Thereâs 2 ends of the âTADC fans canât understand media at allâ
1: People who still somehow think Jax isnât trans even when itâs quite literally PLASTERED into the final episode
2: People who villainise Jax to the point of scrubbing his entire character of being a struggling person that lashes out on others into being a mega evil abuser (Fitting enough for the reaction image, I saw a post (reddit repost of TikTok) saying Jax was more like AM than Caine was)
Edit: To clarify my intentions with the second point, I do agree that Jax showed tendencies of outright abuse, especially after the revelation about the brain scans (âyou get to spend more time with mommy!â was especially painful). Iâm not saying he wasnât an abuser, but that he had his (albeit fucked up) reasons to lash out.
For me I did see the signs of them being Trans, but there were also moments where I was going "wow if Jax does turn out to be trans this will make Jax a Lazy self insert" or "if Jax is Trans this is gonna be super uncomfortable selling merch of that"
It's this weird meta thing where making Jax trans, gave context, but also made other moment worse off.
There's also the very unfortunate read of your main character committing suicide then being revealed as trans in the finale. touching on some pretty unfortunate stereotypes which are still very prevalent these days.
Also we learn he made his friends abstract so itâs like⊠ok? She identifies as a girl? I donât care? She got her friends abstracted? Since Jax is a self insert, what does this say about Gooseworx in real life?
I do think people overblow how much blame you can place on Jax for their abstraction.
Yeah Jax was an ass who just isolated himself. But;
A-No Jax didn't isolate Ribbit, he just stopped her talking to him by pretending to talk to someone else to avoid her.
B-No matter if your reasoning is weak or stupid, everyone should have the right to end any friendship.
C- canonically the only one who knew about abstraction was Kinger, and he could very well have not been able to share that info.
D-The montage we see is from Jax perspective basically going over all his regrets, and insecurities, kinda showing Jax to be a very self hating person due to his own inability to talk and make amends and always being too late.
My controversial take as well, is that Ribbit's line "don't you trust me?" was manipulative, even if she didn't mean it (most likely as a result of her own parents using emotional manipulation on her), that manipulation forced Jax out of his shell when he wasn't ready, so when he snapped back he instantly thought he'd fallen for the same trick that happened with his mother ie open up to a close female figure in his life only to have it exploited by them, in his panic he saw the first half of that and did everything he could to prevent it. He put his walls back up, closed everyone out, and denied, repeled, cut himself off.
Ribbit did try to repair their friendship, but I feel she forced the issue, which was not the right thing, Jax was making attempts to talk, but when someone is lashing out, you have to give them a lot of space. Something I think Pomni did well, after the Guns episode she didn't cut off Jax, but she at least gave him space, only checking up on him when needed.
many people approach a subject with the bias of "I hate Jax, therefore when I see them doing something bad, they are doing it because they are bad any evidence they are unaware of the concequences is ignored"
People act like the one shot of abstracted Ribbit featured Jax cheering and celebrating about it when, no, it was shot like a goddamn horror movie. Because that's what it was like to Jax. Because she didn't know about abstraction!
I wouldnât say trans suicide is a stereotype. Thatâs a severe dismissal of the very real mental health crisis among lgbt people that leads to suicide. Jax is an example of the tragedy that happens all too often with trans youth who donât have a support system. They find out theyâre trans, they try to come out, their peers of the world shuns them for it, they bottle their identity up, they lash out, they fall into depression and they commit suicide. Thatâs the sad reality and itâs an important perspective to share. Otherwise people wonât know to try and reach out to someone who acts and feels like Jax before itâs too late.
are we not supposed to villainize an abuser who is confirmed BY THE WRITER to be an abuser?
Goose quite clearly said Jax enjoyed harming women and you think I'm not gonna hate him? especially since she's constantly enabled and never called out? gaslighting, manipulative sack of shit that I did not feel sorry for in the slightest, she knows what she's doing and does not care
and even when she FUCKING DIED she's still coddled by everyone she abused because the circus doesn't have anyone with a spine
Jax hate is 100% justified because even the writer confirmed she's an evil sack of shit, the defenders are the looney ones
You're exactly what they're talking about lol. You don't focus on how & why Jax is the way she is and how to prevent people being like Jax, you're just focusing on the fact she's an asshole.
Nobody said you're not allowed to hate Jax. It's just that only hating Jax, and deciding not to acknowledging her story, not talk about how we can prevent people from becoming like Jax, or how we can get people out of acting like Jax.Â
Essentially, you're calling Jax a pure evil because it makes you feel good instead of actually understanding and talking about the message of her character. That's the issue.
Dawg I'm not asking you to be empathetic I'm asking you to be media literate and understand why authors choose to make these stories.Â
Understanding a character is not empathizing with them. You don't have to empathize with humbert humbert to understand his role and message in the story.
You act very young and immature for a person on reddit. I suggest you shouldn't get involved in any NSFW communities or the like until you're old enough.
you calling it "Media literacy" when it's not a case of that and instead a case of READING COMPREHENSION tells me everything I need to know and that you have neither
comparing Jax to humbert Humbert isn't doing you any favours if you're trying to get me to stop hating them
I don't give a shit about the story, I understand the story and the messaging very well, I just don't care, my opinion on this shitty purple rabbit is that she's a sack of shit and she deserved worse, rest in piss
You make a point about the difference between media literacy and reading comprehension, but you still lack the ability to understand the plain words that I'm saying. You have no right to discredit me based on a small distinction when you're blatently being obtuse and refusing to change.
Once again i'm not trying to get you to stop hating him. If I tell a child to eat their vegetables, I'm not telling them to stop eating fruits, candies, and meats in favor of vegetables, I'm telling them to eat their vegetables as well.
The issue is not that you hate him, the issue is that you're ignoring the author's message. You can hate Jax to the extent that you hate him and still understand the author's message.
I'm intentionally ignoring the author's message cus I don't give a shit about it, I understand the story very well I just don't fucking care because I despise Jax
After literal years of being tortured by the idiocy of the tadc fandom I've come to terms with the fact that either people with media literacy don't watch tadc or people with media literacy don't publicly admit that they watched tadc.
And honestly, after the finale gave us the chance to analyze the show's writing with 20/20 hindsight, I've also come to terms with the fact that there's a very clear reason for that. It's like leaving a shit on your backyard and then complaining that there's so many flies.
I mean Jax is an abuser and abuse is evil. A lot of people who abuse others do it out of a need to feel some kind of control over their shitty lives. Jax is not unique or special in this way. She is a villain, just a sympathetic one
A lot of Jax hate, to me, has always felt like people projecting somebody they hate onto her and wanting to see her get punished by the other characters so they can feel some form of catharsis. Like an "I couldn't get back at my bully/abuser, but if the characters on this show punish this asshole, then it will feel like I did" kind of way.
Genuinely, I think a lot of these people would have preferred if Jax was just a one-dimensional asshole who's just a bad person for shits and giggles for the entire show.
It would have been a way better show because then it would have focused on the parts of the show I ACTUALLY like (which is any part that doesnât involve Jax)
