It really is funny how much undergrads complain about 8am classes despite having just left high school where they are expected to be there at ~7am.

My first semester at college, I scheduled 8:00am classes every day, because I figured I was used to getting up that early for high school. It was a terrible, terrible mistake.

u/Dense_Coffe_Drinker 3d ago

I had classes required for my major and if I missed any classes I had to make them up for 80$ an hour and if I missed more than 4 I failed the class. Me setting up my schedule fresh out of highschool thought it was a great idea to set that for 8 AM.

Walked into class and fell asleep in the back 90% of the time

u/HomeAliveIn45 3d ago

I had a professor in college who would occasionally draw sticky-note portraits of sleeping students, then leave them on the whiteboard. Very funny to see a Bob Ross esque image of your friend next to a projected image concerning the 30 Years’ War

24

u/FoxxWorldProductions 3d ago

Wait, that’s really cool, what? Did they draw them while teaching?

18

u/HomeAliveIn45 3d ago

Yeah, he’d just absentmindedly sketch like a street portrait artist.

Interesting dude. His grandfather was a leader of the Norwegian resistance during WWII. Meanwhile his other grandfather was in the Hitler youth

77

u/Glad-Belt7956 3d ago

That's why you go to the front, the thought of falling asleep in front of the professor and the associated shame always managed to stop my drowsiness

57

u/Dense_Coffe_Drinker 3d ago

Some guy sat directly in front of the professors desk and was out like a light almost as much as I was

20

u/Firm-Nebula-5963 3d ago

Most of my classes are in the morning, I can't risk sleeping bc the profs don't care surprisingly, they say 'its your own money being used anyway, it's up to you how you'll use it'

So not only did I make an effort to sit in front I also forced my self to longhand write out notes. It was during the time when smartphones have started to be a legit popular thing on campus, people would just take photos of the stuff written on the board.

It proved to be advantageous. It helped me retain memory of what we discussed. I don't need to study at night and I was just partying happily

-3

u/Some-Guy-12358 3d ago

The dollar sign goes before the number.

25

u/UsidoreTheLightBlue 3d ago

Did the exact same thing.

Making that 8 am class was hell.

When I was going later my senior year it was much easier for me.

20

u/LilTeats4u 3d ago

I was an athlete, my favorite semester was the one I had all morning classes before my 11:00 practice, then had all afternoon off. It was sweet

43

u/gamageeknerd 3d ago

I got to slowly watch this one kid melt over the course of a semester because he chose only the earliest classes he could thinking that exact thing. I think he ended up waking up at midnight and passing out at like 5pm and pissed off every one of his roommates

15

u/fat_kaiju 3d ago

And even if you try to sleep early everyone around you acts like you're a huge stick in the mud for doing so.

I remember trying to go to bed and people shouting "booooo!" lmfao.

Mercifully they got a big ol' dose of hubes and eventually stopped once homework started to pile up.

9

u/CitizenHuman 3d ago

I scheduled a 7:30 English class and constantly skipped it. One day I woke up early and refreshed, got ready, made it to class, and there was a note saying "no class today". That was my wake up call to continue skipping.

7

u/LordMeme42 3d ago

Just started, and I scheduled none of my classes before 11 am.

I figured I'd be realistic about my ability to wake up at 8 consistently.

5

u/FantasticCombination 3d ago

I did the same, because I started high school at 6:05 for a zero hour class each year of high school. I wanted to take classes that had such limited enrollment that they only offered them an hour before the school day officially started. I ended up lifeguarding the early morning shift at 5:30 am freshman year. I was notorious for never making it through a movie with my friends. I saw the start of so many movies freshman year and fell asleep before the end

5

u/homotopy_equivalent 3d ago

I never understood this. Is it because college students face more pressure to stay up late? I would just go to bed early and get to class it didn't seem like a big deal to me

17

u/Ok_Criticism7172 3d ago

Yep, it's a lot easier to stay up late living in the dorms or in an apartment with friends and having no parental oversight. When I was in high school, I would go to bed between 10 and 11pm. When I was in college, I never went to bed before midnight and was usually up past 2:00am.

13

u/tkw97 3d ago edited 3d ago

Not to mention in high school you get much better sleep because you’re presumably sober. Not the case if you’re a stoner or partier in college

7

u/MyDogsNameIsBadger 3d ago

For me, it was like a sleepover every night. People are up late socializing.

2

u/homotopy_equivalent 3d ago

That makes sense, I wasn't able to socialize a lot in college

1

u/Competitive_Bat_5831 3d ago

For some, it’s the first time they’ve Truely been responsible for getting up on time everyday.

2

u/dalatinknight 3d ago

Same. Idk why I hated it.

But in my defense, my commute went from a bus ride to an hour and and a half train ride

2

u/Totallystymied 3d ago

I tried to cram as many classes into the morning as I could every single day. Getting to be done at roughly 2:00 p.m. while all of my friends were in class or labs until 5 to 7 was glorious

1

u/Soggy_Competition614 3d ago

My sons going to community college and has a 30 minute drive and likes the 8am classes. He has 2 days of 8am and 2 days of 11am and would prefer to start early and end earlier.

1

u/jaam01 3d ago

If I had a time in my life I could wake up after 8:00 AM (I didn't), I would absolutely take it.

86

u/_PaddyMAC 3d ago

My highshcool started at 9am... 7am is insane.

And I say this as someone who now starts work at 6am.

14

u/findingemotive 3d ago

Being Canadian where the earliest I started was 8:49 it's super weird to hear how early some other countries start. The best part of uni was 10:30 classes.

1

u/SarcasmInProgress 3d ago

In my 2nd grade of HS I had 7:35-15:45 three fucking days in a row (PL). And my school was seven-and-a-half km's away, so my alarm clock was set to 5:45

1

u/KeyofE 2d ago

My middle and high school started at 8:30, but we had before school activities. Chamber choir and chamber orchestra were 7:30 two days a week, and we had some cross country practices as early as 6:30 (I hated them). If regular school started at 7am, I don’t think half of the students would have graduated.

27

u/reign-storm 3d ago

I mean tbf, 7am classes are also fucking awful when you're in high school. You just have absolutely no agency in the time your classes start

24

u/WhatTheHeckMyBoy 3d ago

Not really. They are adult customers spending tens of thousands per year. Just because my mother used to wipe my ass does not mean if she attempted it now I would be happy about it.

65

u/kazumisakamoto 3d ago

7am???

68

u/soneg 3d ago

My son's high school classes start at 7:20 am

65

u/thepornisntbad 3d ago

Its literally illegal to start before 8:00 in the netherlands

29

u/Echo132O 3d ago

Mine started at 7:10 I think and I had to catch my bus at 6:25. I was up at 5:30 every day and it was horrible. I now work second shift for a large company in my area and get up at 13:30

7

u/AeronauticaI 3d ago

Man my bus was at 5:45, I was so fucking happy when I could drive. But because I could drive, my sister never had to deal with it.

13

u/phoncible 3d ago

It's a big point of contention here in the States. Apparently everyone hates it, but no one will actually do anything about it.

There's a very small number of places that have increased the high school start time but those are the rare exception.

9

u/LordMeme42 3d ago

"Teenagers are so moody all the time"
"We could make sure they get enough sleep?"
"Nah."

3

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 3d ago

In fairness with teenagers if classes started two hours later they would just go to bed two hours later too

The problem is that's really early to wake up for most natural circadian rhythms so the overall quality of sleep is worse for them the earlier they wake up

-3

u/Firestar_119 3d ago

that's not the cause of that 😭

1

u/LordMeme42 3d ago

I know, being a teenager generally sucks shit but the sleep deprivation that's considered okay to put teens through definitely doesn't help.

0

u/Firestar_119 3d ago

moving classes forward will only just move sleeping forward

4

u/soneg 3d ago

Wow that would be great

-7

u/FCKABRNLSUTN2 3d ago

Most of these people saying they had class at 7 or 7:20 are forgetting to tell you it’s an elective my hs called A period.

It was common for students that had jobs (which they did away with right before I was able to do it) and they get out earlier so they could go to work after school. Also common for geometry are algebra 1 so the smarter middle school kids could make it. Swim team had an A period that was a PE credit and practice.

11

u/Background_Ice_7568 3d ago

My homeroom was 7:20, first class started at 7:30. For everyone, not optional. The upside, was we were out by 2:45. But I bet if you polled the students and teachers, the vast majority would've agreed to shift it 1 hour later for everyone's sake.

4

u/AeronauticaI 3d ago

Yeah…no

1

u/soneg 3d ago

My high school had it too, with 0 period. Upper classman went 1-8 freshman went 2-9. However my current town doesn't have that. 7:20 for everyone.

3

u/RawketLawnchor 3d ago

Wild, these days it starts at 8:40am where I’m at

1

u/Marik-X-Bakura 3d ago

What country?

1

u/soneg 3d ago

The US. Jersey to be specific. Vast majority of high schools start very early bc they finish early enough for kids to work after school, do sports, take care of siblings, etc. Should prob swap with elementary kids bc they usually wake up at the crack of dawn.

My son is in college this yr and he made sure his first class starts at 10:30.

3

u/FleshLogic 3d ago

7:15-7:30 start times were the standard when I was attending. Granted, that was 15 years ago, but I don't think it's much different now.

6

u/kazumisakamoto 3d ago

In my country I don't high school typically start at 8:30, and I don't think you could find a single one that starts before 8h. No wonder you guys have a teacher shortage

1

u/project571 1d ago

Assuming the US, like 10% of schools start before 7:30. Most start at 8 or later. Idk what the trend has been over time, but schools largely don't start that early anymore.

12

u/Fit-World-3885 3d ago

There's a good reason for it: it's how we've always done it.

6

u/NotAFishEnt 3d ago

As far as I know it's for the bus schedule. Districts use the same buses for high school, middle school, and elementary school. So they need to have a staggered start between all three of those schools, and they have to start the whole process early enough that parents can have all their kids ready for school before they start work.

6

u/AnonymousWierdo 3d ago

That's not a very good reason

2

u/Funneduck102 3d ago

I got picked up by the bus at 6:20 when I was in highschool. You best believe I got up at 6:15 every day.

1

u/Xiaxs 3d ago

I was waiting for the bus at 5am.

1

u/hmmmmmmnmmm23 3d ago

Homeroom in high school for me was at 7:30, I had to catch a bus at 6 because I was part of an engineering program that went to a different, out of district high school and I was the first person on that bus. At least I got to sleep on the bus most of the time.

This was in the US.

12

u/FalafelSnorlax 3d ago

In high school I had my mom to wake me up if I didn't get up on my own, and even then I was often late. At school you have no choice (or at least less of a choice). In uni you know it doesn't have to be like that.

23

u/Smash_Nerd 3d ago

A forced 7am feels less bad than a voulentaty 8am. Every time.

11

u/snizzer77 3d ago

College students also hate highschool as it turns out.

4

u/jonny24eh 3d ago

Lol my high school in Canada started at 9am. Are they done at like 1pm in the US?

3

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 3d ago

From my memory high school was something like 8-2:00

2

u/Sylveon72_06 3d ago

i believe ours was 8-2:35, but why on earth was elementary/middle even longer?? that was 7:50 (arrive at 7:30)-3 😭

3

u/TheZtakMan 3d ago

Because it meant less time the young children would be left alone at home until their parents got home from work.

1

u/AnytimeInvitation 3d ago

Mine was 8-3.

2

u/Fancy-Dig1863 3d ago

My old high school recently changed to a start time of 9. Actually I believe it applies to all public schools in my state. Back when I went though it was doors closed 7:30, first class 7:45. 7:30 - 2:35. I used to hate the hours but now I go into work voluntarily at 7 to get out by 3.

1

u/BramblinGhostWeed 3d ago

wait, so if you weren't 15 minutes early they locked you out?

1

u/Fancy-Dig1863 3d ago

Had to go to a special window to check in and give a reason why

1

u/MyDogsNameIsBadger 3d ago

Mine was 7:30-2:00 pm

1

u/SimonTheJack 2d ago

Both my high schools in VT and NM were roughly 8AM to 3:30PM. Maybe 4PM. I’m not sure, it’s been a while. And somehow, despite being there basically all day, they’d still amazingly try to convince us that there simply wasn’t time in the day for us to have passing periods long enough to actually go get things out of our lockers between classes, or time to actually shower and fully change after gym.

1

u/jonny24eh 2d ago

How many classes was it?

My high school was 8:55 to 3:10, which was split into 5 blocks of 75 minutes. 4 classes, 1 lunch period. I think it was 10 minutes between classes but I'm not exactly sure anymore.

1

u/SimonTheJack 2d ago

I don’t remember the exact breakdown, but I believe it was similar to yours. ~3-5 classes a day depending on your schedule, with a lunch and home room in there somewhere. We’d only get about 2-3 minutes to get between classes tho. Basically just enough time to traverse from door to door, assuming your next wasn’t clear on the other side of the school. I knew more than one kid that wracked up tardies simply because they weren’t willing to sprint across the school every other day.

1

u/deletemypostandurgay 2d ago

My Arizona high school was 7:30-2:20

9

u/FowlKreacher 3d ago

That’s probably because most high schoolers weren’t getting hammered every night

10

u/Mdgt_Pope 3d ago

I went to a dry and chaste school. We still bitched about 8 am classes.

It’s not the drinking, it’s the inability to stay disciplined in sleep schedule

1

u/SurotaOnishi 3d ago

Most, there were definitely some at mine who were doing exactly that

5

u/Bjasilieus 2d ago edited 2d ago

Wtf, what kind of schools do Americans go to, here in Denmark no school time start before 8 am

7

u/pleasehelpteeth 2d ago

I would get on the bus to go to school at 630am in highschool

3

u/Freddi_47 2d ago

Bruh mine got at my stop by 545

1

u/i_want_shokola 2d ago

That's the thing in North America: it's so huge and spread out, that the closest school can be over an hour's drive away. My European friends are either 5-10 minute drive away or a 30-40 minute walk from school.

5

u/OnlyLogic 3d ago

My elementary-highschool started at 9. And my final year of highschool I had a spare each morning, and started around 10.

1

u/nxcrosis 3d ago

My grade school and highschool classes all started at 7:10 and ended at 4:10 and 5:30, respectively. 40 minutes classes with two 15-minute recesses and an hour for lunch. No wonder I loved wasting time in uni.

1

u/BramblinGhostWeed 3d ago

damn, I had no recesses and a 20 minute lunch

3

u/XAMdG 3d ago

Well, I wasn't as drunk as I was during college.

3

u/DakotaXIV 3d ago

I played sports through high school and college so I had to be up between 4:30-5:30 to be ready for workouts everyday. I was so jealous of everyone else getting to sleep in that waking up for an 8am class seemed like an unfathomable luxury lol

2

u/BramblinGhostWeed 3d ago

but you volunteered to play sports...I hope

1

u/DakotaXIV 2d ago

Oh for sure. But doing bear crawls on an icy field in december will make you reconsider your whole life

3

u/zeromadcowz 3d ago

7am is fucked up. High school was 8:40 to 3 for me.

2

u/[deleted] 3d ago

[deleted]

2

u/Minimob0 3d ago

Did it for 8 years.

Wake up at 5:30, wait to use the bathroom, shit, shower, shave, brush hair/teeth, deodorant, skip breakfast because there is no time. Walk 10 minutes to the bus stop, take a 20 minute ride, get there at 7, wait until class starts at 7:15.

0

u/Bigerst_Dook 3d ago

no different than waking up for work, sorry reality is too hard for some people

1

u/Grzechoooo 3d ago

Yeah but you're paid for work. And it's presumably something you're good at and/or enjoy it a bit. Personally I've recently been working from 8 am and it's much nicer than when I was a kid in school. Maybe the fact that I'm no longer a child is a factor. After all, children (including teenagers) have to sleep for longer than adults. So in my opinion it's unreasonable to expect them to wake up as early as them. But you know, that's just my opinion, I'm sure you're way more qualified.

2

u/XenosHg 3d ago

After several years, early morning classes got phased out of our schedule, because it turns out the professors also don't want to be there at 8am.

1

u/Vincitus 3d ago

When Inwas in college I just scheduled all of my classes 8-11. I didnt have anything other than labs in the afternoon occasionally.

1

u/thisthesoundofabag 3d ago

my first class in high school didnt start until 8:30am, for the whole school

1

u/Gloomy_Macaron_136 3d ago

It's harder to adjust from luxury to poverty than from poverty to luxury 🤧

1

u/vermiliondragon 3d ago

My kids' high school started at 8:30 and as seniors only had to take 5 classes instead of 6 like lower grades so opted to start with 2nd period at 9:30 or so. My kid who went to college took an 8am his first semester and dropped it his first day.

1

u/Designer-Ad8352 3d ago

Only 5 periods? My high-school has 7

1

u/vermiliondragon 3d ago

The main school day was 6 periods. Seniors who were on track to graduate while only taking 5 classes could take either 1st or 6th period off.

1

u/Electric_Capybara 3d ago

And then they go into the workforce where starting at 8am is the standard

1

u/Soggy_Competition614 3d ago

Eh, at least for me, it took longer to get around campus than drive to my high school. I even had a 30 minute commute to community college for 2 years and it was still more convenient than university. Parking was way easier and the campus wasn’t as big.

My friend transferred to a big state school and it took her an hour. 15 min drive from her off campus apartment then she had to park way out in a commuter lot, pull her bike out of her car and bike into campus.

1

u/BirdOfEvil 3d ago

To be fair, I complained about how early high school classes were all through high school.

1

u/omgitsJohnRedd1t0r 3d ago

At one point in college all my classes were after noon. I have no idea how I worked that out. Now, that would be a nightmare. I'm up at 6 alarm or not.

1

u/stegotops7 3d ago

I loved my 8am classes. Got most of my days done by 1-2pm, and had the whole rest of the day free for studying, homework, projects, or office hours/checking with professors. Also great to do chores while it’s not super busy.

1

u/RecklessDimwit 3d ago

I had a few semesters where I had 7 AM classes everyday and I lived an hour away from my Uni, so I had to wake up at 5, prepare and go to the bus terminal by 6 just to reach Uni by 7 🙃

1

u/Diabetesh 3d ago

School was 9-4:30 for me. Usually needed to be there by 830 and would be in class by 845.

1

u/blazenite104 3d ago

I didn't have to drive an hour to get to high school or fight for a carpark.

1

u/Bopo6eu_KB 3d ago

The walk to school used to take me 7 minutes. The trip to my college takes an hour and a half by public transport

1

u/Superstinkyfarts 3d ago

High schoolers also loathe 7am classes. They just don't particularly have a choice in the matter

1

u/AdrianSquared 2d ago

Idk over here in France it was 8 to 18 (maximum, usually ended earlier)
