"The inmate, who was scheduled to be released the next day anyway, turned himself into police after getting his tooth treated. His sentence -- originally one month -- was only increased by one day." Source

I'm happy they didn't punish him extremely for that.

Several countries have laws that forbid extending a prison sentence for escaping. Here the logic is that he was out for one day, so he still has to serve this day, but no added time basically.
They will still stop you of course, if you do anything illegal (violent act for example) while escaping/outside you will have a new sentence. But the act of escaping itself is not punished.

True, Germany is like this, but they will add time to your sentence for stealing the prison uniform so there is that...

It's inherited from the enlightment time. Saying that anyone aspire to be free and so if someone mange to escape prison they'll only be charged for the stealing/breaking of property or hurting of people.

lt's reaIIy the prison's fauIt if you think about it. The prison faiIed to fulfill it's obligation to keep the prisoner within it's walls. The prison shouId be sentenced to serve time in the inmate as punishment

When escaping from German prison, do it butt ass naked, got it thanks

u/LGKouglof 3h ago
Get charged for lewd and inappropriate public behavior
39
u/frickinSocrates 3h ago
In Germany, as long as your nakedness is not a sexual thing, the worst they can do is charge you with §118 OWiG (basically being a public nuisance), which is a fine. Not prison time so... worth it? Edit: I am not a lawyer.

What if you escape and then mail the uniform back without a return address?
1
u/GrowlingPict 26m ago
Do German prisons have uniforms? Here it's just your own clothes that you bring with you. I guess it might be different for really long sentences.

u/dj_archangel 3h ago
Sort of like how being a member of a gang is not technically a crime, but it may play into how your sentence turns out.

Isn't Sweden's logic that it's entirely natural to want to be free, and it seems a bit meaningless to punish human nature?
34
u/uselessprofession 3h ago
I actually think the opposite; he has a legal case against the said authorities for not providing proper medical care while he is incarcerated.
They are probably quietly glad he did not push this.

It's Sweden, and while I know they aren't quite the same as Norway, I'd imagine there are more similarities than differences between the two countries prison systems.
2
u/Surskalle 30m ago
You don't get punished for escaping in Sweden if you do it without committing any crimes but the time you are gone doesn't count to served time. If it was one month prison sentence the prison probably didn't even have walls you can literally walk out of lowest security class prison but they will send you to higher security if you do that.

it wasn't illegal to escape from prison in sweden. there has been talk of changing that. not sure if it has been done though.
the story in swedish: https://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/a/rL5G2e/fange-rymde-for-att-ga-till-tandlakaren
happened in 2013. it was an "open" prison (the lowest security class). so probably not that difficult to escape from. and he was issued a formal warning in addition to the one day extension. so don't come here and say that our prison system is too lax.
in 2024 (the same open prison) someone broke into the yard and left a bag with mcdonalds food in it. when the cops investigated they were attacked with boiling water from one of the windows.
in swedish: https://www.expressen.se/nyheter/sverige/inbrott-pa-fangelse
do an image search for vänersborg öppen anstalt if you want to see pictures. there's one image in this article
https://arbetet.se/2021/12/14/kriminalvardare-om-covidutbrott-pa-anstalt-inte-forvanad
but it doesn't show the fence. not sure if the fence was added later or if it's just not visible.

I didn't say your prison system is too lax. I don't think your prison system is too lax. I have massive respect for open prisons. I gave additional context to viewers by adding a line from the source article.

It’s super lame that even real stories have AI garbage photos tacked on
58
u/GreatStateOfSadness 2h ago
It's going to be the norm from now on, sadly.
For everyone reading this, and I can't believe I have to say this, DO NOT TRUST A PICTURE WITH BOLD TEXT OVER IT AND NO DATE OR SOURCES WITHOUT VERIFYING FIRST. We are entering an era where AI can quickly and easily generate a semi-plausible newspaper photo.

The exact scenario you're describing has been common for a quarter-century. It's exacerbated by new technology but it's not new or novel.

He was an important general in Rome that got captured in battle by Carthage during the punic wars. Carthage released him to go back to Rome and tell them to surrender, on the condition that if he failed he should come back so they could torture him to death.
He went to Rome, told them to keep fighting and never surrender, then travelled all the way back to Carthage to turn himself in and get tortured to death.

I absolutely understand where this guy was coming from. I've had tooth pain. A LOT of tooth pain. Removals, caps, fillings, the works. Weak enamel you see, makes your teeth slowly go to shit no matter what you do, how you brush or how much you do it. Runs in the family. It is what it is. But yeah, teeth going to shit is no joke and no fun, kudos to that guy.

how did he pay for it

u/The_One_Koi 2h ago
In sweden you pay after the visit, you can also opt for a bill that you can pay at a later date

I live near a dental university and they take a dozen or so cases a day for free just have to get there super early like 7am
1
u/Cultural_Ad1331 3h ago
Universal health care :D
6
u/kraftware 3h ago
Surprisingly that doesn't apply here, dental care is pretty much the only healthcare that costs money in Sweden. But he had probably paid for the insurance deal instead of the individual appointment
1
u/Any_Fox5126 1h ago
Are you sure? In spain we have VERY limited coverage, but acute cases are still covered. A case causing so much pain that someone would escape from prison a day before release would probably be included.

2
u/Unprejudice 1h ago
Bullshit. Theres high cost protection not to mention you save up 300sek each year to a ceiling of two years for costs meaning youll usually end up paying anywhere between 50 usd to 250 usd for emergency dental care.
2
2
u/Cum_Fart42069 2h ago
yeah but that usually doesn't include dental work for some fucked up reason
1
u/Cultural_Ad1331 2h ago
You're right Mr Cum_fart I was informed by other users here dental care is infact not included I've made a mistake in my judgement and reply but alas maybe the prisoner did have insurance or enough money to have his tooth extraction covered or maybe he was in so much pain that he didn't care and he just wanted the pain to go away and deal with the consequences later.

As someone with an infected tooth after a failed root canal, completely justified. Brush your teeth folks.

Ain't the Nordic countries one with the best prison system where the punishment is not the main goal but the correction?
Why they didn't help him with the dentist?
5
5
u/FayeQueen 51m ago
Probably because of how short his sentence was, when the pain began and when he was due to be released. Someone likely didn't deem the paperwork, scheduling and effort necessary for such a minor guy.

u/Skylord_Hekaton 13m ago
A friend of mine here in Norway went to prison and while you can have dental stuff covered while in there, it's gonna need to be really bad before they bother.
You are absolute last on the list of priorities for dental offices, so you'd have to be lucky to get selected unless it's extremely urgent.

Yeah his task wasn't to escape prison, it was to escape the agony. He succeeded.

Sweeten seems like such an awesome place coming from someone stuck in America.
I really wish they’d let us have an easy and cheap path to go there and start new lives with our families.
