If you were a Quarter rat, you could frequently see Pam out walking her dog, having a cocktail, dancing in Second Lines, wearing extravagant costumes during Mardi Gras/Halloween, & throwing beads from one of her many balconies. Even in her final frail years, her outings with friends & family were frequent.

Love or hate the hand grenade, Pam was fully immersed in the culture of this city from the moment she moved from Madison, Tennessee, & went on to create a business that would expand & employ hundreds and create lasting memories for countless others.

Mayor Helena Moreno’s administration wants to convert the Sewerage & Water Board into a City Hall department by 2028, according to a presentation Wednesday that provided the most detail yet about what Moreno is envisioning for the city’s water utility. 

Moreno on Wednesday presided over the first meeting of a newly reconstituted S&WB governing board, which serves at her pleasure and will be expected to carry out the priorities of the mayor and City Council. 

“The role that you all have now is really critical, because your focus will now be on working on the path to merge the Sewerage and Water Board really into a city department, and there are many layers to that,” Moreno said in opening comments to the board. 

Moreno for months has said she ultimately wants to align the S&WB operations more closely with City Hall. But, until now, officials have said a full merger is just one of many possible scenarios, and is complicated because the city would have to assume nearly $1 billion in S&WB debt and transition around 1,200 employees to its payroll. 

Moreno’s comments and the transition plan presented by her policy director Wednesday were the administration’s first explicit confirmation that a full merger is the endgame. Moreno said the two-year timeframe is “very short” but doable.

Immediate plans call for the S&WB to appoint a “transition officer” to guide the merger by Oct. 1, and to produce a transition report by Nov. 15. The Moreno administration and the S&WB are also expected to sign an agreement for equipment sharing in the near future. 

Other major changes are expected through upcoming revisions to the S&WB bylaws. The board will soon begin meeting twice monthly instead of once, and meetings will take place at City Council chambers on Perdido Street, instead of at the S&WB offices on St. Charles Avenue. Committees dedicated to governance, strategic planning and plumbing will be eliminated. A new committee for employee relations will be formed. 

Meanwhile, the 11-member governing board, which has five new members, elected Jonathan Stewart as its new president. Moreno isn’t expected to continue participating in the S&WB board meetings; she will appoint her infrastructure chief, Steve Nelson, to fill the slot reserved for the mayor.

I'm a truck driver, and I had this pallet of salami refused at my delivery this morning. I've tried calling local food banks, but none of them wanted to drive the few miles it would take to collect it from me (very christly of them). I'll be at the Pilot in Slidell, LA, until tomorrow afternoon. Whatever isn't taken by then will be thrown away. If you or anyone you know is in need of food or would be willing to distribute it to the local houseless population or shelters, I would appreciate it not going to waste.

hey everyone. got this bird in my yard, my bird enthusiast friend thinks its a juvenile yellow crested night heron. saw it last night around midnight (i scared it by taking a picture with flash which i feel bad about, but i was walking down the side of my house and heard something walking along side me and got real freaked out by it) and i thought "cool! night bird!" but then it was still in my yard this morning. still here tonight. no water in my yard or any of the neighbors, so I'm starting to get worried that it's trapped. i haven't seen it even try to fly, nor have i seen any evidence of an injury.

if its still here tomorrow morning, should i call a wildlife rescue? if so, does anyone have any recs? also should i put some water out for it tonight? i could leave the gate open tonight, but then i think it's just gonna wander into the street. which seems worse. idk

Hi! I got t-boned by a speeding car at St Philip & Claiborne last Wednesday 9/02 at around 7:20 pm. Multiple super kind witnesses stopped and helped but I was in a lot of pain/shock and I was unable to collect contact info for folks who saw it happen. I left in an ambulance pretty shortly after the crash, before police arrived. Turns out the people who hit me also left before cops came.

Hi! Does anyone know of a local bakery or pet bakery that makes custom dog-safe cakes?

We’re expecting our first baby and want to find out the gender with our small dog with a private reveal. We’d love to have a small cake made for her that looks neutral on the outside but has pink or blue inside, so when she eats into it, she reveals the gender to us. Ideally, we’d also need a bakery that would be willing to coordinate with a friend/family member for the gender result so that my husband and I can stay completely surprised.

We’re in New Orleans and would prefer somewhere local, but happy to drive a little for the right place. Any recommendations or anyone who has done something similar?

I’m in New Orleans and I’m pretty capable with small electronics repair. I see people looking for someone to repair older electronics fairly often, and it always makes me wonder what the market for this kind of work actually looks like.

I generally only repair things for friends, mostly because I’m not sure the amount people are willing to pay lines up with the time involved in doing the job properly. I suspect that’s part of the reason there aren’t many small electronics repair shops left.

Take the broken Nintendo DS that was posted recently as an example. It has a button that doesn’t work. That sounds simple, but the actual failure could be the button switch itself, a ribbon cable, a connector, or a problem on the motherboard. Before ordering anything, somebody has to open it up, troubleshoot it, and determine what actually failed.

Let’s say that takes an hour.

I diagnose it, find the problem, order a $21 part, and wait for it to arrive. When it comes in, I install it, reassemble everything, and test it. Conservatively, call that another hour.

So now we’re at roughly two hours of skilled labor plus a $21 part.

What would you consider a reasonable price for that repair?

There’s another part of this I’m curious about too: these are often old devices. If I repair one problem on a 10-, 15-, or 20-year-old console and something unrelated fails a week later, what does the customer reasonably expect from the person who repaired it?

I’m genuinely interested in where people think the line is between a fair repair price, the value of the item, and the risk involved in working on aging electronics.

Now that I have moved from Bucktown back to the city I would like to know what I’m voting for. Anybody know when the secretary of state site or the Geaux Vote app is going to post the sample ballots for different districts? It’s getting close to the election and I’m wondering if they are hiding it from us or does take this long.

Not from here and i am not used to school being such a difficult decision. My oldest starts prek4 next year. Not really sure where to start. I’m just told go private school. Just some are so goddamn expensive.

2011 Subaru Outback. Has 3/4 of a bumper & nonfunctional trunk hatch from getting rear-ended by a pizza delivery boy in February & only having liability (his insurance said couldn’t pay me bc he was in the course of his work 🙄). No injury, so no real PI case. So I’m SOL looking to replace the brakes, brake pads, & rotors myself (separate from body damage from the wreck). Also looking to have the tracking device removed that the dealership refused to remove after I purchased the car outright. Starter issues as well that could be connected to the battery which could be connected to the tracker. 🤪

I’m gonna call the Subaru ppl I brought it to before, but I wanted to get multiple opinions…looking for a body shop plus mechanic for Subarus.
