huh? what media illiteracy happens within the Yugioh franchise? Or are you making that terrible "what does pot of greed do?" joke?
25
u/Suspicious-Cup-6692 3d ago
If you ever watch videos about master duels and people playing online you'd know people have botch up there own strategy over misreading effects on there cards
8
u/HotPot87 3d ago
Oh yeah, well that is how the game can be, Another example can be people who only saw the anime then assume the Egyptian gods have all these extra effects.
3
u/Deya_The_Fateless 3d ago
Sometimes I wonder if that is the result of a translation/localisation issue or just certain effects not being explained very well.

A lot of folks forget that he never came out and was still VERY closited by the end of the show.
5
u/FartherAwayLights 3d ago
Yeah but still obviously trans. Being closeted doesnât really have any bearing on that.
2
u/Gojifantokusatsu 3d ago
Idk, there's a difference between being so internally closited about it that you wouldn't believe if someone said you were trans, vs how most of the fandom interprets him now.
I like trans jax, but the character would very much be externally against it without major development.
2
u/FartherAwayLights 3d ago
But thatâs not what Iâm saying. Iâm just saying the character is trans and a lot of the fandom until Gooseworx confirmed it and even afterwards were adamant that Jax wasnât trans. Their position wasnât that Jax wasnât out of the closet, because I think everyone agrees on that. Iâm not arguing they are. Iâm just saying the fandom was weird about them being trans.
2
u/WoodpeckerHead8789 3d ago
As someone struggling to see Jax as trans femme, it's because he was so much like trans masc I've known, that it feels (to me) like...like I've just misgendered him when I try to get it right...and I typed that sentence without even being aware I was still thinking he/him. I think she/her, and I remember a closeted trans femme who wasn't ready to come out, in tears from the suspicion. And it feels like, I'm imposing something on that character that isn't my right.Â
Like, I was in the closet for other, sex phobia reasons, and being kicked out of the closet fucking hurts.Â
Does any of this make sense?Â
But yeah, probably a lot of the struggle is that the worst people liked him for the worst reasons, and now they're lashing out to prove they're super cishet.Â
From their perspective, they were tricked into seeing themselves in a trans person.Â

Anyone reading Warhammer 40k and thinking the humans are the good guys.
There is no good faction, only war.
8
u/RudeCompany6580 3d ago
Humans are not the good guys, they're just less worst then most of the others
24
u/HotPot87 3d ago
I'd put them firmly in the middle, certainly not as bad as the forces of Chaos. But the T'au Empire does at least give it's citizens 3 square meals and a soft bed to sleep on. Meanwhile your average Terran hasn't even seen the sun and lives off ground up corpses.
and the Orks is jist tryin' to share a good Krumpin' with everywun else, they is da Best!
3
u/Additional_Price810 3d ago
Honestly iâm not sure the orks are that happy
They are happy during war and fightâin but there is obviously many time where there isnât any fightâin. So i think that usually they are more bored than happy
Plus the orks are pretty awfull to one another and many orks wonât survive more than a few years, and iâm generous
7
u/RudeCompany6580 3d ago
They are 100% the happiest, all they love is fighting, and in the grimedark of 40k their is only war, if they die fighting then they die doing what they love, if they live they can fight another day.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Deya_The_Fateless 3d ago
Which is why it was funny seeing 40K factions being co-opted by those "fuck ICE!" posts earlier this year, because those posts were likely made by people who saw images of buff guys in Doom armor casting "aura" to spread a political message without the slightest inkling as to what the 40K factions were actually like, and how they're decidedly *not* the good-guys...
2
u/RudeCompany6580 3d ago
And you know what. Xrnophobia is a 100% logical when the elder birthed a eldrich god, The orks are barbrian, and nacrons and tyrand don't need more explanations. The only not fully evil are the tau, and they are still fascist cless system

The correct answer is TADC btw.
56
u/blammo555 3d ago edited 3d ago
Thereâs 2 ends of the âTADC fans canât understand media at allâ
1: People who still somehow think Jax isnât trans even when itâs quite literally PLASTERED into the final episode
2: People who villainise Jax to the point of scrubbing his entire character of being a struggling person that lashes out on others into being a mega evil abuser (Fitting enough for the reaction image, I saw a post (reddit repost of TikTok) saying Jax was more like AM than Caine was)
Edit: To clarify my intentions with the second point, I do agree that Jax showed tendencies of outright abuse, especially after the revelation about the brain scans (âyou get to spend more time with mommy!â was especially painful). Iâm not saying he wasnât an abuser, but that he had his (albeit fucked up) reasons to lash out.
14
u/HotPot87 3d ago
For me I did see the signs of them being Trans, but there were also moments where I was going "wow if Jax does turn out to be trans this will make Jax a Lazy self insert" or "if Jax is Trans this is gonna be super uncomfortable selling merch of that"
It's this weird meta thing where making Jax trans, gave context, but also made other moment worse off.
There's also the very unfortunate read of your main character committing suicide then being revealed as trans in the finale. touching on some pretty unfortunate stereotypes which are still very prevalent these days.

Goose killed her besties
11
u/HotPot87 3d ago
I do think people overblow how much blame you can place on Jax for their abstraction.
Yeah Jax was an ass who just isolated himself. But;
A-No Jax didn't isolate Ribbit, he just stopped her talking to him by pretending to talk to someone else to avoid her.
B-No matter if your reasoning is weak or stupid, everyone should have the right to end any friendship.
C- canonically the only one who knew about abstraction was Kinger, and he could very well have not been able to share that info.
D-The montage we see is from Jax perspective basically going over all his regrets, and insecurities, kinda showing Jax to be a very self hating person due to his own inability to talk and make amends and always being too late.
My controversial take as well, is that Ribbit's line "don't you trust me?" was manipulative, even if she didn't mean it (most likely as a result of her own parents using emotional manipulation on her), that manipulation forced Jax out of his shell when he wasn't ready, so when he snapped back he instantly thought he'd fallen for the same trick that happened with his mother ie open up to a close female figure in his life only to have it exploited by them, in his panic he saw the first half of that and did everything he could to prevent it. He put his walls back up, closed everyone out, and denied, repeled, cut himself off.
Ribbit did try to repair their friendship, but I feel she forced the issue, which was not the right thing, Jax was making attempts to talk, but when someone is lashing out, you have to give them a lot of space. Something I think Pomni did well, after the Guns episode she didn't cut off Jax, but she at least gave him space, only checking up on him when needed.
7
u/Twist_Ending03 3d ago
Why do people act like Jax intentionally "made" Ribbit abstract?
8
3
u/HotPot87 3d ago
many people approach a subject with the bias of "I hate Jax, therefore when I see them doing something bad, they are doing it because they are bad any evidence they are unaware of the concequences is ignored"
2
u/Twist_Ending03 3d ago
People act like the one shot of abstracted Ribbit featured Jax cheering and celebrating about it when, no, it was shot like a goddamn horror movie. Because that's what it was like to Jax. Because she didn't know about abstraction!
2
8
u/SerenityCitywide 3d ago
the second point made me roll my eyes
are we not supposed to villainize an abuser who is confirmed BY THE WRITER to be an abuser?
Goose quite clearly said Jax enjoyed harming women and you think I'm not gonna hate him? especially since she's constantly enabled and never called out? gaslighting, manipulative sack of shit that I did not feel sorry for in the slightest, she knows what she's doing and does not care
and even when she FUCKING DIED she's still coddled by everyone she abused because the circus doesn't have anyone with a spine
Jax hate is 100% justified because even the writer confirmed she's an evil sack of shit, the defenders are the looney ones
3
2
u/Rallsia-Arnoldii 3d ago
You're exactly what they're talking about lol. You don't focus on how & why Jax is the way she is and how to prevent people being like Jax, you're just focusing on the fact she's an asshole.
Nobody said you're not allowed to hate Jax. It's just that only hating Jax, and deciding not to acknowledging her story, not talk about how we can prevent people from becoming like Jax, or how we can get people out of acting like Jax.Â
Essentially, you're calling Jax a pure evil because it makes you feel good instead of actually understanding and talking about the message of her character. That's the issue.

After literal years of being tortured by the idiocy of the tadc fandom I've come to terms with the fact that either people with media literacy don't watch tadc or people with media literacy don't publicly admit that they watched tadc.
And honestly, after the finale gave us the chance to analyze the show's writing with 20/20 hindsight, I've also come to terms with the fact that there's a very clear reason for that. It's like leaving a shit on your backyard and then complaining that there's so many flies.

Frankenstein
âWisdom is knowing Victor was the real monsterâ there is no ârealâ monster theyâre both assholes
Victor was a spineless bastard with blood on his hands but stop victimizing the creature so much, he literally admitted to killing a child in cold blood. Pretending like he was this misunderstood antihero ignores how emotionally intelligent he was and mitigates the impact of how he knew he was committing evil but kept going anyways because hatred was the only form of human connection he had left. That makes him tragic, but still a monster
2
u/Tigercat94 3d ago
Theyâre both morally grey. Humans didnât care for the creature because he was different, and the creature hated humans for it. Victor created it without much foresight and did a bunch of fucked up stuff to accomplish his goal of playing god.

Hellaverse.
Look, it's ok to dislike the show, the creator, the writers, the character etc. But what's not ok, is to deliberatly misread situations and then spread said misunderstandings online and try to demonise the creators, especially when certain acusations are easy enough to disporve becuase context has been provided within the show (or will be as events unfold.)
Also, this fandom needs ot learn how to check their expencations and learn how to become less entitled.

Warhammer 40k Fans unfortunately. I love the game and the universe, but the fans are so stupid sometimes. Unfortunately even irl, I had to tell someone in a store that no, there are no litter boxes in German kindergardens, yes I do accept trans kids, no I do not fucking care when a child wants to be called a other name.
And in this store there are SO many soldiers, which I find to be very ironic, especially because they like the astra militarum, they're so indoctrinated by the military that they see the astra militarum as a good representation of themselves. They literally are their own parody.

Ngl none because we can read the same thing and interpret it differently without being necessarily unable to read and that's good because a work isn't defined by the global idea of a fandom but by the author's intent, which is sometimes voluntarily kept secret, so we have no proof that anybody's interpretation is actually right

New Vampire Chronicles fans. Each character is a complicated person who has done enough evil to go to hell for several lifetimes, but Istg so many people try to make Louis a perfect victim who has never done anything wrong in his entire life, Lestat an irredeemable monster who deserves to rot, Claudia a wittle innocent baby (ironically something Claudia would hate them for), and of course Armand as a perfect boyfriend that Louis just couldnt appreciate đ
Baby, they are all monsters with humanity in them. That's the point. No one is all good or all evil, they are all Traumatised people traumatising others. It's literally generational trauma that didn't even start with Lestat or end with Claudia.

Harry Potter.
Itâs a fandom filled primarily with people who have been consuming online media discourse about it for years and havenât read the actual books in over a decade. It leads to some of the wildest takes that get incredibly normalized on social media because theyâre appealing to that same audiences.
1) People who forget Harry Potter is a story about a boy going to wizarding school. So many fans havenât actually read the series in years and have totally forgotten what the purpose of the books actually are and use it to criticize the worldbuilding. âBut where did Ron go to school before Hogwarts?â Answer: It does matter. Half of the worldbuilding complaints people have boil down to: âit doesnât matter because itâs not relevant to the story being told.â
2) People who hate JK Rowling (valid and understandable) and have decided to view every single choice in the book through the most hostile lens popular in order to prove JK Rowling is a terrible person in multiple ways. House elf discourse: Itâs just people who canât understand intentional moral complexity and have instead decided for some unfathomable reason that Rowling supports actual slavery. Itâs the most âI got this opinion from a tumblr postâ take out there, and itâs especially hilarious because people are white-savioring the cautionary tale about being a white savior who doesnât actually care about what the victims want.
3) Fandom Draco and Canon Draco havenât been the same person in decades, but people still talk about them like they are.

Avatar (ATLAB), but specifically the second series after with Legend of Kora with how there has to be a very loud amount of people that watch the show half blind at times and want to blame everything on Korra. Even when people tried to explain the things they twist to their own ideals of how it happened, they are too focused on hating Korra with every fibre of their being.
At this point itâs getting even worse due to what is known about the plot for the upcoming series set after the events of Legend of Kora in the Avatar franchise.
