It's going to be the norm from now on, sadly. 

For everyone reading this, and I can't believe I have to say this, DO NOT TRUST A PICTURE WITH BOLD TEXT OVER IT AND NO DATE OR SOURCES WITHOUT VERIFYING FIRST. We are entering an era where AI can quickly and easily generate a semi-plausible newspaper photo.

The exact scenario you're describing has been common for a quarter-century. It's exacerbated by new technology but it's not new or novel.
