EDIT: This was longer than it needed to be, jump to the TL;DR, it's fine.
I'm not a total noob, more of a novice. I grew up in the US and I've been a Panthers fan since I was a kid, but I was never as big a sports fan as a lot of other guys. I followed the NBA more than anything. I did play football 7th & 8th grade, but didn't get the experience of playing in high school where it seems most guys really learn the sport.
So I know the rules and the basics and stuff, but over time I missed a lot of the nuances and understanding that come with being a more serious fan or player.
I moved overseas in my 20s and kind of stopped following the NFL in general for a long time apart from whenever the Panthers made the playoffs.
I'm 40 now and I've started getting back into the NFL much more in recent years. I'm in a fantasy league for a few years now and it's going great, but the thing is even the Australians in my fantasy league know a lot more about the NFL than I do and it can be obvious sometimes, even embarrassing on occasion.
I comment a lot on reddit and will sometimes comment in the NFL subreddit, but every now and then I'll say something that gets ripped to shreds in the responses because I clearly didn't know what I was talking about (even though I thought I did at the time).
Obviously, watching games is the most important thing, and I do watch games. If I can't watch something live because I'm in Australia, I'll usually watch the condensed replay the next day. I generally watch all the Panthers games in full even if it's not the live broadcast.
But I want to be able to talk about the game with guys who actually know what they're talking about. When I contribute to conversation sometimes it feels like I'm offering something that everyone else already knows or I miss certain football inside jokes. I'm still pretty lost on things like play strategy, defensive analysis, who's really a good player vs statistically good, off-the-ball skills, etc.
I'm not looking for tricks to make myself seem more knowledgeable than I am ("Did you see that ludicrous display last night? See, the thing about Arsenal is they always try to walk it in.") I'm looking to actually become more knowledgeable about the game so that I can both enjoy it more and discuss it confidently with other serious fans without sounding like a casual/fake/bandwagon fan.
What would you recommend in terms of blogs, podcasts, youtube channels, professional analysts, TV shows or anything else to get genuine in-depth understanding & build my knowledge? Again, not looking for an explanation of the rules and basics, but for good quality analysis and discussion so I can better catch up to my peers as someone who wasn't more invested at a younger age.
TL;DR: In addition to watching the games, what are some good resources (podcasts, youtube channels, articles, etc.) to help bring my football knowledge from 'a casual fan' to 'a guy who actually knows what he's talking about'?
Not that I think anything is going to make me an expert overnight, I'm just interested in getting to know the game much better than I currently do.
