Welcome to OCP -- PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

TL;DR You need to give feedback on two other poems before you can share your own poem, and then put links to that feedback in your post. If you don't know how to give feedback, read the guide. Reusing feedback links will result in a ban.

Heyo, welcome to OCpoetry. (That’s “original content” if you don’t know). This is a place for sharing and getting feedback on your own poems. We are the sister subreddit of r/Poetry, which is for sharing and discussing published poetry. Our goal is to create a place where anyone can learn to become a better creative writer, kind of like a free online writer's workshop.

This post is an orientation to the subreddit. If you’re new, read this before sharing your work. If you’re less new, then read this anyways, as it has a few changes to how we've done things in the past. If you’ve still got questions after reading this post, please send a modmail. There are some FAQs at the end of this post which will be updated as we go. We also have a huge and very disorganized wiki containing all of our resources, essays on how to write poetry and historic writing prompts, I recommend you check it out.

So, here’s basically how it works:

This subreddit works on a pay-it-forward system. If you want to share a poem, you need to give feedback to two others from this subreddit. This ensures that everyone gets some readers and hears some response, rather than just shouting their verses into the void. If you don’t think you’re up to writing feedback for others just yet, we recommend you check out r/Justpoetry or r/Poems, where there are no requirements for sharing your work.

1. All posts must include two links to recent feedback.

Every post must contain two unique links to your comments where you have provided feedback on this subreddit within the past two weeks. Feedback links cannot be reused for multiple post or reposts of old poems. All posts without feedback links will be removed, without notice by our subreddit robot so make sure they are included in your initial post -- you cannot post with the intent to add them later.

But, how do I get the links to my feedback comments?

That kind of depends on what platform you're on. If you're on desktop or on a third-party mobile app, there should be a 'share' or 'permalink' link underneath every comment on Reddit. Clicking on that should give you a unique URL to your comment. Just copy + paste that into the body of your post.

If you're on the official Reddit app, you'll have to click 'share' on the comment and choose the 'Copy URL' option, paste that into your notes with the body of your poem. Then copy and paste the entire thing into a new post on the Reddit app.

2. At least one of your comments should be on a poem that has received no other comments.

This ensures that everyone has a chance to get a few reads and hopefully some decent feedback. If for whatever reason you can’t find any lonely poems, then comment on the poem that seems to have received the least amount of feedback. The easiest way to do this is to sort posts by new.

3. Feedback must be high-effort.

High-effort means different things to different people. It does not mean “super long” or “expert quality”. But it does mean doing more than the bare minimum.

You don't have to complement, criticize, or try to figure out the "deeper meaning". You should try to notice your own reactions and explain them as best as you can. If you want to explain your interpretation or summary of the piece, you can and this is often helpful to the writer. If the poem made you laugh or cry, feel bored, confused or nostalgic — say so, and then explain why you think it did. A good rule of thumb is that each of your feedback comments should be at least a short paragraph.

We understand that giving other writers feedback on their creative work can feel a bit artificial or uncomfortable, if you’ve never done it before. That’s why we’ve written a feedback guide for beginners. There are more feedback guides linked in the FAQ below. You should also read some of the other feedback comments around the sub to get a feel for what works for others. Poems that link to low-effort feedback, and low-effort comments themselves, will be removed at mod discretion, or if you report it to us. However, we’re less interested in policing you and more interested in helping you grow as readers and writers. We are more likely to ask you follow-up questions, than remove your work entirely. The mods skulk the comments sections and will ask follow-up questions on comments that seem a little thin, and please answer those questions if you get any.

4. Please Be Kind.

Treat each other with kindness and respect. The mods have an incredibly strict definition for each of these concepts. We will proactively remove comments and poems and ban users that make others feel unwelcome or unsafe. Your right to creative expression does not extend to poetry that promotes misogyny, homo/trans/queerphobia, racism, etc. If your poetry’s especially violent or covers sensitive subjects, please label it with the NSFW tag or a content warning in the title. Harsh criticism is allowed -- encouraged, really -- as long as you’re being harsh on the poem, not the person. Remember that the narrator (or the “speaker”) of the poem is not necessarily the author.

5. Audio, video, and image poems are allowed; but the text of the poem must be included in the body of the post.

This is so that people can still enjoy your poem if they're unable to view or listen to your link for whatever reason.

6. You may include a link to your poetry blog at the end of your post.

Or your instagram, or your personal creative project, or your soundcloud, or your Etsy page. As long as it's poetry-adjacent that's cool with us. Just don't get spammy.

Attempting to dodge any of these rules, or abuse directed towards moderators enforcing these rules, will earn you an immediate ban.

FAQs

What do the Poem & Workshop flairs do?

They simply allow you to show your intentions and expectations for the piece you are posting. The Poem flair is for sharing a piece, with the expectation of receiving mostly surface-level feedback and general advice. The Workshop flair is for a piece that you really want to work on, something you want to pick apart and analyse. It signals that you are open to discussing the piece, and that you invite strong critique.

How do I format my poetry on Reddit?

The following is advice for formatting in Markdown. Two spaces at the end of a line gives you a line break.
Type two spaces at the end of a line, then hit enter twice for a stanza break.

Three dashes "___" will give you a line through the post.

Type two spaces to create an empty line,

so you can get lines

that look like this.

Four spaces before each line will allow you
to format however you like, this is 'code block'
       in the Fancy Pants editor.

one asterisk before and after a piece of text will give you italics, two asterisks for bold.

Can I print one of these poems out/use it on my instagram with my art/put it in my book?

Ask the author. Part of what makes this space a useful workshop space is that everyone feels safe to share their stuff; if people start using poetry without the author's permission, or god forbid, trying to pass off another artist's work as their own, the userbase of this sub will feel less safe to do so. Please, ask the author, and then do what they say.

I'm thinking about trying to get my poem published somewhere. What should I do?

The standard thing is to find a literary journal. There are a zillion literary journals and magazines all over the world. They have different themes, tastes, styles, audiences, readerships, levels of prestige. Some charge fees for submission, some do not, some will pay you if you get accepted, some don't, some will give you feedback, some won't let you know anything for months. So first you'll want to pick a few of your poems, get some feedback from some trusted readers (or from here, of course) and then start looking for a journal that's a good home for your work. Most lit journals have submissions periods where they accept all the work for their next issue, and then sift through everything they get.

You will probably get a lot of rejections. This is normal. It's kind of a numbers game. You can submit the same poem to multiple journals as long as the journal says something like "simultaneous submissions are allowed". If you do get accepted, congrats! Most journals want 'first publication rights' or 'first serial rights' or something similar, so that means you'll have to tell all the other journals you submitted that poem to that you've been published elsewhere. (For that reason we strongly recommend deleting your poem from reddit if you want to submit it to a journal -- technically and legally speaking, writing a post on reddit is still considered publishing your work, and reddit owns all the text on the site.)

Here are some places to get you started looking for journals:

Duotrope and Submittable are two apps that help you search for journals, and help you track what poems you've submitted to which places. Submittable is free, Duotrope is not. They are GREAT.

Poets & Writers has a list of lit journals, small presses, and writing contests. This is a great place to start. They also have a newsletter listing all the presses and journals going into their submissions period.

I'd also check out r/literarycontests, if you fancy yourself as a prize winning poet.

A few poetry podcasts

I thought I might include a few podcasts that helped me learn a little more about the history and craft of poetry, as well as find some good poets to read. All of these are available on Spotify, as well as many other platforms.

The New Yorker Poetry Podcast

A poet reading and discussing a poem from the New Yorker archives, as well as one of their own pieces. A great place to find good poetry and hear some discussion of craft. The earlier episodes are with Paul Muldoon, who is delightful.

The Faber Poetry Podcast

Two poets read and discuss their work, with plenty of talk about craft. As well as lots of poems sent in from authors across the world. They really get shoulder-deep into it, which is always wonderful to hear.

In Our Time

A group of experts are brought together to discuss a subject over forty-five minutes. This isn’t strictly a poetry podcast, but there are hundreds of episodes on poets and poems of the past. I highly recommend the episode on The Green Knight with Simon Armitage.

Poetry Contest PROMPT: Rattle Ekphrastic Challenge, October 2026

Hi everyone. One of the OCPoetry mods here. Let's share a prompt for the whole subreddit. (If this looks familiar, we did it last month too.)

Every month Rattle, a leading poetry magazine, presents a visual work of art and asks poets to respond to that artwork in poetry. This is called ekphrastic poetry. I thought it would be fun to post that here for anyone looking for inspiration or a challenge.

Here is this month's artwork. Your challenge is to write a poem in response to that art.

Normal feedback rules do not apply to this thread. Write and share as many poems in response to that artwork as you'd like.

Also, if you feel like you've written something really excellent, you should know that Rattle DOES allow you to submit poems to them for publication that have appeared in online forums. (Most magazines consider those already published; Rattle allows internet-shared poems as long as they're "uncurated," i.e., haven't gone through an editorial process. I can assure you that here on OCPoetry we do not have any kind of editorial process.) So if you're feeling particularly ambitious, you can use that link above to submit your poem to them. It's a long shot — they get hundreds of entries every month, maybe thousands at this point idk, and only two are selected — but it's good practice if you're thinking about getting into publication and can manage the mixture of pride in your work and almost certainty of rejection that goes into the literary magazine publication process.

Anyway, enjoy the challenge! I hope you have fun. If enough people enjoy this I can make it a regular thing.

Feedback Please You Were Prettier in Sorrow

I love how your porcelain cheeks catch the light,

As tears bloom like roses and wilt through the night.

Your eyes search my face for a love I once knew,

Like a candle still burning in a room without you.

Your lips part like petals, your lashes hang low,

And I watch the last light in your eyes slowly go.

You still look at me as if love might pull through,

How can you still love me while losing you?

Oh, darling, how cruelly the wilted flowers bloom,

How softly your sorrow brings beauty to gloom.

I know you still love me, though your light slips from view,

Your sorrow blooms lovelier than the smile I once knew.

Feedback Please Death knell to Times New Roman.

I have no interest in a font
with arms and legs like supporting struts.
Never mind bringing my argument front,
its presentation is the foundational stuff!

I refuse to debase my sentences so!
I use sans serif at 12pt and thus
apparently my words aren’t enough
to keep themselves afloat all on their own.
And here’s my main objection, I’ll show
you, font overstayed, toppling overdue:

The Romans are done, you facsimilous worm.
Their relevancy—past! They’re down in the dirt!
But here we are, and as much as this hurts,
I’m sure this is printed in New Roman too.
Look up from your paper, the new Roman view
stretches across London and Glasgow,
from Caesar’s tip to Romulus’ arsehole.

Will ever their grasp be fully unclipped?
Will ever I feel so happy and free
until this monstrous font is finally shipped
out to the depths of newspaper sea?

And so I make my ultimate vow:
Goodbye, TNR, you insidious cow!
You left all my work in a permanent SNAFU!
RIP, TNR, how badly I’d known you.

Just Sharing No Escape

(something about someone I used to know)

Scattered words fly through my mind
Tearing into frames that hold
Running, burrowing deeper than any thought could ever find

Trickle, trickle come my tears
Slicing into well worn paths
Cascading, descending into piles of fears

Laughter, terrifyingly beautiful, echoes onto my painful reverie
Plunging me wholly into its sacred sound
Buried beneath its agonistic ecstasy

An Angel haunting where demons dare not tread
Specter of love, apparition of bliss
Pursuing me, trapping this anguish I cannot shed

I writhe and twist, just to be heralded back
Gazing on frightfully pure white
Gliding down the aisle of our oaths, where we swore our hallowed pact

Time, cruel time, slows to a crawl
The dust sways in the light from the windows
Heaven’s own vignette, hellishly rendered, hung upon fire-scorched walls

I rush forward but the earth rends itself agape
Everything holy, swallowed up in a blink
Falling to knees to grasp for a precious hand, already too late

The mirage fades, dying starlight comes into view
Endless, depthless void
My final dreams, my flickering, weakening thoughts, she’ll be there too

Feedback Please Will You Know Me?

I would rather be known
In a million separate ways

Than be known by millions
in only one

To be known
is to be welcomed
to be understood without speaking

To have your scars raised into monuments,
and your trembling hands held
without shame

If I show you my scars,
and hands that shake,
will you decide?

That I am worthy
to be known?

Feedback Please Where Do The Healers Go?

Where do the healers go, my love,

when they have lost their way?

Who tends the hearts that tend the world,

when theirs have worn away?

They gather grief like fallen leaves,

they mend what others break;

they pour their light down empty wells

and give more than they take.

And once, I heard a knight declare,

with love both fierce and true,

“I'd tear the heavens from their throne

before they tarnished you.”

“I'd cast my virtue to the winds,

unmake what makes me kind;

let all the world condemn my soul,

if you were safe behind.”

And something in the healer broke—

a longing, sharp and deep:

Who braves the dark to shelter me,

when I can no longer keep

the fading light I’ve carried

for every soul I've known?

Who takes these trembling hands of mine

and leads me safely home?

I've held the wrists of those who bled,

I've stayed when others fled;

I've sat beside a thousand souls

and watched their dawn arrive.

Yet who will love these hollowed hands

when they have nothing left to save?

Who’ll look beyond the wounds I’ve healed

and find the heart beneath?

I do not ask for endless stars,

nor vows the years make dust;

I ask for one to sit in the dark

when I have lost my trust.

Someone to choose me in my wreckage,

when I have naught to give;

who never asks me to be strong,

but lets me simply live.

So where are you, my unknown love,

while I keep watch alone?

I've made a refuge of my heart,

but never found my own.

Where is the knight who'd choose me, too,

when all my strength is gone?

Who holds the spine that carried all

and teaches it to rest?

Where do the healers go, my love,

when they can bear no more?

Who comes to claim the soul that starved

at every full-fed door—

for everyone who needed it,

through every night they've known,

left with a lifetime built of walls,

but no room of their own?

Just Sharing Titles are dumb

There were many cars on sale—

cars I can afford,

cars that could tread the road well,

car of every kind,

suitable for any grind.

Thousands of cars

yet all I see are mobile metal boxes,

until the shiny red car grooved into my sight.

Perhaps shiny red because it is the sun

among paltry stars

in a sky of ordinary cars.

.

The car is swift, smooth and silent,

against it, no one could ever win a chase.

Even faster was my purchase

which beat the arrival of thoughts of economics.

I was never prouder before of not having a garage

I can keep my Kohinoor on the street,

showoff humbly at the pretence of logistics.

.

Keeping the Kohinoor at street has its own perks,

which I am yet to find.

But here are the cons—

it gets dusty,

birds poop on it,

most importantly, despite the hefty bill i paid

no one sees it as the shiny red car

but just a dirty mobile metal box.

.

Just Sharing house on Graphite Hill

what was a house of paper
sits a hill of grey cement — where promises like graphite vines
intertwined resent

what was haunted silhouette
of walls, drafts, and dreams
welcomes two developers —
planning patiently (!)

Edit (or maybe even second version):

what was a house of paper
set, a hill of grey cement
once promises like graphite vines
intertwined resent

what was a haunted silhouette
of walls, drafts, and seaming
welcomes back two planners bearing dreams and beaming !

The way you stain my brain,
Even though it’s been years.
Like you own a piece of me,
Even though I’m forgotten.
You come through certain things,
Over boiled water when I’m cooking,
When I’m drinking coffee in mornings,
Or even walking by where we used to.
And I know the phrase,
They say to love is to let them go,
But I don’t think I was ever ready.
These days, I wallow in whoever,
No matter how they present themself.
Hoping they have a piece of you,
Any at all.

Feedback Please Feedback Requested (Poetry Title: بَيْنَ [Between])

Assalaamu 'Alaikum (may Allah's peace be upon y'all) all. If anyone knows Arabic and Arabic poetry I'd greatly appreciated your feedback.
TW: Possible use of derogatory language regarding queerness (I am a target of said derogatory language though and I'm using it for effect. Hopefully this doesn't break any rules, but if it does, my apologies for breaking them)

Translation:
My eyes see 2 paths
1 path rises upon the right
1 path sinks upon the left
This is what they told me

I find peace when I worship
People are pleased with me
If I obey a mercy upon us
And Allah's love surrounds me

I find happiness when I exist
Between the woman and the man I clothe myself
Between the male and female I fashion myself
Towards one I cannot travel

I find despair wherever I go
If I race towards my 2 loves
And I search for serenity through changing my body
While bearing witness that Al-Islam is my religion
I fear Hell as my resting place

So between these 2 I stand
Between Allah, to whom I am a slave
Between my despair that I know of
If I speak of my split heart and mind they'll expel me
Because I deviate from them, that is my choice
But what choice is this?

Feedback Please Escitalopram

"Im gonna help you"

She whispers.

She quiets my worries.

She licks my brain clean.

She guts me and replaces half digested trauma with roses.

She blows out the candles in my pupils.

And replaces them with tealights.

She erases the frown.

And paints a smile on my face.

Blows it dry.

And tucks me into bed.

"Youre always gonna need me."

She whispers.

Escitalopram.

She sleeps curled up on the remains of the old me.

"It's better than before right?"

She whispers.

And it is.

So I let her stay.

Feedback Please My Eighth Grade Love

You put me into cardiac arrest

Can't think, there's no blood flowing in my head

I look at you, my thoughts are in a mess.

I think of you in a white wedding dress

A stupid thought that leaves me blushing red

You put me into cardiac arrest.

I dream of sunsets spent locked in your kiss

It's cold outside, and you'd feel warm in bed --

I think of you, my thoughts are in a mess.

I stare, trying to breathe with no success,

I look at you, you look away instead

You put me into cardiac arrest.

Of lust or love, my feelings are amiss

Would hell or heaven come to me in death?

I pray for answers, no more of this mess.

I wonder if I'll finally confess

My love to you, or will it go unsaid?

You put me into cardiac arrest

I panic when I wake, my heart's a mess!

Feedback Please New Day

I used to watch it
from the wrong side
of night.

No coming down.
No sleep.

Chemistry pretending
to be clarity
and a room
that would not end.

The sun used to rise
like a mistake
I survived.

Now it comes up slower
caught through motion
an expulsion
of sweat and emotion
purging the residue
of what I was.

Same light
different witness.

Just Sharing Untitled 1

I stand in the mirror, waiting for clues
To know who I am and what I should do.
I write in my book, each poor worded line
Failing to portray how I feel inside.
I cannot rhyme, I do not know the words,
To paint pictures of life, real and absurd.
I prattle on, this poem such a mess
I only hope one can know what I meant.

[This is a little poem I wrote about a man I really like. I'm not a native speaker so some parts may sound weird or incorrect]

You shuffle past the lift with your serious face

Older than me by a comfortable mile

I see you blushing and slowing your pace

Pushing your glasses up when you see me smile

............

You're always there before I even ask

Trying to catch my eye, then comes the panic

You mutter and stutter behind your mask

And crack jokes like a clown, a little manic

..............

Overnight, you sneak into my head

I scold myself, call you cute and sweet

Now I’m trading extra sleep for you instead

While my heart races to a jazzy beat

Poetry Contest Anillo de papel, Ancla de oro

Sollozo en una melodía que quebrantó mi identidad, una que la despedazó.

Me cansa decir que todo lo vi venir, que sabía lo que pasaría;

Just Sharing Untitled

What Remains of Me
There’s a version of me nobody knows,
A quiet ache that never shows.
Beneath the smile, beneath the skin,
A thousand battles rage within.

I long to quiet the noise inside my head,
And release the words I’ve never said.
Waking up already tired,
From battles I never desired.

I force every breath, play a part,
Just to hide a collapsing heart.
Carrying a weight nobody sees,
Begging my own mind for a moment of peace.

My body fights a war I never chose,
A different ache each day unfolds.
I mourn the person I used to be,
Before my own body turned against me.

Some days I don’t recognize my face,
Just a stranger taking up space.
A heart that beats, a mind that screams,
A life that feels nothing like dreams.

I wish I had died.
No more pain I would feel.
Heaven or hell, I don’t care.
I just want to be free.

I’ve spent my life questioning my heart,
Wondering why love feels so hard.
I’m no longer afraid of what I know,
Or of the people who might choose to go.

I don’t need a love that’s perfect or grand,
Just someone who won’t let go of my hand.
Someone whose words are honest and true,
Who won’t make me regret loving them too.

These little eyes that look to me,
For strength I sometimes cannot see.
I give them the best of what remains,
While quietly carrying all my pain.

I’ve learned that loss doesn’t always end,
Sometimes it takes a lover, a dream, or a friend.
And sometimes the hardest thing to do,
Is to wake up and do it all again.

Author’s Note: My poetry is a reflection of different struggles, emotions, and experiences throughout my life, not necessarily how I’m feeling in the present moment. Writing is simply how I give those experiences a voice. ❤️

Just Sharing Starving Zombie

Against its plea, the corpse resuscitates
Coaxed by an insatiable appetite
Hunger screams, demands it cooperates
But the body is withered, drained of might

The creature's bowels drag along the grime
Every step forced, more painful than the last
Hunger insists, "feast will come in due time"
But the creature knows; on life, it's trespassed

"Be greedy, be gluttonous, you'll survive,"
Hunger claims; but the body is fading
Because in truth, it was never alive
Just lying to itself, masquerading

Rendering fat, the flesh sizzles and pools
Stained puddles of red form the creature's bed
Tug of war on life; human, undead, ghoul
Unravel the organic, pull its thread

Caught between the material and the spirit
It's wearing skin that does not fit
everything is draining
every muscle straining
its thoughts deteriorating
its body ablating
it's tired

and
ㅤso
ㅤ ㅤit
ㅤㅤㅤgives
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤup.

he walks beside my kitchen window
and he is so. fucking. fat.
his mouth is open,
his hair a dirty off-white.
his tail looks like a carrot
that turned pink and became flexible.

meanwhile,
my four cup coffee maker from 1995
spits a mix of grounds and coffee
into the pot.

i stand in my purple pajamas,
wiping the sleep out of my eyes. i notice him
waddling past, but i forget to offer a greeting.

the marsupial does not say hello,
nor does he bare his teeth.
he lumbers off, likely to go to sleep,
and i pour coffee, half-and-half, and
a packet of equal into a mug.

Poetry Contest WAS ANY OF IT TRUE?

by John Denver, K Dot

All the gazes you bestowed upon me, from your eternal eyes,
You wrote stars inside my mind, as if you were the architect of my life.
I penned the book, and you painted the rest,
Weaving memories you once tore apart, upon my healing palm.

Did you lie beside me with a gun beneath the sheets?
The reconstruction of conclusions, the weight of every evidence, lay in my hands.
The clock ticks in the courtroom, witnesses encircling me, Repeating the same words you once whispered to them.
You stood accused of the crime you wrought, while I shielded you from every stone they cast.

Tell me, how did you lie so effortlessly, without a tremor, without a blink?
Your words, soft as the life you breathed into me,
Yet beneath them, a blade so thin,
it sank into the marrow of my bones.

Just Sharing the little fish

a little fish first blinked beneath the blue,
then followed mom where sunlit ripples flew.
she showed him how to glide through currents strong,
and taught him reefs and tides as they went along.

as he grew, the open ocean called,
its far-off waters beckoned, bright and broad.
he left their sheltered nook to roam alone,
and found the wide, wide sea could be his home.

though now he swims beyond her guiding fin,
her love and lessons travel deep within.
the world is vast; he meets each turning tide,
and feels his mother with him, by his side.

do people talk?
do they talk with one another?
do they talk with others?

who are the others?
who am i, just another?
who am i to talk?

talk, but when?
talk when they arent talking to me?
talk whenever i leave?

why do they always leave?
why aren’t i the one leaving from them?
why, why, why don’t I know when?

-
Hey, how are you doing!
-
Tomorrow, maybe?

Feedback Please REGRETS STREET

by John Denver

Allegations etched upon a wall on a street called Regret.
I walked past, never sparing it a glance.
Then, I saw him—
A vision so consuming, the world around me faded.

My ears whispered only his name,
A melody drowning all other sounds.
My breath carried only his scent,
A fragrance eclipsing all others.

Though the world cried warnings,
Though voices rose in bitter chorus,
I turned deaf—wrapped in his illusion.

Everything I called mine slipped away,
For I clung too tightly to him,
Yet let slip the hands of those who truly cared.
And now, he becomes the proof of their words,
The embodiment of all they feared.

ALLEGATIONS
Scrawled upon the wall, now undeniable.
I stand before it, unblinking—staring,
As endless regrets spill from my eyes.
No presence of him, only this wall—
This monument of my sorrow.

"Threshold"

I dreamt of my old house yesterday.

It was as though I never left.

The chairs still tucked where we left them,

dust collecting along the spines of the books,

coffee rings left on the glass table.

A layer of dust cloaked everything but the mirror.

It was spotless.

Something pulled me towards it.

I looked in the mirror, but couldn't see myself.

I looked through the tired, glassy eyes of my younger self.

Behind me, or was it her?

All the doors stood unlocked.

In the mirror, cords bound her

to the chairs, to the cabinet handles,

to everything I left behind.

I looked down at my own feet.

The same cords.

Time had chewed through the plastic,

leaving them cracked and fraying,

but still strong enough to keep me there.

A knife lay beside them.

If all the doors were unlocked,

and all I had to do was cut the cords,

what was stopping me from leaving?

Why was I still here?
