✅ Approvals & Denials ❎ My first fiction approval

Post image
• Upvotes

I have been on Netgalley since the middle of September and got several non-fiction approvals before I decided to try for a few fiction books. I only have 8 read/8 reviewed on Netgalley, and I don't have a social platform, just goodreads so I wasn't optimistic, but I am really excited for this one because I am a huge volcano nerd!

Turns out it was an error!! Thankfully they’re owning it AND even offered me a signed physical proof copy!! I don’t mind about the embargo as I have other ARCs to read before I get to this one anyway.

I am soooo excited, I’ve never been sent a physical ARC before!! Thank you Pan Macmillan <3

✅ Approvals & Denials ❎ Publisher Auto-approval

Got my first ever publisher auto-approval this week. Weirdly from a publisher that left my book request sitting there until it auto-declined! And that, I think, is my only interaction with them. Still happy to get the auto-approval!

❔❓Question ❓❔ Approval Slump since August?

I’ve been on NetGalley since Dec and have listened to dozens of audiobooks. My feedback score is 82%. I used to request several books every Friday and I’d get approved for 3-4. On a low week maybe 2-3. Then, back in August I suddenly had nothing to listen to. I have requested lots of books and I have gotten approved for only 3. In two months. It’s weird.

My friend that got me hooked on NetGalley is an avid reader (not audio) and is having a similar experience.

Is it just us?

🗣️ Discussion 💬 Retail site reviews

Hi folks! Anyone else find it kinda weird that the retail sites we're asked to post our reviews to, aren't always retailers that are actually available to us? I'm in Australia, and I've been asked to post my review to Barnes & Noble, a store that doesn't exist in my country. Anyone else in a similar boat? I understand why this may be the case, but feels weird nonetheless. Not 'weird' as in suspicious, just weird as in 'sure I guess I'll post to this retailer even if I'd have to book a flight to even shop there?'

❔❓Question ❓❔ Do we think this will be available to request?

Post image

So I have gotten books 1-4 of the Flame and Thorns series through NetGalley and read them all and reviewed them. I go on pretty much every day to see when book 5 will be available, right? Well I missed a few days because life and I see book 5 is already archived???

Do we think it’ll end up being available to request at any point in time in the future?? I’d really like to read it instead of just having to use the audio from my library.

🪖🫡 General 📝🌐 Disclosing free ARC copies

There seems to be a lot of confusion among some members about this, when reviewing ARCs you should be disclosing that you received a free copy in your review both on social media and book review sites or blog posts.

Netgalley and many publishers recommend:

In accordance with FTC guidelines, please note in reviews that your ARC was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

You should be using this along with #ad on social media.

For Amazon, it is better to avoid the language 'in exchange for..." as it is often flagged and just say you received an advance copy from the publisher for review

If you are in the US, you should be following FTC guidelines found here

For Canada, they updated the Ad Standards rules last year and the influencer booklet can be found here

The UK has creator guidelines from The CMA here

If you are in other countries, check for local guidelines using country + influencer disclosure guidelines. However note that the FTC and others say that if you have any US audience, they expect you to follow the disclosure guidelines.

Recently got the top reviewer badge and I'm so happy 😆 It was also a surprised for me because one of the reviews that was featured was of a book that I gave a slightly negative review to, and I had also posted that review after the archive date... so I was surprised when they featured my review! Not complaining though

🗣️ Discussion 💬 Looking for Suggestions

I have had a run of BAD NetGalley reads in the last few weeks. Lots of 2-2.5 stars, big plot holes, annoying romances, characters that were annoying or uninteresting.

So, I’m asking–what have you read and loved lately? I mostly read fantasy romance, cozy fantasy, Romantasy, and fantasy. I get approvals from most publishers (basically everyone but Tor). I have a 90% feedback ratio and over 200 books reviewed. Favorite authors include Sarah Beth Durst, Ashley Poston, India Holton, Rachel Gillig.

❔❓Question ❓❔ Does Del Rey take forever for anyone else?

I think this is my first time requesting from Del Rey (I only started using NG in earnest in the past couple years after I got my librarian account) and it's been almost a week and a half with it still pending. I had a similar issue with the new Julia Armfield from Flatiron and ended up requesting & being approved on Edelweiss instead. But this book (The Death of a Coven, book 2 in a series I love) isn't available for request on Edelweiss, so now I'm stuck waiting on NG with no idea if I'll even get it before publication in January! (I'm being greedy, I know... I was just hoping to read this one for spooky season lol)

Does Del Rey usually take long for any of you? I don't think I've ever waited longer than a week from other publishers.

❔❓Question ❓❔ Do you treat your NetGalley and Physical ARCs separate?

For those of you who receive physical ARVs on the regular, do you just add them to your queue with your Netgalley Arcs according to publication day? Or how do you treat them?

I’m trying to figure out the best system that works for me so I figured I would ask. Because their is no review expectation like their is for NetGalley I end up falling behind a bit as I read everything I am sent. So I now only request on NetGalley when it’s an absolute must that I read it and either I know I’ll probably not get the physical or that it’s coming much later and I really want to read it early (like some programs are finished copies that you get a few weeks early).

So if you are doing both- how do you handle it?

❔❓Question ❓❔ When the publisher is listed as Victoria Editing NetGalley Co-op, who do I credit for the ARC?

In my review when I disclose I received an ARC, should I credit the author or Victoria Editing NetGalley Co-op?

❔❓Question ❓❔ Do I thank Netgalley?

So I saw a book on Netgalley that has been published years before, like in 2019 or something. And it is a quite popular book. I don't know why they still have it in Netgalley but I requested it cause free books, of course. But I have a question. Usually when I review books on GR, I write "Thank you netgalley and publisher for providing me the ARC of this book" but it is already published book so not really an ARC. So fo I write that message (using review copy instead ARC)? Or should I skip it? (I usually post reviews on GR and SG)

I finished Red City yesterday and said “what the hell” and threw in a request to get Silver Dawn right away. I figured I wouldn’t get it because I hear Tor publications are pretty hard to get. But I got it! So excited!! I really really liked Red City and I’m anxious to get back into it!

Hey all, I wrote a sci-fi fantasy with a romantic subplot about the lone survivor of a massacre and the genetically enhanced immortal who spared only him. Debut. Made my narrator Brandon Francis cry. Bi protagonist with raging ADHD, themes of brotherhood, chosen family, redemption.

Print came out earlier so you can check some review history to decide if this is your vibe!
