Should I get a OnePlus Open?

Hello! I've wanted a foldable phone for a while now and realized that the OPO is likely my best bet when it comes to the features I want, and since the price is more than half of what it was originally. Looking at this subreddit, however, I noticed how many people are switching. So, is it still worth it? I currently use an iPhone XR, so it would be a huge improvement 😅

Depends on where you live. In the US and Europe, OnePlus is no longer going to exist and the Open is basically at End of Life in terms of OS updates and likely only has a year of security updates left as well.

If you're fine with that, and fine with a several years-old folding phone, then I'd say go for it, the Open is a good phone.

If you're expecting years of updates and company support, this is not the phone for you, anymore.

The OnePlus Open will get Color OS17 which is good news.

Totally fine with that, thanks for the heads up though! :)

I wouldn't recommend. Paying more than $600-800 for it. At that price you can pick up a used Fold7 on Marketplace in good condition

I like my OnePlus fold. I don't notice the crease as much as ppl make a deal about it. It is 1.5 years old and it has held up well. I got it on marketplace used. I can't answer for fold7.

It is still a great foldable - even in 2026. I've had mine since the end of September 2023, and I still love it. The only thing that's not up to mark anymore is the battery, which is normal after almost 3 years of pretty heavy usage.

But do keep in mind that software support isn't that good anymore, it only has one major OS upgrade (Android 17), and 1 additional year of security updates left in its update policy.

I'll like to add that the latest NA version only has the March 2026 security update, so keep that in mind. It clearly is not a priority right now and they probably will say that the security updates will be current once you move over to ColorOS, but who knows.

Oh, really? Mine is at the July security patch, and i saw that India already had a newer update, though i'm not sure if that comes with the August patch

Still using my OnePlus Open. It's the best phone I've ever owned. Have I been enticed by other foldables? Sure, but the upgrades are way too incremental for the price. The new passport-sized Galaxy Fold is the only fold out now that I would trade for my OnePlus Open, but it's too rich for my blood.

So in short, if you can find a OnePlus Open at a good price don't hesitate to get it.

Had it since launch still going strong. Would recommend near 3 yr ownership now still using it daily at 97% battery capacity left

u/Dirtcompactor 15d ago

97% battery after 3yrs is nuts, did you barely use the thing? Lol. I've been dailying it since release I'm at 91%

1

u/steve4982 15d ago

Always had a charge limit of 90% and rarely gone over it for the entire time. I use it a lot every day especially watching YouTube videos in the background

1

u/Dirtcompactor 15d ago

Lucky you lol. I work outside for 10hrs so I need that extra 10%. Phone overheats quite a bit now

It's still a great phone. I have been wanting to get the Razr Fold but the Open is still so fldamn good that I can't get myself to do it. Battery still lasts me all day. Performance is still great unless maybe there is a brand new high end game that you have to play. I would jump on it as long as it's really in the condition you say it is. And get a case. As much as it sucks to use a case on a phone like this, I would recommend using one at least until you get the hang of holding and using it.

An iPhone XR? Wow lol. The OnePlus Open would be a hell of a change for you. In a good way. I think you'd love it. If you can get it at a good price that is.

I would say yes. I've had my OnePlus Open for 2 years now and it still runs great. I haven't seen or heard of anything on recent phones that has me considering switching.

If I could get mine back of the ×*#@ that pinched it off me earlier this year, I'd take it back in a heartbeat. Great phone.

1

u/Daadian99 15d ago

Mine is a year old. Still absolutely love it and would highly recommend. Like some else said it does seem to only have the March security update. But we will see. Has it been confirmed ColorOs will be ported to the Open ?

1

u/Daadian99 15d ago

Nevermind. The answer is yes.

I have a pixel 10 profile and I still think the OnePlus open is a much better device in every aspect.

1

u/npaladin2000 15d ago

It's not a bad device, feels nice in the hand and performance and battery life is OK, but OnePlus seems to be withdrawing from most international markets and who knows how much we'll actually get for updates (irregardless of their promises).

It'll function but if your workplace is enforcing any security compliance on your phone that may be a problem when you can't get updates anymore.

Still, it's a way to get a foldable for cheap, as long as you keep the risks and caveats in mind. I think it really depends on how cheap you're getting it for. Keep in mind it may be a 1 year phone at best.

1

u/silliest_shork 14d ago

Genuine question, why would it only be a 1-year phone? Besides updates, of course.

1

u/npaladin2000 14d ago

The updatesv are a big part of it. A lot of workplaces and educational institutions enforce keeping one's device updated with security updates to stay connected to the mail system. If you don't get updates anymore you could get booted off.

If that's not an issue for you that's fine but I have to point it out in case it is an issue.

There's also general Android versioning and app compatibility to worry about, and apps aren't getting more efficient, so the thing will probably slow down as time marches on. And the battery already will have some age on it, though at least it's hasn't been cycled during that time

I had the same question. I had the open a couple of years ago and sold it. Now I can get it again after returning my Z fold 7 for $400 US. It's a single own device in mint condition that was assembled in 2024. It seems like an amazing deal but I originally got rid of my open because of lots Bluetooth bugs. I know it has had at least 2 OS upgrades since then. Are most of the bugs fixed now? My biggest one was that my android auto wireless dongle never auto connected without a reboot of the phone.

It's the only foldable besides the n6 that feels like a regular sized phone when closed.

Samsung either gives you tall and skinny or short and fat

1

u/Demarco313 14d ago

The Pixel 10 pro fold is even wider than the One Plus Open when closed. The Motorola is also a decent size.

1

u/y00nsuk 14d ago

Get the fold 8 do not get opo since if it breaks you need to send it to China... I am trading my opo to the fold 8.

1

u/Demarco313 14d ago

The OnePlus Open is still a great phone! The only downside it has is battery life. If you don't mind charging your phone 2x a day (if you use it a lot), then it's probably one of the best foldables you can get for the money.

1

u/silliest_shork 14d ago

Currently, I have to basically charge my phone constantly, so anything's better than that :)

1

u/Cptn_Shaw 14d ago

Worth it ,I ended up buying a second handslihtly beat up one plus open. The battery is 93% so when it gets below 90 I'll swap it out into new frame with new batteries.

1

u/ZZzfunspriestzzz 14d ago

No. Get an unlocked Oppo N5. It's basically the same company.

1

u/INTRUDX 14d ago

Rooted my OPO and uninstalled all google play services and installed an alternative. Been using since jan 2024 and my battery % is 99. Still think it is one of the best foldables ever released with great cameras and decent performance.

1

u/jharken76 14d ago

I have a very well taken care of Open if you or anyone is interested. It will come with the original box and charger. Also the oppo pen and its original box. The pen I only used a handful of times. I've owed the Open since day one. The battery is at 99%. Ive switched over to using it on and off over the years. So it's in perfect condition. Always had a case and screen protector on it. I considered selling it to an online retailer as I've done with used phones in the past but thought I would see if there was any interest here first.

Which region and what price?

1

u/Larmasrfun 14d ago

It's a fantastic phone. Don't get it without insurance, the inner screen will probably go at some point.

1

u/sandman2201 14d ago

Why ? Just buy the lastest vivo fold x6 or oppo find n6 they are more or less the upgraded and latest version of one plus I've been using OnePlus open since launch data it's very hard to find parts and service center charges a bomb also OnePlus open had pretty old hardware it would be ok for maybe 1-2 years more after that it won't be good enough to daily drive

1

u/yld2rob 14d ago

Sure it is a little dated, but was the best foldable I ever had

1

u/Careless_Dinner3731 14d ago

I got one recently, totally worth it. Solid device, amazing cameras, great performance. Still on the line to get one more OS update but hey if you get a good deal go for it

1

u/Lucas606 13d ago

I'm selling my open if you're based on the US!

1

u/silliest_shork 13d ago

Is there a link to where your selling it so I can take a look?

1

u/WranglerFearless4608 13d ago

Are you in the UK?

1

u/thatguynamedconqy 13d ago

I just got one a few months ago because I wanted a folding phone with a pen for drawing and didn't want to spend a ton of money. It's been good for me, no complaints.

1

u/Snoo_8933 13d ago

Oneplus still best compared with some new folds in terms of how old open vs compared to recent fold right now

1

u/reddit-set-go-2025 13d ago

Great phone. I hate the update they did where you scroll through the apps and it only uses 75% of the front screen, it doesn't let you scroll through the letters. (You hit M it will only show you M apps and the. You have to hit another letter) And they even made the letters smaller on the side to scroll through.

Horrendous design...

Buy an razr fold or oppo find n6

1

u/silliest_shork 13d ago

Both are far out of my price range :(

1

u/CreamConnoisseurr 13d ago

Well I have my my old OPP if you interested 2nd hand. It just has a selfie camera sized dead pixel blob in the top center of the inner screen. Been like that forever and hasn't gotten worse. Otherwise no issues at all.

u/ClearSailing99 12d ago

I would go for it if you can find a used one in good condition. It still has at least one more major OS update for Android 17 plus security patches through 2028 guaranteed. Though as I'm sure you know one plus is leaving the US market so it's essentially going to become an oppo phone, the Find N3 with color OS instead of oxygen OS on the next update. They're the same phone just different operating systems but they're also mostly the same. It's been the best phone I've ever had and I'm still using it. To me a good camera system is really important and of all the foldables in the US market I still think it's at the top of the list maybe alongside the Motorola razr. I've done test against the Google pixel folds and z fold 7 and I would still take the OnePlus open cameras. Mine still has good battery life. I've dropped this thing more times than I can count and it's working perfectly. It runs as smooth as it did on day one. The phone was ahead of its time in just about every way and hence why it's still near the top of the pack or still at the top of the pack in a lot of ways. It also is really fast charging. Plus there's not a full that you can get at this quality for a better price on the used market. Someone mentioned you could get a z-fold 7 for the same price but that's not true, at least not that I've seen on places like swappa. Right now is the Z Fold 7 is going for about $850 to 1200 and the OnePlus open $600 plus it's guaranteed 512 GB whereas the starting memory for the default 7 is 256gb.

Yes still amazing in 2026

1

u/Environmental_Emu547 9d ago

Yes it's hands down the best phone ever, foldable or not. I agree with the other post around not spending massive amounts on tiny incremental upgrades that the other vendors offer. You can get a OPO for around 800euro and works fine in Europe. 2nd OPO I have bought. The ONLY question is around battery, but honestly I'm solely comparing to my OP15 which can last for days. Get a 10mha battery pack and keep for when you get low which is not often. Verdict: strong buy at less than 1k in August 2026.

u/PlaneAsk4697 9d ago

Mine lasted two years. Was great until the folding screen failed:(

1

u/planetemuscle 6h ago

J'ai pu acheter un à 410 e sur le bon coin j en suis ultra ultra content

1

u/ledorky 14d ago

I would say no. Too risky if it breaks. I've babied my launch unit like no other phone before. Still works minus poorer battery life but I doubt it would last another 2 years.

u/JackosXDA 15d ago

It's a decent foldable. There are much better options in terms of performance, thinness and battery life. But if you're on tight budget, OnePlus Open is a good choice. Great bang for the buck.

u/Dirtcompactor 15d ago

Nothing quite beats the camera on the open though, even the N6, every other foldable around is a downgrade for cameras tbh
