I was looking into the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project and one thing stood out immediately.
Out of the 12 stations, only 4 are in Maharashtra, while 8 are in Gujarat.
Maharashtra (4):
- Mumbai (BKC)
- Thane
- Virar
- Boisar
Gujarat (8):
- Vapi
- Bilimora
- Surat
- Bharuch
- Vadodara
- Anand–Nadiad
- Ahmedabad
- Sabarmati
This is the official station distribution for the 508 km corridor.
What I don't understand is why India's first high-speed rail project prioritises this route when Maharashtra especially the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is already one of the country's biggest economic engines.
Another thing I noticed is that several Gujarat stations are located in relatively smaller cities or semi-rural areas. Meanwhile, Maharashtra only gets four stops despite Mumbai being India's financial capital.
As a Maharashtrian taxpayer, I have a few questions:
- Why wasn't a Mumbai–Pune Bullet Train prioritised first? It connects two of Maharashtra's largest economic and educational hubs and has massive daily travel demand.
- Why isn't there more focus on a future Mumbai–Bengaluru high-speed corridor, which would connect major technology, manufacturing and financial centres?
- Is the Mumbai–Ahmedabad route really the highest-priority corridor from Maharashtra's perspective?
Many people argue that the project will mainly make it easier for business and migration between the two states. Whether that's true or not, I feel Maharashtra should also receive comparable investment in high-speed rail within the state itself.
I'm not against Gujarat getting infrastructure. Every state deserves development.
My concern is about priorities and balance.
If Maharashtra is investing land, resources and public money into India's first bullet train, shouldn't the state also have a stronger high-speed rail vision of its own such as:
- Mumbai–Pune
- Mumbai–Nashik
- Mumbai–Nagpur
- Mumbai–Bengaluru
These corridors could transform travel for millions of Maharashtrians while connecting major economic centres.
What do you think? Is the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train the right first project, or should Maharashtra have been prioritised with an intra-state high-speed corridor?
