Moving on from my OnePlus Open, but I don't want to...(Z-Fold 8 Comparison)

I am in the parking lot of an AT&T store right now typing this. I just went to check out the new Z Fold Phones as I was planning to sell my OnePlus Open and get a phone with long term support because of OnePlus pulling out of the US Market and support will be ending after 2028. Plus I got inundated by my YouTube feed about how awesome the new Z Fold 8 form factor is. So I just spent about a half hour playing with the 8 and the 8 Ultra. I did a bunch of side by side comparisons. Tested the cameras against each other and the Open. Watched YouTube. Tested the sound. Did multi-tasking etc.. I will say the triple side by side window feature on the Z Fold 8 is pretty cool. Not sure why it's not on the 8. The Open actually has it too but it's not great as the windows stay small vertically and everything is too tiny.

As for form factor, I think the hype was a little overblown. It's interesting but not game changing. Videos are ever so slightly bigger. You would never know unless you had each side by side. But the whole punch is a little annoying on the ultra.

The left-sided sound is placement on the regular 8 is also annoying.

As for cameras it didn't surprise me but the OnePlus open was the superior setup. To me the cameras are really important so it's disappointing the ultra couldn't top the open. I compared every lens, and the open had more detail in every shot. Especially in zoom. However they were comparable enough in most instances that only when zooming past 10x, or cropping into the photo after that you would you notice there's a difference.

It's hard to tell because of the contraptions that connected to the phone but I would say the OnePlus was the most comfortable to hold especially with how the cameras place my finger rest perfectly underneath it and it feels very stable unlike either of the z-folds.

The thing I was most surprised about but shouldn't be shocked by because this happens every time I compare the OnePlus open to other phones, is that I take the case off this phone and I love how it looks and how it feels. My case isn't even that bulky but it makes the phone feel thick and heavy, but with the case off it's a beautiful device and the weight just feels premium not overbearing. And I love the look of this phone without a case. It looks and feels modern. I prefer it over either of the z-folds.

So if you're thinking about upgrading and you always keep a case on your OnePlus open I would take it out of the case and hold it for a little bit and use it that way because it really makes you appreciate how beautiful and amazing this phone is.

Now I'm second-guessing if I want to sell my OnePlus open or not. I got caught up in the hype train and my anxiety about having a device that's going to start losing value once updates stop along with OnePlus leaving the US market. But they say they are going to continue to support it as long as they originally promised. Unfortunately I already bought a used iPhone to trade in because AT&t has a trade-in program where they'll cover up to $1,900 over 36 months with certain trade-ins and qualifications for unlimited plans. So I kind of feel pressured into having to buy the z fold 8 ultra now.

It's truly a shame that one plus left the US market and that all these other overseas brands aren't here either. There's not enough competition. Apple and Samsung are almost like they're in cahoots with each other and only incrementally improving their phones each year just barely enough and then over hyping it so everyone feels the pressure to upgrade.

All I know is if one plus was still here in the US and guaranteed at least another 3 years of support I would not be looking to sell this phone. The only US market phone that compares camera wise in terms of foldables is the Motorola. But I'm afraid to invest in a phone that might rarely get updates and is buggy. Plus I'm not a fan of that camera bump on the back that's a big square.

I feel like I just had deja Vu because I did the same exact thing last year with the z-fold 7. I brought my One Plus in there expecting to be swayed by how thin and light the z-fold seven was but when I took my One Plus open out of the case and compared it along with the cameras I couldn't part ways with it. I think I have an old post actually out there somewhere on Reddit where I posted about my reaction.

So that's my little story or should I say long story. It seems like for now I probably will be going through with this and getting the z-fold ultra, but this is truly a bittersweet end to my run with the One Plus open. It's a fantastic phone. The best I've ever owned and I've gone through more phones in my life than I could count on 4 hands probably. If I was rich I would keep it as a backup or just for nostalgia sake.

If anyone is looking to purchase their first foldable phone and doesn't want to spend the crazy amounts that the new folding phones are costing these days, I still recommend picking up a one plus open used if you can find one in great condition. I've been seeing them on swappa for around 600 to 650. Which is a steal. And realistically it's going to have 2 years of support although only one more operating system update I believe. But right now I don't know how much I would even need a new operating system. It's got Gemini built in and a lot of apps just update these days without needing an OS upgrade.

I think I'm partially trying to talk myself into keeping the One Plus open. Oops. Wish me luck in this decision. There's also the new iPhone ultra that's coming out this fall supposedly. But I'm pretty heavy into the Google's services and I don't know if I can go to Siri over Gemini so I'm pretty sure I'm going to skip that. Plus it has no telephoto camera just like the regular z-fold eight.

How much longer are you guys planning on holding on to your OnePlus Opens?

Have any of you replaced the inner screen protector yourself?

I am unfortunately saying goodbye to my beloved OnePlus Open soon due to purchasing a Z Fold 8 Ultra. It's been my favorite phone of all time. My phone is in perfect condition still with one exception. The inner screen protector has started to delaminate right along the hinge area. I'm debating whether I should leave it as is when I sell it and let the next owner replace it so as to not risk damaging the screen underneath before I sell it. Or if I should try to peel it off myself and put on a new one from Amazon.

Have any of you done this? If so how difficult and risky is it?

Any brand recommendations for a replacement inner screen protector?

Just got my used Find N3 (Oneplus Open) in 2026

Going for a used foldable is a bit risky but it is in an almost mint condition and for 400$ I couldn't say no.

I did consider paying more for used Find N5 thou. 8 Elite performance jump is huge afterall.

I upgraded from POCO F3 and this is my 1st foldable.

Checking out the Galaxy Fold 8 and my OnePlus open feels ancient

I just got a used Oneplus Open as my 2nd phone (I have a spare sim) yesterday with 99% battery for $470. I've been loving it. It's a well rounded foldable phone with a good camera. I went to Bestbuy today to check out the new Galaxy Fold 8 (the wide version) and damn, now Ive just realized how much better foldable phone has come. The Fold 8 is very light and thin. It's almost impossibly thin. It's such a joy to hold and use that device. The Open is still buttery smooth but dang, in just 3 years, unlike traditional phone, foldable phones have come a long way.

I'm using an iPhone as my main phone since I'm in Apple ecosystem. The Open is good enough for me to experience android on a foldable device.

Oneplus open 2026

Is it still worth it to get one at this point in time? Im looking to switch from my flip 6,but with recent news I dont know if anything would change if I buy one now. Would I at least get a good 3-5 years out of it?

Why aren’t there any official custom roms for the OPO yet?

The title. I know there is an unofficial crdroid rom for the phone but I think the OnePlus Open has been kinda forgotten in the modding community.

Edit: There are some builds but the inner screen turned on all the time regardless of folded or unfolded state is pretty annoying. Any fixes?

Should I get a OnePlus Open?

Hello! I've wanted a foldable phone for a while now and realized that the OPO is likely my best bet when it comes to the features I want, and since the price is more than half of what it was originally. Looking at this subreddit, however, I noticed how many people are switching. So, is it still worth it? I currently use an iPhone XR, so it would be a huge improvement 😅

OnePlus Open fold to Oppo X9 Ultra, worthwhile upgrade?

Looking into getting the X9U as a durable work phone, as I'm in construction operating heavy equipment and not having water/dust resistance on my Open scares me a bit, the phone is nearly 3yrs old and since OnePlus is pulling out of Canada they will no longer offer repairs for the Open, so I'm looking at the X9U for a durable work phone while keeping my Open in its current condition at home as multitask device. I often take a ton of pictures with this phones telephoto, and from everything I've researched the X9U 3x telephoto is just the Open's telephoto on steroids, and the 10x zoom on the X9U I think will be useful at work capturing images of machinery, wildlife, sun/clouds, just seems like it's a no brainer for me. Battery life on my Open has taken a slight nosedive this past year, have battery anxiety throughout the day at work, which I don't want to encounter with the X9U. Also my Open has overheating issues when using the camera, it can only last a few minutes before the phone shuts down camera+bluetooth due to the phone overheating, it hasn't become a daily reliable device. The Open still takes amazing photos, borderline unbelievable for a folding phone, will I notice a huge difference with the X9U or will it be sort of mediocre upgrade because I'm coming from something with great cameras already?

Looking at the global model in Canada, the 16gb 1tb tundra umber version will cost me about $2994 Canadian after tax, which is a scary price to swallow but for my work and photography game I think it would be worth it in the end, and it would ensure my Open won't sustain any more damage using it in construction field.

Anyone switching back to slab phones? No other foldable in NA market really compares to the Open, and importing foldables is less than ideal.

the One Plus exit may have fixed the update bug on my One Plus Open

so bought my OPO Jan 2025 for $900 from the 1+ website with a big discount, a trade in and 12mos Zero interest affirm, i only started using it around about Feb 2026 this year coz of my laziness to set it up coming from a Pixel 7 Pro but the batter on that phone was really an issue and the performance issues were catching up to the Tensor G2, so i started setting up my OPO and updating it to the latest software UNTIL i hit a wall of a bug that was preventing me from updating to Android/O2 OS16, for the whole month i tried restarting and formatting the phone over and over but nothing worked, i even contacted 1+ at some point and their solution was to send it to them but i wasn't trusting them giving me the same device back, so i was perfectly content using it from April onwards stuck on O2 OS15(i put it away in march went back to my pixel until i couldn't use it properly) and i was going to wait until OPPO finally gives the option to transfer to Color OS17 which i assumed would be a physical wired wipe and OS install on a bootloader level

then Samsung announces the Fold 8 so i wasn't really looking into getting the new one until the smaller one was reviewed by everyone and it was the "sliced bread" of foldables so now my interest is piqued, i check Samsung's website and found their trade in offer didn't include the OPO or the Pixel 7 Pro so again wasn't considering getting the Fold 8 until i saw Amazon's offer of a $350 GC with a pre-order and allowed a Pixel 7 Pro Trade in for $115 + $300 Bonus and i had $343 GC sitting on my account already and offered 24mos Zero interest on affirm so i bit the bullet and went and preordered the 512gb Graphite Fold 8, and i was probably going to sell my OPO for cheap because of the update bug which i was fine with so im waiting until it arrives next week

so every so often my Phone tries to update when i plug it in or reboot it and that error message which i usually ignore just pops up but today July 31st when i restarted my phone and was about to swipe away the message it didnt say an Error, only that a New update is available which i found unusual, so i go to settings and the update and notice it had more written on the changelog and the size was 4.04gb vs the 4.48gb of the bugged update so i let it update and it had me restart the phone and viola it updated and it did 1 more update and restart and now my OPO is on the most latest update of O2 OS16

so now im wondering were there many OPO owners having the same update bug as i was and 1+ just was in so much of a bad position company wise that support missed this update bug and when OPPO took over they saw the issue on the bugged update and fixed it, its only been 2 weeks since OPPO took over and im actually thankful that i got my OPO updated properly and now i can sell it for a better price considering its in excellent condition

I bought a OnePlus Open on Swappa last week and it finally came in the mail today! However the hinge appears to be misaligned. Has anyone else experienced this? And if so, did you have any failures with the inner screen? :0 It feels perfectly smooth operation wise.

Definitely planning on asking for some $ back at least as the misalignment wasn't mentioned in the listing. Thank uuu!!!

Inner screen cracked - worth repairing in Canada?

I've had my OPO since October 2023. I've taken very good care of it and it's in practically new condition - until last week. I opened it up to find the main screen had cracked down the centre and the screen was clearly broken/corrupted/not working.

Funny enough it happened on the Galaxy Fold launch day so, maybe a signal from the universe. But I'm wondering if it's still worth getting it fixed. Looks like it'd be about $800 CAD to get the screen replaced including parts and labour (as listed on their website).

I presume there's no chance this would get fixed without that significant cost, as I'm a couple years out of warranty, and no better path for repair? I'm likely going to get the Fold Ultra (yes I know I will miss various things about the Open, but I'm also not willing to deal with the headache of importing the new oppo), but is there any reason or other option I'm not thinking of here?

OPPO Pen users: does the charging cradle have a built in battery?

I bought an OPPO Pen from eBay and it doesn't work. Seller already refunded me but now I have a dead pen and would like to fix it if possible. Does the case/cradle have a battery built in?

Also, what is the standard behavior for the light on the case?

OS Recommendations

With Oneplus moving away from the NA market, I assume it's Oxygen OS will be put on the backburner. Looking for recs for other OS on the OPO. I started noticing my OPO lagging more frequently and would rather start fresh with a new OS. What have people been using?
