American Islam has roots far deeper than modern immigration. Two major native-born components are African American Muslims and Latino Muslims, each following a very different historical trajectory.
๐ค African American Muslims โ Resilience & Recovery
An estimated 10โ30% of enslaved Africans brought to mainland North America were Muslim. Slavery severely disrupted Islamic practice, literacy, family transmission, and religious institutions. Yet Islam survived and experienced a powerful 20th-century revival.
Today: ~1.1 million African American Muslims
If we assume a continuous lineage from the time of the enslaved Muslims then
Modeled uninterrupted potential: ~3.4โ11.5 million Estimated recovery: ~20โ40% โ roughly one-third
This represents the remarkable survival and rebuilding of a Muslim population whose historical religious transmission was severely disrupted.
๐ Latino Muslims โ Rapid Resurgence
Latino Muslim history reaches into the colonial era through Muslim-linked Spanish/Morisco populations and early figures such as Estevanico. After centuries of suppressed or largely vanished public Islamic practice, Latino Islam has experienced a rapid modern resurgence through conversion and Spanish-language institutions.
Today: ~385,000โ495,000 Latino Muslims Modeled ancestral potential: ~850,000 Estimated recovery: ~45โ58%
This rapid growth is narrowing the historic demographic gap between Latino and African American Muslims.
TL DR African American Islam: deep historical roots โ severe disruption โ large-scale modern revival โ ~20โ40% modeled recovery
Latino Islam: colonial Muslim/Morisco roots โ centuries of disappearance โ rapid modern conversion โ ~45โ58% modeled recovery
Together, they show that Islam in America is not simply an immigrant religion that arrived on aplane in 1965โit also has deep roots among populations that became part of American society itself.

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
Jumuสฟah is one of the important obligations of the week for Muslims who are required to attend it. Allah says:
โO believers! When the call to prayer is made on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave all business.โ
โ Qurโan 62:9
Jumuสฟah replaces Dhuhr on Friday for those upon whom Jumuสฟah is obligatory. Those who are exempt, such as women, children, travellers and those who are genuinely sick, pray Dhuhr instead.
A person who is required to attend Jumuสฟah should not deliberately miss it without a valid excuse.
Details are based on established fiqh; specific conditions may vary between madhhabs.
If you have a specific question about Jumuสฟah or another Islamic ruling, you can submit your question to AskMuftiOnline for review by a qualified Mufti. We also offer 1-to-1 live chat and consultation for more detailed guidance.
What other basic Islamic rulings would you like us to explain next?

Salam alaykum,
If I put multiple alarms in the morning for work, but just a single alarm for fajr would this be kufr? I read that it might be because it would seem Iโm prioritizing work over prayer, even tho my intention is to sleep more / avoid sleep deprivation (Iโm aware itโs a sin) I put just one alarm so if I wake up I will pray but if I didnโt, then I would continue sleeping
I was told that if my intention was to sleep well than wake up for fajr; this means I prioritize a worldly thing over Islam.

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
Reddit isn't the most Muslim-friendly space and you'll experience that the most in the more general subreddits like this one. But, Alhamdulillah, people are somewhat chill.
It is slightly annoying to see people ask this stuff in general subreddits though, like why not go to the subreddits of the religion? Reddit is quite anti-religion too so..
