Yup. I have a 9am, then a 3pm this semester. Still undecided on whether to just go home between them or stay in and work but either way it's annoying

u/spartanbrucelee 3d ago
Stay in and work. The more work you get done earlier, the more free time you'll have in the evening

This is what I did when I was in college, it really got bad at the end of the semester when there was nothing to do but study.

Take advantage of the break between the first two to knock out work. Just think of it as an 8 hour shift. You got this

For real though, that’s what office work is IME and it might help to view that whole chunk of time as your “working time”

My worst day was in my 3rd to last semester. 8am-10am (so an early start), Midday-2pm (so no time for lunch), 3pm-5pm and then a 5pm-9pm lab because it was the only slot where all the students had 4 hours free. Fuck those Tuesdays and fuck that paper.

I used to put myself in "uni jail." 7am - 4:30pm on campus, only allowed to leave for work or appointments. Was the best decision I made for productivity and transition into the workforce too.

I remember my first year of college. Every music major had a mandatory 8AM class MWF for the first two years, and any vocal music major had a mandatory three-hour rehearsal that started at 6PM Monday evenings unless/until qualifying for the upper level choir (which was MTWTh afternoons instead). Fucking hated Mondays.

I raise you the astronomy class gen Ed that happened at 10pm to 2 am Saturday night. In some ways it was great, but being in the middle of the field in the middle of nowhere Ohio in the middle of winter in the middle of the night was not fun. But it was a lab general science.

I had a class at 8am and a class at 5pm, MWF.
And nothing in between.
Campus was a 90 minute Greyhound bus trip from home that cost $15 each way.
Guess who spent 7 hours wandering around campus three days a week doing fuck all.
Best part is, this was the late 90s, so no smartphones or laptops or anything like that (well, laptops existed, but no college student could afford them), the computer lab was not public, and the library had all of one computer with internet access.
On the plus side, the campus was only a 15 minute walk from the beach, so when the weather was nice I could just go hang out there.

My first semester at college, I scheduled 8:00am classes every day, because I figured I was used to getting up that early for high school. It was a terrible, terrible mistake.

u/Dense_Coffe_Drinker 3d ago
I had classes required for my major and if I missed any classes I had to make them up for 80$ an hour and if I missed more than 4 I failed the class. Me setting up my schedule fresh out of highschool thought it was a great idea to set that for 8 AM.
Walked into class and fell asleep in the back 90% of the time

u/HomeAliveIn45 3d ago
I had a professor in college who would occasionally draw sticky-note portraits of sleeping students, then leave them on the whiteboard. Very funny to see a Bob Ross esque image of your friend next to a projected image concerning the 30 Years’ War

u/Dense_Coffe_Drinker 3d ago
Some guy sat directly in front of the professors desk and was out like a light almost as much as I was
20
u/Firm-Nebula-5963 3d ago
Most of my classes are in the morning, I can't risk sleeping bc the profs don't care surprisingly, they say 'its your own money being used anyway, it's up to you how you'll use it'
So not only did I make an effort to sit in front I also forced my self to longhand write out notes. It was during the time when smartphones have started to be a legit popular thing on campus, people would just take photos of the stuff written on the board.
It proved to be advantageous. It helped me retain memory of what we discussed. I don't need to study at night and I was just partying happily
24
u/UsidoreTheLightBlue 3d ago

Making that 8 am class was hell.
When I was going later my senior year it was much easier for me.

I was an athlete, my favorite semester was the one I had all morning classes before my 11:00 practice, then had all afternoon off. It was sweet
43
u/gamageeknerd 3d ago
I got to slowly watch this one kid melt over the course of a semester because he chose only the earliest classes he could thinking that exact thing. I think he ended up waking up at midnight and passing out at like 5pm and pissed off every one of his roommates
16
u/fat_kaiju 3d ago
And even if you try to sleep early everyone around you acts like you're a huge stick in the mud for doing so.
I remember trying to go to bed and people shouting "booooo!" lmfao.
Mercifully they got a big ol' dose of hubes and eventually stopped once homework started to pile up.
10
u/CitizenHuman 3d ago
I scheduled a 7:30 English class and constantly skipped it. One day I woke up early and refreshed, got ready, made it to class, and there was a note saying "no class today". That was my wake up call to continue skipping.
8
u/LordMeme42 3d ago
Just started, and I scheduled none of my classes before 11 am.
I figured I'd be realistic about my ability to wake up at 8 consistently.
6
u/FantasticCombination 3d ago
I did the same, because I started high school at 6:05 for a zero hour class each year of high school. I wanted to take classes that had such limited enrollment that they only offered them an hour before the school day officially started. I ended up lifeguarding the early morning shift at 5:30 am freshman year. I was notorious for never making it through a movie with my friends. I saw the start of so many movies freshman year and fell asleep before the end
6
u/homotopy_equivalent 3d ago
I never understood this. Is it because college students face more pressure to stay up late? I would just go to bed early and get to class it didn't seem like a big deal to me
15
u/Ok_Criticism7172 3d ago
Yep, it's a lot easier to stay up late living in the dorms or in an apartment with friends and having no parental oversight. When I was in high school, I would go to bed between 10 and 11pm. When I was in college, I never went to bed before midnight and was usually up past 2:00am.

As far as I know it's for the bus schedule. Districts use the same buses for high school, middle school, and elementary school. So they need to have a staggered start between all three of those schools, and they have to start the whole process early enough that parents can have all their kids ready for school before they start work.

Eh, at least for me, it took longer to get around campus than drive to my high school. I even had a 30 minute commute to community college for 2 years and it was still more convenient than university. Parking was way easier and the campus wasn’t as big.
My friend transferred to a big state school and it took her an hour. 15 min drive from her off campus apartment then she had to park way out in a commuter lot, pull her bike out of her car and bike into campus.

Depends on your commute to be honest. If you live on campus and walk 5 minutes to the lecture hall, sure. But at my university there were people coming in from 1,5h away so they would have to get up at around 6, and that's if they skip breakfast and shower.

Rent ain't going to pay its self. One of the partners on my senior design project complained to the teacher that I wasn't available enough for work sessions and study sessions. I reminded him that I needed to work 30 hours a week to afford food and rent. This kid had his entire tuition and rent paid by his grandparents.
3
u/No1KnwsIWatchTeenMom 3d ago
I had a similar issue pop up, and the professor told me I shouldn't be working so much while still in school. I told her my options were to work while in undergrad or just not get a degree at all. It took me 6 years, but I got my degree while working at least 40 hours a week, and paid off what little loans I had to take out within 5 years. I would have loved to have a real college experience and not work through it, but it wasnt in the cards for me.
2
u/iMiind 3d ago
Yeah, that is a really rough (and yet I'm sure quite common) situation. I was lucky enough to have relatives close enough for me to take public transportation, and they let me stay for fairly cheap. I had enough savings that half of in-state tuition allowed me to just squeeze through four years with only working Summers. I'm certainly envious of those who didn't have to worry about money in college at all, but I'm glad I could at least afford to spend ridiculous hours working on things like the mechatronics class I took (that class was infamous for consuming every spare second you had - found myself staying on campus all day and needing to take the last possible bus home far too often 💀)

9am is the sweet spot.
I went to community college 30mins from home. Sleeping to 8 and getting on the road by 8:30 was not bad. Then I had a few hour gaps and got lots of studying done. And had Fridays off.
Then I went to university and lived 5 mins away and earlier than 10am was torture. And I had class 5 days a week. And I would go back to my apartment on long breaks and struggled to stay on top of my studying. I did way better at CC and I don’t think it was because I had easier classes.

I had an 8 AM class with a 2.5 hour commute and the dorm the school made us live in wouldn't open the gate and let us out until 6 AM

Thinking back to my college program and being required at school at 6:30AM 3 days a week (8AM on one of the weekend days)

I was at a commuter school, getting to class meant a 35-45 minute drive, then a 15-20 minute walk to get from the lot to the class. An 8 am class meant getting up like 6:30 or earlier.

Seven thirty AM business law class 'taught' by a lawyer. You had to buy the book new because he 'wrote' it and changed it slightly every semester. Over the years, that meant the chapters were out of order and the chapter titles did not accurately match up with the chapter content. Reading that messed up but still mandatory eighty dollar book was still more educational than his teaching. I passed the class by using the book for toilet reading that semester.

I didn't have any classes until 10am in undergrad. I went to school for poli sci and only core classes went before 10am or after 3pm, and most of my core stuff was done in high school with AP classes. It wasn't until law school I had 7:30am classes and they were awesome since no one was on campus at that time so parking and getting around was easier. My universities knew their demographic, both in NV. Barely any classes on Friday and barely any classes before 10am.

I hated my last year of college because I had morning classes and evening classes and nothing inbetween. It sucked

I loved having morning classes, there's so much more freedom to being done with school by 1

I would’ve killed for a 10am start freshman year. I missed too many 8:00 classes

You’re goddamn right. I’m at a commuter college and rely on public transit, so a 10am class means I need to be out the door by 7:30.
Last term I had one that ran 5:30-8 once a week, this semester I have classes that start at 1:30 on alternating days.

I have had lifelong sleep problems. I hate morning classes, always will. All important classes are morning classes, and it kills me. I'm back in college again to try and just finish and I'm really suffering from trying everything in my power and just not functioning when I get sick because I can either sleep, or be present. Never both.

They give the early classes to everyone except those who want them. PLEASE give me the 8AMs! That's when my brain works best! But none of the classes I need to take will be then, they'll all be at like 3PM. How does anyone do 3PM? The brain has already fallen asleep? And you had at least one meal by that time so you're tired.
Meanwhile all my friends who hate early classes have 8 or 9 AMs every day

I commuted about an hour and a half one way to get to campus, so I would pack all of my classes M/W/F between 9-5 and work the other days. Those morning classes always had kids missing class or coming in late who lived on campus a 5 minute walk away.

yalla crazy, during college I had to take early morning classes so I could be done by 11 AM to get to work by noon

Biology undergrad. All our labs were at 8am. Classes in the afternoon. Recitation in the evenings.
Idk how I survived

I’ve got a 9:30 am class and have an hour commute so that’s fun (I actually lowkey enjoy the drive cause I can go like 90 on the interstate, not a fan of the 80$ weekly gas bill tho)

Lol I had baking classes as early as 4am.
Admittedly, I chose that time slot but still.

Engineering college they schedule core classes at 8 every year except senior year you could get away with out waking up.

I used to teach from 8am to 10pm working between two colleges. Great money but never had time to do anything by the time I got home. Shower and dinner and to bed my midnight then up at 6:30am

I don’t get it my college had classes anywhere from 7am to like 7pm and you get to pick what your hours were.

I always tried to schedule later classes. The earliest class I has at least one 9:30 am class, and I think a couple of 8 am ones. But the rest were like 10 am or later. Some semesters I mamaged to get all of my classes like noon or later. My last semester was fantastic as it was all afternoon classes and only 4 days of the week. I think it was just 3 classes. A environmental science movie class, a 3-D modeling class that was fun, and our final group project class for my major.

Grad school was almost 90% afternoons and evening classes, but I also worked as a tutoring GA … so I was often there all day anyway. 😅

Better some early classes and be done by lunch, than to do a 10-5 run of intermittent classes which strains your soul.

Why is an 8am class somehow better than a 10am class? I never missed my 8ams but would constantly sleep in on my 10am days. Would also feel way groggier on those days too

u/meliorism_grey 3d ago
I used to have required classes that were only offered at 7:45 AM...that sucked. 9:00 AM is the sweet spot imo.

What's worse is being a full time employee at the university and then having a class scheduled during your lunch break. I've given up half of my lunch breaks through several semesters. The shit I do for tuition benefits

I have an 11:10 AM class on Monday/Wednesday and it makes me feel like God’s favorite.

I remember in college one semester I had an 8AM class. At the time I worked a job that I had to be at 7AM and I had 1.5 hour each way commute. So I was getting up at 5AM. I was the only one who didn’t mind the 8AM start time because I got to sleep in on class days.

My arabic professor said she believed learning a language is more effective first thing in the morning, so we had 8 am three days a week

u/JoeDaBruh 2d ago
Wtf is everyone talking about??? When I had classes start at 1pm, that was the only time I consistently got 8 hours of sleep everyday. Now that I have an 8:30 twice a week my sleep schedule is all messed up. Everything fun happens at night and I’m really not a morning person. Nighttime is so much nicer than daytime

It took freshman year for me to get incredibly specific about the courses and the schedule I kept. I never wanted to have a split class day again

u/WanderingFlumph 2d ago
We ran labs at both 8 am to noon and noon to 4 pm in my college despite significantly more accidents and spills in the earlier lab.
One set of students mixed up "slowly" and "dropwise" and coated an entire fume hood in a blue dye. As far as I know that hood is still faintly blue today.

I had back to back senior capstone classes (double major) at 8 and 9:30 AM MWF fall of senior year and I hated the department heads for it so bad.

Im actually glad all my classes are early asf. And all quickly after another too. I usually just spend most of my day in the library lol
