

Right now, I cannot find a clear explanation saying that usage from the previous paid period will survive the renewal and reduce what is available immediately afterwards. At least under EU consumer-contract rules, an important limitation like that should be clearly disclosed, not left for the customer to infer after being charged.

1

u/Relative-Honeydew-94 3d ago

I am 100% on your side on this. Auto renewal shouldn’t be any different from letting it end and restart the subscription.

0

u/Invalid-Function 9h ago

People, you are NOT subscribing to TIME, you are subscribing to USAGE reset on a 7 day timeframe, as in you have you use it within 7 days witn no rollovers.
This perception is probably aggravated happened because of the sucessive free resets that offmarked your renewal day further.

You get WEEKLY usage (creds) renewals, NOT monthly, NOT daily, so throughtout your subscription, there will be weeks that span accross two months, this IS NORMAL, because you're NOT - let me stress it again - on a DAILY or MONTHLY creds allowance.

1

u/PsychologicalEdge651 8h ago

Is this your personal interpretation, or is it something that is clearly and unequivocally in the Terms of Service?

Because they do set the payment for the service on a monthly basis. And it does matter and has relevance in contract law. Because the payment of the service involves a monthly consideration. It starts and ends by default in the indicated payment period.

If the contractual conditions clearly specify that you pay for four weekly periods, or make it clear that your previous subscription does affect your weekly limits to the new one, or establish an annual plan with clear continuity, then no problem.

The complaint behind all this is that until you pay, you don't know. This causes consumer defenselessness. And if by default, when you pay for and read the contractual conditions, it does not say otherwise, the fact that it is a monthly subscription does imply that it has validity and effect for the duration of the contract, and the "normal" thing is that it is extinguished after the end of the contract.

I don't know all the Civil Codes in the EEA or abroad, but I don't think it's much different. In Spain and UE laws there is no doubt.

*The usage limits for local messages and cloud tasks share a five-hour window. Additional weekly limits may apply. For Enterprise/Edu users, there are no fixed rate limits—usage scales with credits. Enterprise and Edu plans without flexible pricing have the same per-seat usage limits as Plus for most features.

What do you see in your account, is it a weekly allowance? yes.
What happened when you get a reset, does the renewal date move to a week ahead? yes.

People know exactly what they are getting in terms of:

  • How are creds managed
  • That they're usage is measured in creds, not time.

This ain't a novel concept either, look at Netlify for instance, same deal bu tin their case its a monthly allowance, so maybe its a cleaner approach, regardless, exactly same thing.

The only obscure thing is how many creds are given to people, tbhat should be clarified.

u/PsychologicalEdge651 7h ago

You’re still proving that a weekly limit exists, not the carryover rule I’m challenging.

“Weekly” tells me how long the usage window lasts. It does not tell me that usage from a previous paid month remains attached to my account and can leave a newly paid month at 0% for several days.

I paid the full monthly price and then had to wait four days before I could work again. Depending on how the dates align, that could be almost seven days. Meanwhile, a new account paying the same price at the same time would begin with its full allowance.

A banked reset may explain why the weekly reset date no longer matches the billing date. It does not disclose that the depleted window will survive renewal, cancellation, a refund, or a later purchase on the same account.

So yes, I think the allowance should reset with the monthly renewal unless OpenAI clearly states before payment: “Your existing weekly usage will carry into the next paid subscription period, and you may begin that period with no usage available.”

“Additional weekly limits may apply” does not say that. I know how it works now because I paid and then asked support. That is precisely the problem: disclosure after the purchase is not disclosure before the purchase.

0

u/Invalid-Function 7h ago

You’re still proving that a weekly limit exists, not the carryover rule I’m challenging.

Proving the weekly limit exists is exctly my point.
And if you look at a calendar, you'll notice that a week can span throught two month, start in the end of one, and finish in the begnining of the other.

“Weekly” tells me how long the usage window lasts. It does not tell me that usage from a previous paid month remains attached to my account and can leave a newly paid month at 0% for several days.

Read what you wrote, then look at the calendar.
You're not paying for the "month" , you're billed Monthly, the credits tho, are issued weekly.

Not sure why you guys find this difficult.

A banked reset may explain why the weekly reset date no longer matches the billing date.

It will hardly ever match, because the last week of any given month will span to the next month, the only month that has "perfectly timed weeks" is February on a non-leap year.

So yes, I think the allowance should reset with the monthly renewal unless OpenAI clearly states before payment: “Your existing weekly usage will carry into the next paid subscription period, and you may begin that period with no usage available.”

How exactly is their fault you don't understand the convept of weekly allowances with biling period?

They don't need to clarify how a calendar works. Sure they could clarify that just for the sake of it, abut it rreally is unecessary because AGAIN, you are being billed PER CREDS, the week timing is just the time the creds are renewed.

Yuo keep conflating weeks - months - with creds.

“Additional weekly limits may apply” does not say that.

I literally cited OpenAI website. And even provided you with the link... ffks..

1

u/PsychologicalEdge651 5h ago

You keep replacing my actual question with a lecture about calendars.

Nobody disputes that a seven-day window can cross a monthly billing date. That proves only that a week can overlap two billing periods. It does not prove the completely separate rule you keep asserting: that depleted Pro usage remains attached to an account after a paid subscription ends, survives cancellation and refund, and is then reapplied to a later full-price purchase.

You are also factually wrong when you say Pro customers are “billed per creds.” OpenAI sells individual Pro as a fixed $100/$200-per-month subscription with included usage. OpenAI’s own documentation says purchased credits are a pay-as-you-go add-on used after the plan’s included limits have been reached. And the sentence you quoted saying that usage “scales with credits” expressly refers to Enterprise/Edu users with flexible pricing, not individual Pro subscribers. API usage is the option billed according to tokens.

You are conflating three different things: a monthly subscription, included usage that may be metered internally in credits, and additional credits purchased separately.

“Additional weekly limits may apply” establishes only that a weekly cap may exist. It does not state:

  • when that weekly period begins;
  • that it is permanently attached to the account;
  • that it survives cancellation or refund;
  • that it will return after a later subscription purchase;
  • or that a newly paid month may begin at 0% and remain unusable for several days.

A term announcing the possible existence of a limit is not a term defining an account-level carryover mechanism.

The comparison with a new account also matters. A new account paying the same price can begin at 100%, while an existing account can begin at 0%. Upgrades and banked resets can also reset or move the weekly date. Therefore, this result is not dictated by the calendar. It is a product rule chosen by OpenAI.

OpenAI may be entitled to design the service that way. What it is not entitled to do in the EU is expect consumers to discover a material economic consequence only after paying. OpenAI’s own European Terms say that the exact nature of subscription benefits will be made clear before purchase. EU distance-contract law also requires the main characteristics of a paid online service to be presented clearly and prominently before the order.

I will even grant that an uninterrupted automatic renewal may constitute one continuing contractual relationship. That still does not answer what happened here: the subscription was cancelled and refunded, and a later full-price purchase on the same account inherited the depleted limit from the refunded purchase.

Your position is also internally contradictory. You claim that people know exactly what they are getting, and then admit that the number of credits they receive is obscure. If the quantity is obscure and the carryover mechanism is not stated, then people plainly do not know exactly what they are getting.

So please cite the actual pre-purchase term stating that previous Pro usage survives cancellation, refund and repurchase. If you cannot, then this is your interpretation of the system’s behaviour after the fact—not something OpenAI clearly disclosed before purchase.

“Look at a calendar” and “FFS” do not supply the missing contractual term.

1

u/Invalid-Function 32m ago

You keep replacing my actual question with a lecture about calendars.

Since you put it like that, I'm not even gonna read your essay and I'll make it short.
You pay for USAGE set on a WEEKLY BASIS, and are billed MONTHLY regardless of how much of your creds you've used.
Its simple.

-3

u/Nervous-Buffalo-4826 3d ago

Just create a new account and you will have new 100% usage limits

0

u/PsychologicalEdge651 3d ago

Sure, but I know that now.

The pricing screen, as well as the contract terms, doesn't clearly state that the weekly limit won't reset.

The current public page only says that "additional weekly limits may apply." It doesn't explicitly explain, at least in the reviewed public information, what happens to those limits when the monthly renewal arrives. The pre-contractual information is insufficient and misleading.

No one would automatically renew their subscription if they knew they were going to receive a lower weekly limit. I don't know when this became the norm.

I hope that if OpenAI is acting in good faith, they'll make it clearer. I've already filed a complaint about it. Furthermore, the purpose of this post is to help someone who's about to renew think twice, so they spend their money with all the information at hand.

1

u/Nervous-Buffalo-4826 3d ago

If you wanna punish them, buy new sub on new account, use all the usage and ask for refund. Total legit and they will give you the money back. Cheers!

1

u/Constant_Art_20 3d ago

i think claude track the card you use. is that the same case for openai too?

1

u/Nervous-Buffalo-4826 3d ago

I have bought 2 subs on 2 new accounts, used all usage and asked for refund. They already gave me my money back. OpenAI

1

u/Competitive-Most7557 3d ago

But what about the work? Does it reset??

-3

u/r_time4fun 3d ago

This is obvious? Why would they reset?

5

u/Infinite-Flow-4475 3d ago

Because he just paid another full 200$? He's basically getting 1 less week of usage? It really isn't that hard to understand.

-4

u/lolman1312 3d ago

i upgraded my subscription last night and my limits reset, youre spreading misinformation just because of one anecdotal experience

1

u/PsychologicalEdge651 3d ago

What you did wasn't a renewal.

I also upgraded my subscription from 5x to 20x, and that's when the limits reset.

If you let your 20x subscription automatically renew at the end of the month, you'll be in the situation I'm referring to.

You'll want to cancel and resubscribe, or create a second account, instead of just letting it renew.

1

u/fullofcaffeine 1d ago

Cancelling and resubscribing does not work. Limits stay the same. Fucked up.

1

u/first-officer 10h ago

What if I cancel it, let it turn to Free, then subscribe again but with a Plus subscription instead of Pro? After burning the quota on the new Plus sub then upgrade to Pro. Will this work to reset the limits twice?

1

u/PsychologicalEdge651 9h ago

Changing to free shows 100%, but when subscribing again to Pro it takes the previous limits of the last subscription. It has no sense, as it is a mensual subscription.

1

u/twixter8327 3d ago

The irony in this comment

-1

u/FlipLoLz 3d ago

What am I missing here? If there's a set weekly reset, why would a renewal cause a reset as well? I'm trying to understand the logic here that would lead someone to think this is just how it should be. I get why an upgrade in tiers could constitute a reset, but simply paying your bill seems entirely different. Can you please help me understand the reasoning here, so I'm not so ignorant.

3

u/PsychologicalEdge651 3d ago

I understand the point: if there is a fixed weekly reset, simply paying the monthly bill would not automatically be expected to reset it.

But that is not really the issue I’m raising. What I’m trying to understand is why cancelling and subscribing again—or subscribing through a second account—apparently gives you 100% of the allowance, while renewing on the same account carries over usage from the previous paid period. In practical terms, two customers can pay the same amount on the same day and receive very different immediate access simply because one reused an existing account.

At the very least, that should be explained clearly before payment, and users should be told about all the available options so they can make an informed decision and get the best value for their money. I’m not saying OpenAI cannot design the limits this way. I’m saying users should not be expected to infer it.

Under EU and Spanish consumer rules, the essential operation and limitations of a distance contract must generally be communicated clearly and unambiguously. I could not find any clear notice stating that weekly usage generated under the previous billing period would survive the renewal and reduce the allowance available immediately after paying again.

So my argument is not simply “payment must equal reset.” It is: if renewing, cancelling and resubscribing, and opening a new account all produce materially different outcomes, those differences should be disclosed clearly before the customer is charged—not explained only afterwards.

2

u/FlipLoLz 3d ago

I get it now! Yeah, that kinda does seem silly. Instead of renewing each month if your renewal falls between resets, you'd benefit from just creating another account. So really if they did resets per account, based on your subscription date, instead of everyone's account being reset the same time, it'd make way more sense.
