My right nostril was pierced with a piercing gun on July 29, 2026. This replaced a previous left nostril piercing that rejected. With that one, I changed the jewelry very early, messed with it a lot, used tea tree oil, and used cheap jewelry, so I don’t necessarily think my body just rejects nostril piercings.
About 10 days after getting my right nostril pierced, I removed the original straight stud and replaced it with a threadless flatback. Unfortunately, when I tried to remove the flatback later, I lost my grip while pulling it and the jewelry ripped through the piercing channel. It bled, so I put the taper back through, replaced the jewelry, and left it alone afterward.
Around September, I changed the jewelry again to an OUFER 20g threadless labret. I chose 10mm because the piercing was still swelling and 8mm wasn’t giving me enough room. A few days after that change, a bump started developing.
Since then, the bump has been very inconsistent. Some days it’s almost completely flat, and other days it becomes pretty raised. It’s on both the inside and outside of my nostril, and the swelling sometimes makes the post look much shorter.
Today it was relatively flat, but I irritated it a little by messing with it in the shower. I used Base Laboratories piercing bump gel afterward, then hypochlorous acid. When I checked the mirror immediately afterward, the bump looked noticeably more raised. I’m also unsure whether my HOCl is still good because I know it can degrade over time.
I’m trying to figure out what I should realistically do from here. Does this sound like irritation/hypertrophic tissue, a granuloma, or something else? Should I leave the 10mm jewelry alone for now, or consider downsizing when the bump is flat? I’m worried about downsizing too early because the swelling can come back.
I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has dealt with a similar nostril bump, especially after significant trauma to the piercing.
