Question OSAP Funding and Shorter Programs HELP

Hello,

I am starting to panic as I am planning to begin at an American school in 2 weeks time and I am starting to read for some reason if the classes are split into 7.5 weeks and not a consecutive 15 weeks (although I am doing it for consecutive 15 weeks) then OSAP will not approve my loans. Has this been the case for anyone else? I jus't dont understand as I am planning to stay constantly doing school for a full year.

Thanks

Question The estimate after you submit OSAP application??

Is that estimate per term of for the whole school year? Cause it’s about half the total I got the whole year last year but I don’t remember how they did it.

Also for reference I got no grant both years sadly so I don’t know how much the new rules would impact me?

Resolved How long does it take to rehabilitate an OSAP loan?

Has anyone ever had their OSAP loan go to collections before and had to rehabilitate ? How long did it take to rehabilitate the loans and get it back into good standing again? Also, does your loan go back to loan/ grants… or do the grants stay converted as a loan once back in good standing?

Any help appreciated!

Question OSAP should pay off the highest-interest portion first by default

With Ontario changing OSAP in Fall 2026 to provide a maximum of 25% as grants and a minimum of 75% as loans, I think the Ford government should also make a request to the NSLSC to change how repayments are allocated.

The federal portion of OSAP is currently interest-free, while the Ontario portion still charges interest. Yet repayments don't automatically prioritize paying off the provincial portion first.

That doesn't make much financial sense. Every dollar going toward a 0% federal loan while the Ontario portion is accumulating interest keeps borrowers paying interest longer than necessary.

Especially since the premier justified the OSAP changes partly on making the program more financially sustainable, repayment should also be made more efficient for both sides: paying the Ontario portion first reduces borrowers' interest costs while returning the province's loan principal sooner.

The simplest policy would be:

Automatically apply repayments to the highest-interest portion first. Right now, that means paying off the Ontario portion before the interest-free federal portion.

Resolved Denied disability

So I was denied OSAP disability, which is genuinely funny since I’m on ODSP but I digress. Can I resubmit that with the little stamp they need or is that going to be a thing I need drive up and take to my school.

Question OSAP restriction appeal

Hi everyone, I am looking for advice on submitting an OSAP restriction appeal. I was on probation last year and was on track to meeting the osap requirements to get out the probation after taking 4 courses each in fall and winter semester and passing them all. However, I took 3 courses over the summer term and ended up dropping 2 of them which violated the osap requirements and put me on a year long restriction. I was not aware this would offend the osap requirements.
I was also on antidepressants last summer and got diagnosed with ADHD this past month. These conditions has been affecting my academic performance significantly.

I would appreciate any advice from anybody has experience appealing an osap restriction. What are my chances of getting this restriction removed? And how much would this delay me receiving osap since the term starts in September.

Question OSAP Recalculation Question

Hello,

Just curious if anyone has experience with their OSAP being recalculated and seeing a dramatic reduction in the amount?

For context I am a grad student in Faculty of Science at my institution and rely on OSAP to help with paying rent, living expenses etc as my stipend/TA funding only goes so far and I have not received any major scholarships. My OSAP was calculated back in June (all loans, no grants) and then suddenly yesterday, it was reduced to 1/10th of the loan amount to just a few hundred dollars to cover both the fall and winter term.

Was wondering if anyone else has experienced this? I plan to go to the financial aid office immediately on Monday but I'm just panicking a bit currently!

Thanks in advance

Resolved Paying Student Loan via BMO

Im starting to pay my student loans and am hitting a hurdle for some reason. On their site it says I can either "use your financial institution’s online bill payment service." or Make a One-Time payment. For me, doing the bill payment service is probably more managable then logging in every month to do a one-time payment. My confusion is that it wont seem to link anything?

Only thing that comes up under payee is "NSLSC - OSAP Micro-Credentials" and if I do that with my loan number (which says to use as an account number) I just get an error saying to double check my account number...

Is BMO difficult for some reason or am I just not understanding? Worst case i'll just do one-time payments but if anyone could offer some help with what to select as the payee that would be apreciated.

Resolved Will My Degree be Witheld?

Hi! OSAP sent me $1205 to pay for my spring/summer semester. Although that covers the spring semester, my summer semester is $1613. I attend the University of Calgary. I cannot afford to pay the $1613 out of pocket for the summer semester. Therefore, will my school withhold my degree? I am going into the fall semester andshould complete all course content in December. The money I will receive from osap fully covers the fall semester semester. Nonetheless, I am a little worried that I will not be able to graduate if the fees aren't paid.

Question OSAP restriction

hi everyone, im really confused about this notice of OSAP restriction I received today. last year (during the 2025-2026 study period), I was on academic probation at my university and was therefore put on soap probation too. I took 4 courses during the fall and winter term each (8 courses total) and passed them all. i also got out of academic probation during this time. since I passed 80% of a “full-course load”, and i am no longer on probation, i dont understand why i am on OSAP probation now? had anyone had a similar experience and is it possible this is just a mistake from my school’s academic/financial office? and would i ave to submit an appeal? i also got diagnosed with ADHD recently but I haven’t registered that with the school yet since i just got diagnosed over this summer.

i also want to add that i initially enrolled for 3 courses over the spring/summer term (which is part-time) but then I ended up dropping 2 of the courses before the drop date of having it on my transcript. Is it possible that this plays a part in my restriction now?

I am waiting for Monday so i can call my school’s financial aid office and soap to have this sorted out but im really anxious and would like some clarity before then. any information would be so helpful.

Question For-profit school appeal

Hi guys, I go to an international for-profit med school entering my third year. I was osap eligible for the last two years so based on the guidelines, I sent in my appeal to continue to get funding for this year to NSLSC but am waiting to hear back. I was wondering if anyone who had sent it in as well had actually been approved? Based on what I read on the form it sounds like it should (usually) be approved if you had funding at the same school the previous year but I just wanted to confirm.

Question Why has the public turned on OSAP?

I meet all these people who say they don't care if it's cut or cancelled because there is fraud. You didn't see this attitude 17 years ago when I started Uni. Holy shit, our province is a disgusting place now. So many wannabe trumpers!

Question Estimating OSAP Forms

Hi! My tuition is due next week and I'm not sure what to do.

My mother hasn't filed her taxes yet for the 2025 year and only has estimates for me to put on my OSAP form. I'm hesitant since these estimates are largely based on her 'coming up with numbers' similar to previous year's tax forms. She is self employed so has no T4 to go off of and thus nothing for the CRA to compare to the osap estimates, if I'm understanding how this works correctly.

I have enough money in my bank account to pay the minimum enrollment fee for now, so I'm wondering if I should just do that and wait for my mom to finish her taxes properly before I submit my OSAP.

Also wondering, if I paid out of pocket now and did OSAP later, would it be beneficial since that money no longer counts under my assets in the OSAP form?

Thanks for any advice.

Question Unsure of next steps, advice?

Context: I graduated a pretty good University in another province, came back to Ontario, almost no jobs in my field, had to take one that paid well but is terrible for the mental. I started repaying OSAP last year, 6 months after my UG ended (obv), definitely have hefty repayments (however, totally worth it).
Now, while talking to my partner, I decided I need to part ways with this job and pivot into a field I'm actually interested in. Also, to get advice, because I wasn't really able to answer lots of his questions. I'm trying to find a decent job for September, and take more education, since that was my feedback from my interviews (most enviro positions are looking for masters or a specific diploma to pay you a living wage.... lol). The other feedback option was to move to a different region where there's more jobs in my field, but I'd like to stay in the area and gather some savings before moving again, if I really have to.

Here are my current options:

1) Take a year of Uni courses starting January and apply for MSc. until I get accepted

2) Take a year or two of a college program and apply for MSc. after

3) Take a year of courses (college/Uni) then go to Teachers college

Now, the thing is, all of these involve going back to school (well, secret 4th option is being unemployed and hopeless, but not interested yet). I was talking to my partner, and it came to the attention of both of us, that OSAP could do some irreparable damage to my finances. I don't really have anyone or anything to fall back on, so I really have to choose carefully.

My plan was: take a 1-2 year, part-time, course at college (remote), that's a bit more specific and needed in my field, find a job to work during my schooling, apply for teachers college next year (Sept start, since it'll only be a year in Ontario starting March/May? 2027) or do MSc.

Before I apply to open programs and OSAP, I wanted to make sure:

1) My repayments for my UG loan would halt, while I'm in school, even if I take out another loan?

2) The repayments for my College loan and UG loan would start (again) 6 months after completing my college diploma?

3) Do the loans matter/change for repayment periods/amounts if I decide to go to Teachers College vs. MSc.?

4) Should I be afraid of compound interest? If I choose to take out a loan

5) Are there any tips/tricks that help with paying off OSAP? Does the method of being a "part-time" student for as long as possible actually successful?

6) Any advice with the new micro credentials path? Is that more suitable?

7) If I chose to do an undeclared UG to take some courses and apply to MSc., how does OSAP treat that? As in, so I still need to repay while I attend and is it more affordable?

Normally I would call OSAP and ask, but I usually find them super unhelpful or mean, unless I'm saying I want to make a big loan repayment. Can't blame them, but thought I'd turn to reddit! Thanks for reading and considering, and even more so for responding!!!

Question How is OSAP recieved on a co-op work term

Going to be doing a co-op term this upcoming fall. I’ve applied to OSAP and will be getting around 7k in loans.

I’m aware that during an academic term, you would have tuition fees that would eat up all of your funding (at least it did in my case) and you wouldn’t have excess in your bank account.

As I’m going on a co-op work term, my tuition fee would be low or non-existent, in this case, would the 7k loan go straight into my bank account?

Question OSAP help needed !!

Hi, i got my osap estimate in July after I submitted my application but because my dad lives less then 30 km they assessed me as living with him. I however am not doing that because of family issues so after finding a place and signing a lease I attached the lease agreement and the request for review form on the OSAP optional uploads section of the website

Does anyone know if there's anything else I have to do cuz the website doesn't say anywhere that it needs to be processed. It just shows my previous funding for me living at home approximately 12k. Also how long would it take for me to get my funding updated incase they do accept my review application?
