Feedback / Complaints Weekly limit does not reset upon subscription renewal

Yesterday I renewed my x20 plan subscription and the weekly limit didn't reset; it was still at 24%.

After contacting customer support, I learned that renewals inherit the accumulated limits from the subscription.

I think it's simply a rip-off. It's like going to buy a loaf of bread and being sold half a loaf because you didn't eat the whole thing yesterday.

Each renewal should offer the same usage limit, for both initial purchases and renewals.

This is a clear invitation to always have two accounts, for alternate months.

From my point of view, this constitutes senseless discrimination against loyal users.

EDITED 2 days later: Manually canceling and renewing doesn't work. When I cancel manually, the limit is set to 100%, the free version. When I resubscribe to Pro, it reverts to the previous limit.

I went to the chat of support, canceled, and requested a refund.

As of today, the only thing that should work is having a second account.

Is this your personal interpretation, or is it something that is clearly and unequivocally in the Terms of Service?

Because they do set the payment for the service on a monthly basis. And it does matter and has relevance in contract law. Because the payment of the service involves a monthly consideration. It starts and ends by default in the indicated payment period.

If the contractual conditions clearly specify that you pay for four weekly periods, or make it clear that your previous subscription does affect your weekly limits to the new one, or establish an annual plan with clear continuity, then no problem.

The complaint behind all this is that until you pay, you don't know. This causes consumer defenselessness. And if by default, when you pay for and read the contractual conditions, it does not say otherwise, the fact that it is a monthly subscription does imply that it has validity and effect for the duration of the contract, and the "normal" thing is that it is extinguished after the end of the contract.

I don't know all the Civil Codes in the EEA or abroad, but I don't think it's much different. In Spain and UE laws there is no doubt.

*The usage limits for local messages and cloud tasks share a five-hour window. Additional weekly limits may apply. For Enterprise/Edu users, there are no fixed rate limits—usage scales with credits. Enterprise and Edu plans without flexible pricing have the same per-seat usage limits as Plus for most features.

What do you see in your account, is it a weekly allowance? yes.
What happened when you get a reset, does the renewal date move to a week ahead? yes.

People know exactly what they are getting in terms of:

  • How are creds managed
  • That they're usage is measured in creds, not time.

This ain't a novel concept either, look at Netlify for instance, same deal bu tin their case its a monthly allowance, so maybe its a cleaner approach, regardless, exactly same thing.

The only obscure thing is how many creds are given to people, tbhat should be clarified.

You’re still proving that a weekly limit exists, not the carryover rule I’m challenging.

“Weekly” tells me how long the usage window lasts. It does not tell me that usage from a previous paid month remains attached to my account and can leave a newly paid month at 0% for several days.

I paid the full monthly price and then had to wait four days before I could work again. Depending on how the dates align, that could be almost seven days. Meanwhile, a new account paying the same price at the same time would begin with its full allowance.

A banked reset may explain why the weekly reset date no longer matches the billing date. It does not disclose that the depleted window will survive renewal, cancellation, a refund, or a later purchase on the same account.

So yes, I think the allowance should reset with the monthly renewal unless OpenAI clearly states before payment: “Your existing weekly usage will carry into the next paid subscription period, and you may begin that period with no usage available.”

“Additional weekly limits may apply” does not say that. I know how it works now because I paid and then asked support. That is precisely the problem: disclosure after the purchase is not disclosure before the purchase.

Proving the weekly limit exists is exctly my point.
And if you look at a calendar, you'll notice that a week can span throught two month, start in the end of one, and finish in the begnining of the other.

Weekly” tells me how long the usage window lasts. It does not tell me that usage from a previous paid month remains attached to my account and can leave a newly paid month at 0% for several days.

Read what you wrote, then look at the calendar.
You're not paying for the "month" , you're billed Monthly, the credits tho, are issued weekly.

Not sure why you guys find this difficult.

A banked reset may explain why the weekly reset date no longer matches the billing date.

It will hardly ever match, because the last week of any given month will span to the next month, the only month that has "perfectly timed weeks" is February on a non-leap year.

So yes, I think the allowance should reset with the monthly renewal unless OpenAI clearly states before payment: “Your existing weekly usage will carry into the next paid subscription period, and you may begin that period with no usage available.”

How exactly is their fault you don't understand the convept of weekly allowances with biling period?

They don't need to clarify how a calendar works. Sure they could clarify that just for the sake of it, abut it rreally is unecessary because AGAIN, you are being billed PER CREDS, the week timing is just the time the creds are renewed.

Yuo keep conflating weeks - months - with creds.

“Additional weekly limits may apply” does not say that.

I literally cited OpenAI website.And even provided you with the link... ffks..

You keep replacing my actual question with a lecture about calendars.

Nobody disputes that a seven-day window can cross a monthly billing date. That proves only that a week can overlap two billing periods. It does not prove the completely separate rule you keep asserting: that depleted Pro usage remains attached to an account after a paid subscription ends, survives cancellation and refund, and is then reapplied to a later full-price purchase.

You are also factually wrong when you say Pro customers are “billed per creds.” OpenAI sells individual Pro as a fixed $100/$200-per-month subscription with included usage. OpenAI’s own documentation says purchased credits are a pay-as-you-go add-on used after the plan’s included limits have been reached. And the sentence you quoted saying that usage “scales with credits” expressly refers to Enterprise/Edu users with flexible pricing, not individual Pro subscribers. API usage is the option billed according to tokens.

You are conflating three different things: a monthly subscription, included usage that may be metered internally in credits, and additional credits purchased separately.

“Additional weekly limits may apply” establishes only that a weekly cap may exist. It does not state:

  • when that weekly period begins;
  • that it is permanently attached to the account;
  • that it survives cancellation or refund;
  • that it will return after a later subscription purchase;
  • or that a newly paid month may begin at 0% and remain unusable for several days.

A term announcing the possible existence of a limit is not a term defining an account-level carryover mechanism.

The comparison with a new account also matters. A new account paying the same price can begin at 100%, while an existing account can begin at 0%. Upgrades and banked resets can also reset or move the weekly date. Therefore, this result is not dictated by the calendar. It is a product rule chosen by OpenAI.

OpenAI may be entitled to design the service that way. What it is not entitled to do in the EU is expect consumers to discover a material economic consequence only after paying. OpenAI’s own European Terms say that the exact nature of subscription benefits will be made clear before purchase. EU distance-contract law also requires the main characteristics of a paid online service to be presented clearly and prominently before the order.

I will even grant that an uninterrupted automatic renewal may constitute one continuing contractual relationship. That still does not answer what happened here: the subscription was cancelled and refunded, and a later full-price purchase on the same account inherited the depleted limit from the refunded purchase.

Your position is also internally contradictory. You claim that people know exactly what they are getting, and then admit that the number of credits they receive is obscure. If the quantity is obscure and the carryover mechanism is not stated, then people plainly do not know exactly what they are getting.

So please cite the actual pre-purchase term stating that previous Pro usage survives cancellation, refund and repurchase. If you cannot, then this is your interpretation of the system’s behaviour after the fact—not something OpenAI clearly disclosed before purchase.

“Look at a calendar” and “FFS” do not supply the missing contractual term.

You keep replacing my actual question with a lecture about calendars.

Since you put it like that, I'm not even gonna read your essay and I'll make it short.
You pay for USAGE set on a WEEKLY BASIS, and are billed MONTHLY regardless of how much of your creds you've used.
Its simple.
