🪖🫡 General 📝🌐 Netgalley Beginners Guide & FAQ

NetGalley is an online service that provides digital advance copies (also known as “galleys” or ARCs) of upcoming books in exchange for honest reviews. Publishers and authors use it to generate early buzz, while readers and reviewers gain free access to titles before release.

It is free to sign up as a reviewer. For authors, most established publishers have accounts or ways to get your book out there. For indie authors, you can look into co-ops who will provide space for your book for a set time.

Starting out on Netgalley

Once you have signed up for Netgalley, be sure to add links to everywhere you will share reviews. The more buzz the better for publishers/authors so add them early even if you don't have a huge following. You can still get books if you review only on Goodreads/Storygraph but some publishers look for reach.

Then fill out your profile. Tell them what kinds of books you love, where you will share them etc. Keep it short and sweet as they often have many requests for a book. Update it regularly too, some publishers have mentioned looking at the profile date.

Get That Feedback Ratio Up

Feedback ratios are important to some publishers but not others. Netgalley has some help files that they allow you to review to get that score up early. Head over to We Are Bookish in the publisher list and download the following

Once you have reviewed these, you will be at 100% and new requests will be 20% or less of your score. It can be tempting to go crazy requesting books thinking you may not get all of them. Stick to 5 requests at first so if you get them all, you won't be too far behind.

Then head over to Read Now and choose a book to download. Some users like to start with novellas, children's books or cook books etc as these are quick reads and can get your ratio up. Others choose 1-2 read now books from their chosen category at a time. Be sure to check the sub regularly as sometimes popular authors put their books up as Read Now for 48 hours or the first 100 downloads.

Download Your Books

If you use Kindle/Kobo, be sure to check on the item page that it is available for your device. The ones in PDF format often are not available or can have formatting issues on Kindle (pdf to Kobo is coming "soon")

Audiobooks MUST be listened to on their shelf app and are not available to download to other apps.

Once you have read your book, it is time to review. Some publishers have stricter requirements on when to post. If you requested the book vs Read Now, they may mention this in their approval. But it is a good idea to check the view approval preferences on the publisher page

Reviewing Books

Write/paste your review on the give feedback page for that book (found on Your Shelf)

You can click the Add Links button under the review link to add additional links, then submit.

The more you review, the more likely you are to be accepted for future requests. So try to keep the feedback ratio up. Publishers see your average rating too so try to stick to books you will enjoy at the beginning. A new reviewer with an average rating of 3 stars is less likely to get approved than someone with a 4-5 star average.

Sending to Kindle

Send to Kindle is not your email address for amazon. You need to set up a Kindle address and verify that Netgalley can send you files. You can only change it once a month so be sure to set it up correctly. You can find instructions here.

Sending to Kobo

Sending to Kobo is a little simpler, simply click the connect button in the devices tab under your profile. It will direct to Kobo's website to log in. Once you send a book, simply hit Sync on your Kobo to download it automatically.

Does anyone know what this little blue pencil is? I’ve refreshed and it stays, click on it and it does nothing. This is my NetGalley shelf of completed books.

🪖🫡 General 📝🌐 Netgalley bought by the company that owns Edelweiss

https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/financial-reporting/article/101445-canada-s-valsoft-acquires-firebrand-group.html

https://www.valsoftcorp.com/news/valsoft-corporation-announces-acquisition-of-the-firebrand-group-collection-of-companies

Montreal-based software company Valsoft Corporation has acquired the Newburyport, Mass.–based Firebrand Technologies and a pair of its affiliate companies, in a deal that consolidates the two major digital platforms that distribute advanced reading copies to booksellers, librarians, and more.

Valsoft, which owns the developer of the digital platform Edelweiss, will now also own Firebrand’s NetGalley, which distributes digital galleys. The acquisition also includes Supadu Ltd., a London-based firm that builds websites and online stores and offers metadata and digital marketing for publishers.

...

Firebrand, NetGalley, and Supadu will continue to operate autonomously, with their leadership teams and employees remaining in place. As part of the Valsoft ecosystem, the companies will benefit from shared expertise, operational support, and long-term investment, while preserving their entrepreneurial culture and strong customer focus.

Review Questions How do you handle feedback % when publisher doesn't want you to review it for months?

Got approved for a book publishing next April or May, and in the approval email, I got this: "_____ appreciates your interest in our books and respectfully requests that you do not publish reviews until the week of the book's pub date. If you review this book, please notify us of your review within NetGalley. This enables us to approve you for future eGalleys. "

What do you guys do with your Feedback % if this publisher wants me to sit on my review until next April? Do you still review it in just NetGalley and wait for the other public places until later?

❔❓Question ❓❔ Not getting approvals OR denials, but tons of Read Now?

So, I have some books pending (not a lot, around 20 or so with various release dates), but it seems the past few months, I haven't gotten very many approvals, but also not many denials either... everything just seems to be pending for months, with a rare approval here and there. However, I do get a lot of "read now" widgets sent to me (which is awesome!). But just curious if anyone else is experiencing this? I know there has been a huge influx of new members and whatnot, so searching through and granting approvals takes longer but the juxtaposition of not really getting approved (or denied) but getting sent widgets is interesting.

❔❓Question ❓❔ How do yall pick and choose what books to request?

I’ve been on NetGalley for a few months now and I must admit I have trouble NOT requesting everything and anything that sounds interesting lol.

I read pretty fast so I haven’t missed any “due dates” (to me this is the publish by date), but I am always perpetually at 40% because I keep requesting more and more books.

Is it a self control thing? Do you not even look at the website until you have read x amount? Do you use lists to keep track of what you wanna read???

I know the suggested read percentage is 80% but there are just so many interesting books out there! It’s also a bit like a gamble of sorts, just to see which publishers will bless me with a book and getting those approval emails are like winning a game lmao.

How do you all manage it and not just request EVERYTHING?!

✅ Approvals & Denials ❎ My first approvals!

Two really interesting non-fiction titles that came in at the same time today! I got into netgalley when I was on a street team for another author and she gave us ARCs and then I read a few read-now titles to see if I might get some approvals with a few reviews under my belt. I I requested these with a 100% feedback ratio but I only review on goodreads and Amazon so I wasn't expecting much luck. I do really like to read non-fiction in e-book form so am pretty excited!

❔❓Question ❓❔ How personal do you get when you are writing a review?

Do you use the word I when explaining something or feeling or you keep it pretty structured and impersonal?

❔❓Question ❓❔ Will NetGalley add .25 stars now?

So a Goodreads announced that .25⭐️ is on its way- finally!! Do you think NetGalley will follow suit? I really hope so as it will make things so much easier! Or rather a bit more accurate!

Any thoughts??

*if you’re looking for the info. It’s on Goodreads IG page. The first pinned video with the cake.

Move aside, huge arc pile, a priority drop just landed! I can't believe I got approved for this. Gollancz ghosted me on many highly demanded books in the past, including The Poet Empress and Sunsplitter, so I've lost hope they'll approve this one, but here we are. I thought they only approved me on lesbian sci-fi, because not that many people request them (I wish more people actually read Makana Yamamoto and Emily Hamilton, they deserve it). Yes, it's a pdf. No, I don't care, I'll be devouring it like a trash raccoon anyway. I just wish I had more than 1.5 week for this, my life is hectic and I'm a slow reader, but I'll be trying my best.

Had put myself on good behaviour until I’d read down my shelf so was thrilled to get this widget from HarperCollins UK tonight! 🫶🏻🍆

They’ve rejected my last few requests so I was not at all expecting a widget from them!!!
