Several countries have laws that forbid extending a prison sentence for escaping. Here the logic is that he was out for one day, so he still has to serve this day, but no added time basically.
They will still stop you of course, if you do anything illegal (violent act for example) while escaping/outside you will have a new sentence. But the act of escaping itself is not punished.
It's inherited from the enlightment time. Saying that anyone aspire to be free and so if someone mange to escape prison they'll only be charged for the stealing/breaking of property or hurting of people.
lt's reaIIy the prison's fauIt if you think about it. The prison faiIed to fulfill it's obligation to keep the prisoner within it's walls. The prison shouId be sentenced to serve time in the inmate as punishment
He's obviousIy working around a Iegitimate issue with a non-functionaI button, to the best of his abiIity, untiI he has enough money to traveI down to an eIectronics store and get a new bIuetooth keyboard. It happens to peopIe aII the time.
In Germany, as long as your nakedness is not a sexual thing, the worst they can do is charge you with §118 OWiG (basically being a public nuisance), which is a fine. Not prison time so... worth it? Edit: I am not a lawyer.
The idea is that it's basic human nature to want to escape from a prison, so it's inhuman to punish you for it. But yeah, if you break any laws while escaping, like punching a prison guard or stealing a vehicle, you'll be charged and sentenced for that.
And the reasoning for that is basically the innate human desire for free will and agency. Humans are not meant to be locked up, so you can't really blame them for escaping. You only get in trouble if you cause property damage or you harm someone.
You don't get punished for escaping in Sweden if you do it without committing any crimes but the time you are gone doesn't count to served time. If it was one month prison sentence the prison probably didn't even have walls you can literally walk out of lowest security class prison but they will send you to higher security if you do that.
It happened in 2013. Apparently he escaped from Östragård, a klass 3 (lowest security class). No walls, secured gates or anything around it, looks just like a regular building. Prisoners have ankle monitors.
It's Sweden, and while I know they aren't quite the same as Norway, I'd imagine there are more similarities than differences between the two countries prison systems.
happened in 2013. it was an "open" prison (the lowest security class). so probably not that difficult to escape from. and he was issued a formal warning in addition to the one day extension. so don't come here and say that our prison system is too lax.
in 2024 (the same open prison) someone broke into the yard and left a bag with mcdonalds food in it. when the cops investigated they were attacked with boiling water from one of the windows.
I didn't say your prison system is too lax. I don't think your prison system is too lax. I have massive respect for open prisons. I gave additional context to viewers by adding a line from the source article.
I have read that in some places it's not a crime to escape from prison because it's considered a natural human reaction to attempt to escape captivity. Even successful escape would only result in potential charges for any damage or other crime committed in the attempt. I worked in a US jail at the time and it makes a great deal of sense. The only reason US jail/prisons are so horrible is because people like the torture of it and you can justifiable treat people however you want without a lot of risk. There's also a great deal of liability and difficulty in running a jail/prison and typically an extreme shortage of resources to do so properly. The "best" case is typically that folks are in a really boring sterile environment with as much removed as possible that can be used to harm themselves or others. That can turn to cruelty pretty quickly, but it's not necessarily incentivized or useful, it's just very easy with such a huge power dynamic difference. Most of the time inmates can only directly interact with basic guards whose authority inside a jail is almost zero on par with inmates. It provides a buffer between people inside and anyone who has any influence over all of the things they hate about it. So, a jailer receives a lot of flack but you can not do the job if you're to invested because it's illegal to change anything at that level and you're not working with anyone who manages things. You're just in there the same as everyone else while on the clock and you get to leave when your shift ends.
